Not feeling the after hours at all! First, they take pictures of your ID and of you. That makes me very uncomfortable. They charge $5 for basically a whole in the wall vibe. They don't have any name brand liquor. Everything was off brand, plastic bottle, house liquor . The music on a Friday night was terrible. It was a mix of Spanish and hip hop from 2005. This is my boyfriend and I's go-to spot when we come to DTR! The reason being that we know this place plays hip-hop/r&b/rap on the weekends! It always gets packed around 10:30, 11 ish. The drinks are priced appropriately. The atmosphere is fun and I haven't had any concerns other than going one night last week and the DJ playing songs barely anyone has heard of or songs you really couldn't dance to. There is a cover charge, I believe they start charging after 10 but I'm not quite sure. One night I came at around 9:30 and didn't get charged. It's $5 per person. Also the bathroom line for the womens restroom is always long! Only two stalls :( sometimes there isn't toilet paper or the floors are wet & slippery. We detoured to Riverside on our way home to Arizona from LA. I noticed the sign touting home made soup and specialty sandwiches for the Hideaway on the sidewalk and wanted to see what was at the bottom of those stairs. The place is done up like a little tree house, the decor theme and retro music alone make it worth a visit. Simple but tasty food, you order at the counter and they bring to your table. I wouldn't go here again! We went to the bar and ordered a whiskey sour and an adios. Both drinks were appalling. Whiskey sour tasted like cough syrup and the adios like windex! So many people there that we knew there was no way we could complain to the bartender so we swallowed the $18 (yes,$18) left the drinks and walked out. The security guard heard us complaining to each other on the way out and let us know they aren't even using real liquor. It's just doctored up rice wine that they are trying the pass off! read more

Went on Sunday because there were signs advertising $1 hot cocoa. When I went inside (around 1:20 pm) the worker said the hot cocoa wouldn't be available until 2:00 pm, so I took a look at the antique shop for about 40 minutes. After time had passed, I went and asked the worker for hot cocoa and he said it wouldn't be available all day. When my group got there she asked me for my ID and I pulled it out of my shirt, where women often keep their stuff when they don't want to hold a purse or wallet. She looked so discussed. Like seriously you touch money for a living. Then a couple of my friends jokingly asked her why they didn't get carded and she said I only card people who look under 40 ( none of us are 40 and she carded only me) we laughed and she replied with an attitude saying "that's why I hate when people ask me that." We obviously did not like how we were treated but my friend said she looked nervous so we gave her the benefit of the doubt and went up for another beer. At first, my experience was wonderful. There was a fantastic bartender (Bryan) who really lifted the experience. Then, a female bartender took over and gave me enough sass to almost make me tear up. This place is terrible. First off when we went in no body could get service from the bar tenders to save their life. Took about half an hour before anyone even started getting orders in for drinks. Then my friend in our group of 5 ALL OVER 21 no question. The bar tender decided to ID our group AFTER we all had been served our drinks and kicked us all out because "a couple things were suspicious about his ID" then we told him to go ahead and call the cops and fill out the paperwork as he threatened to do an decided he was just going to be louder than anyone else just to make us get out spilling drinks on many of my group (90% women by the way) we just decided to leave because obviously this guy had no ground to stand on and wasn't doing his job properly. The cashier seemed very unsure of what she was doing (i.e. taking a really long time to ring up when I was prepared with my order). I've never seen another salad dressing like it. And the worst is that my tuna melt was cold. The fries were cold and hard enough (BURNT) to a point of not enjoying them. Had high hopes, but, as an out of towner, i probably wouldn't suggest going knowing there are likely better spots around the immediate area. DONT WASTE YOUR TIME! Very overpriced. I came on Valentine's Day with my hubby and the Cheapest pitcher of beer was $18 for shock top. And it was a very small disappointing pitcher. I've been to dive bars with bigger pitchers that were way cheaper than this. They don't even have Budweiser or anything like that. They also don't have any name brand liquor but their drinks were 7.50 for a vodka tonic well!! Apparently they are "too hipster" to carry well or even top shelf liquor they only carry one overpriced brand that I've never heard of. Wtf. And the bartender was extremely rude and very unhelpful when I was asking about the prices. She rolled her eyes and turned away when I asked why they didn't carry any top shelf liquor. When she came back with the small pitcher and handed me plastic cups I was so annoyed. 18$ for a pitcher and I don't even get a cold glass??... I mostly gave it a one star because of your bartender. We come here once monthly for a group get together. The fries are $6 for a cone and pretty amazing. The Gouda mac and cheese bites are amazing but they're about $9.75. The location is neat as it's in a basement underneath a cafe and antique store. It's also right across from the Mission Inn which normally has some sort of beautiful lighting going on. This place is spooky good! I found the Hideaway (such a PERFECT NAME) today while shopping in the antique store. I found this sunflower patterned casserole dish today, (something I've been searching for for a long time), and I was in a hurry to pay for it, since the time on our meter was running out. I was rushing upstairs to pay, then for the first time - I spotted this great dive bar from the corner of my eye! It's a secret spot that only locals know about - but be careful - word on the street is that this bar might be haunted - by spirits from the antique store! The former owners of all