Barbara (the owner) is more knowledgeable than anyone I know about every kind of food and treat known to mankind. She has freeze dried fish for cats and she can even tell you all about the different species of fish they dried! Not sure what food to get your dog? Tell her the breed and she can narrow your choices down. The store is jam packed with every kind of product you might want and has a friendly, communal vibe. Barbara runs the store herself so call ahead to check her hours. You won't regret stopping in even if it's just to say hello. read more

Expired food, terrible customer service. If for some reason you decide to patronize this place, please check the expiration dates of everything you pick up. It's kind of a mad house in here and a scavenger hunt to find what you need. Ownership wasn't as friendly as all the other reviews claim and actually is the reason we left. Just weird and zero guest-facing skills. Really ruined our day. Will not be back. read more

Animal Fare is a great store with everything you need for your pet. Barbara is amazing as she goes out of her way to help. Highly recommend

Thanks Barbara at Animal Fare for always giving us the best and friendliest critter store in Windsor Terrace and all of Bklyn. Great positive energy for humans too! read more

Animal Fare - Thanks Barbara for giving us critters and our humans always one of the kindest places in Bklyn - Pet Stores Near Me - Brooklyn, New York

Barbara is truly a gem of the neighborhood. Definitely support her! She is kind, helpful, and truly cares about animals and not just profit.

I love this store and the people in it! So grateful to have it in the community -- there are so few great stores like this around

Hands down the best animal companion goods store I've ever been to. Great selection of high quality items that are hard to find elsewhere. If you're interested in healthy nutrition and eco-friendly pet care products, this is the place to go. The owner of this business is also the best part of the place. She is so incredibly kind and charismatic. A stop in to Animal Fare will be sure to brighten your day. So grateful to live near this shop! read more

Love it. This is neighborhood pet store. And like many spots it's more about the people running it and less about other elements. Sure, it's a bit tight but they have the litter and food that my cat overlord desires as well as her favorite cat grass. We adore the owner. She's the best. read more

Animal Fare is a one of a kind place for pets and their owners Barbara is not only dedicated to the health and well being of your pet she is also is a font of knowledge about pet health. She always has a great story to tell and you will come away with an experience and good health for your pet. Forget Chewy and come to a real store with toys galore! ‍ read more

They have the best no-waste bird food (so the birds don't leave shells all over the sidewalk underneath). Birds go crazy for it and we get such pretty varieties outside our window wherever hangout. Keeps our cat entertained all day. read more

If you needed a reminder of why shopping local is better than shopping online - Barbara is that. She is knowledgeable, kind, and funny!!!!! Wonderful, charming store. read more

Been shopping here for my cats for years. Everything you could possibly want for your cat, dog, bird and small mammal packed into a small space. Probably stuff for other critters, too. Barbara, the owner, loves each and every pet and is knowledgeable, and she'll order anything you need that's not in the store. Great neighborhood business. read more

Animal fare has been our to go to pet store for years. Barbara carries high quality food and everything you need for your pet. Once, she dropped a bag of dog food at the next door deli for me to pick up after hours. Needless to say that she always has treats for our dog. read more

So grateful to have this shop in the neighborhood. Barbara is lovely and always has something to make our dog happy when we take her there.

This little neighborhood pet shop is bursting at its seams, with healthy pet food, treats, a variety of adorable toys, and pet health products stacked from floor to ceiling and filling every nook and cranny. The owners are also very friendly and conversant. read more

I have perused a great many pet food shops in the Park Slope and Prospect Heights areas, and I have to say there has never been a more visceral experience than to enter the doors of 153 Prospect Park Southwest. This shangri-la is Animal Fare - where there is never any dissapointments or empty shelves. They have top drawer brand food and are Brooklyn prices for a Brooklyn store, not the Manhattan prices, some Brooklyn stores like to charge. I have to say my experience with Animal Fare was so good it was zenful - I would give more than 5 stars, if only I could...so..are you going to Animal Fare, its on the way to Scarborough Fair and if you ask me Iams, Iams. I'm going to join the throng of satisfied customers and toss them a 5 star rating. When I first visited Animal Fare I didn't buy anything, I understand that space gets away from you after years in the pet business but this place is packed to the gills and not really organized in any fashion I've noticed. Also they only carry the 30 lb size of Wellness, the food my big pup needs and carrying that plus 12 cans of wet food for my geriatric chihuahua can be...well...impossible. I have determined it is worth two trips to buy my pet wares here however. The owners are fantastic. Never once have they not showered my dogs in treats and if they aren't with me they give me goodies to take home! They are extremely personable and helpful and provide honest feedback on what they have found to be best for the dog (as opposed to what is most expensive/trendy). Also in terms of value they trump all other local options. Value + Free treats + amazing ownership = happy pups/happy Jaime read more

