My last hair cut was by a charming frenchman in Montreal, but I could no longer ignore my split ends. Seeing that he was half a country away, I figured I ought to track down a skilled stylist here. On the basis of some very positive reviews right here on Yelp!, I decided to take the plunge. I'm super vain about my hair, so getting it cut is a big deal for me. I was super pleased with Stacey, my stylist, and with the whole salon. First of all, I came in early and they were super polite and talked about getting me in ASAP. I got hooked up with some delicious tea in the small waiting area, enjoying the atmosphere. It was very open concept, chic and open, and it didn't feel crowded at all. Love, love loved how gorgeous the interior was, which is exactly what I want in a salon. Loved getting my hair washed, although I was a little disappointed with the lack of scalp massage :( Stacey asked what I wanted, and totally consulted with me the whole time. She also listened to me chatter along the whole time. I love my one-inch shorter hair (I also like it when people listen to me when I explain that I'm growing my hair out). I adore my new hair cut, and while it wasn't cheap it was definitely worth it. Also, their pricing is comparable to most major salons anyways. And my hair remains wonderful. Perfect. read more

Fabulous salon! A girlfriend and I were headed to Calgary to celebrate my birthday weekend and during our drive we decided we wanted blowouts in order to look our most spectacular for our night on the town. The Ginger Group was the first salon to pop up on Google and the receptionist was happy to get us in that afternoon (which came to a surprise quite frankly, because it was a Saturday, after all). Once we arrived we were kindly greeted and met by our stylists right away. Unfortunately, I forgot the name of the gentleman who tended to my messy locks... but he did have a station right next to another gentleman who, to our excitement, frequently had his bow-tie-wearing weiner dog roam the salon. That was a cute touch. The space itself, was perfect also, with its lofty vibe and industrialized pieces. I, personally love a laid-back environment without the snobbery that comes with certain uptight salons. My girlfriend showed up with her hair drenched in coconut oil from the night before, and was extremely worried about being judged by her stylist due to the fact she too, had worked in a salon with women who were umempathetic toward clients behind their backs. Our stylists were phenomenal. The female who worked on my friend was super understanding about the oil and casually chatted her up about our plans for the evening. As did my stylist. They were both kind, informative, and talented professionals. Our hair looked fabulous the entire night and carried all the way into the following day. Sorry folks, I didn't like this place... I went in there a few months back as my usual place ( see my review on Bromley Square which will explain my choice to use a barber) was not available. I thought "what the heck, I'll treat myself". This was no treat. Perhaps it was the day I was there, but I had my hair cut by a girl who was clearly disinterested in cutting my hair. I tried to engage the girl in conversation, you know the kind you have with your stylist.... fairly banal but pleasant. This girl was sullen and miserable. Worse yet were the 2 other male staff that were a chair away leaning against the back wall, whispering to each other and chatting... I got the distinct feeling that they were commenting on clientele and other staff. The whole scenario was bitchy and unpleasant, and incredibly unprofessional. I asked the girl for as much texturing in hair as possible. I ended up with all I can call is a #3 brush cut. yikes. I am not big on attitude, or people who dont treat others with kindness and basic courtesy...My quiet and kindly barber who I normally see understands all of that... and that is something that you cannot put a price on. My haircut cost me double what I would normally pay, which I was prepared for. I wasnt prepared for the unprofessional behavior of staff, apathetic work of the stylist and attitude. Bringing new customers in the door of any business in this economy is a good thing... losing them is not. I wont return. read more

After an everlasting debate and frustration with long hair, I decided to have it hacked off. Usually I go to an Angles close to my house where I absolutely love and trust my stylist there. I decided to go to the Ginger Group instead this time after my boyfriend told me how great the place was. I was a little apprehensive in going as I had enough experiences of going to nice salons to only have the hair stylist destroy my hair. However I booked the appointment over the phone with Jay. Unfortunately most salon and spas that are housed in the Calgary downtown district have gained the reputation of being unwelcome and snotty - even if they give great service. The Ginger Group though manages to bash that reputation down welcoming customers with open arms. With abstract art work and staff in casual clothing the place exudes an atmosphere that is down to earth. Jay was charming and had excellent knowledge of hair. Although she wasn't the most talkative, I felt no need to fill in the silence as Jay was extremely relaxing to be around where it wasn't awkward or stiff. In the end, Jay did an absolutely fabulous job in taking off 10 inches of my hair to a medium length style, where i love my new hairdo. The prices at the Ginger Group are quite reasonable where it ranges from 40$-60$ for women, depending on the expertise of the stylist. Having had a great first-time experience at the Ginger Group, I would definitely visit it again on other occasions. read more

