Imagine the Grounds of Alexandria had a baby and that baby divorced it's parents and went to live in North Sydney because it couldn't handle the parking in Alexandria. Actually the parking in this area here is still a bit of a mission but who cares because once you're inside and that first sip of sweet sweet Aperol Spritz hits your lips you'll forget all about the roving bands of rabid North Sydney Council Rangers and sink into sunshine, views, and a big, airy, Hampton-esque fitout that'll have you sitting up to beg for buttermilk, if that's a beverage you're partial to and don't mind grovelling for, because it's not on this menu, or any menu that I'm aware of outside of, I don't know, Iowa cow country. The premises are still owned by North Sydney Leagues Club, so if you're inside the 5km radius you'll need to become a member ($10 for 3 years + they send you drink vouchers = deal of the century), but it's worth it for long lunches, rustic drinks, a petting zoo on Sundays, and my new favourite co-working spot: the outside tables with a long black and a fresh breeze tickling my chin whiskers. The Greens North Sydney is a newly refurbished bar and bistro formally Norths Bowlo. They have have taken over part of the North Sydney Bowls Club which is still there. " Run by former exec chef at The Grounds Alexandria, Lilly Fasan a, the focus at The Greens is very much both on food and drink. They've hired bartender Matt Le Rade to run the bar -- and he's put together a good-looking drinks menu." Taken from Australian Bartender". Opening day was 10th November, however, the bistro was not open until 11th. So we had what they only had on offer which was roast lamb, with herb potato salad and a warm panini roll all for the value price of $15. I look forward to trying their full menu when i get a chance to go back. This spot is perfect! Opening just in time for the summer season. It is a great change from the city and because it is a new shiny place to visit. Load of outdoor seating with the Sydney Harbour and Bridge as a sparkling backdrop whilst enjoying a game of lawn bowls, paired with cocktails or beer. which ever takes your fancy. We wanted to organize a large get together for our friends and, were suggested we try this place. It opened last November after extensive renovation and, what a great place it is. You need to be a member or live 5k outside the location in order to enter here, not dissimilar to RSL or other clubs in Sydney. Membership costs $10, I believe. They have a capacity of 300-400 people inside and out. They unfortunately do not take reservations so, if you have a big group your only choice is to get there early and, square away a section, which we did. The place does pack out and its popular, which I can fully understand. The choice of food and drink is extensive and they have a decent cocktail menu. I had the burger which came in a brioche and it was amazing :-) the chips were the best I have had in a very long time and tasted amazing. Staff are friendly and, I wish, their bouncers would be slightly more flexible, but it's the norm in Sydney and you just have to put up with it. I would happily come here again. It's a fabulous location with good value food and drink. A fabulous addition to North Sydney. read more

A bit of a mixed feeling coming out of the greens - it is probably worth visiting during daytime rather than dinner to enjoy the layout at its best. Outdoor area also look nice. Came here with a group of 12 - the large table area is a bit outside of the "vibe" Close to the bar and was more quiet. At least you can have conversation among a large group. The food is fairly good but do not expect to be blown away. The lamb shoulder for 2 (45$) was a bit overcooked for myself but the jus was delicious. Burgers and Fish and chips were ok - most likely frozen fries though. Last try was the crab spaghetti - fresh with a lot of herbs and greens, but a lot of oil as well. Staff AT the entrance are a bit rude but waiters are lovely. I Will come back again in summer read more

New! Close to home! Exciting! Wondrous! Amazing! OK, maybe I got a bit over-excited. Seriously though, nothing else like this nearby so I was happy to take a punt when we were at a loose end for dinner on a nice evening. First thing: car park is ALWAYS full. On a 'quiet' Thursday night they had about 400 punters in. And, to be fair, it was by no means crowded. Second thing: I live too close to slip in as a guest, so pinged for a $10 joining fee, since it is a sports club - meh, ok. Alrighty, let's go! Bar - very nice, helpful staff, good list of house cocktails and make all the faves as well, plus willing to give food recommendations. Fit-out is kinda interesting - lots of plants, stained wood and white caney-type furniture - I guess you might call it Summer Chic, or something. Outside, big tables, lots of large outdoor seats in huddles for groups, an aviary, and a view that is seriously gold. Menu: well, something for most. Share plates, Kids menu (and trust me, there are a LOT of kids here, it is VERY family friendly) salads, mains, deserts - o dear what to choose? I had been recommended the heirloom tomato salad, so that, then the wagyu beef burger is apparently popular, so that, and for her a small serving of fish and chips. So, lets be clear - this is NOT fine dining, it is up-market pub grub, not gastro pub, but good stuff, it seems, certainly to judge by the several hundred folks enthusiastically chowing down on the offerings. You order at the bar and take a number, then a server comes and finds you. This seems to be a bit of a flaw, as we saw any number of servers wandering around extensively looking for the owner of the food. First to come was the tomato salad and her fish and chips. The salad is a winner, with some kind of wafer-thin crunchy sheets and whipped cheese, and the variety of tomatoes with some watermelon mixed in was awesome! Fish and chips - not so much, bit cold on arrival, and fish a bit dry, but she ate it all folks, so it can't have been all bad. Had a bit of a long wait for my burger, but it turned out to be worth it. The bun - OMG so light and soft and delicious - the chips nice and crunchy and salty, and the burger juicy and tender. So, over all, food probably 3 stars, but hey, it's outright awesomeness as a venue gets it over the line for a 4, and in the no-doubt many subsequent visits as I work my way through the menu (can't wait to try the pork belly for two) I will update the review. read more

