Then we had our cocktails which were delicious they actually knew what a Cadillac Margarita was. No one in Ohio does. Not sure why.... Half shell is a fun spot with nice bar ambiance and interesting menu, well executed. Staff is attentive and friendly and bar tenders are amazing. Shortcoming, IMO, is failure to accept reservations. They have an efficient check-in system where they text you when your table is ready. The restaurant is located next to a very nice park with amazing Live Oaks, a perfect place to wait for your table. This place came highly recommended by the Inn where we were staying and we were not disappointed. We were quickly given a table and our server was quick to bring drinks. $5 for house wine was a good deal. Service throughout the meal was excellent, which is a plus for me. I had the blue crab cakes, grits and the bacon wrapped green beans. The green beans are to die for and I wish I had ordered double and no grits. The crab cakes were very good, not a lot of filler like we sometimes see. Food was all served hot and in a timely manner. The food was amazing! The ceviche shrimp ( sorry I didn't get a picture, I jumped right in!) we're a delightful change to ordinary oysters. Then on to the shrimp and grits and catch of the day flounder!! Grits were smooth and buttery in texture, shrimp cooked perfectly as well as the super flaky flounder. The reason I couldn't give 5 stars was two fold: kind of close quarters people on both sides very loud and felt crowded even though the place was not crowded. My absolute fav place, I don't want to share, but I must. The oysters, the burgers, the salads, the martinis, the margs. You can not go wrong. The service is impeccable. They leave your cups full, your stomach full of absolutely delicious surf and turf, and your heart full because you'll be right down by the beautiful pier where you can people watch or catch the game. 10/10 Food and service. We sat at the bar with Ashley at about 7pm on a Friday. We lucked out and got the same seats as last year on the same day as last year. They're cranking out oysters in the corner, the bartender is rapidly making drinks for the servers and the Braves were on TV, which is exactly what we wanted! We got the surf & turf special and it was one of the best steaks we've ever had. It was HUGE! She said it was 22oz but it every bit of that, if not more. We had oyster shooters to start and they were James River oysters (which is back home for us) they were delicious. They were shucked well and had no shell pieces in them. We will always go back to visit! Some of these reviews seem like you're expecting a slow, dead restaurant in peak season. I've tried to eat here before the last time I visited St. Simon but the wait was too long. This time, we took an early dinner around 5pm and had no trouble getting in although by 6pm the place was starting to fill up. First, I need to point out that our server was wonderful. He was thoughtful, very attentive, and able to answer all of our food questions with a touch of humor. Very much appreciated. We started with dirty, dry gin martinis and the tuna tacos. I don't know why they called it a taco when it was laying atop a flat fried won ton but it was a tasty bite. I think calling it a tostada would have been more accurate. You should know, though, that if you are trying to look dainty on a date, this is not the app for you. It's a little messy and requires getting your fingers in there to separate things because it's at least a couple of bites. It is, however, a nice light app with a small punch of flavor. My friend ordered the special and I must admit I was a little jealous of her choice. She had the grilled red snapper and it was one beautiful piece of fish. On the side she had cheesy grits (how can you go wrong there?!), and a side of green bean bundles wrapped in brown sugar bacon (oh, my). I had the breaded and fried (note that it was NOT battered) Mahi Mahi with a side of house fries. I had a craving for fish and chips but this didn't quite fit the bill. It was very tasty, though and cooked perfectly, and I was happy to find that they had malt vinegar. I'm sure some of you are thinking that it was sacrilege to violate that poor fish with vinegar. I was too full for dessert and needed to hit the beach to walk of some of the calories, but I will be back to The Half Shell again and next time I will order the special! read more

This restaurant is a must hit for authentic sea food. During our family trip to sea island it was easily one of our favorites! The restaurant is located right on the Main Street in St. Simons. The place is tucked away in a small but charming restaurant that's decked out in shells, boats, fish nets, and ocean decor. It somehow feels warm and charming without being kitschy or over-done. The seafood here is amazing. It's is fresh, creative, and perfectly cooked. But the menu actually had even more depth - we loved the land dishes that we tried just as much. Of course the shrimp, crab cakes, and fish of the day were total knockouts, but we were also surprised with how good the pork chops, steak, and sides were. You really can't go wrong. I also have to mention the dessert here. One word. UNBELIEVABLE. There is actually just one thing on the dessert menu - the butter cake. Putting one dessert item on the menu is bold move, but with a dessert this good it really isn't. The cake is rich, sweet, and moist. Not only did we clean our plates, but we came back the next day after eating at another restaurant just to order some butter cake as take out. It's that good. This place was amazing!!! We've been coming to SSI my whole life and this place has the BEST seafood the island has to offer! Delicious, fast service and friendly waitress! We normally have a large crowd with us when we come to the island so we've never been able to come because the wait would be too long for our party with a bunch of little children. but since it was just my family of four we were able to get in rather quickly. We are spending a few days in St. Simons from Minneapolis. While just walking around and we came upon The Half Shell and stopped in for a drink. That drink lead to another and then to ordering dinner. I had the slightly blackened triple tail catch of the day and my wife had a blue crab sandwich. The triple tail was outstanding and the wrapped bacon green beans were perfect. Our server was fantastic and she always came at the right time. The cozy atmosphere added to the experience. This is a seafood restaurant which I always get but they have a darn good burger. Love their beer battered onion rings and my husband enjoyed the bacon wrapped green beans. Outdoor or inside seating. Definitely worth the hour wait! We started with the Oysters Frederica. These were delicious, loaded with spinach, bacon, Panko, and Asiago cheese. I had the fried Mahi sandwich with sweet chili slaw, and he had the daily special, a crab crusted flounder with bacon wrapped green beans and onion rings. My sandwich was very tender. The tomato was so fresh, and the tartar sauce delicious. I could have lived without the slaw. It tasted like cabbage mixed with a sauce, not really a slaw. This has become our new favorite restaurant on SSI! The food is always incredible, service is great, and if there is a long wait you can walk around town while you wait because they text you when your table is ready. Really wanted to love this place but more of a like...ordered the crab bisque - it was quite salty, as other reviews have stated. Ordered the Caesar salad and crab cake. Crab cake was the best part by far - delicious and crispy with a soft inside. We also tried two appetizers of the day. One was quite awful - a peanut hummus thing with pork rinds. The second was a king crab dip with cream cheese - better. I also had a nice glass of sauv Blanc. All in all, it wasn't a bad meal by any means but sort of a confusing meal...wasn't sure how to order. Worked well for a family of 4 to have a nice casual dinner on the island. After reading multiple reviews and seeing luscious looking photos we were excited to visit The Half Shell. It's cute, has an inviting outdoor area and was packed on a Tuesday night. Servers were efficient and friendly. My soft shell crab BLT was good as was the bacon wrapped green beans. However, the fried oysters my husband ordered somehow missed the oyster part. Small, cherry tomato sized clumps of fried dough was it. We sliced them and pulled them apart but still found no oysters. This is supposed to be THE oyster place.