those antiques may be "attached" to their old dishes and furniture. They think that they're at home, but they're not at home. So - you're walking on hallowed ground in there. (But I don't believe in ghosts - do you?) The Hideaway offers lots of cold drinks, and some top-shelf booze for the hard-drinkers who need a buzz. Also there are lots of salty snacks, fresh salads, and a menu to order hot food. I hear that they play musical chairs in the bar area. An old patron told me this story today - he said that his name was, Old Timer. He was dressed like Indiana Jones, and he talked real softly, but he was friendly, so my friend and I sat near him to hear his tales. "Old Timer" was sitting in the corner all by himself - he told me that jazz musicians come here to drink on slow nights, when the moon is full. They sit on bar stools that spin, and when they spin really fast one rotation, the barkeep serves them a small drink. They have to drink if fast as they can, or the drink will disappear into thin air!!!! If they spin 360 twice without stopping, and they spin fast, the bar keep serves them a medium sized drink with twice the booze. But they have to gulp it down really quickly, or the drink will fizz into the air!!! If patrons spin 360 three times, spinning as fast as they can, the bar keep will serve them a triple hard drink!!!! They have to throw it down like it's water,, or the drink will vanish.... Nobody knows who this barkeep is; or how he drains the drinks he serves....it's rumored he's a ghost and he's the only barkeeper that plays by these rules. I asked if this bar keeper was working today, but Old Timer said he doesn't come in until midnight. Sometimes he doesn't come in at all, so you're lucky if he ever serves you. Whatever you do - please do NOT spin your bar stool more than 3 times, or the burly bouncer who gets a bad headache from the Karaoke singers will kick you OUT! There are pool tables in the back, that favor pretty ladies who shoot pool back there, but the lady has to dress up like a swamp witch in order for the haunted tables to roll her balls into the pockets. It's a stacked game - if you're the right type of gal. There's a funny guy who hangs from a tight rope overhead the bar. He's a clarinet player, who loves to practice his clarinet when the moon is dark. Legend has it that every now and then, this lonely jazz man can be heard playing his saxophone, but nobody knows from which room he preforms or prefers. Check out the Hideaway Joint!!! I am only reviewing their take-out. A girlfriend and I stopped in to get some lunch. Their menu isn't huge but offers plenty of choices. We quickly realized that a lot of the employees from nearby offices stop by to pick up lunch on their lunch break--it was a bit busy but the service was still quick. Due to the rush, the bartender was also taking orders so that helped expedite the process. The decor is quite eclectic, kinda divey/tropical, if that's a thing. We both got our orders, no problems with them, and both liked our respective sandwiches. If I could give this place zero stars I would, usually I look forward to Wednesday nights because The Hideaway has 50cent wings $4 drinks, and fairly good service, tonight all they had was an incompetent bartender. It's captivating to me that management is at all okay with their bartender being distracted by her friends at the bar to the extent that she messes up on drinks, and refuses to take a food order on the basis that it's "inconvenient." She took my initial order, didn't give me a table number and then proceeded to blame me when she didn't believe that I had ordered my own food. Then she claimed that she put my other "inconvenient" food order in (which was wings on wing Wednesday) only to have me wait a full hour patiently (on my birthday). After waiting a full hour I gave up and finally asked for a refund just to find out that my food order was never even put through in the first place. Through some kind of dark magic she charged me for my wing order while SOMEHOW MAKING SURE the kitchen never even found out what I wanted. Normally this place was my go to but because of tonight, I have to keep that in past tense. I don't know if I'll be going back here ever again. read more

Entering the bar, only two or three tables were occupied with most of the action being at the bar. We had to seat ourselves and after waiting about five minutes finally went up to ask if we could order our meals. I get that this is a bar, but if you're going to have tables and serve food, at least include a dinner staff to serve your other patrons. Moving on to the food, I ordered the BBQ sandwich while my accomplice ordered the Reuben. For $7 apiece, the food was good, but nothing I'd go out of my way for. I ordered a glass of Pinot Grigio with my dinner, and the taste was watery and boring. To put it simply, a wheat thin has more flavor and complexity than this wine had. I've been hit and miss here, but I'm glad I gave it a couple chances. The first time I went, we were in a big group and several of us had ordered the two types of BBQ sandwich that were on the menu at the time. I'd ordered first, but my food never came. We figured out later that they had misidentified the first sandwich that came out (mine) as the type of meat my coworker ordered. They made me a replacement quickly enough, and gave us some free cookies as an apology. They handled it well, but with our lightning fast lunch breaks, it was annoying at the time. When I finally returned, I ordered something foolproof - grilled cheese - and I was delighted with it. A good blend of cheeses, and they added a tomato (by my request), which made it perfect. So we returned...and on another large group visit, they messed up our order by bringing the wrong kind of soup. It meant some free soup for our table - so no complaints here. I think big groups might be trouble for them - and who can blame a small restaurant like that? The place isn't fantastic - you'll get more 'gourmet' sandwiches from Simple Simon's or Phood - but it's a good cheap sandwich replacement for Mission Square Cafe, which closed in 2010. Out of my coworkers, I think I'm the only one who likes the over the top decor. It's like the basement that tries too hard. I love it.