Second time in two weeks, and has not disappointed. Last Friday night was busy with lingering lunch goers and then the night crew arrived. Very good vibe, and a good mix of a crowd. The second visit today for lunch. On both occasions the service is welcoming and efficient despite the busy crowds. Good range of beers, spirits and cocktails and the systems seem to work quite well. Good is great and in my pursuit of the best burger in Sydney this is definitely a front runner, neck and neck with another new favourite. The menu is extensive and well presented and very fresh. Good investment with a low key approach but just below the surface is an efficient system running the place. Well done The Greens, just keep the crowd well balanced and the security a Lowe profile snd we'll be back!! read more

My first bowler club experience! and I LOVED IT! What a great way to get together with your friends for the afternoon and celebrate. Our group was there for a "baby shower' - basically a bunch of 28-40's with an excuse to get on the lash. The Greens provided a very large space for about 30 of of us to lounge, eat and drink. Kids were running everywhere but no one was annoyed because there is enough room. Drink prices were average and the food was your typical fare. I loved the decor, shamps, good food, beautiful weather and the city in the background. Not a member of this club? no worries - just check in. read more

Food sads are the worst kind of sads. I had heard good things about the revamped Greens and when I received a 50% off food dining voucher, I was excited to get in the door. The menu was comprised of your standard pub fare: one type of burger, one type of steak, fish & chips, a chicken salad, a pie, and not much else. We decided to split the burger and the rib eye. Happily, the rib eye came out as ordered (medium rare), and the pesto butter on top was a nice addition. The burnt sauce underneath soaking into the chips was not. The steak itself was a bit cold and under seasoned, but was okay with some salt and the serve-your-own mustards and horseradish. The burger; however, was stone cold. Like processed-cheese-slices-straight-outta-the-fridge-never-had-a-dream-to-melt kinda cold. Even at half price I came pretty close to returning it to the kitchen, but the flavourless patty, too-thick tomato, and salad dressing-like sauce slathered on the cold white bun had me pretty certain that even at the top of its game, this burger wouldn't come close to anything I'd fall in love with, so it was left largely uneaten. This was going to be a 2 star review based on the steak being okay-ish and the under seasoned chips being crunchy, but on our way out when I went to let the front desk know the ladies' room was out of toilet paper the girl behind the counter could be heard telling her male counterpart that she was "sick of this f'ing s**t " and that people were "overreacting" as it was "only one stall out of toilet paper". Recommend the cocktails, especially the one which comes in a hollowed-out watermelon and food is fresh and presented well - but don't recommend how the venue is being run. First impressions are key and here, every patron walks through the mess of a road and car park with yellow-clad security guards directing all the cars reversing / doing 3 point turns up and down the road trying to get in and out of the car park that always looks full. The Roots is housed in a revamped lawn bowls club but the entrance to the restaurant / bar is the original building in need of renovation. The entrance feels like a human version of the car parking scenario above - everyone has to sign in (like at an RSL club) to be admitted to the restaurant / bar and kids are allowed in so on weekends it is chaotic. The restaurant / bar itself have been renovated and looks like a bright, airy greenhouse. However this is spoilt by the disorganised staff who let people in and allow them to place food orders at the bar even though the seating area is full. I had high hopes for The Roots given a lot of my friends had mentioned it but look back at the experience as chaotic and crowded. read more

Ventured here after hearing that the Greens do one of the best burgers in Sydney! I was intrigued as I consider myself a bit of a burger aficionado so couldn't wait to try it out. The burger was $19 with a side of chips, it came out very quickly although the place was not very busy at all. The burger looked great, the bun soft and the salad fresh with melted cheese over the patty. It looked the goods!! The chippies look delish as well they were cooked perfectly. From the first bite I knew it was no longer love at first sight, the burgers creamy sauce just meant that there was no contrast in the burger. I went on the hunt for some tomato sauce and they didn't have any! What kind of place doesn't have tomato sauce?? The burger also lacked in the fact that the pickles were instead some time of shaved cucumber. The chips were delicious but the burger was truly average it just lacked in taste it had all the right looking components but the taste didn't have the goods! Overall the experience was just ok, the chips were the saving grace however I wasn't impressed about the membership fee either. To go to lunch there and order a burger, drink & pay membership set me back $34. Fair enough you get vouchers for the place but I don't really intend on returning unless there is an event there that I am required to go to. read more