As per my girl Lindsay K.'s review, I recently made my way over to the good people of The Ginger Group. Do y'all remember what I said about being REAL picky as to who I let touch my locks? Well I'll have you know I had NO PROBLEM putting my absolute faith into the stylist that I got assigned - Kevin. You know what I LOVED most about Kevin? The fact that he wasn't all up in my business. He was extremely professional, asked me what I wanted done, made a couple of recommendations when I asked him for them, and was well on his way. He didn't jibber-jabber my ear off or make me feel like I was on an episode of 20 Questions. He is a man of few words I tell ya, but he is a true master of his art. It's not often that I shriek with excitement when the hairstylist spins me around to face the mirror. I was ECSTATIC with the job that Kevin did. It was PERFECT. I recommend The Ginger Group to ANYONE out there who is looking for a great hair cut, a great hair stylist and a great experience. Went to get my hair cut today, tried a new salon and was quite happy, 5 stars from so many folks let me add to the mix. I got an appointment the same day that I called and you are paying 40 to 60 which is more reasonable than 100. The space is easy to find and parking is on the street and the location is an open space concept with stations in the front for the senior hairstylists and an area in the back for the juniors. Price depends on their status but both groups are more than capable to pimp up your look The place is sparkling with good vibes, and tunes and a disco ball hanging in the center of the ceiling. My hair stylist was charming and funny and he recommended a hair style that worked really well for me, he got right into it and within 30 minutes I was done. Pretty happy with my cut and I would return again. I am sassy and fashion forward and now have a new revitalised and sexy persona. read more

Ginger Group is probably the hippest, most entertaining hair salon I've ever been to. Every hair dresser is so much fun and really makes it a point to get to know their clients. It's an energizing experience every time you go, plus you look good when you leave. All the hair dressers are extremely professional and very well-trained. A couple of the younger stylists went through their training right at the salon. Each stylist has their own fashion and is very unique, interesting people. Whoever you get, you're sure to meet an appealing personality and have a couple of good conversations. The place itself is very large and has many stylists working at any given time. As soon as you walk in you'll know it's going to be fun. There's always some club-type music playing loudly around the salon, and the stylists and juniors are all dancing around. I'd go there just for the socializing aspect of the trip. I also go because my hair always looks so great when I leave... if only I could style it as nicely as them! Their prices are a little high, but you pay for quality service. If you don't want to spend a ton of money on your hair, you can always book with one of the junior stylists - who work for less when they're first starting out. Now don't think that just because you're getting your hair cut by a junior that it's not going to be as top quality as if someone else cut it. Like I said, every worker there is extremely well-trained and very passionate about hair. Ginger Group is just a fun place to go have your hair done for the afternoon. It's difficult for me to find a great stylist but Joey hits the mark. I'm fairly easy-going with my hair (I have 3 simple rules & I let stylists go wild otherwise) but they all tend to do the same thing over and over again. However, Joey manages to take one glance and know exactly what I need - and the scary part is that I TRUST HIM! The salon is fun and funky, everyone is friendly. It's a very relaxed atmosphere. I enjoy visiting. The only slight drawback is the price, but it's comparable to other salons and bound to happen when looking for great service and results. After my cut & highlights, I've had countless compliments, and two people have asked where I go & who did my hair. I'd call this a win! read more

I went here on a whim- thinking I could get something cheaper than Red Bloom Salon. Got an appointment on the same day I called with Rosie who I think may be the owner...anyway she was very lovely and easy to make conversation with. However it must be me- but I get weirded out when people sit to cut hair- how do they know it's even if they can only see half of my head? I am not sure. The cut cost more then Red Bloom in the end and my hair grew in a little strange. There was nothing wrong with my appointment but nothing to make me say "Wow I can't wait to go back." read more

