So I'm cravin a Chicago style hot diggity and decided to go to The Hat in Wicker Park (corner of North and Ashland). I walk in, BOOM. I lock eyes with a Kool-Aid machine. Could this be love?? It must be so. As I'm sweating like a Russian gangster, I then encounter the sexiest cashier Greece/Mexico has ever produced. This beef cake is a man of twisted steal and sex appeal. We're talkin TATS, dough eyes, gorgeous smile , and Jesus's abs...I'm assuming. No shave November is lookin all kinds of good on this hot dog flippin stud muffin. He is HOT! I guess at The Hat you really can have it all. I ordered a chocolate shake that tasted like Christmas and two chi town style dogs. A dog so nice you gots ta eat it twice! They let you choose how well your burger is done, I chose medium well. Let me tell you, this meat is so flavorful, and the buns are toasted. Service is quick and neat. Parking is right across the street behind Hollywood grill, but we easily found close street parking too. I met my mom here for lunch. I've been working all night and I'm starving. I ordered the chicken club, however I tweaked it to sub the bun out for a pita. I also ordered onion rings for my Mom and a side of fries. Five minutes after I sat with the food, it was cold due to the overhead fans. As for the taste, it was not worth the $17 I paid. I figured that, one of these days, I'd finally check out the Hat. It's at an intersection that I tend to frequent when waiting for buses or cabs, and it seemed like a reasonable option to the Hollywood Grill across the street if I wanted a change of pace. I wasn't disappointed. The Hat is a clean fast-food sort of place. Don't expect much ambience, but that's really no what this place is all about. The fries (frozen, not fresh) are made well and plentiful. The Italian beef was solid if unexceptional, and everything else on the menu that others ordered looked very good as well. I was also impressed that they carry two genuine Chicago obscurities: the Mother-in-Law and the Big Baby (look them up). I would definitely go back here for a quick meal any time. I've witness some lady that works across the street at MB bank give the cashier the hardest time because when she kept swiping her card it would ask for her pin!!!! My trips have been limited to late night dining. Which in the last so many months have been plentiful unfortunately. (Ya know, because late night eating isn't great for the belly. Just means a ton more cardio for the following day.) Anyway you don't care about cardio right? You're here wondering is it any good? I think it's pretty damn good for any hour. The Hat serves Chicago street food. Think about any Chicago char restaurant around the city and what most of their food staples are: Gyros, Italian beef, rib tips, double cheeseburgers, Italian sausage, Buffalo chicken sandwich, etc. They carry all of that and a few more. In my experience the food has always been top quality except for their gyros. Per other reviews the common comment is that the "gyros are salty". The meat of the gyros IS too salty, so salty that the tzatziki sauce is unable to counter it. Halfway through I wanted to throw it out! But.. it's food I paid for. If only I dined in, I could have said something. (If management is reading, you gotta do something about that salty meat. I would guess this is not straight lamb meat and could be a mixture of pork and lamb. If they keep this gyros meat, they might like to try offering Turkish tzatziki sauce. Which has a bit of mint in it and causes it to have a slightly sweetened flavor that could help balance flavors.) My favorites are few, they're good so I keep eating 'em over and over. The fried fish sandwich is a standard kind of good, the garden salad is always decent and their pizza puff is better than the crap sold at run-of-the-mill shacks. The gyros as mentioned above is salty as fuck. The chocolate milkshake is passable and would get you home. If adding it to any meal combo it's an up-charge of $2 dollars. But watch your receipts, even with an electronic POS system I've had an associate overcharge me by five dollars. Luckily she caught her error and fixed my total. Back to the food; the rib tips are decent and pretty meaty. One could find the quality quite surprising, however the sauce was forgettable. I'd bet their rib tips would top much of what could be found in this hood with the exception of Boulevard Sports lounge. Boulevard recently started smoking meats and is worthy of tasting. I'm not a fan of the name of this place. Without seeing their menu or signage one wouldn't make the connection of a "Chef's hat". To me, "the hat" sounds like an underground jazz club. read more

Yep I like this place. The portions are big and cheap. The best part is they are delish. Stopped in here a few days ago because it's close to my kids school and they were hungry after violin lessons. I like how super clean the place feels. The bathrooms are huge and super clean. I don't know if that is important to anyone else, but I have three kids that always seem to need to use the bathroom. Made my second visit to The Hat this week; while the hot dog/gyro/fries offerings I have tried have been average-to-below-average, all of this spirited away each time I had one of the excellent milkshakes. And, for $3.03, you can get a small that is the same size as your standard Potbelly shake and you get the same amount of quality. Very well spun, very flavorful, and made fast. At least the food matches the service. The lady behind the counter was the complete opposite of charming, whatever that is. The greetings they give are pretty laughable. It feels like going in and ordering from a chain gang. Wait I take that back, at least the chain gangs had emotion in their job. Cooks seemed to be fine. On to the food. Steamed hot dogs with the neon green relish. So the relish I can get over, but the dogs (like mentioned in a previous review) were rubbery and not even the correct color. The Italian garlic beef was edible, and the fries were the saving grace. Good job on the fries. Oh, I forgot about the tea from the pop machine. Off day? Maybe. But it had to be disposed of. 9/22/15- Stopped here for a quick bite on the way to o'hare for my return flight home to Florida. It was a great choice for an early lunch. My friends recommended the grilled chicken sandwich and I have to say it was pretty great. The chicken is well seasoned, hot, and juicy, veggies were fresh and crisp. I had to splurge and get the loaded crinkle cut fries. They are definitely loaded with plenty of delicious nacho cheese, bacon, and sour cream for days. The guys got crinkle cut fries with their sandwiches as well and I had enough of the loaded bit of my fries to share with all of their fries. It was all pretty inexpensive compared to everywhere else we have been eating in Chicago. It's a very simple, low key, diner style restaurant. Nothing fancy but they do the job very well. After a long weekend, I came here on a Sunday for lunch looking to get some grease in my system and unlimited refills on red Kool-Aid. Had my heart set on a Italian beef meal before walking in but I changed my mind because the Gyros meal was 50 cents cheaper. Best decision ever because it was fully loaded and they didn't skimp on the tzatziki sauce! It prolly took me a good 5 minutes of eating the lamb before I was able to close it like a sandwich. Long story short, come here if you are wanting a boatload of food, crinkle cut fries, and of course the bottomless red Kool-Aid. PS, try the pork chop sandwich as well if you are a fan of Maxwell's, this is a nice local substitution for a bone in pork chop sandwich. This is perhaps one of the least desireable hot dog/burger places in the city of Chicago and Chicagoland for that matter. I used to work for a company that manufactured gyros, pita, tzatziki, and hummus and got to know the places where we sold the product. The Hat, when arriving with my friends for dinner was one of those places. I hadn't had a gyros in a long time and ordered it. The meat was sliced terribly thin, almost paper thin, which was disappointing. They also skimped on the meat and gave very little tzatziki sauce. Cutting the meat that thin tells me management is cheap and is looking to make as much margin as possible. Every other place I go for gyro, serves nice thick slices. The service isnt something to brag about either. I had to repeat my order to the cashier multiple times, as she was too busy having a conversation with another coworker while she was trying to ring me up. You couldn't pay me to go back here.