We came here for a breakfast and, as noted in previous reviews, was surprised by how a similar vibe to The Grounds in Alexandria exists - minus the animals. A number of different areas to order from, including bar areas and food areas. An inside and outside area, with heaps of interesting areas to sit. At the time this place was climbing with children, so very family friendly. As also noted previously, parking is a mission, but early in the morning not so much. Coffees are good, as is the food. Service is perfunctory, but its worth coming here for the view alone. read more

What a fantastic spot for overpriced beers and people watching. This is a fascinating Petrie dish of the idle rich that infect the LNS. Eavesdrop on their conversation and learn how great the country house with the attached winery in Slovakia is doing or how the Balinese maid just isn't working out or how there's a Labor plot to overthrow the government and POOR OLD JOE AND MELISSA. Lots of coupling going on here and a fair few dynastic mergers no doubt. Take a roll on the greens this establishment eponymously takes its name from or just kick back and enjoy the view over the Harbour. The burgers are pretty good but the roe is bizarre and overpowered by fennel. This really is quite a fascinating place. If you live on the LNS you have to pay $10 to become a member but they send you a voucher 2 months later for $10 drinks - just enough for a beer. read more

Love that The Greens has opened in North Sydney. There's not many outdoor venues around, and this is a great spot, with views of the harbour from parts of it, although it can get fairly breezy on windy days. It's also dog friendly! I've come here multiple times in large groups for lunches (such as a birthday celebration), and the food and drinks have always been great. So far I've tried the fish and chips, burger and one of the pasta dishes. My pick of the lot was the fish and chips, although the burger is also great if you don't mind the copious amounts of sauce. Usually we've aimed to get there a bit earlyish, so we can get a decent table, although that's more of an issue in summer. I also noticed last time that you can now book! This was a bit frustrating previously, as one day when the weather was a bit moody, we wanted to sit inside, but most of it was booked out by a "friend of the manager" despite the no-booking policy! It makes sense to open it up to everyone. Looking forward to heading there soon in the evening once daylight savings starts. read more

The Greens is a strange place, both good & not so good. Firstly if you have children young or old then this place is ideal for you, plenty of room for prams & some good outside space for toddlers & older children. The decor is light & airy & provides a feeling of being in a conservatory. The food or At least the dishes we had were disappointing. I had the trout salad, which was presented lovely, & served with dill, onion & potato, all mixed & placed delicately on a plate. However The fish wasn't seasoned & lacked flavour, the vinaigrette wasn't punchy enough & the overall taste was just lacking & bland. For $23 I expect more both in flavour & portion. (Slightly skimpy on the trout) my husband had burger & fries which was nice if somewhat bland again. The atmosphere is busy & bright & yet at the same time relaxed. The service was good, the food arrived within minutes of ordering. There is ample space to eat & drink & a large car park if you should need. Overall I would say the facilities are good & if you have a delicate palate then you'll enjoy the food. Worth going even if just for a beer & chat with friends. read more

The burger is abysmal. The bread is so thick, and tasted and felt stale. Of our table of 9 we ordered 3 beef burgers and none of us enjoyed it. Two of us eventually gave up eating the bread and just ate the meat. The chips were cold, also tasted stale and had a weird after flavour. I ordered a chocolate milkshake with extra ice cream to make it thick, when it arrived it looked like chocolate sauce blended through milk. To top it off when you enter the The Greens and wait to be checked in at reception all you can smell is a 'dirty bathroom' smell. read more

Had lunch and drinks for the first time here. Soacious outdoor area and has a Merivale feel to it. Food was excellent and came out faster than we could almost find our way back to the table. The chocolate delice dessert was a real winner and so was the prawn salad. There are lots of people with kids indoors. I recommend booking a table as they fill up quickly on a nice day. Went to The Greens Boxing Day for lunch with family group found the food has really gone downhill all about trendy. My chicken salad will become the family joke looked like something washed up on the beach and tasted worse. The burgers were raw in the centre and deserts were boring and not child friendly. The Greens is a restaurant in the old North Sydney Bowling Club. Its a great location with views to the city. We got there at 5:30 on a Wednesday, and were able to go right in and choose our tables. The staff were welcoming.after a half hour the crowds poured in and the large outside area was almost full. We quickly ordered from the bar, and were given a number to put on the table. It became a bit confusing for the staff as they were bringing out the food, looking for the appropriate table. After the first delivery the number on the table was taken away by staff! We still had 5 more deliveries to come. It appeared to be not well organised. However when the food came out, it was delicious. The lamb neck in pastry was great as was the grilled fish and chips. One of our party had the pork belly which they loved. The dessert of pineapple and coconut ice cream was disappointing, as the ice cream had no flavour and the pineapple was too predominant. But All in all, it was a great night. read more
