I recently heard about The Great Escape Madison's move to a new location and I happened to be in the area to check it out - and I'm glad I did. I found some great hard-to-find CD singles and full length LP's on CD that I've been looking for and didn't spend more than $15. Score! I didn't interact with too many employees but the one gentleman I spoke with twice was very nice. I love this new location and I feel a bit safer walking around this neighborhood also. A great idea by The Great Escape to move to this location which seems larger - always a good thing. I hope to come back when I have more time to browse and when my pocketbook allows. read more

The power of nostalgia. If it weren't for The Great Escape (the company; not this location) being an imprint from my childhood, I would have bailed a while ago. The sub services are hit or miss. I've received books that were damaged without explanation. I have not received books on my pull list which has caused me to drive farther out of my way to other stores to buy the books I'd reserved at TGE. TGE specializes in cape books from the Big 2. Anything outside of that... you're taking a chance on. The employees are polite (some are even talkative) but there's a breakdown in services offered. Maybe they're moving away from comics and focusing more on music, games and toys. That's fine. The store may just not be for me anymore. You have to grow up sometime. read more

Never seen so many comics listed way over fair market value and not in very good condition

I miss the Great Escape in Hillsboro Village. I could walk there during lunch. I mean it's probably good it moved, I will definitely save money seeing as I don't have a car to get to the new one. I can however take the bus! So it gets three stars because it's lack of new albums. I go for the vinyl, nothing else. Okay I lie, one time I went to get a gift and there on the shelf behind the counter was a Ghostbuster bank. Best gift ever, ever!! The person I gave it to has his very own Ghostbuster suit that his wife made him. Back to the important stuff. I'm never disappointed at The Great Escape, I usually come out with at least two used records. Usually it's something along the lines of Journey, Fleetwood Mac, Berlin, etc. BUT, sometimes I want to buy an album new. This is not going to be the place. I always end up buying the $1.99 albums that tend to skip but it's okay, I feel like the crackle and skip adds character. I should try putting a Dr. Pepper on it, maybe it will play better. (Oh Dr. Dre, thank you for that commercial.) If you are interested in used vinyl The Great Escape is where it's at, if you want new stuff, well you may need to go elsewhere. Side note: I almost gave it 4 stars because a kid came in and bought Link. The fact that they sell Link makes me happy, what makes me even happier? That one of my beloved first generation Nintendo games was being utilized by a whole new generation at an affordable price! read more

I didn't even realize Great Escape had a location in Madison until recently. When I went in to check it out, I immediately realized this location easily trumps the one on Broadway. In addition to a decent selection of CDs, movies and vinyl, they also have action figures and posters. The staff at the Madison Great Escape clearly knows what they're doing. The two dudes I saw working in there today were Led Zeppelin fans with clear penchants for comics. The Pop/Rock CD selection was relatively sizable, but I didn't find anything very impressive. The Country section was also large, but I didn't really check it out. What was surprisingly enormous was the VHS section. They had countless titles, and, probably because of the lack of demand for VHS, they were all extremely cheap. Great Escape also had loads of comic books and figures. As I've noted before, I don't really read comics like I used to, but I intuited that it was a respectable selection. They also have a few posters, mostly Pink Floyd and TONS of Marilyn Monroe. The whole place smells fiercely of Nag Champa, and they actually sell an enormous variety of incense in the place. Talk about a diverse inventory. This place will keep you occupied for at least an hour or two. I say put it on the list. read more

This store has a GREAT collection of back issues of comics. However, the customer service is a big fat ZERO! The cashier stood right in front of me and said "I can help who's next"...as if I were invisible. This was, of course, after everyone in line was totally ignored while the "help" chatted with one another. Will I go back? Maybe, but certainly not because of the staff...they are worthless. read more

This place is a treasure just north of Nashville, and easier to get to than their Charlotte Pk location, though I love that store too. Since the Madison store moved into the newer building it's become a much more comfortable shopping experience, and the selection has expanded. I've read a few reviews criticizing the quality of the customer service, but honestly, I don't really expect good service in a place like this, so I don't hold it against them. Comic book and toy nerds aren't always known for their social skills. Usually people shopping in a store like this are already pretty familiar with what they're looking for, anyway. They've always been nice to me, and answered any questions I've had, as a seller or a buyer. read more

