I love chinese food. So when we found this place we decided to check them out. I have always been a trooper when it comes to buffets. This place has it and it is well stocked. Was craving sizzling rice soup. Ordered the soup and sizzling house pan fry. Was really disappointed. The dishes were not the same. They're substituing everything with zucchini in stead of bean pods. Went today (10/7/14, 12:15pm) for lunch and I absolutely CANNOT recommend this place. My mom and I had the lunch buffet. The "good": -The only veggies that didn't look dead were the sauteed string beans. They tasted fairly good, as did the so-called BBQ chicken (smothering something in BBQ sauce doesn't make it barbecue) and fried rice. Sushi was edible but not what I would consider to be good. Everything else: - Desserts: Lots of cheap canned fruit, dry crumbly cookies, soft serve that is too soft and a bit soupy. - Entrees: A number of dishes looked like they were mislabeled. Two of the three shrimp offerings were whole shrimp -head, eyes, legs and all. - Appetizers/sides: I tried some of the egg rolls -they were okay. - Avoid: Fried chicken pieces prepared for sweet and sour chicken -it was flavorless and dry. The cream cheese fried wontons might've been okay if they'd had more flavor and were fresher. Service / Preparation: - It was understandable that the staff service would be minimal given our choice was to have the lunch buffet. I saw a worker sit at a table with a large tray of egg roll filling and stuff/roll egg rolls while watching TV. It would not have drawn my attention so much if it weren't for a couple of things: 1) I did not see her sanitize the table surface she was preparing the egg rolls on. No tray, no mat -just rolled egg rolls on table surface. 2) I saw worker blow her nose in tissue, stuff it in her apron pocket, and continue to work without washing her hands! Cleanliness / Upkeep: - Bathroom smelled (as in like bleach) and looked clean but is in need of maintenance. The door doesn't align with frame and requires the user to lift the door in order to close and lock it. Also, the bathroom used to have two stalls but now it's two toilets -one with a full stall enclosure, one without. -The floors were absurdly sticky!!! I have no idea why. * EDIT * (in response to business owner): I have been to this place before multiple times (grandparents' choice) and the day I went, the buffet food was par with what I recall of previous visits. I acknowledge that I am a food enthusiast but I try to be specific and fair, with considerations for quality, quantity, value, logistics, and differences in taste preferences. Our food was fresh and hot! It was packaged great and aside from some sauce in a bag nothing spilt. The orange chicken was my favorite and it was cooked the same without any soggy pieces. The soup was delicious, especially the flavor of the broth. We hadn't eaten there in years and I am so glad we tried it again! Definitely a must try in Tehachapi. read more

What a great difference at The Great Wall Chinese Resturant in Tehachapi ,Ca. A huge improvement now that the new owner took over and you can really tell the difference in the quality of food that is being served here . I am happy we tried it again Valentines Day we really enjoyed the food and were very happy with the improvement over the previous owner , the new owner is doing quite a good job and we are happy to go here again . read more

We had a good experience. :) We had not been here for several years we just weren't that into the food quality. The Vietnamese place across the street was closed early ughhhh so we came here for dinner , what a nice experience , the staff is excellent and very attentive , the restaurant was clean and attractive , the thick cream cheese wontons were fabulous and so was the eggroll and the orange chicken and some glazed pork pieces were super super yummy !! we did not like the egg foo young ..... it had no bean sprouts or any thing crunchy in it , also it was very hard like a breaded egg biscuit. I have gone back multiple times expecting The Great Wall to be Great again, just to be disappointed over and over. I mean yes they have some great food at times. I tend to skip any seafood after the first incident.. (hours and hours of discomfort) but to have the orange chicken be horribly dry or odd tasting is just plain sad. I understand this is no Panda express. But at least they realize it's necessary to rotate food.. pull old food off the line and toss it. Make less when the demand is low.. etc. Someone needs to get in there and really make the place better. Or maybe take out the buffet and make it a special weekend thing?? Until things change This place is no longer on my possible food places in town. I would rather head.out to Lancaster for Chinese food. read more

Ordered to-go. It was mid-afternoon, so they were not busy. Food was disappointing and bland. The kung pao chicken was made with soggy breaded chicken and zucchini instead of green peppers which did not add to the experience. The dumplings were ok. Typical thawed out and fried. First off let me say that my dislike for Chinese buffets remains steadfast, so that is a factor in this review. My wife, however loves them, hence the visit. There is a good variety to choose from and the food seemed to be fresh. We arrived at noon. The service was good considering we were two of the four diners at time. The restaurant was clean, so that's a plus. My hope was to find some different flavor profiles in the standard Chinese buffet staples such as the rice, chow mein in etc.... however they were almost exactly what you would expect in any typical CB. I understand that can be a good thing for most people, but I was looking for something that made them stand out from the rest. I always ask myself: Would I return? Since writing my original review, I have been back many times. This restaurant has good food & has never made me sick. I often get their "buffet to go", but have also dined in a handful of times (in addition to getting the wonton soup togo). Yum! I am never disappointed when I come here, and the food is always fresh & tasty. My only complaint is that some of the staff aren't as friendly as I think they could/should be, but I think it's mostly a language barrier thing. If you want Chinese food & don't want to leave Tehachapi, check this place out for yourself & don't let bad reviews/rumors discourage you.... there's got to be a reason they have stayed in business for 20+ years! read more

