I had such a great experience with Kelsey & Jon from start to finish. I have been wanting to transform my hair with shades of purple & pink for so long & Kelsey finally made my dreams come true. She took into consideration the texture of my hair & we were able to get it to a lovely pinky/purple hue without bleaching it. Kelsey was kind, detail oriented, and overall incredibly pleasant. Even though Jon didn't work on my hair, he sat down in between his appts to chit chat with me while Kelsey worked on my hair for almost 4 hours. I enjoyed the conversations I had with both Kelsey & Jon and the overall experience felt like I was getting my hair done by a close friend in a really comfortable setting. Going through the reviews, I decided to give The Head Shed a shot at my hair. Honestly, at that point, a huge disaster was almost close to impossible and if it did happen, I'd just shave it off; I was over my hair. Just about two months ago, I decided to cut my mid - back length hair to an edgy asymmetrical pixie style. I'm mixed which means I have mixed hair and according to charts, my hair texture is 3b/c. I don't have a "regular" hair stylist so I just went to a salon after another yelp reviewing and long story short, it was a complete failure and I was extremely upset and disappointed with the outcome. I found a way to "style" my awful chop and once it grew enough, I researched again and found The Head Shop. I explained to Kelsey what happened, showed her a couple of pictures, we talked about the cut, and she started her work. I had scheduled a scalp treatment and a pixie cut and as she went through the treatment process, she gave me tips and advice for my scalp and styling, and we talked about Devacurl stylists and products. (I've never bought their products o r experienced a Devacurl cut but hear they're amazing for curlies.) Once she was done with the treatment, she blotted my hair and started the cut on damp and moisturized hair. The most impressive part of my experience with Kelsey is that she took SO much time on my hair. She literally took every curl and cut them the way I'd imagine a deva stylist would. When she was done there was nothing but perfect black Cs all over the floor. It was amazing and also the pixie was awesome. I've done a "big chop" when i was in college but it was literally a chop. What Kelsey cut and styled is really fabulous, I was SO happy when I saw my new cut. If I can keep Kelsey as my stylist, I know I'll have this look to upkeep for awhile instead of growing out my hair. Thank you again SO much!! read more

I can only speak to the quality of haircuts, as it's the only service I've used, but I've left each time so happy with my hair. John really listened to what my hair goals are and helped me clean up the ends, making my hair look so fresh and healthy while still preserving my length. I visited Josh for a cut and would definitely return. The space is relaxing and Josh and Kelsey are both so kind. The cut took about 45 minutes including shampoo which is definitely slightly shorter than other cuts I've had in the area (something I appreciate). I feel so lucky that I found this cool little place! Love the online booking option and how easy it was to get in to see John! I was warmly greeted into the fun space and offered a beverage. I didn't have to wait at all to get into the styling chair. John asked questions, offered suggestions and didn't seem in a rush at all. While cutting, John was the perfect balance of chatty but also chill. The cut is cool and my curls have not looked this good in a long time! Prices for services and products were very reasonable. Kelsey and John are both great. Kelsey has been coloring my hair since we moved to South Park last summer. I made a drastic color change but it turned out great. I love the color. The products she uses are fantastic and despite lightening my hair it's the best condition it's been in for years. Both Kelsey and John have cut my husbands hair and he has been very happy. We love that Kelsey and John are our neighbors, it's great to talk to them about the goings on of the neighborhood and to be able to support a local, small business. I recently went in for a haircut with absolutely no notice on a Saturday afternoon and was pleasantly surprised to see that they were open. Kelsey greeted me and was super friendly and more than willing to help tame my mane. She did an awesome job and listened very closely to what I wanted. The cut included a shampoo and condition, paraffin hand dip, and blow dry. Very relaxing! The best part, she cut my hair exactly like I had hoped for. The second best part, didn't chat my ear off or attempt to force a conversation. She allowed the conversation to happen organically! Fancy that! While there I learned that among their many services, they also offer a process called Uberliss Keratin Treatment. I learned that this was similar to a