We drove an hour away in traffic to see Pricey Diggs play here. It was our first time, and it was so fun. Meeting new people, enjoying, dancing. Love how we can bring in our own food from one of the places around here. We are not alcohol drinkers, but what's nice is they have non alcoholic selections. The view of Lake Washington is gorgeous especially as the sun goes down on a summer afternoon. Wish this place was closer to our home, but I guess we will come back if someone we really want to see is playing here. Maybe one day my hubby and I will play here. read more

I walked into an empty establishment last afternoon and browsed their respectable wine selection. The gentleman behind the counter was more interested in his phone than greeting me and I had to repeat myself numerous times to get my questions answered. Needless to say, a really bad start. When my friend showed up, we ordered wine and despite asking for suggestions, he was unhelpful. The glass of wine he poured me was clearly corked. So clearly, this gentleman was checked out. Over the next hour, the place started to fill up. The ambiance was friendly and laid back. It is clearly a local watering hole and the locals were very friendly. One of the locals was also an ex-employee and she asked about my wine. After smelling the glass, she agreed that it was clearly corked and bad. She quickly wanted to do the right thing but we had already decided to move on. She also described the place as 'Cheers' but with wine. Overall, if the gentleman was more engaged, I would have purchased a few bottles of wine and we would have stayed for a second glass instead of moving onto another established to continue our conversation. Apparently, my experience was not the norm and a number of people that I've spoken with tell me that the place owned by a woman and her husband. Everyone has said that she is awesome! Okay...the outdoor space is essential for sunny days! I walked by with a friend, looking for a place to drink some wine, and we decided to try it. You order wine inside and then seat yourself, so it can get busy and hard to find an open spot. I hovered around for like 10 mins and grabbed a table once a group left. They do serve some small cheese plates, but you can order food from other restaurants and eat it on the patio so we ordered Zeeks pizza to eat with our wine. This place has a lot of pros and cons for me. I always end up going in the nicer months when I can sit outside with my dog because it is a beautiful spot to watch the Kirkland waterfront and there is plenty of seating. There usually is a modest selection to choose from for glass pours and a slightly larger bottle list (with corkage fees). I find that the crowd here is usually a bit older than other places in Kirkland, which isn't a bad thing, just something to consider. I have always felt that it was a little hard to get the staff's attention when I go inside. I definitely wouldn't go on a cold day when I would have to sit inside as it is a bit crowded. Not in love with the selection or ambiance, but I will keep going back as I appreciate the outdoor seating, location, and dog friendliness. read more

This place was a wonderful surprise for my husband and I today. We have recently been trying to upgrade our small liquor cabinet from its current rather boring contents that have been sitting in there for the past two years or so: a half-used bottle of Smirnoff Vodka, cheap prosecco, cheaper raspberry syrup, one bottle of fairly decent chardonnay that I have enjoyed when having a friend or two over, and a couple of uninteresting wines that have sat there unopened for months. This place is gorgeous and classy, with friendly service, friendlier fellow customers, and an impressive selection of wines. There are wines sorted by their country of origin - France, Italy, etc, wines sorted by rarity/uniqueness, wines sorted by white/red, etc. At first, we planned on just buying one bottle of an appealing, rare wine. We picked up a bottle of Piolet 2018 Rose of Grenache, bottled in the nearby city of Snohomish, Washington. Prices were very reasonable, and this bottle of wine was no exception. We felt happy with our wine choice, and we were about to leave satisfied. On our way towards the door, we spotted the sweetest Spaniel dog and another very sweet dog (unsure of the breed - very large dog, dark brown in color, short-to-medium-length fur, floppy ears, and very gentle spirit). The dogs were peacefully resting on the floor. The dogs really added a lot of charm to an already charming environment. Then when we passed a long row of fellow Seahawks fans slightly older than us, the friendly fan on the end of the row said "Hey! Pull up a chair and watch the game with us!" We immediately obliged. There were 3 minutes and 22 seconds left in the 4th quarter, and the Hawks were ahead by ONE point, so it looked like a pretty fun and exciting game to catch the end of. We decided not to open our bottle of wine for the short time left in the game, so I ordered a glass of the house white wine - I'm not a wine connoisseur by any means, but it was literally one of the best wines I've ever tasted. My husband ordered a glass of the house red wine - his wine was called "Secret Squirrel"! Seriously one of the greatest names for a wine that I have ever heard! We really liked the people in this place. They were great. It was a unique experience for us to watch the game in a much more subdued environment than the typical loud and boisterous sports bar. I've had fun watching games at loud and boisterous sports bars before with large groups of friends & acquaintances, but I really enjoyed this different speed today. People still got really into the game (including us :) ), but it was a quieter, more intimate feel. We felt very included right away, and we'd never met anyone there until today. That was a nice experience to have. We really liked everything about our experience there. If we go back there for another Seahawks game, we'll be sure to wear our Hawks clothing. Almost everyone there today was fully decked out in navy, neon green, and/or Hawks-specific attire. One lovely lady was wearing the most amazing neon green ballet flats! Great experience. Tucked behind Kirkland's downtown marina, it may be overlooked. Cute wine shop, a huge selection, the owner said he liked to support local wineries, especially some little ones. They also have a refrigerated section and a tasting area. I went to the tasting bar, there were about 6 wines- 3 white, 3 red and maybe a special. The tastes ranged from $3-4 and glasses were from $8-11. I said I liked reds- Pinot Noir and Malbec and asked what he recommended I try- he had a Cab from Yakima valley that he said was lighter. Had a glass of that and people watched. There is a menu with standard bar fare- cheese plate, charcuterie, pretzels... This place has been around for over 20yrs, so it has its regulars. I personally loved that. The owner was busy putting stuff away, but was helpful when I had questions and gave me this winery guide when I asked about wineries in a certain WA region- score! Some of the regulars happen to be their two adorable dogs! So it is pet friendly. read more

