Located in McHenry Shopping Center alongside Bath & Body Works, Five Below, Cici's and a few other spots, The Game Trader is cool local game store that has all the games from classics, to nostalgia to new age. I popped in shortly before Christmas to scope a few games for my nephews and partner and was overwhelmed and impressed with the selection. The store itself brings back memories of the video/game stores of the 90's/2000's, so it was a trip down memory lane, especially with the old school TV's, posters and games of the past. I did not find what I was after, but had a good time wandering around. Service was friendly and helpful. Store was clean and in decent condition. Every time I've come in to this store there's been a crew of people who all seem to know the staff and their friendly to everyone. Today my ("fiancé )she edited this in) and I went in to by some Pokémon cards and I ended up buying a FF7 figurine box after talking with a staff member about them. A box with a random character inside. A staff member and I both bought one together and he ended up giving me his Sephiroth. Purely because he saw that I wanted it. Awesome retro game store! They have wide selection that ranges from more common titles all the way to rare and obscure glass case finds. The switch collection is very nice with titles you won't find at the big name game stores. There were also older gen consoles available at reasonable prices. However, the prices are generally higher than eBay so there's not really a reason to come here unless you don't want to wait for shipping (and are ok paying a premium). Came in to browse and look for a Gameboy Color for our Mario and Pokemon playing needs. Since they didn't have them in stock they suggested the Gameboy SP. We ended up getting the Gameboy Advance and deciding to return it for the SP (we realized the backlit display was definitely needed!) Associate let me exchange it for the Gameboy SP he originally suggested and did an even trade! I was baffled at that act of kindness as their was a $25 difference in the price! Staff was super knowledgable and not pushy whatsoever and helpful when we had questions about our purchases. Their inventory is decently priced and warranty valid 30 days. read more

Summary: Used video game nirvana. One of the things in any town I move to that a necessity in the mind of my kids is a used video game place where they can swap old games for games that are new to them. Game Trader is that. But, oh, dear child, Game Trader is so much more. When we walked in, I heard my eldest son gasp. There were games from every system that has ever been created. Atari 2600? Got it. 5200? It's there. Sega anything? Got it. There is something in this place for everyone. My oldest was overjoyed to find a rare Japanese import game. Both of the kids spent almost a full hour milling around and looking at the various options. Then the owner did something that sealed us as long term customers. My youngest son, who is autistic, was fixating on a Kirby game. He thought it was in a discount rack...but it was actually in the row above it. The cost difference was about 10 bucks. So the owner says he'll cut the difference. Son is happy with his new game. Bottom line: Great selection, great service....great place. read more

Very surprised no one has reviewed this establishment. One of the best game stores I've been in, and is the best in Nashville by far. Forget GameStop guys/gals. Game Trader has new games, used games, old games, and all in between. Xbox 360, PS3, Wii U... Game Trader got all the new stuff. But if you're a fan of vintage video games, you gotta go to this place! Go to the back of the store where the vintage systems are. They gotta Neo Geo for sale! They got old school Nintendo, Sega Genesis, Dreamcast, you name it. Any old system... and there are parts, games, etc for them. I have a Sega Dreamcast, and this is where I go for games and accessories. Just give it a chance, you'll love it. read more

Super cool place, tons and tons of games from current generation all the way back to NES & Sega. Awesome selection too, for example the PS2 stuff takes a whole wall and has a wide variety, not just a bunch of sports crap. For more recent stuff they have a better selection and better prices than GameStop for sure. For those complaining about prices, take a chill pill. This is a niche hobby and they are providing a great local spot to look for games. Yeah you can sit there and price check everything with your little cell phone, but when you need a game today this place is it. Good luck finding any of this stuff anywhere else in the area... For the collector, they have some rare gems here, nice games in the box and all. The guy seemed very happy to let people examine what they wanted, and was willing to haggle on prices. read more

I had called on the phone to ask if they had a copy of Digimon World for Playstation 1 in stock, and they did. Since PS1 games often don't play very well, I asked if the games are tested before being sold. Hesitation. So I asked if there was a refund policy. The answer was "we have a 30 day money back guarantee." So I bought it. It didn't work. I decided to just play the game on an emulator instead, being tired of bad PS1 discs. When I came in to return it a few days later, I was informed there are no refunds, only store credit. I explained my experience, including the words "money back guarantee" over the phone, but was denied the return in cash. To the store's credit, they do offer disc cleaning for these cases, but that was unfortunately of no help to me because I already committed to playing on an emulator, under the impression I'd be getting my money back. I took the store credit and bought Mario Party 2 with it. The guy was nice enough to mark it down $10 for my troubles, but the base price was already $50, so at $40, I wasn't feeling an incredible discount. Especially considering you can get a new copy of it on Ebay for $20. Overall, I just wanted the money back and was essentially forced to buy a game I didn't particularly want to buy, but was about the only thing I could pick. I do share some of the blame on these events; I should have read the policies myself and made sure of everything. Even so, the negatives are that there is no return policy, only store credit (which is risky for used games), and that things are quite over priced. The positives are that the staff is nice, and the collection is incredible, especially if you want to window shop. Overall though, I'd just buy somewhere with a return policy like Gamestop. And that's despite the fact that I'd prefer to shop at a smaller business. read more

