Second time I order in 6 months for takeout then delivery. Ordered takeout and they screwed up my combo order (ribs and steak tips) and gave me the less desirable half of my combo (steak tips) and not the other. It tasted good enough but was pretty disappointed as we sat at the park to eat. Ordered delivery tonight for another combo (ribs and wings). I knew before I even opened the box something was off. They gave me the smallest, half rack of the small end of the rack I've ever seen in my life! Guess they save the large side for din in customers?? Gotta say even if it was the larger side of the rack it still would've been smaller than a normal small end. The wings were meaty but not great either on the cook and flavor. Mac and cheese was cheesy but bland and garlic mashed potatoes lacked just about everything good mashed potatoes have, dry and bland. I needed my wife's pulled pork to add any flavor to both. The 4 of us went on a Thursday afternoon. We were the only ones in the restaurant, so it felt kind of exclusive. Our waitress was nice and the bathrooms were clean. I believe The Hickory Hog's specialty is barbecue, so I opted for a pulled pork barbecue sandwich. Let me tell you- this sandwich was dynamite. There was so much flavor from the pork, and the barbecue sauce added the perfect kick. It's a generous serving for the price, so A+ overall. My friends ordered a chicken, bacon and cheese sandwich, and another ordered a chicken wrap. No complaints from any of the dishes. I don't live near Point Pleasant, but if I'm ever in the area, I will most definitely return to The Hickory Hog. read more

Recently went to a party that was catered by Hickory Hog, and I was pleasantly surprised! I am not a huge fan of bbq food, especially at big parties, but this was delicious. The Mac and cheese was gooey, cheesy, and so savory. The pulled pork and bbq chicken were moist and flavored perfectly. I don't think I have ever had bbq chicken this moist and juicy. As well, the chicken wings were flavored to perfection, crispy, and not dry at all. I highly recommend Hickory Hog for any who enjoy bbq food, or are interested in catering bbq food. We've really liked going to Hickory Hog before Covid when they had dine in. We've ordered via pickup on Saturday, 8/7/21, as inside dining is still not available. Counter person claims it's because they can't get employees, but almost every other restaurant in the area was able to get employees for inside dining. I know times are rough right now, but I didn't see any "Now Hiring" signs or sign on bonus signs. You have to make an attempt to attract new employees. Regarding this order, we ordered two orders of steak tips, and one order of ribs. The prices really went up!!! The steak tip dinner is now $31! I could see if they had to hire employees at a hire rate, but there's no inside dining! This is a restaurant that is taking advantage of Covid! Just not right. Not only did they raise the prices, but the portion size is smaller. Also, the onion loaf is half the size that it used to be. See the attached pics for what we got for the $31 steak tip orders. What a joke! It's a real shame because we like this place, but the lack of dining, price increases, and smaller portions are now a deal breaker for us. Stopped in on a rainy day and it was a pleasant experience. I ordered the rib feast bc for two bucks more why not get the extra! It was beyond great, ribs were hot and fell off the bone. I usually get the Memphis dry rub but today got the sauce and fond my new favorite. I'm picky on bbq sauce and theirs was soooo good, not Smokey or mesquite but flavorful! The meat was plentiful and burnt on some parts yet still moist. The tatter tots were crisp. The Mac and cheese is wet which was nice. The corn bread also tasty! No complaints here, they even gave extra sauce for him! Also had the pickle spears, nice and fresh! My date had the pulled park sandwich was good. I'm not a pulled pork person but the meat was good and bread fresh. Will be back sooner than later! And the waitress was so sweet and welcoming and checked in on us at all the right times! Our favorite bbq in town. Family run, always have the best service! Our fav dishes include the ribs (love the Memphis dry rub and then add sauce if desired), onion loaf is a must and wings are big and always cooked perfectly. Great fries, coleslaw and garlic mashed redskin potatoes. Also fan of the 2 meat platter with pulled pork and smoked chicken. Of the burgers, our fav is BBQ Jersey burger topped with pulled pork. We are locals and enjoy finding great barbecue. We have visited the Hickory hog over six times in the last two years. We are fans of their pulled pork brisket and ribs as well as their mac & cheese. Unfortunately the baked beans here are super sweet and overbearing. The cornbread seems to be lacking a tasteful ingredient and I would not recommend spending the extra money to add pieces on to your order. On my last visit a recent Friday night in September I ordered for pick up at about 545. I really wanted to order pulled pork or the brisket sandwich however I was told that their meats or pork would not be ready until closer to 7 PM. Asked if they were sold out and was told no they're just not ready yet so my concern is that it is a weekend evening and most of your pork products are not ready to eat until after seven. Even with limited hours I don't quite understand why you would not have food ready until that late. We needed to pick up some food so we ended up ordering one of the few things that were ready besides chicken which were ribs which were tasty but unfortunately not what we wanted. Concerning, their COVID-19 precautions there were next to none. I walked in and a Young man young woman and an older woman were all standing at the front counter talking without any masks or gloves on. The young man at the register quickly put the mask over his mouth while ringing me up however it seemed that I was inconveniencing them from their conversation to pick up my food. The other two ladies never put their masks on and were close to the counter. The young man picked up forks and spoons with his bare hands and threw them on the counter which I threw out as soon as I left the building. I don't like giving bad reviews - honestly. Maybe this isn't a bad review...however this place wasn't my preference. The service was great!!!! That means a lot when you are paying money. The prices are very fair. The place was very clean (which is a plus because it seems restaurants lack this lately)...including the bathroom. VERY CLEAN!!! However, the food was very very bland and flavorless. My wife had the ribs and shrimp with collard greens, sweet potatoes fries and cornbread. I tried her plate and was turned off. I had the wings which were garlic Parmesan and bbq. The BBQ sauce wasn't bad but I could not taste the garlic or the Parmesan. In addition, any place where you don't smell food, you kind of question if they are even cooking lol. It didn't smell like a bbq place or nothing. Although I probably wouldn't visit again, their menu has a lot of choices and I am certain someone would like it. So give it a try at least. I stopped by here last week after passing by a few times going to Pat's Pizza next door. I got in the mood for barbecue and thought I would give Hickory Hog a try. I was somewhat concerned by the total lack of reviews on here but can safely say I was pleasantly surprised. The restaurant is a bit small, but nice and clean. My waitress was very friendly and attentive. I ordered a Carolina pulled pork sandwich with fries and cole slaw. The cole slaw was pretty standard fare but a good side. I would say the same thing about the fries. Really though, I went for the sandwich and this is where Hickory Hog excelled. The pulled pork was nice and tender and came on a bun that was just lightly toasted. It was great by itself and even better with a bit of the barbecue sauce that was on the table. I was somewhat concerned that one sandwich wouldn't be enough for lunch but that definitely wasn't a problem. For $8 or so it was a pretty great lunch. The reason I give them 4 stars instead of 5 was because, like I said, the sides were pretty standard. The fries were good but standard frozen fries. Ribs were outstanding tasted both the St, Louis and Baby back ribs and both were fall of the bone tender. The side were hit and miss the mac and cheese was good so was the corn bread. The collard greens were a lit bland. The cole slaw was good but not as creamy as discribed. Also had a bowl of chili this was good but not outstanding. That said, I came for the ribs and was happy I did the ribs exceeded my expectations and the portions, quality, and quantity were all excellent. I will return when I am in the area again. read more

