And when it comes to food, it makes you…read moreattach feelings and memories to that food, and makes you think that whack food is actually dope. Like, for instance, a cannoli filled with frosting. That's not acceptable, full stop. But it might be acceptable to you if you've been eating whack cannoli all of your life. (More like CAN'Tnoli, am I right? Thank you -- I actually stole that piece of comedy gold.) If you've been eating whack cannoli for decades because that's what grandma's been buying and bringing to get-togethers, and you love grandma, then you associate grandma-things with love, and they taste good to you. Again, nostalgia is a heck of a drug, and much like other drugs, it makes food taste way better in our minds than it actually does in real life. I feel like that is what is in play here at Hart Bakery & Gifts. Hart Bakery has been around a long time. It's the third oldest bakery in Indianapolis! So, people have been buying baked goods from this place for generations. People have their favorites, obviously, and have their memories. But I have no such allegiance to Hart Bakery. I've only lived in Indiana for 10 years, and I only recently heard about this place, so I went in with a clean slate. Grandma be danged. I visited to get some donuts. Most of the donuts were gone by the time I arrived (11 o'clock-ish), but I did snag a glazed twist and two sprinkle cake donuts. Because I wanted to taste a little bit of everything, I also got a peanut butter cup cookie and a cannoli. The women behind the counter also offered samples of their cinnamon-sugar donut holes, and their most popular pecan thumbprint cookies. So I feel like I got to taste the rainbow, so to speak. The pecan thumbprint cookies were indeed the best things I tasted. They are tiny little things: maybe the size of a quarter, and filled with white frosting. I could have done without the frosting, but you have to know that this bakery is very old-fashioned, so of course there's royal icing on an already sweet-enough cookie. My second favorite thing from this bakery was the peanut butter cup cookie. Actually, all of the cookies looked really good, and I think a cookie is a good bet here. My cookie was quite large and was more than enough to satisfy two people. The cinnamon-sugar donut holes came in third. The donut holes at Hart are not yeasted donuts like you'd find in other places. They're cake donut holes, so they are denser and more chewy. They were good, but one was more than enough for me. The other donuts that I got were just OK. I am a glazed twist lover, and I love them because they are light, but the glazed twist here were very dense. I brought home cake donuts for my kids, and they didn't finish them, which is not a good sign! My children always finish donuts. The cannoli was my least favorite. In this case, I think you'd need to take the gun and leave the cannoli, if I'm being honest. No mascarpone was injured in the making of these cannoli, and they really did taste like they were filled with white frosting. (Not even vanilla, but white frosting.) I dunno, man. If you're not going to make a cannoli with mascarpone, then you just need to not even offer it, is my feeling. If you're in the market for Precious Moments figurines, then Hart Bakery & Gifts is your place. Because the "& Gifts" part of the name means two walls full of Precious Moments porcelain collectibles, plus other kinds of knickknacks, signs and displays for the home. Not my home, but someone's home. I'm glad that I visited Hart Bakery, but I'm not sure I'll be returning. (Or, if I did, it would be for a bag of those little pecan cookies. Them's the shiz.)

There are more stores closed than open and the mall exterior needs some major TLC. There were very few patrons in the mall. It had a strange feel to it. There were more workers than shoppers. The mall does have some real hard workers that are very friendly in the stores, most of which are small and/or local business. I like to support local, but someone needs to take over management of the mall and put some money into it. I could not find a food court or bathroom while I was in there. The mall may have had them but I just could not find them. The mall has a reputation for being rough and unsafe. The area that it is in may not be the best, but I never felt in danger during my daytime visit. I don't think I would recommend going here just to shop around, but if you have a specific destination in the mall in mind, go for it.

Flowers, in all forms, should be a normal part of life. And cut flowers have this magical property of bringing just a sprinkle of nature into our homes. Recently, I needed to have flowers delivered. I have a favorite florist on the North side, but I thought the delivery address may be out of their zone or I would have to pay extra. So, to Yelp I went! And, once again, the Yelp community came through in a big way! Penny's was the best reviewed florist in the area I was searching. Honestly, I was a little nervous because their featured image is of 30 floor lamps and not flowers. But I realized they also sell home decor (& more!). And I couldn't really argue with the 4.8 rating (4.9 after this review??). I have never visited Penny's in person, but I may stop by sometime to check out the housewares. I did my shopping online like you do for most florists. The website was easy to navigate and included pictures of the flower arrangements. I was also pleasantly surprised by their prices. They offered several price ranges, but even the lower range still offered great selections. I chose one right in the middle. Checking out was a breeze, as well as inputting all of the delivery information. There wasn't a way to select a time for delivery that I saw. You can type in requests, but there is also a note that says time requests are not guaranteed. But I moved forward hoping my delivery would take place during the business day. On the day of delivery, I received a courtesy call at 8:30am that he flowers were on their way and would be delivered in about an hour! The arrangement was beautiful, smelled exquisite, and looked like the photo online. Well, done, Penny's. Well, done! While my favorite bouquet continues to be that of a fine, red wine, I truly appreciate the scent of fresh-cut flowers. Over the past few years, I have realized just how important smell is to me. Whether it's the aroma of dinner roasting in the oven, lighting a candle after cleaning the house, or an intoxicating perfume lingering in the air... smells are powerful. Fresh flowers brighten up a room both aesthetically and olfactory-lly (?!).

Ziggi's is a chain coffee shop, but it's slightly smaller than that other coffee chain. (You know…read morethe one.) So I felt slightly better about kind-of-not-really-but-yes-sort-of supporting a local coffee shop. They have a drive-thru, but I parked and went inside to get my coffee. The Sundays were playing over the speakers when I entered, which is always a good sign. I just ordered a black cup of coffee -- they have medium and dark roast drip coffee. It was good coffee, and surprisingly, it got better as it got cooler. I've never had that happen before! Usually, black coffee gets more bitter as it sits, but not so with Ziggi's. They sell a variety of baked goods, packaged cookies, premade breakfast burritos, as well as other beverages that aren't coffee, like smoothies, teas, and something called Energy Infusions. In fact, these kinds of drinks make up the majority of their menu, and their menu didn't even have regular coffee on it. I had to ask if they even sell drip coffee, and indeed they do. The people who work here were very friendly and super efficient. The location is great -- right off the I-70.