Great place to look for vintage games. I have gotten a few rare collectible games here, though most everything is overpriced (or on par with average online pricing). There is a back case that serves as a small museum of retro games and collectibles. Everything is not always priced (visibly) though, so it's kind of a pain when browsing. Staff is always polite, extremely knowledgeable, and typically greets you as you enter. I feel sorry too, because 75% of the clientele they deal with are clueless to the point I don't see how they tie their own shoes. They sometimes run "buy 2, get 1 free" which makes for a fun shopping experience. If you're into collecting video games, definitely check this place out! read more

Games galore here! I would've bought a few things had they just been $5-$10 cheaper. They even had quite a haul of Sega Saturn games which are quite elusive. All in all, I'd definitely visit it again just wish they'd lower prices a tiny bit. read more

I've been going to this store since I was a little kid and it is , simply put, amazing. I'm a customer for life. They always have something unique ranging for the hottest new titles to the rarest retro games and consoles, and are always willing to help me out with whatever trade or purchase I'm making. They bend backwards to make sure you're completely taken care of and informed before you make your purchase. The guy named Chad that works there has been there as long as I can remember and always goes out of his way to make my shopping experience great. I'm an avid game collector (especially vintage and retro titles) and if they don't have what I'm looking for Chad will go above and beyond to find the game/ accessory I'm trying to get. I once was looking for a very specific pin converter so my imported Famicom games could run on my NES and he special ordered one and called me multiple times to make sure I knew it was in once it arrived. Talk about amazing customer service. All in all if you go anywhere else for your games you're missing out. It's an amazing selection, great atmosphere, friendly and helpful employees, and well worth any distance of travel to get there. You'll almost always find exactly what you're looking for and if they don't have it they'll make sure you get it. GAME TRADER IS THE BEST! read more

The prices here are outrageously high - you might as well go to Toys R Us and pay full price. Then you'd get something that isn't scratched up. First things first, when you walk in, you'd think with that musty smell grampa or his lackeys would get off their creaky rocking chair and would actually say hi to you. Instead they just stared at my butt while I looked for Mario Galaxy. There's no real organization to the store at all, and pricing is very ad hoc. All in all, a dumb store with an antiquated way of selling games that really doesn't even care about your business. They just want to rope in someone paying 10x above market rate for a neo geo game no one plays anymore. read more

Returned here recently to upgrade both my wife's and my 3DS handhelds from the original red, to 2 New Nintendo 3DS XLs. The staff is very knowledgeable and helpful. Let's start with the good. They'll let you haggle. That's better than Great Escape, though only on one front. Next, the bad. They charge too much. Additionally, the staff is unfriendly and clearly doesn't actually care for anything but making a sale, and I'm not even sure about that. I mean, these guys make Gamestop employees seem like fun people to be around. The gray-haired guy is at least not rude, but you can tell he doesn't want to talk to you and is eager to get back to his conversation with his buddy. The darker haired guy clearly does not want to interact until he is forced to communicate with a customer, and even then it's short answers that may or may not give sufficient detail. He didn't even attempt to greet me when I come in the store, and this was after a couple of years of repeatedly visiting the store and trying to form some sort of acquaintance with the staff. There was one occasion where he was giving really lame, vague information to a customer who was asking about Pokémon (an easy subject to answer, yet he didn't seem to even try) and when I offered the customer more details after he received a poor answer, the dark haired man became visibly cross. Needless to say, I gave a short answer, left, and have not revisited the location since. If they are not interested in having someone who will gladly give them regular business then they can continue to be impersonable. I think it would be good for the store if the dark-haired man was dismissed from the location and someone who is capable of actually speaking with people was hired in his place. I would sincerely consider going back if this happened. I did notice during my final visit, however, that they seemed to have hired a couple of new guys, though they didn't seem like anything more than the equivalent of GameStop's "Games Advisors", so I doubt that they replaced anyone. read more

What a joke, their trade in value on things makes gamestop in comparison appear to give golden eggs away. The staff have brusque almost surly attitudes when answering questions. The selection is okay, but for the ridiculous prices of some things I'd rather literally burn my trades for satisfaction than take what they offer. Avoid, go to Gamestop\Best Buy for new, Amazon exists for the very same reason jokes like this store barely survive, and fleece people to eke out their XBox live subscription.
