The Groove is a great place for new and used vinyl! This is the only queer owned record shop in Nashville. The staff and owners radiate friendliness, acceptance, and hospitality to all whom walk through the door. The shop is located on a side street in East Nashville, in what looks to be an old house. Therefore, parking is limited at times. I have come here 2-3 before, and they have a great selection of wide-stream music and local artists as well. The inside is filled with records and CD's filling shelves, bins, walls, and even the mantle of a fireplace. They also have a small stage and area to host events and live music inside. This year, We came here for Record Store Day 2024, and it was such a great event. We decided to come by around lunch time. They had vendors, food trucks, and live music set up around the shop. They were limiting the amount of people in the room with the RSD Titles; therefore, we waited in line for an hour to get into the store. That being said, this allowed for everyone to look through the bins leisurely. The staff and even the other customers were all so friendly! This is a cool place in east Nashville to come and get you some vinyl record... new and old. They also have CD's. They have bins with all genres and they also with different discounts all around. They have a section for the new and for the old and used. People at the store were friendly but quite and doing their thing. Music is playing in the background and it's not too loud. I can't believe it's taken me years to get to The Groove. Nashville is blessed with an abundance of fantastic music stores (duh) but finding a good one close(r) to home is key. I have driven all over the city before in search of specific items. Yes, it's true. I prefer to buy music I can hold. I like the feel of albums and CDs. I like to look at the cover art. I like to read the liner notes. I like to know that no matter how much music I buy, my cache will never be full and a blip can never wipe it out. Long live the music store. The setup here is very (East) Nashville: a repurposed home with interesting music playing once you walk in and non-pushy sales people doing their thing. I came in in search of all things Lizzo. Specifically, I was looking for Lizzobangers but I'd leave with anything related to the Juicy one. [Quick point of order: how I wish I'd listened to my Minneapolis friends years ago when Lizzo first came on the scene. That way, I could look down and scoff at all these bandwagoners rather than being one. Back to the review.] As I am wont to do, I went straight for the used pile and... whoa. This was a mess. A.Mess. Despite the appearance of alphabetical order, CDs were strewn about any which way. Truly, I felt my eyes crossing looking for things. I couldn't focus. I wished I'd brought my glasses. I'm not exaggerating. I backed up from the pile, allowed my eyes to refocus and changed the direction of my gaze. Rather than spending time in the bins, I attempted to look at the wall for gold. Again, chaos. I'm not that type A (compared to some other Type A psychos) but this was making me a bit batty. Thankfully, as I backed up from the wall, I saw the one copy of Cuz I Love You. The wrapping was in tact. It was $12.99. I grabbed it and claimed a victory. I asked the fellows behind the counter what they knew of the presence of any earlier Lizzo works. One of the guys came from behind the counter, pointed me in a new direction, looked with me some, and small talked about the music industry. Music shops can be intimidating. This fellow was not. He was friendly. I don't know what it says about [me/Nashville/music shops] that I was so taken aback by his sincerity but I was... and I appreciated it. He went back behind the counter and I knelt down to look in some of the hip-hop bins. Again with the disorganization. I decided to call it. I had a piece of what I was looking for and that was a win. For treasure hunters, The Groove is the jackpot. From vinyl to CDs to tapes, it has all your analog needs covered and there's a lot of product. I couldn't tell you, exactly, what it all was because of the aforementioned organizational challenges but isn't that part of the thrill of hunting? The stacks made me cross-eyed but the staff would bring me back. I'm a fan. read more

As a vinyl collector (or "junkie"), I've been to most of the Nashville record stores many times but for some reason haven't been to The Groove in years. My wife surprised me with a day out recently and started us out here with instructions that I could look as long as I want (while supportive of my hobbies, I know that my crate-digging is usually best done when I'm solo because "as long as I want" can be way too long for her!). I was glad she chose "The Groove" because I was reminded how great this location is. Small but well organized with friendly/knowledgeable staff. Being the Xmas season, it was cool that they had an in-store Krampus for picture opportunities! I walked out with several fairly priced used LPs (notably a great Peter Tosh album) and a couple from a markdown sale-bin ($15 for a missing title in my extensive Drive By Truckers collection!). Snagging approximately 6 LPS for less than $50 in this day and age was a pleasant surprise. I'll definitely add The Groove back to my quarterly crate-digging rotation. read more

