5 Wings Dinner
Erika S.

When i worked over in this neighborhood i used to eat here at least once a week. I was in NE and wanted some food from here. Does not matter how long it has been the chicken is always the best! It's crispy and flavorful where you do not even need a sauce. I got mac and cheese and broccoli as my side. Bae loves the mac and cheese and cornbread. Definitely have to try this spot if you are not familiar!

there was a time in yester year when this place had GREAT food. A kinda of neighborhood, family owned meeting spot. I was excited to try it again with my family in tow. Quite possibly one of the worst meals I've had in a long long while, and still pretty darn expensive to boot. fried chicken. while it looked good, was clearly frozen and quickly thawed for cooking. the skin was pretty tasty but simply a blanket for mostly freezer burned and thus hard and dry meat. Let's talk about the $10 sides. Mac and cheese that tasted more like bland buttered noodles void of cheese. I was excited about the potato salad but to my dismay it's grossly sweet! who does that?! The pinch of sugar would do well in the bitter collard greens. Lastly, the fried chicken dinners average about $25 a piece for carry out. Now i'm a foodie and would hardly complain if it weren't so incredibly disgusting. . Sorry. i'm all for neighborhood, family owned businesses that unite communities, but the sweet little old couple that has run this place for years needs to retire. I'm giving it 1 star only because of nostalgia.

This is a wonderful little local spot, with delicious food and wonderful service. Came for the fried whole fish and fried chicken and we were not disappointed. The fried fish was perfectly battered, fresh and very tasty. Fried wings were juicy and delicious. Kiddo also ordered the burger , and it came in great size, she couldn't finish most of it. Appreciate the bartender who was also our waitress suggested the perfect cocktail to pair with our meal. Street parking only. Our overall experience was very satisfactory and highly recommended by @WineDinenVacay

Fried Snapper Dinner

Sat at the bar, had the fried snapper dinner paired with cabbage and Mac and cheese. The fried snapper was exactly, fried fresh and came out HOT, which I loved. Being greeted when walking in is the normal here! I came here during happy hour, but the Snapper was todays special it is not on their normal day to day menu!

Crispy Spinach

This place is a gem. This is our favorite spot for our monthly girls' hangout! The food is always delicious--crispy spinach, neck bones & lima beans, and my personal favorite, the catfish. Alexia is amazing! She's always so helpful and handles our group of 10+ with ease and a smile. Milano is hands down my favorite bartender--if you need a drink, he'll make it just right every time. We've been coming here for over a year and look forward to it every month. Stop by, say hello to Milano, and grab a rum punch--you won't be disappointed!

Atomic Burger

So the spot has been around since 1967. Now that definitely qualifies as being a DC staple. When you're around that long, there's something that you're doing right. So I had to go find out what that was. Where I am: http://thehpostrestaurant.com . Location Reviewed: 200 Upshur St., N.W. Washington D.C. . Menu Includes: Neckbone & Beans, Fish &Fries, Fried Pickles, & Crispy Spinach as appetizers. Cornbread, Fries, Cabbage, & Coleslaw as sides. Chicken Dinners, Pork Chops, Lamb Chops, Shrimp, Ribs, & Fish as entrees'. Burgers, Chicken sandwiches, Fried Catfish, & Crabcake sandwiches are also offered. They have a full bar as well. . What I reviewed/rating; Their Fish & Chips( fried whiting with hand cut fries $8-Happy hour price). DECENT. This starter was good. That's it. I wasn't wowed. Good price. The "Atomic" Burger (with bacon, onions, mushrooms, peppers, & cheddar $14). STAMP!! Juicy, & Spicy...the peppers, onions & cheddar brought this burger together!! Their side of potato salad ( came with the burger) was actually DELICIOUS!! It was recommended, I got it...I FINISHED it...which is not my norm with this dish. The Mac n Cheese (entree' side)was DELICIOUS as well. With a more creamy cheese rather than dense. Their Collard greens(entree' side)...DELICIOUS!! Seasoned well, it definitely had a meat as a conduit. Thumbs up!! Lastly I reviewed their Fried Chicken (2 breast 2 wings $20)...STAMP!! Fries to perfection!! Crispy, seasoned...you don't need any sauce with these!! . Customer Service: Excellent, informative, and pleasant. . Online Navigation: Fairly simple, no contact 3rd party delivery available. . Parking: Street. No meters. Outside seating available. . Recommendation: The Fried Chicken won't fail you here!! =STAMP =DELICIOUS =DECENT =PASS =NAH #Bjgschlimsreviews

Croquetas creamy chorizo fritters, saffron aioli 16 - least favorite, couldn't really identify the chorizo very strongly - it was just a creamy croqueta - just ok. We ended with the labneh pumpkin cheesecake for dessert. It was ok. Not my favorite but pumpkin seeds on top were tasty and crunchy!

Lots to enjoy here…read more Food is excellent and for tapas style the portion sizes lean in the large direction. Prices are very reasonable for DC and the quality. Loved the kefta lamb skewer. Perfectly cooked and seasoned. The piquillo tahini and sumac onions added more flavor punch. The hummus was exceptional. Strong tasty chickpea and garlic flavors balanced by lemon and dill. The pickled turnips presented in a flower shape was a nice touch. Service was excellent. Reservations via Open Table.