Marvelous Milo was just tugging away at his leash and acting like he didn't know how to walk on one. At first I thought he was just super anxious, but there was no way it was that since 1) he knows Prospect Park and 2) he gets walked 2-3 times a day. At the dog beach I began seeing other dogs with longer leashes and it dawned on me that I was making my poor dog walk on a short leash. ;( So on our way home we made a quick stop at Animal Fare and one of the nice owners helped us select a leash that made Milo want to walk proudly (and freely). They are always helpful at this store and have stock high quality food like Natural Balance, Science Diet, etc. AND unlike other pet stores who favor dogs, they stock great stuff for our favorite felines Frisky and Giorgio as well. Milo loves the place because the owners always give him treats. So if you don't take my word for it - just ask the doggies. read more

By far the best pet store in Brooklyn.

On a day where my little buddy had a few teeth pulled, I needed to grab a can of wet food to try and convince her to eat it. A tech at my vet suggested I swing by Animal Fare because she'd heard people raving about it. So I packed my still out of it dog in her little carrier and ran down to the store as fast as I could because it was nearing 6pm and I saw the shop closed at 7. As I walked into the store, the woman at the register (I didn't catch her name, but from reading all the other reviews, it may be Barbara?) tells me she has to close early due to a family emergency. I was prepared to turn around and leave because I know how life rolls and couldn't blame her for things out of her control when she asks if I needed one thing. Yes, I did! Just one can of a certain brand of food, please. She ran right over to get it and came back and told me the price. It was there that I realized I didn't have any cash on me and asked if she took cards. She admitted that she just shut down the credit card machine in preparation to close and again I was prepared to leave and maybe buy some baby food at the grocery store for the night and try again tomorrow. But this woman has to be heaven sent because she took my card anyway and told me she can't stand seeing an unhappy puppy. Here she is having her own personal issues and yet she still is concerned about the true four-legged customers of her shop. My dog was more stoned than unhappy, to be perfectly honest, but I totally get the lady's point. After I paid and packed up and walked out the door to wait for a cab home, I saw that she had put up a sign saying she was closed due to the emergency. Yet she still took in two more customers who just showed up maybe one minute too late. The amount of dedication this lady has amazed me and while the shop is a little out of my way, I'm definitely making the trip to go back and take a look at what else they have to offer. read more

Affordable! Great variety! Always something new! Knowledgeable owners, 5 star treatment on pets and customers. High quality products. I'm glad I stopped in. This is my dogs go to pet store from now on. Plus, treats upon arrival! This is why I'm glad local shops still exist. read more

I am giving up the convenience of online shopping and delivery for shopping at Animal Fare - the owner is knowledgeable, the feed and supply selection is fantastic. A visit to AF is good for your pet and your soul. read more

In my opinion, this is the best pet supply store in Brooklyn. I went their with the intention of just buying a training collar for my dog and ended up spending 100+ dollars. Barbara ( the store owner ) is amazing , super friendly , extremely helpful and knowledgeable . Most places try to push things on you in order to the sale bigger. Not her , after being in the store for 5 min I had felt like I had been shopping their for years. So much so that I had to call her to thank her again for being such a great help and really making my first time shopping their a pleasure. The prices are very reasonable and quality of her products are top notch. The service alone is a good enough reason To go their. A+++ Thanks again! - James read more

One of my favourite places on earth. Born and raised in this 'hood and Barbara has been a beloved gem since time immemorial. She genuinely loves animals and it shows. I've tried out quite a few new products from her store.. and always at a reasonable price. It's that mom-and-pop shoppe feel that sadly is becoming but s vestige of New York. Definitely stop by and support this business if you can.. if only to get a free treat with extra doses on love read more

Barbara really is the best. We are so lucky to have Animal Fare in our neighborhood! As a new dog owner (adopted from Sean Casey), she has helped me learn strategies for everything from putting on Mulligan's coat, to feeding him his treats! All of Mulligan's holiday presents will be from Animal Fare, for sure! read more

