    Focaccia bread with cheese spread

I love this place! It is right down the street from my house so my mom and I popped in before the Christmas market began. We looked around at all of the things being sold by various artists. If you need a unique present for someone I'm sure you can find it here. They have candles, clothing, stuff for pets, art, etc. I bought a candle that smells like a sugar cookie and it's delightful. After walking through the store part of this place we came across the cafe itself and two women working it who were fabulous. Super nice and helpful! We tried the focaccia bread with tomatoes and a gourmet cheese spread. I had the raspberry beret latte which was delicious. And my mom and I got an apple muffin to split. We sat by the storefront window and got to people watch as they were setting up for the Christmas market in the street. Overall great experience I can't wait to come back to experience it again and try their other beverages

There are more stores closed than open and the mall exterior needs some major TLC. There were very few patrons in the mall. It had a strange feel to it. There were more workers than shoppers. The mall does have some real hard workers that are very friendly in the stores, most of which are small and/or local business. I like to support local, but someone needs to take over management of the mall and put some money into it. I could not find a food court or bathroom while I was in there. The mall may have had them but I just could not find them. The mall has a reputation for being rough and unsafe. The area that it is in may not be the best, but I never felt in danger during my daytime visit. I don't think I would recommend going here just to shop around, but if you have a specific destination in the mall in mind, go for it.

I remember when it was a vibrant, busy mall with a unique design that made it a rather fun place to shop. While one could possibly argue it's always been one of the lesser malls in Indy, for many years it held its own and served Indy's Far-Eastside pretty well. I'd been to Washington Square maybe 3-4 years ago, partly because I wanted to visit the adjacent Target and partly because I was just a little bit curious about a mall that had a reputation for having gone way downhill. What did I find? It was clearly deteriorating, but it still had a little bit of charm to it. It was probably about half full with locally owned businesses, but you couldn't help but wonder if it had any hope of surviving. I was in the area today and wanted to do a little bit of wheeling for exercise. I figured "Why not check out the mall?" Oy vey. Washington Square Mall is officially a dump. I mean it. Seriously. There's officially no legit reason to ever go near it, despite the fact that a handful of national chains continue to keep their shops open including Target (though the entrance from the mall is now closed), Burlington Coat Factory (I'd check the coats for lice here), Bed, Bath & Beyond (It's more like Bed, Bath, & Be Careful), and Victoria's Secret (The Secret is shame and low self-esteem). I believe there may be a Dick's Sporting Goods in here, though it may have actually closed. Truthfully, it was hard to tell with the handful of customers who seemed to be more meandering about than actually shopping. The vast majority of the stores seem to either be variations of nail salons, hair styling, small gift shops, a handful of ethnic restaurants, and at least a couple churches including longtime mall establishment Movie Theater Church. There are at least a couple of entire wings that seem to be shut down, though in some cases it's simply true that the stores open for select hours such as evenings only or weekends only. Judging from the complete lack of customers, the notion of being open 40 hours a week here is kind of silly. While this mall has experienced crime, fairly regularly, the truth is I never actually felt unsafe except for one particularly unusual wing of the mall where almost everything was closed and people kept coming out of one particular spot. They didn't bother me. I didn't bother them. However, it's also worth noting that the lighting in the mall is haphazard at best, the automated doors are in disrepair, any notion of decor has gone way out the window (much worse than Eastgate before it finally closed), and, at the risk of coming off the wrong way, at least 2/3 of these stores gave off the kind of aura that made you think better than using a credit card because you weren't quite sure who would end up with the numbers. Unfair? Perhaps, but the vibe was undeniable. The truth is that I love dives. I live in a rough area. I'm not hesitant to go anywhere, but I truly can't fathom a reason I will now ever go back to this run down retail outlet that is in serious, and I'd dare say unsafe, disrepair from the parking lot to the hallways to a good majority of the stores. You know how you kind of laugh at the Segway riding, completely unarmed mall cops in other malls? At Washington Square, mall security is packin' (but actually rather friendly!). The Far Eastside seriously needs this mall to work or to give way to some sort of different retail outlet. As is? For the handful of stores you might like, it's worth driving out of your way to go to safer, cleaner, and more customer friendly locations in other parts of the city.

Flowers, in all forms, should be a normal part of life. And cut flowers have this magical property of bringing just a sprinkle of nature into our homes. Recently, I needed to have flowers delivered. I have a favorite florist on the North side, but I thought the delivery address may be out of their zone or I would have to pay extra. So, to Yelp I went! And, once again, the Yelp community came through in a big way! Penny's was the best reviewed florist in the area I was searching. Honestly, I was a little nervous because their featured image is of 30 floor lamps and not flowers. But I realized they also sell home decor (& more!). And I couldn't really argue with the 4.8 rating (4.9 after this review??). I have never visited Penny's in person, but I may stop by sometime to check out the housewares. I did my shopping online like you do for most florists. The website was easy to navigate and included pictures of the flower arrangements. I was also pleasantly surprised by their prices. They offered several price ranges, but even the lower range still offered great selections. I chose one right in the middle. Checking out was a breeze, as well as inputting all of the delivery information. There wasn't a way to select a time for delivery that I saw. You can type in requests, but there is also a note that says time requests are not guaranteed. But I moved forward hoping my delivery would take place during the business day. On the day of delivery, I received a courtesy call at 8:30am that he flowers were on their way and would be delivered in about an hour! The arrangement was beautiful, smelled exquisite, and looked like the photo online. Well, done, Penny's. Well, done! While my favorite bouquet continues to be that of a fine, red wine, I truly appreciate the scent of fresh-cut flowers. Over the past few years, I have realized just how important smell is to me. Whether it's the aroma of dinner roasting in the oven, lighting a candle after cleaning the house, or an intoxicating perfume lingering in the air... smells are powerful. Fresh flowers brighten up a room both aesthetically and olfactory-lly (?!).

So I felt slightly better about kind-of-not-really-but-yes-sort-of supporting a local coffee shop. They have a drive-thru, but I parked and went inside to get my coffee. The Sundays were playing over the speakers when I entered, which is always a good sign. I just ordered a black cup of coffee -- they have medium and dark roast drip coffee. It was good coffee, and surprisingly, it got better as it got cooler. I've never had that happen before! Usually, black coffee gets more bitter as it sits, but not so with Ziggi's. They sell a variety of baked goods, packaged cookies, premade breakfast burritos, as well as other beverages that aren't coffee, like smoothies, teas, and something called Energy Infusions. In fact, these kinds of drinks make up the majority of their menu, and their menu didn't even have regular coffee on it. I had to ask if they even sell drip coffee, and indeed they do. The people who work here were very friendly and super efficient. The location is great -- right off the I-70.
