I was blown away by the cinnamon-cardamom and coriander-lemon--such bold, unexpected combos. Honestly, I could hear my inner scream of joy with every bite!

They don't allow…read moresamples as others have mentioned, which really hampers my willingness to try their very creative flavors. It's a cop out to talk about sampling spoons as waste when I've seen other ice cream shops find solutions to that, it's really just greed. They know they'll sell ice cream regardless so they'll cut that corner. Maybe lines are a little longer, but as a local, it makes me not want to come back all year long. Also, the base recipe they seem to use is VERY thick and rich, to the point where it's arguably too much and takes away from the flavors. I've had some good bites here too so it's not a dud altogether. I'll say I'm partial to higher end ice cream (which I feel MDI falls into), and will pay a premium happily for a great product, but I haven't been back in a while because it's hit or miss if I'll enjoy my ice cream since they don't offer samples. I've also not craved any of the 5 or so flavors I've tried in order to return for them. There's great potential there, and I am opening to trying it again if they decide to prioritize local customers over the summer tourists.

I'm surprised I have not written a review for Annabelle's before as it is our favorite ice cream…read morespot in Portsmouth. There is usually a bit of a line, but we find it moves fast. The staff are always pleasant and serve up your order quickly. At some times they will make a window service line available as well. The shop has a great variety of flavors, and rotates a few seasonal options through. My favorite is Coconut during the summer. In the past it has been a bit of a unicorn flavor here, but this summer I've found it on my past 3 visits! My second choice is the Peanut Butter Fantasy. Prices seem to be on par for premium ice cream. They do accept credit cards as well. There are a few tables inside the shop if you care to sit and enjoy your ice cream inside. Restrooms are also available.

Lots of ice cream options to choose from but I liked that they also have seasonal flavors and so I chose one from that list which was the Graham Central Station and of course the NH Pure Maple Nut. Both were delicious! Inside was a bit old fashioned and dark though so I appreciate the few outdoor seats that they have - Especially since my ice cream started dripping. Location wise, it was a bit busy in Ceres street that day especially since it's close to Moran Towing, restaurants and shops, etc so sometimes it could get a bit crowded and well..not the cleanest looking. Not their fault of course.

You scream. I…read morescream. We all scream... for site made ice cream on a working Maine dairy farm ! This is a special place... a farm on a hill with their own farm shop featuring glass-bottled milk, sandwiches, and most importantly... Ice Cream ! Starting mid-April or so, they open up "The Barnyard" which is a nice little petting zoo for the kids... and occasionally a "Goat Yoga" spot for adults... which is just so uniquely crazy it almost makes me wish I did yoga. Not into yoga...? I get you. Lucky for us, they also have a hardware store / lumber yard, so you could feasibly come for Mocha Chip and stay for the 4x4 milled posts, and that's not an experience you'll soon get at a national big-box lumber store. Or a Baskin Robbins, for that matter. This place is an experience. The farm is gorgeous, the staff are friendly, the animals are fun, the lumber yard is definitely there, and the product... well that's where it's at... it's excellent. There are a few working dairy farms like this one dotted around the state, and I encourage you to check out each and every one. Smiling Hill Farm is that extra special sort of place, where it's only a few miles drive outside of Portland, but it feels worlds away and it's so, so worth the effort to get to. They also have ready-to-go quarts in the freezer, their various dairy offerings, and rotating, seasonal farm shop fare. Support your local farmers! Also... I've found the local barn cats to be super friendly and just a treat to hang with. YMMV
