The store smells very bad and is not clean. The litter and food for the resident cat is in the rear and that area is very dirty.

DO NOT GO HERE. You will be treated like absolute garbage. I went in there today during my lunch break to buy some dog food. First off the prices are triple the price than online stores like chewy but I needed dog food in a pinch. I picked up three cans of dog food and then proceeded to try to pay with my card. The owner/worker said "you can't use your card 20 dollar minimum, you can use the ATM" I said no thank you I'll come back tomorrow (because I had cash at home). Then in an EXTREMELY rude and disrespectful tone he said "then go put back your dog food it's not my job to put it back". I was absolutely mind blown. First off, 20 minimum is absolutely absurd and greediness will get this man NO WHERE. Second, I would have probably involuntary went to go put the dog food back if the guy wasn't being so MEAN Seriously will never step foot in here again. Bought primal food from here. I had to throw it out. I checked the date as I was was walking away from the store, and it said the best buy date was 5/20/22. It's 10/08/23. I got my refund as soon as I walked in, but he insisted that it was fine. The problem is that it's frozen raw food. I threw it out, obviously. Ridiculously overpriced. I went to buy a box of dog treats - basic generic stuff. $9/box. Then I went to the bodega, where the same thing was $5.80. I'm sure in the supermarket it would be around $4. I try to support local businesses, but when your prices are much higher than the bodega (where I expect to pay more for sheer convenience), you're marking things up way too much. The lack of respect this store has for customers is unbelievable. I have never actually seen the store open, (I work nearby and it is closed on my way to work and closed on my way home) but by chance yesterday it was open. Lights were on and there were people in the store. I stepped in to check the price on new dog food my vet suggested for my dog. As I stepped into the store, the other people in the store stepped out. I was just looking at the dog food on the shelves and checking the prices when a man came in and asked who I was, and I replied that I was just a customer and wanted to see how much something cost. He proceeded to tell me that the store was not open yet, that the store opened at 9:00am and that I needed to come back when it was open. I responded to him stating that the door was open, the lights were on, and that there were other people in the store moments prior and I did not realize it was closed that I would try to come back. The man then continued to shout at me that the store was closed and there is a sign in the widow that says we open at 9:00am he questioned if I knew how to read and could see that the store was not open yet. He forced me out of the store to the door and pointed to the sign and continued to shout that they opened at 9:00am. So I told him that if they were not open his door should have been shut, and that he was extremely rude and I would not be back to make a purchase. He didn't care at all. All he kept saying was read the sign, were not open. Keeping up behavior like this will not bring in customers, also if your closed, keep the door closed! read more

Our dog demands that we go here because he loves the owner, who's always super nice to both of us. My kid was born on the same week as his grandkid, so we always check in. We've been coming here for years, and Leo's been getting free treats for years. They have the good brand of dog food we want, and also nonscented doggie bags (those perfumed ones are gross) and they've never let us down. And seriously, Leo gets so fired up when we get on that block that if I know it's too early for the store to be open I have to take him on a different route so I don't crush his little heart. read more

Almost everything in this store is overpriced by couple of dollars compared to other places in the area. I avoid this place because it doesn't carry my dog's brand of dog food and treats are pricier here, leashes and bully sticks too. There are a lot of pet supply stores in the area, but this one has the best selection of food (at least for cats - but dogs as well) in my opinion. The proprietor is wonderful and friendly - and always remembers us when we come in. Prices are on par with everything else in the Park Slope area. We use a specialized cat litter and this is one of the few places that always has it in stock. Our cats are picky eaters, and stick to only 1 or 2 brands - and they carry the biggest selection. Also a big selection of treats (Greenies), which at other stores I usually only see 1 or 2 options. Highly recommend! read more

The owner here has always been very kind and friendly to me. His small shop is stocked full of such a selection that I don't have to go anywhere else. A few weeks ago I bought a set of protective booties for my pup's feet but they were the wrong size. The owner switched them out next day, no problem! Similar to what others have said here, this place is okay. It's clean and the owner definitely seems nice. But items here are quite a lot more expensive than most other pet stores. ABC is good in a pinch - like if you're in the nabe and just need something small. Just be prepared to shell out $2-7+ more for those particular items. read more

I stopped in this weekend to pick up some dog food. While I was waiting to pay. The owner kept throwing dog treats at my pets. I thanked him, but explained that he had given them plenty and asked him to stop because they would get an upset stomach. While I bent down to pick up some of the treats the owner ran my credit card. I realized the two 5 lbs bags of food came to over 35 dollars. (a 17.5 lbs of food typically cost 29.99 elsewhere). I was horrified and told him I would like to only get one bag instead of two. He said he doesn't do returns. I explained that I had not even signed the credit card slip and asked again to return one bag or to get a store credit for one. He again explained that he would not return one. He told me "it was too late" and his policy was firm. Overpriced and just rude! read more