I've been to the Charlotte Pike Great Escape, and I like this one better. Both are in... questionable... parts of town. Also, I think this location just a tiny bit less insane about comic book loyalties. I ask about games and movies, and they seem to be comfortable talking about it. They generally have a great selection of lots of video games ranging from old Atari 2600 cartridges, to old school Nintendo, Super Nintendo, and Genesis games, clear up to PS3 and Wii stuff. I am opposed to buying media new, and only occasionally buy stuff new at book stores, and I've bought video game hardware and games themselves here more than anywhere else. Selection is generally good (not great), and the employees are always personable and knowledgeable. Good job. read more

This place is a collector's staple in Middle TN. I hit this store at LEAST once a week to see what has come in. Prices and selection vary from day to day as new stock comes in and different buyers are working. This location is a lot smaller than the Charlotte Pike location, but still gets lots of great collectibles. Don't trust a review from someone who has only made one visit. If you collect vinyl, comic books, action figures, video games, or any music memorabilia and are in the Nashville area, you definitely want to take the time to check this place out. I really enjoy the selection of toy/collectible merchandise that comes through the Madison location, there has been many a time I've spent more money than I intended here. Their assortment of loose and good condition toys is phenomenal as well as their vast selection of carded and import figured. However; the "dollar" dump bins they have underneath the CDs, while sometimes containing hidden treasures are a nightmare to go through. Not only because they are in complete disarray and half of them are broken, it's also the fact that you get the feeling they are left over from a yard sale and have been rained on multiple times and you're almost positive there's mold or any other number of creepy crawly contained within. Aside from that they have a decent amount of DVDs, CDs, and graphic novels. However their lack of concern with the customer is somewhat and sometimes very disappointing. Their are two gentlemen in particular of which I am referring, and if you work here, shop here, or have ever been rubbed the wrong way by an employee in the last 6 months you know who they are. But I get it, in this day and age being the hipster nerd who's obviously much more cultured and clearly has no time to assist you in your questions or show you something behind the counter because it's either an inconvenience to him or he simply despises the fact that you are making him work, is something to be heralded, hell even admired at times! However I do not approve and don't care to tolerate it. Don't even get me started when they're working alongside the mildly attractive and ONLY female employee there. Sheesh. Great place to check out some new and old vinyl, DVDs, comics, etc. I've came in looking for some things, unable to find them. I've also came in not looking, and left with a handful of stuff. It's hit and miss as any new and used place is, but that's what makes it fun. I've had ok service here, I've noticed other yelpers mentioning bad service experiences but I've not had that. You can find some deals on some things if you look around, so make sure you have some time to kill. read more

Visited this location of The Great Escape today with my son. He spent a great deal of time looking through their vinyl collection. I just recently had knee surgery and I'm sure it was obvious that I was in distress while walking about the store and finding no where to sit. The man behind the counter eventually asked if I needed anything. I asked if there was somewhere to sit and he just said, "No, sorry" even though there were two stools behind the counter. The polite and at the very least humane thing to do would've been to offer one of the stools for me to sit on but no, he didn't do that. I can't say I got the feeling they care much for their customers and I won't be back. read more

Most of the time I visit the Great Escape in Nashville on Charlotte Pike. Sometimes though I do make the trek to Madison to the Great Escape for a little variety. They do have some items there that I have never seen in the Nashville store. The Madison store is very small compared to the store on Charlotte Pike and is a little cramped and cluttered. Still, it is usually worth the trip up there now and then because I find things that I am not seeing anywhere else in the area. read more

I prefer to go to the other great escape on Charlotte but this one is so much closer. The selection here is not as big but I can always find something unique that I would rarely find at the other location. The staff is ok. They are not ass holes or anything, they are just guys doing their job. Nice for when I want to just get in and out. read more