Came here on a crate digging vacation in Nashville. They have a good selection of used records. And quite a few RSD releases. I did find a new record by Annie Lennox that was issued a few years ago so I was happy with that find. Overall I like The Groove because of its location in a house and for being an out of towner it was easy for me to find. read more

I finally made my way into The Groove on Record Store Day 2014 and was very pleased with the selection, service, entertainment, and 15% off promotion! I ended up scoring the Radio City - Big Star album for around $12. Not too shabby, right? I probably would have stocked up on much more but with all the crowds, I decided to lay low on this particular visit. What really stood out for me was how attentive the staff member was at the cash register and that they took the initiative to offer a sale price on this day. Look, I get that Record Store Day is crazy busy and that our independent record stores need to bank on this day, but it was refreshing to be greeted with friendliness and 15% off too. Located across the way from Barista Parlor, I am very much looking forward to a leisurely afternoon of tea, conversation, and digging through records very soon! read more

My first time coming here it took me forever to find it (thanks for nothing gps). I even found myself in Kroger asking employees if they'd heard of it. They looked at me with question marks in their eyes. That's too bad. I finally found it just behind the barista parlor. Fairly easy street parking available. Though the selection is big, I've left empty handed both times. Though I did see some solid deals on some classics (the soft parade- $9.99), it was few and far between. When you see the amount of records this store holds in such a small space you will think surely you will find something. My other complaint is that it's so hard to even look through the records because they are so jam packed. When you get to the back rows it's damn near impossible for a person of average height. If you do pick one up to look it's like you have to jam it back in. Kind of see this leading to poorer treatment of vinyl than I'd like. The staff seems friendly and knowledgeable. I hate when I'm the only one in somewhere and feel like I must leave with something. But I'm sure they understand. This record store isn't bad by any means, it's on par with the Nashville scene. So I just popped in down at the Groove to see if they have the latest Witch album. Unfortunately, the manufacturer didn't foresee the band selling quite so well and thus didn't produce enough CDs to appease this psych rock band's growing fan base. The staff, however, was kind enough to give me their info and inform me of a tentative date as to when they expect my CD in. And that's more or less the general vibe--or groove--you get at this brand new little record joint. While their selection of new and used vinyl is relatively eclectic and extensive, new CDs are somewhat limited. I enjoyed their modest selection of art and music literature and DVDs. They have the Director's Series, which features separate volumes of the works of Michele Gondry, Spike Jonze, Mark Cunningham and the like, and they have several pop culture books dedicated to topics like street art and the punk movement. If you're a vinyl junkie, you'll probably be satisfied perusing their selection for an hour or two, and that (coupled with their friendly staff and neat little lounging area) convinced me to give the Groove four stars. Besides, it's about time someone put in a record shop in Five Points. However, I'm personally more of a digital guy (crucify me if you must), and their CD selection just wasn't up to snuff with other indie shops in the Nashville area (Grimey's for instance). read more

I hadn't been in the Groove so I stopped in with a friend one day to check it out. It's fine. It doesn't have a huge selection, but I did think they had a good variety of used cd's which is what I'm usually after. Four stars because they help out local musicians and stock their cd's. Big points for that. They also have a friendly staff ready to help out, and the store is clean and well organized. Other than that, well I guess if a store doesn't have a specific cd or record you're after, you would certainly be upset and dock them some points. Guess I'm usually just looking to browse and see what moves me. For some reason, I remember being impressed with their selection of dance music. I'll stop back in when I'm in the neighborhood to see how they're doing. It's probably time East Nashville had a Grimey's over there, right? read more

