When the current experience matches the memory!!! In college I would go to the Hat in Brea a lot, and grab a pastrami burger and fries! This afternoon got to visit the Monterey Park location and was NOT disappointed at all. The food and service were exceptional. The pastrami on the burger was tender and so abundant I had to get a fork to finish what was leftover . Appreciate the cook for pre-cutting the burger as well. I paired my burger with a cherry coke. I haven't had this in over a year and I forgot how good it is. it's the perfect amount of cheesiness and flavor. Hadn't been to the hat in awhile. Came on a Saturday night and it was packed. The tables were all taken but once they became free nobody was really wipping them down. The pastrami sandwich was a bit too soggy and the meet was cold. The chili fries were crispy but they were missing salt. They are generous with the Chilli but it was missing some flavor. LOCATION - I visited their Monterey Park location, which was on a busy corner. Their parking lot is really small and I wasn't able to find parking. I had to go down into one of the residential streets. Not too bad but be prepared. FOOD - Ordered the Pastrami Chili Cheese Fries and Chili Cheese Dog. The Pastrami Chili Cheese Fries was huge! Lots of fries, which I wish were more crispy and seasoned, a good amount of delicious pastrami, and hearty chili cheese. Everything was really flavorful. The Chili Cheese Dog was also super good and bigger than I expected. It came with shredded (non-melted) cheddar cheese, pickles, mustard, tomato on a French roll. SERVICE - Despite being really packed and a line out the door, the workers were moving fast and getting things done. Service was decent overall. Always love coming to at The Hat. Don't live near by so we have to make a 30 minute drive out (without traffic). The food is very consistent and always delicious. This is one of the best pastrami places you will find. Chili fries are amazing as well. If you come during lunch time be prepared to wait for seating. The Hat is your classic old school burger joint. They serve tons of different things and known for lots. It has nice old school feel to it. The service is really good. I got the chili cheese fries and they were exactly what you would expect. A whole lot of chili and cheese on top of fries. The food was good never had a complain until Saturday when I ordered by phone for my family. The person that took the order over the phone did not pay attention and was not clear on what I ordered. And a pastrami the lady that answered the phone asked if I wanted chili and cheese on the fries and I said no just pastrami and fries with the side order of gravy please when I went to get my order I saw only one cup of gravy. I asked her for the second one and she said you only ordered one. I explained to her that I wanted to orders of pastrami fries with the side order of gravy she argued with me and said that I wasn't clear on my order how much clearer that I need to get yes I could've paid for the extra site order of gravy, but here's the thing. Why should I pay for her mistake? The worst customer service I've ever experience at the hat. I asked to speak to the manager. She said she was the manager and they quote like I said you were not clear on your order. That is not how you speak to a customer after going back-and-forth. I have to say i think i enjoy The Hat Pastrami sandwich a bit more than Johnies. The quality was about equal of the meat, but the amount you get at the Hat is twice that for near half the price. Also I had their onion Ring which were hot crispy and fabulous, and were even good the next day when i reheated some of them for lunch and the breading didnt fall off, impressive. Not only is the food great, but I must share this experience. I live close by this location and frequently eat there. A couple of weeks ago, I went and ordered some food. I got my food and left, a few minutes later I realized that I didn't have my wallet. After searching my place and car, I realized I must've dropped it there. I immediately called and was told it was found. I returned to retrieve my wallet and after first verifying it was mine (my DL was inside), it was returned to me. I was both shocked and happily surprised that my $2800 was still there. Night manager refused to accept a cash reward I offered and said it wasn't necessary. To the person who found my wallet and returned it, "Thank you" very much. I hope to someday buy you lunch, at the very least.