Brazilian Blowout but without the formaldehyde making it a much safer treatment. I've received Brazilian Blowouts before and always hated the smell and the fact that there needed to be a fancy ventilation system in order to not choke to death on the fumes. I promptly booked my service with her for that coming Tuesday. The keratin treatment process is long (much longer for me as I have hair down to my butt and it's also extremely thick), but now, after a little over a week since my treatment, I am in love! I've only rarely been able to get out of the shower and let my hair air dry and not end up with a big poof ball on the top of my head! The manageability of my hair as well as the smoothness and softness are such wonderful feelings. I highly recommend this place! Kelsey and John are absolutely wonderful people and so so good at what they do! Go! You won't be disappointed. read more

I hit up The Head Shed on short notice mainly because they're a new local business. I got much more than I bargained for. John was able to get me in pretty quickly...so off I went. The address takes you to a house, the actual shop is around the corner...obviously where the mannequin head is located. John and Kelsey are super nice, the atmosphere is super laid back. In fact so laid back that the resident stray cat, that may or may not be pregnant, was fighting sleep as well. I got a great cut. Every cut comes with a paraffin hand dip and shampoo and style...YEP...I'm in. Done, done, and almost fell asleep during the hot towel on my face and the straight razor lineup. It was super easy to make an appointment online. The shop is cute and cozy. Kelsey was amazing and very comfortable to be around. I told her what i wanted done and she listened and gave me some insights on what to expect. I was cutting off a lot of hair so Kelsey wanted to make me happy while not having unrealistic expectations of what my hair would look like since i hadn't had it cut that short before. She was very easy to talk to and was also not forcing the conversation. There are times when i hate going to the hairdressers because i dread the small talk. Kelsey didn't force the conversation which i appreciated, it just came naturally as we watched a documentary. My haircut itself was perfect for my face. I showed her a picture of what i wanted and she tailored it to my face. I constantly get compliments on my hair cut, even as it grows out. I was in Seattle for about 36 hours and wanted to do something nice for myself. I got an open spot and great response for scheduling what may as well have been a walk in appointment. They are really great artists with a warm and friendly manner. I love to support small business, and this being a family business was even better. The vibe was fun yet professional. I had been without a regular stylist for a couple of years when I read Kelsey's post on the neighborhood Listserv. This was before her shop had opened and she was making house calls! That was great because I booked appointments for both myself and my mom, in my own home! My mom has severe hair loss and has been chopping at her own hair for years because she's too embarrassed to be have anyone see her in a public salon/shop . About a year went by and The Head Shed opened just down the street from my home. What a cozy and welcoming space Kelsey and John have created! Kelsey was great at listening to my concerns about past cuts from other stylists that I wasn't happy with, always double checking with me before she snipped. I had an awesome "Curly Cut" with Kelsey recently and for the first time, not only was I happy with the cut, but the little shop/salon was really sweet. However, you should note that you don't want to get there too early, it is pretty small so if they are already with clients, the space is a little tight and you don't want to get in the way when someone is trying to checkout. To avoid in awkward/cramped moments, wait in your car and/or show up right on time. Ok - back to the haircut, I was surprised by some of the techniques that she used to cut my fine, curly hair but it resulted in a haircut that I have wanted for YEARS and have never been able to achieve. I have explained they style and shape when working with multiple stylists over the years, but they could never get it quite right. I didn't even explain the cut to Kelsey because I had given up on every getting it or having it work for my hair and her magic little hands just made it happen. I didn't realize how great the cut was until the next day, when I washed and styled it at home (people with curly hair understand, you never know how/if a cut will really work until you do your own curl routine at home), but I have fallen in love with it. So low maintenance and easy to care for... I LOVE IT!!! :D On top of the great cut, her and her husband were really easy to talk to and laugh with, great sense of humor and love of food!