Good shop but not great. Cool location in an old house on the east side of town and very nice, helpful staff, but the selection and design of the record racks would be reason it just as OK instead of great. I spent a long time in there today looking through all the sections but not nearly enough used vinyl. much of the used vinyl sections were full of new obscure titles I presume they could not sell so they marked them down and put them with the used LPs. Not a lot of big names at all. No Queen. No Zepplin, No Genesis. No Van Halen. No Kiss (except 1 beat up album without a cover at all...). No Pink Floyd. No Petty. No Prince. No Eagles. No Fleetwood Mac. No Simon Garfunkel, No Paul Simon. No Dave Matthews. No Metallica. No Bob Dylan. No CSN. No Beatles. No Paul McCartney. No John Lennon. No Elton John. No Billy Joel. No Frank Sinatra. No AC/DC. No REM. so many others that were just not represented at all... but they had lots of other random bands and new stuff I had never heard of. Also while I am not the tallest guy, I really struggled to get to the back of their double deep record racks. Not an easy dig at all... and especially disappointing after working my butt off to dig for a couple hours stretched out across the deep racks, only to find nothing special. I did find a couple older comedy albums but otherwise, nothing that will make me want to drive across town again anytime soon for. If you are in the East Side already and like obscure indie bands or new vinyl, this is for you. :) read more

Pretty great record store in a house with creaky wood floors and awesome air conditioning. I haven't had an optical drive in many years, so CD's are thoroughly uninteresting to me. But there was a surprising selection of CD's (and vinyls) here to fit many tastes. They also have a ton of updated resources for live shows going on in the area. There's nothing too obscure or rare. It's a used (and oftentimes new) record store, and if you want some Decemberists live show or random Beirut or Bob Dylan or System of a Down (eek), then you know where to find it. To relive our weepy, poetic years with Sigur Ros and trying to find spiritual freedom, come here. As we were on a road trip at the time, we obviously had a vital need for Destiny's Child or TLC. But the hip hop/R&B selection is more limited. :( Worth a visit as a tourist? Okay, maybe not, unless you're looking for road trip music. It's just a record store. read more

Summary: It's not bad. Not great either. I stopped at The Groove solely because of its Yelp listing a few of the good reviews that popped up on the app. I love doing business with small indie record stores and I perked up to see the store inside an older home on a quiet side street. Unfortunately, my perkiness faded as I saw the selection. There's not a lot of quality used vinyl in the store if you're looking in the rock or pop genres. Really, there's not much there at all and I wondered at times where they found some of the albums in the racks. I've been in radio 30 years and never heard of some of the bands in the racks of this store. The guy working there was very nice and obviously had a passion for music. It's a store that I won't be putting on my "must visit" list for when I take a day to hit the stores to look for items to add to my collection. The depth of what I found inside the store just wasn't there. However, I can see myself popping in every 3-4 months just to see if somehow a golden nugget fell through the cracks. Bottom line: Probably a destination if you have some quirky favorite that never made it big and you're looking for an obscure album. read more

This store seems to have changed location since the pictures that are up here were taken. It's now located in a cool little house on the outskirts of a residential neighborhood. It's much sunnier (there are several windows) and has a nice warm vibe that is not typical to record stores....most have one window up front and fluorescent lighting! Not here. Instead of a thick cloud of dust & dank smell...there's the aroma of some nice Indian incense. There is Vinyl and CD's in the store, but my focus is on the vinyl only. What I found was a nice selection of Funk, Soul, Jazz that was in very good cond and priced very moderately. There was a small selection of Disco and Hip-Hop 12" singles....mostly Hip-Hop. There was also a good selection of new modern Hip-Hop LP's. There was a large selection of Rock & Indie Rock that I did not look thru, but seem to get a good bit of traffic from the local clientele. As a side note, there is a back room that is supposedly full of House records if that's your bag. I'd rather be here than with the rude 'too cool for school' hipsters that run Grimey's. These guys make you feel welcome and answer any and all questions. Only place I buy vinyl. read more