After having a full meal with cocktails, appetizer, entree, dessert and coffee (about $70 per person), I concluded that Atxondo will be a definite future destination for Happy Hour and light bites, but that my full meal dining dollars will be spent elsewhere. The Patatas Bravas (Fingerling Potatoes) were outstanding, with their two tasty sauces and rich, crispy flavor and texture. The Hibiscus Margarita with its salt and tajín rim was good enough to warrant a second one... but the Sangria was lackluster due to the complete absence of cut-up fresh fruit in my glass. The "Crispy Duck Breast" is no longer served whole, but sliced on a bed of sauteed kale... and, sadly, seemed to be only a shadow of its former self. The Lamb Meatballs suffered from being mushy (a coarser grind would have made a world of difference in the texture) and lacked that meaty exuberance one treasures in any kind of meatball. My serving of Basque Cheesecake was almost comically tiny (at $9 per serving, perhaps not so funny after all). But my cup of Americano came out of the espresso machine strapping strong and piping hot, with a gorgeous head of natural crema from the oil of the coffee beans. So I will definitely return for a future Happy Hour to devour the outstanding Patatas Bravas and sip the good Margaritas, and to try the bargain Manchego Burger and other Happy Hour bites. For serious dining, Atxondo falls short of the mark... but for drinks and bar food, Atxondo turns out to be a real neighborhood gem. .

Finding metered street parking was easy. Later found out there's a paid parking lot in the back. They're open daily. Olive is a nice mix of Mediterranean, Middle Eastern, and American cuisine. The space was much bigger than I initially realized. We sat in the front of the space but there's a bigger bar in the middle and outdoor seating! They have happy hour Monday to Friday, 4 - 7, in addition to daily specials! I tried the samosas and they were delicious! The happy red wine (a merlot) was really good. I got a few glasses. I came in the front not even knowing that the back area existed. There's a whole other bar, some cool decor and everything. The mezza platter on Mondays is such a steal! Money aside, everything in it is so delicious and worth it. And I love that it is totally vegetarian -- grape leaves usually half before lamb in them, so it was a nice surprise to see that they didn't. I'd be excited to try their $10 burger Tuesdays and other great daily deals. Happy hour is every weekday from Monday to Friday ... And the staff were super friendly and attentive, including the one who just recently started (I think her name was Heather?). I would be delighted to return! Mediterranean + bar food makes for a fun time.

A gentleman who worked there offered to take a photo of us, after watching us struggle with a selfie, the staff quickly grabbed an extra chair when we had a 5th guest, and our waitress was attentive, knowledgeable and sweet. While waiting for the rest of our party I tried two drinks. I can recommend both- retro passion and bourbon ginger beer concoction. We followed that with arancini and fried artichoke. Yes and yes. For the main meals, they generously let us slip large portions. I tried the short rib parpadelle, and although a tad under seasoned, everything was prepared properly and my pasta was perfectly al dente. Out of the 5 who visited 3 did not care for their meal, but I think we could all agree that the drinks, apps, and portions were on point. *So, we ended up grabbing dinner here two days after our initial visit- I can't say I recommend the octopus, and the beef carpaccio was "take it or leave it", but the gnocchi was pillowy perfection...just know that this is a heavy dish!

What really stood out though was the service. We were a little early on our Resi before the restaurant opened. Rather than have us wait in the rain, the staff let us in. They don't split checks, but they did it for us anyway. It's those kinds of little gestures that really make a difference. Bonus- great leychee martini.

Started off with the "Taste of Spain" which included Pan con tomate, Aged manchego, Jamón Ibérico de bellota, and Boquerones con naranja. Since I couldn't eat the latter two, the server said they could double the first two, which was so appreciated. For my first course, I chose the Escalivada (fire-roasted eggplant, red pepper, labne yogurt, fresh herbs, olive oil, served with focaccia) and Croquetas de setas (creamy mushroom croquettes with truffle aioli). The Escalivada was tasty, but more on the tangy side; the bread was more crostini-like than focaccia. The Croquetas were so good: creamy, savory, umami inside and crunchy outside. Next, I got the Zanahorias (spiced baby carrots, sweet and sour reduction, orange honey yogurt, mojo verde, Marcona almonds) and Patatas bravas (crispy potatoes, salsa brava, pimentón, garlic aioli). When I tell you those carrots had me dreaming about them later, I'm not kidding- all of the different flavor combos paired with the perfectly cooked carrots were amazing. The Patatas bravas was pretty classic- crispy potatoes with creamy aioli and tangy tomato sauce. Finally, for dessert, I had the Tarta de naranja (orange olive oil cake, citrus-honey yogurt), and my friend had the Tarta vasca de chocolate (Basque chocolate cheesecake, macerated strawberries, chantilly cream). Both were tasty, but the Tarta de naranja was so good: perfectly dense cake, refreshing citrus, and great contrast with the yogurt. For my drink, I got the Forget-Me-Not refrescante (butterfly pea flower, thyme, honey, lime, ginger beer). Very interesting drink, not sure I'd order again but it was good. Service was great, super willing to accommodate my vegetarian dietary restrictions. Ambiance is really nice, very modern and elegant. But anyways Paella was delicious, the flavor profile was super fun. We got the short rib and seafood, and we all preferred seafood as the short rib was a bit heavy. I did not like the patatas... sauce was good but the potato itself had none of its own seasoning and was tough. Yes crispy but not pillowy inside. The octopus was delicious and super tender. Would come back for seafood paella and charcuterie.
