I browsed thru their outerwear and saw some nice name brand jackets I would like to have . I think they were selling the ones in good shape for about 70% off . The staff was helpful and friendly . First time here as it came recommended to me. I checked out the website beforehand and saw this deal for 10% off the first purchase when you sign up for texts, so I did. Got in and made a purchase and the workers had no idea what I was talking about, so I had to pay full price. The workers didn't seem concerned at all by the confusion and said they didn't know they had a text chain. I could've showed them their own website, but at that point it didn't seem worth the battle. When I first saw this sign go up, I knew this place was going to be for me. And I automatically knew it was going to be a used outdoor gear shop. How? Am I a marmot whisperer? (I am, but that's not how I knew) If you've ever been up in the mountains a decent number of times, you have undoubtedly seen these fat bastards. Sunning on rocks, eating flowers, standing curiously on their hind legs, poking out of burrows, and generally being shockingly unafraid of humans and awkwardly adorable. My goal was to review this place on Groundhog Day (two days ago), which in Alaska is known as "Marmot Day" (it's true, look it up!), but I failed. FYI: the groundhog is a type of marmot. More specifically, it's a marmot that likes to live alone, in eastern North America, and it doesn't really like heights like most of its alpine brothers. Also, if you've been in the mountains for extended periods, you've probably got GAS. What is GAS? It's not something you get from eating dehydrated meals for a week (that's a different kind). It's Gear Acquisition Syndrome. You like to buy stuff you don't need. But you trick yourself by saying things like "but this will get me into the mountains more" or "but...but, my other three pairs of crampons don't have points like this". I have good news and I have bad news. Like beer, the Hoarding Marmot is both the solution and the answer to all your GAS problems. BUY: You can buy barely-used equipment here for some insane prices. I know what you're thinking; I've been to those places too. I've been to places with the same idea as the Hoarding Marmot, where you end up rooting around through lots of neon-colored stuff from the 80's and 90's that's all clumped together in a musty basement. Once in a blue moon, you might find something decent. But it's the exception, not the rule. Here, I found a pair of $500 ice climbing boots, barely used, for $100. Seriously, they looked brand-new. (Scarpa Rebel Pro GTX, if you're curious) If you want to get into ice climbing, there are some pretty good deals on used crampons. Some aren't in the greatest shape, but the pricing always accurately reflects the quality. Some great "starter" crampons here. It looked like they had a TON of skiing stuff too, but I'm not a skier and can't comment on the merits of the selection. They also have a tiny little rock wall in the corner to try out the rock shoes! I saw some of those that, like my ice climbing boot acquisition, looked more-or-less new. They didn't have a ton of clothing, but what they did have was from pretty legit brands and in good shape. SELL: I haven't sold anything here yet, but they seem to have a pretty well-organized system for selling items. There's a great explanation on their website. DEFINITELY: Check them out. Especially if you're new to mountain-stuff, and haven't yet developed GAS. Join us. BONUS: They accept Amex, which an increasing number of Anchorage business hate to accept. read more

Sometimes I find gear here and I look at the price and I'm like, "Wow, that's a steal of a deal!" Other times I find a well-loved product and can't believe they still want the price on the tag. I believe some prices are higher because the product is either brand new (tag still attached) or basically brand new. These prices make some sense. This does beg the question: If they were brand new, why weren't they returned for full price? One of the best factors of this place is the chance to sell your used gear. I recently sold a pair of hiking boots. If you use the money acquired by the sale in store, they give you 10% off and any balance you have stays in your account and NEVER expires. The staff is very friendly and they all go out of their way to give advice, information and just be friendly overall. Stock is always changing so go often to peruse. read more

