James is a master at his craft. Had a mishap with a one year new MacBook Pro screen. James replaced…read morethe screen and being technical myself I was concerned about Apple's lockdown, anti right to repair behaviour and part pairing. This requires certain work around to be able to achieve full functionality of the replaced part. For example, the display control chip and the code chip need to be removed from the old screen and re soldered to the new one. Upon receiving the laptop, from what I can see, True Tone, ambient light sensors and front facing camera are working.

What to do when Apple has a defective product, does a secret repair service and does not tell you…read moreabout it until your unit gets affected and they have already closed the secret program? Well you can go see a genius and have them tell you that they need close to $1000 to fix it. I think not! I decided to find a good component level repair person. I did a bunch of looking around and decided to call James Wu at Unitak Laptop Repair. After communicating with him over email, I decided to trust my MacBook Pro15 Retina to him and also took my MacBook Air 11 as well. I've suffered a lot of Apple Loss this year. An iPad lost it's wifi and iPhone7 lost it's microphone (Apple, in an internal memo agreed to fix their blunder but decided not to do it after all - check out MacRumors site about it) and the aforementioned notebooks. Ugh...these things didn't really happen with Jobs was on the job! James agreed to meet me at the Parkway Shoppes store which he rents a room at K&J Camera Services. The little room cluttered with notebook pieces and equipment littered everywhere had me a little uneasy but after a quick talk with him and witnessing how quickly he broke down the the 15" notebook and tested it - I knew I came to the right place. He told me that the graphics chip wasn't gone and proceeded to explain the process. I asked him to proceed and also asked him to replace the screen on the Air 11. As quick as I was checking my phone for messages and such, he took the whole Air apart and replaced the screen with a spare unit he had. I think it took a whole 15mins to do that repair. I left the Pro with him and the next day, I got back the notebook as if nothing had happened to it. He was really fair with his prices and I now have a place to get all my notebooks serviced for me and my clients. I got both notebooks repaired for HALF of repairing just ONE! Don't bother with the Genius Bar - where they want you to replace the whole circuit board (easy repair), take it to the True Genius at Unitak! Anyone who knows me professionally knows that I am not easily impressed by tech peeps. I am very impressed with James. CHEERS!

I always fear going into computer and car shops because I know absolutely nothing about the things…read moreI use every day and am so reliant on. So knowing nothing, except for Google/YouTube help, one could up sell me anything, especially car repairs as I've experienced in the past. Luckily this repair was a good experience . The owner Glen, is a super chill guy, he practically lives here with his shop hours being so broad. This is his retirement hobby, from being a computer engineer, so he really seems to know a lot and is not pushy or trying to sell me more than I needed. I had dropped my all in one HP computer while it was running, onto my leg and it broke it inside. He said it would take 1-2 days to figured out if the problem was 1 of 2 things. Software reinstall was $89 plus tax(which ended up being my issue) or a hardware fix being south of $200. The shop sits right off of Yonge st just a walk north of Major Mackenzie, it's mainly street parking unless you park behind the plaza or the church. I drive by here often and have never noticed this place, but it's been here for years.

After a number of emails, they contradicted themselves and obviously didn't read what I wrote. Called but their landline has been disconnected. A bad sign. I got their cell #. All the guy would say is "our policy is", no matter what I said. In other words I have your money, tough. He was rude and aggressive. I have dealt with lots of tech companies over last 30 years+ of using digital equipment. Worst and most unhelpful place ever. Terrible experience. Do not buy from them. If you have a problem you will be stuck with it. I will now contact Zagg and see if they will be of any help.
