I had a great experience here when I recently adopted a kitten from Sean Casey Animal Rescue. The staff was very personable and helpful, and seemed genuinely committed to what they were doing. I have heard that trying to adopt a cat in NYC can sometimes be a trying, time consuming and overall unpleasant experience, but my experience here was the total opposite. I spoke to someone nice on the phone to get details about the cats they had, and they offered to hold a female kitten who sounded perfect until I was able to come in. Well, perfect she was and in less than an hour they had all my paperwork processed, called my references, approved my application, went over her medical records with me, and recommended a great food from their pet store to me. Not to mention that she is the sweetest little lovebug anyone could imagine and has been a total joy- used the litterbox from day one, gets along with my dog, only scratches her scratching post, I could go on for days! While in the store I also took a peek at all the exotic animals they had- I can honestly say I never thought I would see a tortoise the size of a dog just freely roaming around a pet store in Brooklyn! They also had snakes, iguanas, lizards, guinea pigs, hamsters, and parakeets (due to legalities regarding the keeping of exotics in city limits, certain types of animals are only available with proof of address outside of NYC). They are the only place that I've come across in NYC that offers its (excellent) rescue services to these cast off exotic animals and it's wonderful to see a place committed to helping every homeless animal that needs help- not just the ones that are cute and fluffy and easy to find homes for. This place is fantastic! Great array of supplies and pet foods for all kinds of pets. Pretty remarkable for such a tiny place. And i love that they adopt out animals in need of homes. This pet supply/rescue is the best thing that's ever happened to this neighborhood. It would be great if Paul S. took the time to actually see what happens there everyday because he is very misinformed. The staff is one of the most hard working, helpful and knowledgeable group of people around and they're lead by Sean. Sean works 7 days a week, 12-14 hr days to make the rescue and pet supply successful. And successful they are... the average turnaround of the rescue is exceptional and the store although small carries a good variety of foods and supplies. I'm not sure what school Paul S attended but many schools require volunteer time. Many kids volunteer to socialize the animals, walk them or clean up after them purely because they love animals but others do it for the credit, its great for both parties. As for the $200 fee, there's actually a great reason to pay it. Once with the rescue, those animals get great medical care. A spay/neuter, a microchip, vaccinations, a free vet exam fee and a month of free health insurance is included with that fee. Not to mention that Sean goes out of his way to take the special medical cases; like the animals that have been hit by cars and need to have a leg amputated, the pneumonia cases, the mange cases, the dog fighting cases- medical for all of those animals is taken care of - but the adopter still only pays $200. I'd give it more stars if I could. I have spent a lot of time there walking dogs and "socializing" cats and kittens as a volunteer (something they let me do randomly - as opposed to other places that want a very specific time commitment). Sean takes in animals that many places would not - aside from the snakes and turtles, etc., many of the animals there come in sick, injured and/or abused. Their staff takes great care to get them adopted - sticking with the "hard luck" cases for months and months. I've seen 3 legged animals, animals with missing eyes, etc. all treated with love and kindness for as long as it takes for them to find a new home. Sean is there all the time and I have watched him work with customers, volunteers and animals and am amazed that he never loses his patience or temper even with people and situations which would make another person do so. If you're thinking of adopting an animal, go check them out. If you have a few spare dollars, send them their way. read more