Good selection of snow gear with mostly decent prices, unfortunately the employees were pretty rude to my group during our time there. I asked the guy who was checking me out about returns (they don't take any) and he ignored me, so I asked again thinking he didn't hear and was rudely answered by the other girl at the register. Love this place! We visited from out of town and ended up going there three separate times to find gear we were missing. The staff was helpful and knowledgable, and if they didn't immediately know the answer to a question, they would look it up or find someone who knew more. I like how organized this place is. Some places just get so overwhelming when you feel like you have to just dig through crap strewn everywhere, but not here! I found a Black Diamond jacket in great condition for a steal, and ski boots as well. I feel like I can walk in here any time and walk away with something, whether I need it or not. Do inspect what you're getting and read the tags - they'll usually give brief descriptions as well if anything should be noted like tears in clothing. Definitely give this spot a try before going to get anything new from the big stores because you never know what you'll find and what great condition it can be in. read more

I purchased a mammut jacket from there. It was a little overly priced but I liked it so I made the purchase. When I got home I noticed a disgusting smell. I called and asked (same day) if I could return or exchange or get store credit,basically any kind of help really. They said sorry no we can't do anything about it. When I go to the store I don't do a "smell check" because naturally a professional shouldn't or wouldn't sale a smelly product. I was disappointed because they were very rude, refused to compensate in any way and then just basically said "sorry Charlie" to me. My family will not be returning to that store due to the fact that they sale used expensive stuff without any exception of return of their stinky products. read more

This is an awesome little shop. Definitely check them out. Being as they are right across from REI and right behind Bear Tooth, it's convenient to go check them out and see what they have. You will find everything at reasonable pricing. Most gear is used and the pricing reflects that. If you're like me, you can't afford to always go buy brand new at full retail. This place is perfect for those that love high end gear but cant always afford to buy it new. After browsing the shop, a lot of the clothing is in good to great condition. Other gear is in varying states of condition form new to good to fair, but again pricing reflects the condition it's in. There is many brands there; Patagonia seems to be the biggest majority in clothing but there is also brands like Marmot, Arcteryx among others. There is talk of them looking at getting into some fishing gear as well with the coming season. Check them out, it's an impressive little shop and they are definitely in a niche market that no one else is doing. read more

I'm used to going to play it again sports or REI, but I have never had an experience like at the hoarding marmot! The staff is wonderful and knowledgeable. The gear is the best prices In town, and they have fantastic quality control. I absolutely love when they have their BUFF fundraisers. The Buffs are colorful and unique, I participated in one for avalanche rescue teams. Great place to go and peruse used/barely used clothing and gear. They often have great additional sales going on - like right now is an extra 20% some items. You can find even better deals towards end-of-season. I dropped of about 5 items and they all sold quickly. The deals are great for not only the buyer, but for the consignor as well. Great idea for an Anchorage outdoor gear store! Super deals on bike tires and gear right now. As the signage indicates, it is "buyer beware", but it looks like the store staff does a good job of not putting poor quality items out. This is the place to go FIRST for good used gear before you have to shell out big $$$ for new; and yes a friendly helpful staff. Great place to do business with! Dana is very helpful. I needed a pair of mountaineering boots. I found The Hoarding Marmot online and sent an email. Dana responded quickly and gave me several pairs of boots to choose from. I live in Maryland, so we communicated via email and phone. Dana sent pictures and detailed measurements of the boots. He worked with me on the best shipping method and when I finally got the boots, they fit perfectly and were exactly what Dana described in his emails. A month later I used the boots on Mt. Rainier. Anchorage really needed a consignment outdoor gear shop, and the Hoarding Marmot does a great job filling this niche. I've been in several times and have always received fantastic service and help. The sales people are always ready to answer a question, whether I call to check on a consigned item or show up in person to browse the racks. I've consigned everything from a bike rack to hiking boots to convertible pants, and have found some great treasures at very reasonable prices. Limited selection of winter gear. Some was overpriced however there were good deals to be had. The two star rating is for the customer service. The two male employees working in there were talking negatively about a customer after she left. Dudes, REALLY?....! There were other customers in there - what a turn off.
