The Hackney was recommended over and over so we decided to try and get a seat for dinner without having a reservation. We arrived early with the expectation we would be seated at the bar. The decor is modern and lovely. We started with cocktails, the Cloudy G&T and Sting like the bee. We were treated to an amuse bouche of gazpacho and focaccia with a brown sugar butter - delicious! I opted for the fig risotto and my husband went with the lamb loin. My risotto was served with a truffle balsamic drizzle which I asked for on the side since I find truffle is often overpowering. The balsamic sauce had a nice zing and I ended up using about 1/2 of the amount I was offered. My one tiny complaint of the entire evening was the size of the portion of risotto for $38 - however it was very tasty, not mushy or sticky and honestly I knew I wanted dessert so I would not have eaten a larger portion anyway. My husband enjoyed his lamb, cooked to a perfect medium, the sauce and carrots were also a tasty accompaniment so a winner there! For dessert we had the sticky toffee pudding and the blueberry crème brûlée - both were amazing! We also ordered an Americano and a bourbon to enjoy with the desserts. The bartenders were attentive and made sure we were not overlooked. The bathroom was clean and tidy, loved the individual hand towels. High praises for Hackney and we will definitely make the drive to return. Looking forward to a fall trip back to Washington. Total bill with tip for 2 was just over $200. Enjoy! read more

What a disappointing night. Slow service & my braised chicken dish tasted like nothing but salt. We were seated at a tiny table pushed up against the furnace but we'd had reservations for 2 weeks. No more tables available, the owner said, but two couples were seated after us at other normal tables. We're not two headed ppl so not sure why we drew the short straw. My husband and I were very disappointed with our meal. We had a 7:00 reservation for a Friday night. The place was practically empty. That should have sent up a red flag. our server was friendly, but a bit unpolished for a restaurant that is trying so hard to be upscale. She brought us out 2 small pieces of bread, some sweet butter, and some sort of sauce in a tiny pitcher that was very off-putting. We proceeded to order the oyster appetizer. These oysters were the tiniest I've ever seen! They were swimming in some kind of green swamp juice. Not good at all. Our entrées came out quickly. The portion size was tiny, like the oysters. My husband did say his steak was cooked perfectly. I asked our server if I had mistakenly ordered the scallop appetizer. She assured me it was the entrée portion. Ugh. Wow! What a place. Beautifully and tastefully refurbished former bank building (entrance to the kitchen is through the vault...doors still there). We went to the hackney a few months back after hiking at goose creek state park. I had grits and steak with an egg and my husband had the full breakfast. Man the grits were some of the best I have had... reminded me of the ones I had at Husk in Nashville. Our waitress was knowledgeable about gluten free options for me on the menu. It was so lovely to have a pot of really good tea and enjoy our Sunday brunch after the hike. Thank you so much! read more

High tea at the Hackney on Saturday afternoon cannot be beat! I have to eat gluten free and the chef graciously prepared many of the items (biscuits, cake, sandwiches) with a fantastic gluten free flour. The chocolate was of the highest quality and the chef confirmed it was of French origin. The staff went out of their way to make sure our group was taken care of and I appreciated it immensely! I'm from eastern NC and am so happy that a restaurant of this caliber is in Washington and seems to be very popular. read more

I needed a venue for a bridesmaids luncheon in Washington. I was unfamiliar with restaurants in the area and basically started reading reviews. We just had it this past Friday at The Hackney and it couldn't have been more perfect. The restaurant is so pretty. Susanne and her wait staff were wonderful as well as the food. Fabulous meal last night! My girlfriend and I both had the 3 course dinner with a wine paring. All 3 courses were exceptional and the wines were pared perfectly to the food. Might want to retool their menu. On a Saturday night able to walk right in and get a seat. All the other places downtown had a 45 minute wait. Wonder why? Prices just way too high. Portions skimpy. Food was okay but nothing to write home about. Filet mignon was not very thick and burnt on both sides. Do they ever clean the grill? Maybe I am just not one for all the culture and stuff. A good old steak and baked potato is what I am looking for. A decent salad bar would be nice. $10 for short cake is a little much. read more

Very disappointing outing .. oyster appetizer: 4 oysters, 3 had less than quarter size bites, 1 was served completely out of the shell. Shyrah wine overly dry, bitter, served late and WAY overpriced. Bread served late, had to keep asking for it, finally came as 2 small cold slices, each cut in half. Server tossed plates to table, no presentation. Main course filet mignon, small but nice cut, no flavor, veggies meager but tasty, potatoes served without advertised condiment (had to ask for it). Grouper excellent. Nobody checking plates before service and waitress not paying attention to the overall delivery to the table. Overall poor value for a VERY high price. Brunched there weeks ago, much better experience overall but also very overpriced. Not inspired to return but few options in the area. read more

