Pastrami dip, sm onion rings, chili dog and Orange Bang
Val G.

This place is an LA icon. We have been coming for years. Today, we came here after a Dodger game and it was packed with fans. The place is small for the volume of people that come here but we were able to sit down to eat. We shared a pastrami dip and onion rings and my son also had the chili dog. And of course, all with an Orange Bang. Everything was so good. Had a huge case of FOMO when I saw several other clients eating their pastrami chili cheese fries. OMG; I think my stomach would kill me but what a way to go.

Can't go wrong! This place is a classic! The service was very nice and inviting! The food... yeah... if you can eat there because the food will be still warm and tasty! If not, the reheat ability is fine! The feeling inside was friendly, busy and efficient! I do plan to go again! There is god parking!

My Mother wanted an old fashioned pastrami sandwich. So we took her to The Hat for there "World Famous Pastrami". I've been to other The Hat locations and this one delivers the same high quality food! Mom got her pastrami and loved it!!! She said it was exactly what she had been craving... mission accomplished :) My Son and I had the Roast Beef w/ Gravy and shared an order of Gravy Fries. Oh so good, the gravy is thick and rich and the roast beef was well cooked and sliced fresh. Gravy fries are one of my favorite things and these are top shelf. The restaurant is clean with plenty of seating and the staff is friendly and delivers your order quickly. There is a private parking lot and some street parking around.

It's been a very long time going to The Hat and at this location. I would say about 10 years. The time was 6:30pm last night and we were able to get a table. There was no line so I was able to place my order quickly. The food has definitely changed over the years in my opinion when it comes to the size of the pastrami dip. It was good but the size portion was a smaller sandwich than it was in the past. The french fries were good and the service was nice.

If you're a pastrami lover then The Hat is your spot. They have everything from burgers to all things chili. Order at the counter and wait for your number to be called. When I was there, I only heard people ordering pastrami sandwich or chili cheese fries. So you know had to get each. The pastrami sandwich was hefty with piles of small and thin cuts. A little dry but still good. Chili cheese fries were heavy and so satisfying. Crispy fries and generous portion of chili/cheese. Portions are big and the prices are super reasonable.

I didn't know I could crave au jus sauce, pastrami sandwich, grilled cheese, and chili cheese fries but I am so glad my brother and I did!! At 11pm no less. Excellent people served us home cooked meals on a platter & the old diner vibes were immaculate. Thank you The Hat!! I'll be back soon.

Top food, one of the best chili cheese fries. I have yet to try their pastrami, which is what they are known for, but I swear one day I shall maybe next week. I do know chili cheese fries are fire tho!, so they are a must. Prices are also pretty good given the times, so a huge thumbs up and if you're craving some chili cheese fries; this is the spot.

My first time trying The Hat.. personally I did not like anything shown, the chili cheese fries, hotdog, or cheeseburgers. Everything was flavorless and tasted dry. However its no ones fault just standard recipe I guess? Nothing had seasoning everything was hot and coooked fresh its just the issue was nothing tasted like what it was ??? Fries dry , buns dry, chili cheese dry, burger meat skinnyyy, no seasoning no anything.. But everyone has different taste buds so I wont suggest anything else but supporting their business to help provide jobs. Customer service was incredible everyone there did their part and worked as fast as they could while maintaining quality and control.

An LA staple!! We stopped by on a Saturday night. We've been here before but this time it wasn't as busy as usual. The service is always fast, and the staff is helpful and friendly! We ordered a double cheeseburger and a JR cheeseburger (does not come with lettuce or tomato) and we also got the pastrami chili cheese fries! The burgers were delicious! I love that they're not dray at all! The chili cheese fries are good..but coming from a Tams girl, I prefer the chili cheese fries from Tams. The chili or maybe the fries..need a little more seasoning. I was also wondering if they would toast the pastrami if we asked. Maybe next time! Overall, yummy yummy!!

So this is what American food tastes like. I've driven by The Hat countless times but just tried it for the first time recently. The portions are definitely generous, and the pastrami was good, though a bit on the salty side. The sandwich overall was pretty solid, but the fries were way too heavy and kind of flavorless. It honestly reminded me of a high school lunch, which is not a good thing. I see the appeal of coming here after a night out, but it's not for me.

Tuna Sandwich with onion rings (half of a small size)

This is in a good location. It's right next to the East Los Angeles Community College and across the street from other retail shops and restaurants. There is a designated parking lot, but it can get packed during dinner time and late night. The consistent thing about this restaurant is that the portions for anything you order here are always HUGE. My husband and I usually get a small size of one side (onion rings or fries) and we're always full. We also typically will have leftovers. I ordered a Tuna sandwich and split a small side of onion rings with my husband. The sandwich was good. The tomato tasted a little weird so I ended up taking it out. Onion rings were good and crispy. It isn't the best thing I've eaten but it's also not the worst. The restaurant is a little older and the interior/decor reflect that. But the order came out quick and the cashier/cooks were also quick. And the price of the food was very reasonable.

Do you take call in orders for pick up?

They do, but you still have to wait in line to pay in person and they don't start your order until you pay. All you're really doing is saving the time you are at the register.

Is their pastrami beef or pork?

It's beef

Does anyone know what type of bun the hat uses for their pastrami dip sandwiches?

It's a soft white Italian roll, but the sandwich is horrible go somewhere else man.

Which is to say they kinda grill their meat over charcoal, then its kept warm on their flat top. They have several meats you can get, carne asada, buche, tripas, cabeza and, pastor and pollo. I got a carne asada burrito ($7.00) to go and a I tried a handmade tripas taco ($2.50), I thought my tripa taco was kinda good actually, the handmade tortilla was really good had some nice like thicknes and chewiness to it, and it was larger than a regular corn tortilla taco, they spent some time grilling up the tripas till it had some nice color on it and was kinda crispy. The burrito was ok, I thought for $7, they could hook it up more, it was a rather small burrito, I do like the fact that wafter they lay the rice and meat foundation on the tortilla, they hand your the burrito so you can add what you want from their salsa bar, like salsa or pickled onions or cucumber slices, before the guy wraps into a burrito. overall this place was decent, but theres a lot of competition out their for a taco stand in this area and to me it doesnt' really stand out that much. I'd still eat here tho, especially for a hand made taco.

If you're starving, it's recommended you make an order ahead of time in order to skip the wait. The wait can take well over thirty minutes. You order outside by the windows, unless you are ordering their roasted chicken which is ordered inside. You tell the cashier what you would like, you pay and they give you a number which will be called in the next window/s when your order is ready. Once your order number is called, you retrieve it and you can ask for salsas, but not lemon as that is something this Mexican restaurant does not carry. If you are a person that's really into lemon/lime, I recommend you bring your own from home. If you want to be wowed, get 4 asada tacos. Their red salsa is very spicy but delicious. Their green salsa is more mild but delicious as well. I've tried their lengua, it's also good and the pastor. But the star of the show is truly the asada. If you're in the mood for some cravings, get the asada nachos. They are a huge portion, and very tasty. Enjoy!