The owner, who is a doll, will get me Wysong Au Jus with a week's notice. Now, there are other stores who carry this as a staple but they're in Manhattan and since I buy cases and use my car, parking is not an option like it is with Animal Fare. In fact Animal fare is the only pet food store I have found in Brooklyn that will get you Wysong Au Jus. I also like the fact they're right next door to a decently stocked bodega & pizzeria. read more

This store is everything I love about a local neighborhood shop. Great prices, personalized attention, and a great variety of products. Most importantly, Barbara - the woman who owns the store- makes it her business to get to know you and your pets. You can tell she is genuinely an animal lover and she is full of helpful tips and information that you would never get shopping at a large chain pet store. My dog LOVES coming here because she knows a visit to Animal Fare= lots of free treats. Love this place! read more

I just posted the following review under "ACME PET FOOD" in Brooklyn: "I know, i know... everyone's a critic. But I really am upset at what just happened tonight. I have been an ACME Pet Food customer for about a year - until just about a half hour ago. This was when I went in to purchase a bag of cat food. This cat food is normally around $38 When the guy (I believe he is the owner) said $52... I almost lost it! He said the supplier just raised the price. By $12 dollars?!?? I'm sorry, but that is ridiculous. It's a shame too because I really like the store, yes there is a cool, sweet cat who lives there (Knuckles) and I think she might have had babies because I saw a kitten that was orange and striped like her hanging around, too. I love to support "mom and pop" stores, but not when they are obviously price-gouging. That's okay because I went back to my original store, another mom and pop called Animal Fare - their price for the same exact 20 pounder is a much more reasonable (and not price-gouging!) $38 - a whole 14 dollars cheaper than ACME!!!!!!! Sorry ACME, but you just lost a customer due to your greediness." Thank you so much to Animal Fare for being FAIR. I truly appreciate it, and you have saved me so much time and money, I am very grateful. Thank you for being so knowledgeable and informative, and for not price-gouging your customers. I guess that's too much to ask for from others - in this day and age, you get it all. Thanks for everything, your store is lovely xx Keep up the excellent work! read more

This local pet store is the only place where I can find the brand of food I feed my dog. The owner is friendly and SUPER knowledgeable about pet products. She really knows her stuff. read more

This is the epitome of a great local store that's a pleasure to support. The two ladies who run it are wonderful, and their stock is an unbelievable selection, although I can only speak for their dog supplies as a dog owner. The food I buy from them is of high quality, hard to find at many other places (and much better than a corporate chain store) and reasonably priced considering it doesn't cost less than ordering it online. Sometimes the shopkeepers get chatty, so not always ideal to pop in if you're in a hurry, but that's also the beauty of a local neighborhood shop. read more

While there are some minor problems with the place (random closings midweek, occasional hiccups on the phone w/customers when they're trying to fix an order issue), no one beats Barbara and Helen for knowledge and pet support. When you first go in there it's sensory overload, with piles of items all over the place. But if you ask them for something they'll search for it, and once you go in there a few times you generally know where they'll squirrel something away. Then, once they get to know you and what you like? They'll start *saving* stuff for you. More than once I've walked in and Barbara has said "Oh! I saved a flat of Amelia's favorite food! Just wait!" In reference to another poster further down? Actually, yes, it would break them to deliver. They can't afford to not have people in the store, and it's only 4 people running a 12-hr a day, 7 day a week business. Given their lack of resources they do a extraordinary, fantastic job. read more

Really bad manners gave me problems today and I don't know why u guys below me say there great prices 8.00 for tooth paste? 3.00 for a can of food when I can get the same brand for 2.00 at another store I only go here because it's the closest to me they gave me bad service very expensive she said I don't feel good could u calm ur dog down with an attitude first of he's a puppy plus he's a pitbull and on top of that there's 3 dogs in the store so she's not getting my service anymore oh and on top of that she talks to people for an hour at a time ignoring u when u r trying to buy something read more

Went here for the first time today to pick up some basics I was missing for the dog I adopted just last night-- Barbara behind the counter was just so friendly and knowledgeable, I stayed and chatted with her for a while. Not sure how extensive the stock is, but it looks just absolutely packed with all kinds of stuff. I'll be back often! read more

Barbara and Helen are great! They make the most out of their space, and carry quality products. They are very helpful, and if they do not have a product in stock (or the right product for your needs), they will order it for you.