Pretty sure this place must get by on people who either haven't discovered the internet or are totally OK with paying crazy markups. Wanting to support a local business I ordered some specialty kitten food that I knew I could get online for about $16. I just picked up my order from ABC pets... FOR $26!! I told the owner that I could buy this online for $10 less but had wanted to support a local business, unfortunately all the other reviews are correct. He didn't offer to bring down the price to keep a customer and told me to go online instead. So that is exactly what I will do. read more

OK I expect to pay more for items at a local place then a chain but I don't appreciate deceptive business practices. The other week a sign outside stated that fancy feast 3oz cans were on sale for 79 cents. I bought several cans and cat litter and when I paid it seemed it was about a half dollar more than I thought. I got no receipt. I figured the owner charged the non sale price by mistake. When I returned this week I bought only 6 cans. Before I paid I asked the price (the cans are not price labeled). The owner said 89 cents. I said there is sign outside that says they are 79. He said that was an old sign from last week. I replied, "But I paid 89 cents last week too." Need I say more. He then said he was going to change the sign. I went by today. I don't get all the negative reviews! I have shopped here a number of times when visiting family in Brooklyn. Today I arrived at 8:55, 5 mins before their posted opening time. The store was open. The gentleman tending the store was extremely helpful. I had my needed dog food and was out the door by 9:00. It was a great experience. Only thing that needs to change is the $20 minimum on credit cards. In this day and age I rarely carry much cash. I would have preferred to charge my $16.22 purchase. read more

Not my usual store but found myself there and decided to pick up a couple of bully sticks and paid with a CC. I found that the cashier had added $10 to the total. I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt that he just punched it in wrong but the whole thing is pretty dubious. He wasn't the least bit contrite about it, either. I was a regular customer. Store a little pricey but I thought merchant was nice enough man. Recently had bad experience with moldy dog food. He would not take back. Told me to call the company that made the dog food. I did. They are sending me coupon but they also mentioned that merchant should have taken and dealt with the returns, etc. they will contact the merchant. I used to enjoy speaking with Chris, the owner, and spending my money at this store because it's the closest to my home & I like to support local businesses. Unfortunately, they keep a cat locked up inside the basement with zero access to sunlight and human companionship. Over long holiday weekends, the cat does not have enough food or water. The poor thing's howls go ignored constantly. They also acquire kittens to attract customers and then toss them outside with they get older -- without spaying or neutering them. This has caused a feral cat problem in the neighborhood. I tried to speak with the workers regarding this issue but they are downright nasty. I cannot get in touch with Chris to discuss the matter but since he lied to my face about the last kitten being spayed (it most definitely was not) I've decided that he does not care about animals at all. Great neighborhood pet store. They have pretty much whatever you need and if not, the owner will order it for you immediately. He did it for us on several occasions and even helped my wife carry a large bag a dog food to her car. A few years back, he was nice enough to post fliers of a dog we wanted to re-home. Prices are pretty good for a small store too. A bit more expensive than Petco on some things, but for the extra change, its nice to support a local business. I have returned numerous things there, often without a receipt and he was beyond accommodating. I saw below that a reviewer blamed him for administering the wrong remedy. Mistakes happen and its possible he grabbed the wrong product. If it were me, I would make sure to check a few times, especially once I got home to make sure I was giving my pet the right product. But I guess if blaming someone else for their oversight makes them feel better about almost killing their pet...to each their own. They will always have my business! read more

For example, he charges literally double or more for cat litter than other stores and refuses to accept a debit/credit card for anything less than $20. He was also a prick about it after I waited over 5 minutes for help. I can't imagine anyone that is smart ever returning here. I went here today in need of dog food and as I approached the counter to pay, I was told they did not have a credit card machine. I left because I didn't have any cash, but decided I didn't have time to search for another pet store. I went back into the store, took cash out of their ATM (while paying the withdraw fee) and got back into line, To my surprise, the woman in front of me paid with her credit card! I had the same experience with my credit card. My wife and I patronize this store from time to time because its location is very convenient, although it is over-priced. Today, my purchases added up to $16.50 or so and the owner tells me he won't accept a credit card for purchases under $20. This must be a new policy, because I'm almost positive I've paid with a credit card in the past for purchases under $20. Instead of being honest with me and informing me that this is a new policy (he does have the legal right to reject payment via a credit card) he lies to me and tells me that the charge won't go through for this amount, which is a load of crap. They have a location in Fort Greene. Horrible. High prices and the worst ducking customer service I've ever seen! I've sent into this location twice. The first time I went looking for a collar for my cat. They had them all behind the counter. When I asked that prick can I see them, he got an attitude and treat men as if I was going to snatch it out of his hand! I was disgusted I felt it down in my soul! So I vowed to never go back. Then at a last minute i needed cat litter and of course they are right by me. So trying to be rational in my thinking, I figured as people we are allowed to have a bad day. So I went back in. I ask the same asshole that o encountered the first time that I needed cat litter. Of course he snapped telling me where it was. I went back there to see that it was 20% more than the average. I was immediately turned off and walked out. I thought when leaving what is his problem?! Then I quickly remembered, I'm black! Damn shame. The next time I see him standing outside I'd be sure to take a picture and put it up exposing him. This is the day and age we live in.