I went there last night after seeing an article on MSN a few weeks ago. When you walk in, it looks like a no frills place with a counter and wood tables. I like places like this because they tend to let the food do the talking. The food was excellent. Our table had baby back ribs, pulled pork, pulled chicken, corn bread, french fries, sweet potato fries, mac and cheese, and coleslaw. The ribs may have been the best I have had. They were fall of the bone tender, and has a perfect coat of sauce and crust on them. The 12 hours of low and slow cooking shows. They also have ribs with a dry rub that I will have to try. I've had their baby back ribs (perfect), roasted chicken, and have eaten their pulled chicken sandwiches which are out of this world! The bright yellow Mac&Cheese tasted like your standard fast food chain M&C. I expected better. The sweet potato fries were a lil soggy and did not look very appetizing. Flavor was OK. Service: Our waiter was the counter guy, maybe because it was a slow night. He was very friendly and pretty attentive. Decor: Nothing to talk about. TV on the wall, standard tables. Pretty generic. Pros: BYOB with a liquor store right next door. Place was clean. I've been doing my own BBQ for years. I also attend the Memphis World Championship BBQ Contest and personally know some of the pit crews there. So I think it's fair to say that my expectation of BBQ is probably a bit higher then most. I grew up in Point Pleasant and was not formally introduced to ribs until 2013. Hickory Hog is by far and away the best BBQ place I have ever been to. Does the atmosphere suck? Absolutely. But the food easily makes up for it. I even went so far as to do a taste test in the same day between Hickory Hog and Woodchuck, not even in the same area code. I live in Monmouth County now and still make the 20 minute drive to HH for the baby backs. If they opened up a location in Red Bank, they would make a KILLING. read more

A large bucket of roast chicken, small bucket of baby back ribs, pulled pork , corn on the cob and fries and there was enough leftover for another meal. The pulled pork was served on a soggy roll and the pork was smothered in the sauce, so you couldn't taste the pork. Boyfriend had the ribs/brisket combo with side of Mac n Cheese & Red roasted garlic potatoes (hard pressed to taste any garlic), Ribs did fall off the bone like promised but the taste again just didn't do it for us.