My husband and I were craving Chinese food one afternoon and didn't want to drive out of town to our favorite place so we stopped into The Great Wall. We went around 2pm on a Thursday and were immediately put off by the dated furniture but decided to try it out anyway (don't judge a book by it's cover, right?). First off, their buffet is the smallest buffet I've ever been too. Between my husband and I, we tried a bit of everything. The only thing worth finishing was the broccoli beef (my 16 month old devoured it!). Everything else was soggy, bland, cold and just not good. They had basic sushi rolls out as well which tasted like gas station sushi and their desserts were stale. We paid almost $10 we each for our buffets and almost $3 for a soda. Definitely not worth that price. Other than the food, the staff was very friendly and seemed to enjoy talking to my daughter. The restaurant itself was fairly clean and they are in a fairly decent location. They are in dire need of updating (1970s tables and discolored melamine plates are a big turn off) and need to figure out how to make more appetizing buffet food. read more

First time here and was very disappointed. The food was not good at all. Mandarin chicken was salty. So was the calamari. The noodles had a strange flavor. Fried rice was good and so were the egg rolls and cheese wontons. That's probably all that was good. They didn't have ice cream or sodas. All they had to offer to drink was water and iced tea. I have eaten here quite a few times. I have never been disappointed in the service or the food. The employees have always been very nice towards me and my family/friends, and very efficient. The food has, sometimes, been left a little too long in their trays, but that is more of an exception than the rule, in my opinion. I stop in here a few times within a few months for take-out or a quick lunch with my sister. My only complaint that is worthy of voicing, is seeing an employee preparing spring rolls on an unsanitized surface of a table. That gave me pause. Review for the buffet. The food is edible, some dishes better than others. Noodles were mush. Pot stickers like rubber. Most things fried and oily. But, buffets are rarely about quality (think casinos; 25 bucks a plate, subsidized by gambling) Buffets are about quantity. Hiking the PCT, burning 5000+ calories a day makes one want to eat a lot of food. This place has an 'A' rating by thy way. What does not work for me: soft drinks are not included, like other buffets, An extra $2. When I asked I was told a drink is included, could be a language mixup. As far as quality and variety, the selection is no where near the Asian buffet in Lancaster. The decor is bland to tacky and the advertising on the placemats is beyond tacky. Just tried this place and was pleasantly surprised. We rolled up at around 8 pm on a Saturday night and found the parking lot nearly full. We were greeted immediately upon arrival and drinks arrived before we even were seated. We decided to do the buffet, since we were hungry. Even though there were plenty of people in the place and it was quite a bit until closing time (9:30), they had either run out of some stuff or had stopped refilling it. Otherwise, they had a decent selection of hot dishes, like orange chicken, lemon chicken, potstickers, egg rolls, short ribs, sautéed shrimp, etc. The dishes were pretty fresh, but there were a few entrees that had sat out too long and were a little dry. Normally, buffets will change that out for a fresh batch, but I think given the late hour, they decided not to. Most desserts were boxed or canned, but they do have a sort serve machine. The staff was super nice, efficient, and attentive. They were always checking up on us, clearing the plates, refilling drinks. The price was decent for dinner. $10.75 for the buffet, but it doesn't include the drink. If the buffet was fully replenished, I would have given four stars. read more

We get take-out from here a couple of times a month. We get ours from the buffet table and they weigh it to determine the price, I don't know the exact price, but I think it's ~ $4.50.lb. It's usually about $5-7 per person for a take-out box full of food. We like the choices that they have. My family loves their broccoli beef, but I like my meat well-done and it's not, so I skip that entree. I like the pot stickers, mushrooms, korean bbq, s&s chicken, green beans. I think the rice and low mein is bland I usually don't get any of that. The orange chicken, which is my favorite at panda express, is just okay here. It has a kinda gritty coating and is fried hard in such large chunks that it's difficult to eat, I still get a few pieces for my take out box, but would love to see it improved :) read more

The service is absolutely top notch! From the owner or the young man greeting you when you walk in the door and to the Chefs or cleaning crews you meet in the hallway. The freshness of the food is great. Everything is made daily. They simmer 8-10 fresh chickens every day to use as the soup base. I like their seafood dishes. Going out with a baby is hard enough but taking out my sister and brother in law with their baby as well and having this lady yell at our server for making a mistake on our ticket 5 feet away from us pointing at us, mind us having our plates full, of course we lost or appetites! Oh but wait then she yells at us for leaving shrimp and telling us to pack it up cause she doesn't like to waste food and shrimp is expensive. We discovered this place a few years ago and now we stop there every time we head south. To begin with, this is an above-average Chinese lunch buffet for a rural community -- and we have eaten at many of those. The people who work there are very nice. They bring more food out pretty often so things don't get too old and dry. It's spacious and clean, not rundown and not overdone. Not crazy cheap, but good value. However, what sets Great Wall apart is one word: kal-bi. This is a Chinese buffet that does kal-bi -- marinated, thinly sliced Korean beef ribs. Great Wall has lots of kal-bi. All-you-can-eat kal-bi. They never run out of kal-bi. And not only that, but it's *really good* kal-bi. Tender, sweet, salty, kal-bi-y kal-bi. All you can eat for ... less than $10, I think. What a gem. read more

I have been a few times, usually dragged by friends and family. I will say I have never gotten ill from eating here, but to me a lot of their food takes the same, and if you don't get their buffet the prices are outrageous. The food is okay, the atmosphere is okay, and the service is horrible.