I'll get some dirty looks here, but where Grimey's makes me feel overwhelmed with selection, this place makes me feel calm. It's just a lot easiter for me to shop around in here, but I still maintain Grimeys has the best (i.e. larger) selection. I felt like this place had a much bigger blues vinyl selection, and to my husband, this is huge. I saw the huge children's section and had high hopes to find the Charlie Brown Christmas album on vinyl but had no luck. Maybe next time. Another thing I love about the place with the free band stickers up front. They have some of the most super soft tshirts for sale, and will be back for one of those someday. I ruined my shirt from a record store in VA and have pretty much been in mourning since. read more

Whoa, such an improvement! I stopped in on Saturday for their Dre Day party and it rocked my Toms off. Their new location is perfect, the house has a charm to it. The old spot was almost too big for them. So for Dre Day they had a band playing instrumental hits from you guessed it Dr. Dre! This was in honor of his birthday. They also had 40's, brown bags and koozies. They band was really good, not that I was surprised, this is Nashville. After about 2 and a 1/2 hours we walked out with Snoop, Shabazz Palaces, Band of Horses and some random $4 album on vinyl. The hip hop section is actually quite good. They also have a record player so you can listen to the used albums before purchasing. I will definitely be back, especially if they keep hosting events like Dre Day. read more

I thought if I ever wanted it I'd have to settle for discogs...well, The Groove had it! The Groove is a new record shop in East Nashville right off of the Five Points intersection. It is about time a hip indie record shop moved into the Five Points area! The shop is really really clean, has an awesome selection of vinyl, a decent selection of new cds, lots of indie rock, beats, dance, and a lot of other weird rare treats that you always can count on at a good record shop. They also have a selection of local artists which is a definite must in Nashville. They do in-store performances, for example on this year's annual "record store day" they put on performances all day from DJ's and bands. They also act as a ticket outlet for some venues in town. They didn't get big celebrity appearances like Grimey's yet, (Grimey's had Elvis Costello in-store yesterday!). But, with time this little shop will carve its own niche like Grimey's has. All my friends complain that the shop is still too clean to be classified as cool. This is hilarious, but they are used to shopping at "the Great Escape" so a certain layer of dust has come to be expected. So with some time, and some dirt they will begin to accept the Groove as cool. I went in just to hang around some records and ended up picking up the new "Bat for Lashes" album. I love a few tracks on this album, some of them are really great, others are just great. read more

East Nashville really needed a record/CD store, badly. I'm glad The Groove is there to fill the void. You will find many of the local staples available at Grimeys and Great Escape, some good used records, and a reasonable selection of new release vinyl. I didn't see anything really out of the ordinary though, and I believe that each record store should find one thing only they can do best. I looked for some bands that are not on indie labels, but aren't particularly popular in the U.S. and I didn't find any of the things I was looking for. If you're into what I tend to call "mainstream indie" (I love the irony of that name and I think it's highly appropriate) you will find most of what you need here, but don't look for anything super unusual. I did like the selection of handbags, and I thought it was cool that a store with such a manly vibe had them. read more

Located in East Nashville's 5 Points area, the Groove is another one of Nashville's great independent music stores. Now that Backs and Tracks has closed, it's really the only place on that side of town to pick up some tunes (besides Cat's Music that is, but local is usually better when it comes to a lot of things including music). The Groove deals majorly in vinyl, but they also sell CDs as well. There's a pretty good selection here with more of an emphasis on used items, but it can't really be compared to Grimey's (that's pretty stiff competition though). Their space is large and inviting, there's always something cool playing on their stereo and their staff helpful but keep to themselves mostly. There's a small sitting area which is a nice place to relax and flip through one of the magazines they sell. The staff posts their musical suggestions, which I find interesting to read, and there are typically a lot of cool flyers and schwag for local bands here. Like Grimey's, they even occasionally put on intimate shows here, although these shows are infrequent and feature local bands only. They have a small parking lot next to their building in the middle of 5 points, and I've never really seen this place get busy. Overall, it is a nice store to check out if you're in the area, but Grimey's is definitely your better pick for selection and price. read more