When we walked in we were welcomed by two gold retrievers! This was one of the best parts about our visit. The Rose was perfect. Small bar/tasting area but a very good selection of wines from all over the world. From what I can tell the folks that hangout here are regulars and close nit. A huge bonus, they have a great selection of beers for those who don't or want to drink wine. If you're lucky the sweetest dogs will greet you. One of them is named Rhône. These guys have given off a great vibe one way or another for quite a while now. It's always been abundantly clear that they're doing cool things and they're doing them all the way right, but I had never actually come in and plunked down my money (or anyone else's) until last night. First off, this place situates itself well, apart a bit from the madding crowd. It's got a great Lake Washington view, and it's strung right in along the whole Marina waterfront. But it doesn't play host to the chattering hordes that you see up at The Slip (speaking of...wasn't it not too long ago that The Slip was a place for a *quiet* drink? Am I misremembering this altogether?). It's down on ground level on the edge of the parking lot, with a recessed patio where you can sit and sip. Foremost, though, this place is a wine store. It's decorated like a nice wine cellar, which gives its merchandising approach some real balance. You certainly can't hope to court sufficient business in this part of the 425 without acknowledging the upscale demographic, but you don't want to just mindlessly spend money decorating the store. That will make some people wonder how much of the sticker price is for the wine, and how much is for your furniture. So they strike the perfect balance by stacking up wooden wine cases and other things you see in wine cellars in tony homes. Mostly stuff that seems like something you would get with a purchase at a winery you frequent. It gives the store some dimension and presence without distracting from the wine. And, man, there's a lot of wine. Beautifully laid out, almost all of it interesting. If you really like, you can see a couple box wines on the floor in a corner here and there, but there are tons of fantastic things, and tons more things that must be fantastic but I'd never heard of them, and have forgotten all the names already. I've always heard that these guys do a great job hosting tastings, and I've been to a homebrew club meeting here in their upstairs tasting room, which is really nice. Just like downstairs, it's a great balance of informality and seriousness of intent in a fairly relaxed and unpretentious setting. It was so cool of them to open the upstairs to us, and I've always wanted to come back as a customer. Glad I finally did. They have an ongoing program of wines by the glass, which appear to rotate now and then. Tried a couple things last night which were both overly sweet for the style (priorat and prosecco). That's probably a well-considered business decision on their part, though. Likely they sell a number of glasses of wine to people who just want something yummy. If I understood him correctly, though, they will uncork anything that catches your eye and pour it for you. You can drink inside, or out on the patio. Inside, you get the company of the affable host of the proceedings, as well as Akita the wooly hound. Outside, you get a little oasis of calm in the middle of Kirkland's nattering waterfront scene. There's a restaurant next door that offers table service to the patio, which is a great touch. There's also a neighborhood psychic with a flair for guerrilla marketing, if the business card left under my windshield wiper is any indication. Other than the occasional trivia night at the Wilde Rover, this section of Kirkland has a pretty hard time justifying (for me) its traffic and parking hassles. But if and when it happens not to be crowded (i.e., if it's not a gorgeous summer night), you could certainly do worse than a glass of wine at the Grape Choice. read more
