My gf lives nearby and has brought this palce up before but we've never gone until a couple weeks ago before a hair appointment that was right across the street. I had originally wanted to try out Ground Up Coffee but saw that this was right next door so we decided to get breakfast here. Got their Sausage Breakfast Burrito and it did not disappoint. It was stuffed to the brim and very flavorful! The salsa verde was thick and delicious with a nice kick of spice. Definitely avoid peak hours because we waited quite a while and there was a line that formed after we ordered. There's a few seats right by the ordering area and a designated but very tight parking lot right behind the spot. We will definitely be back so I can try more of their menu! read more

There aren't many 24-hour spots around anymore, and J & S has been around for a while. It's a Montebello staple, a place where many locals enjoyed late-night eats during their high school years. There's a lot of nostalgia associated with J & S. I found great value here. I ordered the breakfast burrito, and the staff recommended the Sausage and Bacon Breakfast Burrito ($10.64). It was a decent, good-sized burrito. It wasn't the best I've ever had, but it wasn't bad. It's perfect for a quick bite. I recommend grabbing a coffee next door and taking it to go - it's a winning combination. I also tried the Taquito ($3.75). The order comes with two taquitos smothered in avocado sauce. They weren't the best, and tasted a bit dry and not fresh. I set it aside, and it actually tasted better after soaking in the sauce for a few hours. I would skip this next time. It's recommended to order ahead, as they can get busy. I always like to support local, mom-and-pop businesses, especially ones that have been around for a while. They must be doing something right. Overall, the food is a 3.5/5. The decent taste and great price make it an affordable breakfast spot. I heard the machaca burrito is popular, so I'll try that next time. read more

My brother in law introduced me to J&S in 1980. Been going since then. Good flavor and a great bargain back in the day. I went to visit my uncle Xmas Day in MTB. Had a little extra time and I was in the area, so... The usual, fries (crinkle cut and crispy, tasted like taquitos, taquitos ( crispy, little shredded beef and fluorescent colored guacamole) yummy, cheese enchilada ( that enchilada sauce, OMG) and last but not least, green chili burrito ‍. Oh, and an extra large Orange bang to wash it down with. Just like I remember! Talk to a few of the customers and they do the same, one moved to Riverside and one from the valley. Prices are much higher but to be expected. Really, I didn't care what it cost. To enjoy a meal that reminded me of my overly fun teenage years to my adult life, can't ask for more than that. Great spot for late night cravings!! My go to is the Taquito plate with rice and beans or a bean and cheese burrito and a must have is the guacamole fries with cheese!!!! Been going here for years!!! It is a staple for my boyfriend. Brings him nostalgia when he was young. Just wish they would open up the inside eating again!! Service has always been very good!!! read more

First time here, got a combination burrito with green chile. The beef was a little plain but the beans and cheese were really good and the green sauce helped give it more flavor. The service was great and they have seating outside for you to enjoy your food there. Would still come again and try more things and would definitely love to try a burrito with just cheese and beans. read more

Chili was thick and fries had mozzarella cheese on it. Fries were still crispy by the time I got to them. Would have preferred chili to be a little more watery and yellow cheddar cheese would have made it hit the spot. There was a small line, but it moved fast for a Sunday evening. read more

I've had their taquitos from here before. Loved them but went back today and I'm disappointed, they used to put real guacamole on their taquitos but now they just like every other cheap hamburger joint using what I call agua-mole (not real guacamole). And the taquitos seem different also. I think that management has also changed . Guess I'll start looking for another place that makes taquitos right. read more

Discovered this place 18 years ago and made it a go-to for a long time before relocating... and today, still solid. Returning to the area last year, felt like prices have increased dramatically but still reasonable. Standard quality for a small menu but the best item here would be the beans, it was then and it still is now. Something about these beans makes me crave a breakfast burrito. Unsure if it's because I've become accustomed to the flavors over the years but pair the beans, their mole hot sauce and pico salsa for a classic taste like no other. Only knock I'd say here, is that I wish they wouldn't be so tight with their sauce and salsa's! If I spent $60 in burritos, I'd expect a few additional salsa or pico at no cost if I ask. Not the case... 0.25/each and they charge tax on top of that... lol. Taquitos and hard shell tacos are decent here as well. They also serve burgers, hotdogs & blts if you're in the mood. They once had indoor seating but not the case anymore, my guess is Covid closed that area up for good. There's about 6 small tables under the patio where you order if you're looking to enjoy the meal on site. Otherwise the small parking lot behind the building is an option if you're the type to eat on the hood or inside your car. I don't mind the minimal feel... quick eat and roll out or buy it to go. Again, this place is solid for my taste and nostalgia... 3 stars because it won't blow your mind... but it's more than good with me. Again, SOLID place for a quick Mexican fast food meal at any time of day as they're open 24 hours. Remember bet on the beans... def worth the try. read more