We dined at The Hackney on Father's Day which was also our anniversary this year. For the prices they charge and the skimpy portions, they need to get their act together. Located in an old bank building, I believe, with very high ceilings the acoustics are terrible. New tables and chairs are attractive except for the table legs are too close together. I observed quite a number of the patrons having issues with trying to sit comfortably for their meal. I ordered a Bloody Mary; for $10 you get a small drink served in a small tumbler glass. The drink was tasty, but very small for a Bloody Mary and shy on vodka. We both ordered the catch of the day and grits, the catch being shrimp. No salad, no veggies. I ordered the smallest salad: $7.00 for a cup of very bitter greens. Server brought out the salad with the main course. We did have a couple delicious small deserts. $85.00 for two. A little steep for Washington fare. You know how the bill will show what the tip will be for a 15%, 17%, 20% tip? This one started at 20%; a bit presumptuous for mediocre experience... The Hackney has potential, they need to get their act together. read more

Wow, what a treat! We attended a wedding in Belhaven on May 4 and while touring around the area we happened upon The Hackney in Washington and had an outstanding lunch! The Hackney is a beautifully restored bank with a contemporary, global decor featuring luxurious teal velvet banquets and a stunning bar. My husband still raves about his "Salt of the Earth" cocktail made with fresh salted cucumber, lime and gin. Think London mojito! The cheese puff biscuits were divine as was the shrimp and grits, which resembled New Orleans barbecued shrimp on luscious grits. From cocktails to desert, everything was spot on. The Hackney is a gem for Washington and would be at home in New Orleans or London. We would drive an hour or more to eat here...wish we lived closer! read more

The English language does not have an adjective that would accurately describe the level of amazing the food at The Hackney is. Our waitress started our meal with a freshly baked, crusty on the outside, soft and warm on the inside, sour dough bread. The spread for the bread could be described as sweet and nutty. Next came the tomato salad. The aroma itself was sating. I would have sworn I was standing next to a tomato plant surrounded by fresh basil. The taste was a flavor explosion! The ground black pepper accentuated the flavor of the tomatoes and mozzarella to a level of perfection I have never experienced. Just when we thought the meal could not get any better our entree arrived. The way the filet looked and smelled was only topped by how it tasted. It was tender and juicy and flavorful and cooked exactly as each of us had requested. I can honestly say that I have never had a filet that tasted this good. This is probably one of the best meals I've had traveling in any city in the US. I travel a lot for work and I am fortunate to experience many different restaurants. The restaurant space is perfect. It's a renovated building where a bank used to be which creates a very peaceful, quiet, open, and clean space. The owner and bar tender were really nice and fun to talk to about the restaurant and town of Washington. The food here was really out of this world. The heirloom tomato burrata salad, home made bread, ribeye steak and deconstructed pecan pie for dessert were the options I luckily chose. It was amazing. read more

We had been looking forward to trying out this restaurant for a while so on my husband's birthday (Jan. 29, 2022) we made the trip over from New Bern. Sadly the 'little things' added up to a big disappointment! There were 6 of us but the table was set for 5, not a big deal except we had to keep asking for another place setting. A 2-person table was added to our 4-person table and it was wobbly because the adjustable pieces for the feet of the table were laying on the top of our booth (I guess they were picked up but not put back on) So we kept trying to put pieces of paper under the leg to try to 'shore' it up! Oh, it was a very cold night and our table was the first one by the door which was extremely chilly (there were inner doors that could've been shut to avoid this) One of our party ordered sweet iced tea but tasted it & found it wasn't. The waitress told him to stir it as they put in simple syrup...she stood there for him to do this & try to make sure it was to his liking. Well, there were no spoons/straw/swizzle stick. (we had asked for one before) so he picked up his knife to stir it & the waitress just watched without offering one. We also noticed that the beautiful staircase in the entry had 'stuff' just piled up on the landing along with a huge toilet paper bundle on the staircase. A console near the distillery was also piled with 'junk'. One of our party (who had been in the catering business for 25 years in Washington DC) said this would never 'fly' with her staff. She had also asked mid-meal for more bread and we were charged for that....it would've been nice for the waitress to have said there would be an upcharge. So how was the food? It was fine but because of all this 'lack of attention to detail' we weren't that impressed. I would say this is an upscale place so there are big expectations and they really missed the mark. Overall, all of us won't be making another visit here. And we had 2 other couples that had been planning to come but are now re-thinking even bothering because of our experience. P.S. Another little oddity is the servers wearing sweatshirts....just seemed a bit inappropriate for the setting. read more