It was my first time going to this salon. Overall was a great experience. Salon was very nice, loved the setup and decor. My stylist was a junior stylist named Nathan and he was the sweetest person. He listened, made small conversations, nothing intrusive yet had light convo going. He also understood what I wanted and delivered. I would totally go back to him again. I found the price very reasonable as well. He didn't make me wait past my appointment time. I was a little nervous in the beginning bc I wasn't referred and I picked this salon out of many and I have had bad experiences in the past but midway I was very relaxed. I dont know if it was a one off day or what but my experience was terrible. I paid $80 for a trim that I could of easily done myself and was not impressed with the quality of service for the price. I've been to many salons and grew up with talented family members cutting my hair so I can tell what's up and what to look for in a quality cut. I don't hold everyone to crazy standards but the are a few things I expect when I'm paying such a big price and basic customer service is an essential must in any business. I walk in and see a few stylists doing there thing with their clients. I say hello and they nod and carry on. I sit there for 10 mins without anyone asking if I have an appointment. 5 mins after the time I had booked my appointment, a stylist comes in after walking their dog outside and asks if I'm her client and after saying yes she says she'll be a few minutes. As she heads to the back the front counter girl finally comes out front and asks if I'm here for an appointment and we go through the greeting and getting ready process finally after 15minutes of no one talking to us and being 5 minutes later already for my appointment. When I'm finally in the chair and I tell the stylist what I'm looking for she seems to not be there mentally and almost high. I'm pro cannabis but there is a time and place to smoke but I don't know if that was indeed the case. I ask for a trim plus layers, texture and shaping of the face, pretty simple for most other people I've been to in the past. I like it shaggy. As I'm watching her, she seems to be combing my hair for 10 minutes straight in the same place over and over...She ends up just trimming the front of my hair while the back still has crazy split ends. Then another 10 minutes of combing and she razors just the ends at one length to give texture even though I asked for different layers of texture. While I was in the chair she would try to engage in conversation even though I was not interested in talking at all as I prefer to be quiet during my treatments which she didn't seem to get. By the end of the treatment my hair still had plenty of split ends, no layers, my face was not shapped and I just wanted to leave. I felt cheated out of my money and time. I will not be going back and I hope the owner or manager sees this because this will ruin their business and deter clients away. read more

I recently had an appointment with stylist Christina to get an ombre colouring, with the dark matching my roots (dark ash blonde) and fading to the light blonde I had already had coloured. From the get go the stylist was aloof and disengaged. Long nails scraping my scalp is not my idea of a soothing head massage during conditioning. The result is that my hair is overall slightly darker and my roots are a warm brown. Christina's response when I pointed this out was 'I really don't know why that happened...'. Well neither do I, but I'm not the one being paid to know. Such a waste of money. read more

I was surprised to find that my cut and blow dry came complete with a sermon on being born agin and the importance of inviting Jesus into my life. My spiritual beliefs are my own and found it shockingly offensive that someone would try to 'convert' me while they cut my hair. I called to make a appointment at the Ginger Group after visiting previously (8 years ago) and really enjoying my experience. I ended up booking an appointment with Jay and asked the receptionist specifically if I required a consult as I have difficult hair. Her response was that it would not be required. I came in early (approximately about 45 mins), as I got a ride to avoid the parking charges. My stylist was outside on a personal break so I took a moment to speak with a stylist that is a family friend. I sat and waiting until approximately 20 mins after my scheduled appointment (not offer water or tea) for my stylist to come and get me. I told her what I wanted done and her response was "I did not have time for that as she had to go home at 8". There are FAR better way to state that today that the service could not be performed due to time. I told her my hair had pulled brassy tones if should could try and tone them (something I do every 4-6 months). Again I got a blunt answers telling me "there is not way your hair pull that much". At this point I was ready to go home but she said she would try. She took the brassy tones out of my hair cut and styled it. Ultimately I liked my hair when WAS DONE WHEN I left and the only reason why I give the salon 2 stars. I spent almost $300 did not get what I wanted and was treated with disrespect! Just got my hair done by Jill, and she did an amazing job with the colour. I had a brown to blond ombre going in and I wanted to go full blond, and she made it look very natural and similar to what I wanted based off only a couple pictures. I would highly recommend her for colour and will definitely be going back; however, the cut I wasn't as excited about. I wanted a lot of different length layers, but I barely have any, and it looks almost completely blunt across the bottom, which I also didn't want, and also told her that when she asked. It felt like a very basic trim, and yet was still charged $85 for the haircut alone which was disappointing. Overall, I am a happy customer, but there are some things I would change the next time I go (and I will), and it is more expensive than I initially expected (I paid $230 for everything before tip). Won't go back again. Asked for a color correction as my hair was dyed black when should have been chocloate brown. Asked Nicole to fix however she thought best - after all, they are the experts right. Did explain that I wanted the black out. Nicole put highlights in that were blond - can you imagine the stark difference between the blond and the black - this only made the black look blacker and made look like a skunk. So she put a toner (demi) in which was ashy and now I have black, flat, ashy hair - yeah me!!!! Won't go back again - when I ask for a color correction and don't want black, it means, get rid of the black. read more