Saw this while driving and decided to try it out. They burritos are made to order and there was a line in the morning when I went. I tried the machaca and the deluxe burritos. The machaca was good it had refried beans inside but the deluxe was the way to go. Had bacon, ham, cheese, egg and some beans. Definitely recommend the deluxe. read more

12/20/2024 J & S 887 N Garfield Ave Montebello, CA 90640 I went there to try the Chili Dog to compare with others in this area. It's a Mexican fast food mainly take out place located close to the freeway. There is some parking in the back. There is stainless steel bench seating in the front with no interior dining (being used for storage). The menu is on the board above the order window. I placed my order and paid for a Chili Dog with onions at the window then waited a short time for my ticket number to get called. The order taker was very friendly and cheerful. The Chili was flavorful and surprisingly not spicy at all. The dog was of the supermarket taste variety and okay, can't beat a Costco dog. If I put their Chili on a Costco dog, then that would be perfection. Value was pretty good and I would repeat. read more

Had the delicious beef taquitos, super crunchy and tasty. The mole salsa is the best, such an amazing salsa option that goes perfectly well with the guac and taquitos. They have a few tables at the front of the building, they didn't have somebody actively cleaning so we had to ask the cashier for a cloth to clean. What happened to J&S. Been coming to this place for decades and never dissapointed. Today I ordered an breakfast burrito, which has been one of their specialties. I asked for easy potatoes but that wasn't the case. The beans were dry and tasted like they came from a can. There were no eggs in my first few bites and thought maybe as i kepted eating I would eventually find them. After several bites, no eggs, so I decided to open the burrito and all I found was bits and pieces of egg and lots of potatoes. How do you screw up a breakfast burrito. They really taste terrible, they have a sign over the window where you order that's states no refunds and that they will remake your order if you are unhappy but no money back! Seems like that should have been my first warning! This once golden spot has turned into a complete disaster. Stay away! I have been coming here for 25 years. Up until today, nothing had changed and for was always excellent. Today, IMHO, almost everything seems to have changed. The rumors of J&S changing hands are apparently true. A few things are very noticeable. They now take credit cards and Apple Pay. Take out containers have changed from things like the taquitos in a paper tray and wrapped in a paper bag to now being placed in a black plastic hard shell container. Same with my machaca plate. Instead of a round aluminum dish with a round top, it now comes in another hard shell container with the rice, beans, and machaca in their own place. But the most telling thing was the quality of the food. With the first bite, you could tell things were not the same. The taquitos were dry and had less meat. Every item on the machaca plate was just tasteless. The machaca was dry, the refried beans were basically a paste, and the rice was...uninspired. I have been a huge fan and I will probably return to try their all meat burrito (my usual order). I guess we all change, but I never expected it would ever happen to J&S. read more

I grew up very close to J & S, so this is a nostalgic spot. Haven't been here in years, but enjoy coming back. The taquitos are crunchy, has good amount of shredded beef, and generous guacamole type sauce. I don't think it's 100% avocado, but it sure tastes great on this dish. The beef enchilada had deep flavorful sauce, cheese was melty and tasty corn tortilla. The prices are very good, it's a better deal than most fast food. read more

This place really surprise me. I have lived in this area for over 30 years and I have always seen this little hamburger place and wondered if it's been open this long it has to be good so I finally came in and tried it out. I got their double cheeseburger combo. Let me tell you it was great. Now this is a burger that reminds me of something that's home-cooked, I don't mean that in a bad way because my family gets down in the kitchen and I've had plenty of burgers that are better than Mostbrick and motors. They got the recipe right, they did not mess up where they didn't need to and they shine where they needed to. I would most definitely come back here to have their burgers, just know that seating is limited. They do offer outdoor seating but inside is relatively small . And the people there were amazing. I called in an order for pickup and was quoted 15 minutes. I left my house 15 minutes after calling in my order. When I paid for my food I said it was a phoned in order for pickup, but was not told my food was ready. I stood around waiting for about 30 more minutes while other people who walked up and ordered after me got their orders before me. When I walked up to the window to check on my order, the woman at the window said my order had been ready. I said you didn't tell me it was ready or call my name. She stated she was calling me for 5 minutes which I will say is not true at all, because everyone she called was a number and all orders were picked up. I said my food has been sitting and I wasn't told it was ready when I paid. The woman had no cares and only repeated that she did call me. When I got home, my food was cold and was made incorrectly. Service was rude, not consistent and food was not prepared how ordered. I will not return. read more