We love shopping here for several reasons. First, if we want something they don't already carry, we ask; they will order the product and almost always sell it at a competitive price. Second, everything we buy here helps support the Sean Casey Animal Rescue, one of the most effective and active animal rescue organizations in the city. Third, every time you go, there are animals around waiting for adoption who are more than willing to accept any spare affection you have! Dogs, cats, rabbits, birds, snakes, lizards, rats--you name it, SCAR's had it. Fourth, they are incredibly friendly, kind, giving people who have brought a wonderful organization to our neighborhood; so many local high school and middle school kids do community service here, it's heartwarming to watch. Finally, this is where we adopted one of our cats (when he was just a wee thing). Everyone here knows us from the neighborhood, so there were no hassles in our adoption. In fact, since we were always on the lookout for "the right one", when I saw our little guy one afternoon and asked Sean to hold him, he knew I was serious right away. Great place! We buy all of our cat food and litter here. It's super convenient, the prices are very reasonable, and we love knowing that our purchases help to support the animal rescue operation. The staff is unbelievably hard-working. Would someone at Petco spend 10 minutes helping you find the perfect cat food for Miss Finicky and Mr. Barfer? They're also great about ordering things that they do not have in stock. Also, I'd like to give a special shout out to the blond woman who often works at the register. I don't know her name. At Sean's shelter, every animal gets excellent, loving care from Sean and his dedicated staff plus all the medical attention it needs. Sean takes in animals that have been abandoned to the streets, injured by cars, mistreated or neglected by their owners, or whose owners have passed away. Sean is a kind and humane person whose mission in life is to ease misery for unfortunate animals and find loving homes for them. His success rate is phenomenal. I've seen dogs that come to the shelter afraid and cowering at the sight of people, and Sean and his staff turn them into unafraid and affectionate animals, ready and eager for human companionship. I'm impressed by the generous nature of the young people who are at the shelter in all kinds of weather to walk dogs, hold cats and kittens on their laps, talk to the birds, and shower the animals with affection. Taking responsibility for another living creature's well-being is an important life lesson. When Sean isn't at the shelter, he's at the vet's office or at an adoption event. Sometimes he runs across the street to buy a slice of pizza to wolf down. If he stands on the sidewalk in front of the shelter for a few minutes, he deserves that little break - although he's probably talking to someone about animal care! read more

I'm very happy to support Sean Casey's wonderful work by purchasing all my upscale cat food and litter at Hamilton Dog House for my spoiled baby cat (who I adopted from Sean Casey's Animal Rescue two years ago). I also love to visit with all the kittens and puppies and bunnies and step over the tortoises to get to them! What heaven to see kittens whenever I want. This pet supply store is right next door to the animal shelter, and it's run by all the same people. Most customers don't even realize they are technically two separate businesses (I think the pet supply store is for profit, and the shelter is not). Being completely honest, this is no better or worse than your average pet supply store (in terms of prices and selection). But it's always fun to come here just pass by the animal shelter, there's always something interesting there. And I feel like I'm doing a good deed to support to the same people who run the shelter. read more

Anyone looking for a furry friend should definitely stop here. A small neighborhood shelter that has a variety of animals for adoption. Whenever we visit we see a lot of neighborhood kids and senior citizens walking or taking care of the animals. The proceeds from the pet store go toward the care and support of the animals. We adopted both of our dogs from Sean. Both had issues. Sean was not afraid to pull out dogs that may not have been perfect for adoption. I think Sean Casey dhould be shut down!!! I had the worst experience I adopted a rottweiller who I had called about numerous times was told she was in good health great animal made an appointment to see her she was adorable but as Sean put it was a little sick thought she had kennel cough gave me antibiotics to finish and said she would be fine well took her home was aggressive with her food, so had a behavorist look at her also a vet well that is where the drama begins after numerous vet visits I was told this dog was very sick after research found she has a history which Sean Casey knew about and did nothing but sold her for $260.00 which is money to him but heartbreak for me. Now I am left with thousands in vet bills and told to put the dog down which has broke my heart I told Sean Casey that I had lost a rotti previously and that this one look just like her he just lied and scooted her right out the door. When I called him back his response was I knew the condition of the dog when I took her BS KENNEL COUGH AND BULARS (AIR SACS) IN LUNGS IS TWO DIFFERENT THINGS SEAN. But your good old contract relieves you of all and any responsibility if you donot live in nyc and even if you do check all of his anmials out he says bring the animal back and on top ofd that said at frst it would be a charge to bring back, then just said bring her back. No Sean I think this poor dog has been put through enough by you. Sean there are people who actually care and love their pets they become part of the family I hoped the $260 was worth it for the pain and agony you put my family through I think your a bastard and as for the dog I will see if meds can manage this condition without further suffering if not then i will have to put her down which is the way it is looking. read more
