This Home Depot has done a great job oh hiring people who are knowledgeable in their fields. I prefer this Home Depot over the neighboring Menards because of the knowledgable employees. The other great thing that Home Depot does is the first Saturday of every month they do a kids build. Kids come out and build things like planes, cars and other things. It's all free and the kids get their own orange apron and a pin for each item they build. Our little guy had a blast with it. read more

I had Home Depot install a water heater in my home. They installed it in such a way the pressure release valve was pressed up against the wall. I didn't know much about water heaters but when I researched this component I discovered to my horror it is an emergency safety device mandated by law which releases pressure in the event of a problem. Without it the water heater can become a bomb. They way the installers put it up against the wall the pin in the device wouldn't be able to move. I called Home Depot to complain about an unrelated issue and a guy did come the next day but he didn't resolve my complaint nor was remotely concerned about the pressure release valve. I had to carve a hole out of my wall clearing the space around the valve. This could've turned out very very bad. read more

There are definitely products you may only find in one store or the other, but nothing that is significant enough to mention. This is only applies if you are looking for a specific item. The Home Depot and Menards in Des Moines and Ankeny are right next to each other, so if you are not satisfied with one you can go to the other with no hassle. Worst customer service ever!!! Here is the situation, my parents ordered 80 bags garden soil and 60 bags mulch. They were supposed to have it delivered on Monday the 10th and it was purchased, paid for and delivery scheduled the week prior. The store literally sold the product that was already purchased and didn't have any basic customer service skills even to notify the customer that they were not getting their purchase. The original purchase was at ankeny store to be reserved at the Urbandale store where it was in stock. This location originally sold the product that was paid for so it was transferred to the Ankeny location. The Ankeny location received the order transfer. And promptly changed the delivery date without notifying my parents who took off work to receive said order. My mom finally called after wondering where the order was and was told pretty much too bad so sad deal with the new delivery date. It had been sold because they were having a sale. Pretty sure selling product to someone else that has already been paid for is illegal. So we get to the reschedule now more time has to be taken off work especially with their vague it will be delivered sometime on the 11th..... My mom is disabled so they were to bring it into the garage which was scheduled ahead of time. She stated she was not going to be home and didn't want it piled in the drive for her (she is disabled) or my dad (who has a torn rotator cuff injury) to deal with. Their solution. Leave the garage open for the day. I mean. What?! Not in the nicest neighborhoods would I leave my home open!!! Their lassie faire attitude and absolutely no care for customers and lack of service recovery is appalling. If they would have mentioned their mistake in the first place it wouldn't have been an issue. Their attitude for the issue is the worst I have ever seen. I will NEVER be shopping at Home Depot again. Especially when they sell things you pay for and you end up getting the shaft. read more

Let me explain why they're only getting 3 stars. I would've gave them at least a 4 if it wouldn't have been for my last experience with them. I had a heating and cooling company tell me that I needed to replace my thermostat. So, I went to Home Depots website and ordered one, which it said they had 3 in stock, to pick up in store. When I arrived that afternoon to pick it up, they one they had reserved for me had already been opened and found out it was a returned item. They went to find me another one but said that they didn't know where the other 2 were at. They offered to give me the next more expensive item for the same price. Unfortunately, the next item up was a WiFi thermostat that I did not want. They told me that the one they had set out for me was fine and that if I had any issues with it that I could bring it back. Well, wouldn't ya know that once I got it home and installed that it had a broken post inside. I'm sure that's why it was returned in the first place. So I took it back. They apologized and again offered me the WiFi one for the same price. I was out of options at the time since I needed to have a thermostat so I took the WiFi one, not knowing much about it. I got it home and started reading the manual only to find out that my furnace is wired with 4 wires and not 5, which the WiFi thermostat requires. To sum up a way too long story, I ended up taking the WiFi thermostat to the Urbandale location and exchanging it for the one I wanted in the first place, with no issues. Aside from this lengthy experience, they've been pretty good to deal with and have usually had what we've needed. read more

My confession: I'm not the handiest gal. Thank goodness for the guys at home depot! My house is being renovated and I had no clue about painting. Niko, the guy who works at the paint department, was so helpful and taught me about different kinds of primer, paint durability and enamel finish. He was efficient in mixing the paint for me to walk out happily and ready for anything...well happily is not the exact word at the thought of all the painting that awaited me lol He even gave me a discount on a huge bucket of paint therefore saving $10 if I had bought 4 quart buckets. If you buy GE washer and GE Dryers if it breaks down. Take it back to store and go somewhere else. Our GE washer broke down and squeaked a lot after a couple weeks. When we called the store they referred us to a company in Marshalltown that comes and looks at the washer. The man came looked at it and said I'll order the part and I'll be back. The Home Depot is my favorite home improvement store. Over the past couple of years, I've made a lot of trips to Home Depot, Lowe's, Menards, and Ace Hardware. The workers at Home Depot and Ace are a lot friendlier than at Lowe's or Menards, and they always go out of their way to help you find what you need. The prices are also competitive (for some reason, I often feel like I'm getting ripped off at some other hardware stores), and they actually carry products that are made in the USA, as well as tools that have lifetime warranties. read more

This is a warning to all about Home Depot. If you are doing any kind of home remodeling, avoid Home Depot. As far as ordering any materials. Because you will get what ever the sales person wants, not what you need. Case in point, my sister went down to order windows for her house. We had it all written out for her. Since we didn't want to spend extra money for special order windows. I told her to get standard size windows as close to the size of the rough openings as possible. The only mistake she made was to say that she was replacing the windows in her house. So the sales person, who obviously knows nothing about construction. Just did what they are taught by Home Depot. Switched the order from new construction to replacement windows. Which means that the nailing flange that holds the window in place is not there. So they made the window and Patio door a special order, and all they did was order standard windows and door and cut the nailing flange off. And now we can't return said windows because they were special order. Even thou the sales person said we could at the time of the sale. I was at Home Depot this morning to discuss this matter. They were waiting for us. The sales person ran for the manager right away. Then the Manager accused us of not knowing what to do or how to order what we needed. That we ordered replacement windows without flanges. Because it was high lighted on their copy of the sales receipt. The sales person was there and lied thru her teeth!!! I even asked them when ever have you seen a patio door that was made to fit inside existing patio door like a replacement window. Got no answer on that one. So it ended up with the manager reverting back to a standard answer that they do not take returns on special order windows. That the windows and door were ours now and they wouldn't do anything about it. I do remember the manager using the phrase "tough shit". I had to leave then or I would of ended up in jail. The management in Ankeny IA Home Depot are no more than liars and thieves. So, I called the Corporate office in GA - ended up speaking with a lady in the complaints dept. She gave me the same answer - you own it and we aren't going to do anything for you. I asked to speak to someone above her and she refused. NEVER AGAIN will I walk thru those doors... Let me start by saying Vincent was wonderful. He went above and beyond to help us out. So the three stars are for him. Being a Lowe's shopper for so long due to them supporting our military, we have been Lowe's shoppers for a very long time. Hearing that Home Depot now gives military discounts we decided to go in. Everything was fine till checkout. No one was at a check out so we went to customer service to check out and see about the military discount ( cause at most places you have to go to customer service to sign up for it) where Sammy and and Kim were very rude and seemed annoyed that we came to them and proceeded to make us feel dumb by not knowing that the girl at self check out could help us with that or that she could check us out. Going as far as rolling her eyes at the thought of us getting a military discount. Suggestion change your people in customer service because their customer service was awful.