The thing about Grimey's is, they have SO MUCH good music that it's impossible to browse through all of it, let alone select just a few albums to buy. For indecisive people like me, The Groove is a good place to shop for new and used records and CDs. I think the used sections might actually be bigger than the new sections, which is unusual. I saw some tempting Dylan and Elvis Costello records, but ended up getting sucked into the super-discount CD section in the sitting area, and picking out a few of those. The Groove has a CD player and turntable for listening before you buy, and the staff was friendly enough. I like the spaciousness and the minimal look of the store - painted concrete floors, posters tastefully hung on (but not covering every inch of) the walls, lots of windows, and a welcoming sitting area where you can flip through some of their books or make final your final decisions (yes, even here you still have to face some of those) about what to purchase. However, if you're looking to spend hours poring over a huge collection of new or obscure albums, you're better off going to Grimey's. read more

It's like a super affected college radio station blew up in this place. The Groove sells new and used vinyl and cds (and I think that there's a few dvds in the place too). It's definitely geared toward music snobs, described as "vinyl connoisseurs" on their web site. They've got an ecclectic selection of and vinyl, that's often experimental, and usually obscure. But, their goods are probably not easy to find elsewhere. The cd selection also felt somewhat limited, and reflected many of the same interests as the vinyl. Unfortunately, it seems like the Groove comes off as only wanting to cater to a specific niche market. While they want to promote an open and inviting experience, it doesn't come off that way...the staff/owners would be wise to make the selection (or at least what's shown in the front of their store) a little more accessible to the average customer (I'm not saying that they should start stocking Dave Matthews live at Red Rocks, or anything crazy like that). But, their location at 5 Points is great, and they'll likely get a lot of foot traffic, so why not take advantage of it? If you're looking for good, hard to find, and somewhat obscure music, the Groove is probably for you. I like the concept and I want to see them succeed, so I'll keep going back to see how their selection changes over time. read more

Tapes, CD's, and 7"s are always reasonably priced and the staff will always special order what they don't have in stock for you with no questions asked. Finally saw some bands here this week, nice space, good acoustics or at least my ears said so, two rooms to watch the band from, so if you stand at the back not deafening. Free and bring your own beer, jim beam, sandwiches, cakes etc. Door step to lollygag on. Lots of vinyl and Cd's inside...memo to self must go back for that 33 cent Harold Melvin Vinyl. Cool spot for sure with potential, but the problem lies in their lack of quality used product. It's a small store with a lot of records for the space but just nothing great on the vintage side of things, in any genre. When I visit stores around the country I always check the wall first because you'd expect to see a nice variety the store's best stuff there. Nope. Just new issues. The new arrivals section (nice they had one) was my next stop, but nothing else really interesting there either. I looked at it all - rock, soul, jazz, reggae, Latin and other world music - but there was only run of the mill filler stock and it was mostly low quality that has been sitting there a long time. They did have a crate of about 50 higher quality records beside the cash register but with outrageous prices for what they are. I'm not hating on the store or the people because they were friendly. I'd just tell you if you are a collector with any sort of significant collection visiting Nashville wanting to check out a used record store in hopes of finding something good, you will likely walk away empty handed. If you live in Nashville and are buying new modern issue records this place will probably work out fine for you. read more

First visit to this store while on business in Nashville. TONS of vinyl new and used! Super friendly guys that own the store that are willing to help you find something at all times. Pricing is fair for the quality of the used vinyl (that's all I buy!), while the condition of the vinyl is very good. Bought first press mono "The Outer Limits" by the Marketts that featured many of the famed LA studio session artists of the 1960's from the Wrecking Crew (Carol Kaye on bass, Glenn Campbell on guitar, Hal Blaine on drums, Plas Johnson on sax, Bill Pitman and many others).