I will never step foot in this store again. The boys that work there act rude,greedy and self important. I had a many items that I needed to sell and I really needed to give my stuff, what I thought, a good home. I was not expecting a huge amount of money but at least a FAIR price. I was to leave my stuff at the counter and the "toy guy" would look through it then I was to be called when he was done. After he was done he just walks away-apparently too good to talk business with customers. The shorter guy told me a price and it was so low it was just a slap in the face. They do not work with you concerning the prices. The short guy said he didn't know anything about pricing toys and things and wouldn't look me in the eye. He did tell me that certain things do sell and said some items will not. So, he doesn't know anything ,but can tell you what sells? Hmm. Also, I said I looked on ebay from their site. The short guy said that people on the internet ask for amounts far greater than the items are worth. I told him again it was from their site. No retraction from him so, by his own admission they sells things for far greater than the items are worth. The lack of professionalism, ethics, is appalling. They were greedy and seem to place themselves on personal pedestals. Very sad. I learned the hard way and will never go there again. They would not care anyway.. I just have to remember that they are boys and hopefully one day will grow into men that can look an adult in they eye, be honest and have integrity. Very frustrating. read more

I drove all the way out here to check this place out and I was told I couldn't drink my coffee that I just purchased while shopping. Screw that! I'm not letting it go cold while I shop. So, I recently had an unpleasant experience at this location, and I thought I'd get on here and talk about it. I came to this location on Tuesday, July 25th to sell a lot of things (VHS Tapes, CDs, DVDs, etc.). Most of the items I had brought were VHS tapes. When you give them your stuff to drop it off and come back later, they give you a little receipt with your name on it so that when you come back they know it's you. They also write down (for themselves) what you are selling to them, and for me, the first thing they wrote was VHS tapes. I was expecting at least $100.00 in cash for all of the things I had brought (there were bags and a box full of things). So, they call me after 4 HOURS to tell me they are finished, and that I would receive $64.00. I thought that was rather low for all the stuff I had given them. I knew they weren't going to take everything I had given them, but I figured it would just be a few things. I was fine with the money. But when I got all of the stuff back that they didn't want, I was upset. They had given back EVERY SINGLE VHS tape. My first thought was, "Why didn't they just tell me when I got there that they weren't going to accept any of the VHS tapes?" They made me wait 4 hours just to give back half of the stuff I had brought there, and half of the money I should've gotten. Now I'm stuck with it all taking up my closet space. This is just infuriating. I'll be taking my business elsewhere, and I usually spent a fair amount when I went. I'll go back to Goodwill. They don't suck. read more

I called in Friday to hold a action figure and trade stuff for it (which was action figures) but they didn't ask what I was trading for the figure, I came today trying to trade for some stuff and after waiting for a while they told me they would only give me $10 for one of the figures and I had and found out that their action figure buyer was not in to help them price figures which I had no idea they even had to have one, considering the fact I hardly ever get to come here because it's quite the drive it took quite a bit of my time today, I probably will never come here or any location again. Would not recommend trading items in with them. read more

Ok. I read the reviews and had to sign up and comment. I am in my early 50's and have been going here since I was in my 20's. They are exactly what they are supposed to be....a reasonably priced, used comic, movie, music, and collectable store. If they spent time cleaning everything the price would reflect it. Just for the record, Madison just got into their new store a few months back so some reviews aren't current. I admit I never sell my things here because I like a profit too but that just means I would do things the same way they do...buy low / sell high(er) so I won't fault them because they have good business sense, hence being in business for years. The story of how it started is cool if my understanding is right. A dad with a kid that liked comics (I believe was the product) and the dad started the business. We should all be so lucky. I met him at the Charlotte store during a sidewalk sale and will forever admire him. So...to the negative reviews... maybe crawl out of your stuffy basement dwelling or in other cases off your high horse where you use big words to sound superior and be smart enough to go there, get the deal and enjoy life a little. Maybe the guys DON'T really care if you are there because you don't sound like you go out of your way to be nice to others either. Just Maybe. I do miss the autograph pictures though.