I have experienced both good and bad here. Once I came looking for a consultation on a perm. The stylist advised me not to get one, and instead gave me a free haircut, albeit just a few snips! It was extraordinarily generous , so I gave them a star for this experience, which happened about two years ago. Unfortunately, last time I went was terrible. I asked for a dark, ashy blonde to match my natural hair color. Not too difficult because my hair was already a very light blonde. In the end, I got a a dark chocolate brown with a red undertone. It was nothing close to a blonde, and nothing close to my roots or my eyebrows. I was shocked when the girl washing my hair announced, "Congratulations, you're a brunette!" When I said I didn't like it, my stylist immediately blamed me- she said "this IS dark blond" (which is not what the girl washing my hair thought...) but when I told her what the other girl said, she switched gears to "you asked for a brown", "you should have shown me a picture", and "I've been doing this for years". The stylist offered to fix it, but unfortunately if she doesn't know the difference between ash blonde and dark red-toned brown, I don't think I trust her to bleach my hair. She gave me a discount but I don't think I should have been charged at all-- because now I have to bleach my own hair back to what I want. I am much better at coloring my own hair than the stylist here was... never making that mistake again. I would have given more stars if the stylist had admit fault, but at least she gave me a discount. However I don't like being blamed when things go wrong... the instructions to match my roots and eyebrows were pretty clear. read more

Had appointment with Dyawn, she was running late which was fine, what wasn't fine was the rushed, hectic time she spent on my hair. This was the most unrelaxing, rushed cut I have ever received and my hair cut reflects this. I am very dissappointed in my experience at the Ginger Group because everyone wants to walk out of a salon feeling great. read more

I am unbelievably disappointed with the receptionist, Chelsea, at the Ginger Group. Imagine my surprise to hear that, when my mom showed up at a scheduled appointment on July 16, 2013, the receptionist had no record of the appointment. What is more unnerving is that this is the second time that my mom has shown up to discover that there was no appointment registered on their system. My mother explained to the receptionist, Chelsea, that she had an email confirmation of this appointment, to which Chelsea repeatedly told her that she was wrong, as there was no appointment noted in her calendar. It was at this point that my mother called me so that I could forward the confirmation email as proof. Even with this evidence in front of a salon full of people, Chelsea adamantly maintained that my mother was incorrect and that she would be denied an appointment. She briefly switched gears, making excuses for the company email. Chelsea went so far as to claim that someone else had hacked into their apparently incredibly important company email to send her the confirmation and mess with one of their customers. What, is this salon a front for NASA or the Pentagon?!?!?! It was at this point that I asked to speak to the owner on the phone because I was extremely frustrated with the total lack of professionalism, courtesy, and respect for my mom. I spoke to Rose, the owner. She tried to blame the stylist, saying that he was injured and that is why he missed the appointment. I explained to her that this was in no way the stylist's fault. We are not unreasonable people. If the stylist was injured, we are obviously concerned for him and want him to take the time he needs to heal. The problem is that no one called or emailed to rebook the appointment. I mean, how could they, when they don't even have a record of the appointment!?! Rose was completely rude and condescending on the phone and kept speaking over me, saying she didn't understand the problem. I explained to her that, as a business owner, she should ensure that she properly trains her staff and that they know how to take an appointment correctly (again being mindful that this is the second time that Chelsea screwed up my mom's appointment.) Rose, however, refused to place any blame whatsoever on the receptionist. I found out after the conversation with the owner that Chelsea, this poor excuse for a receptionist, was, in fact, Rose's daughter. Ah, ha! Now, I ask: why is it that business owners feel the need to hire their family and then not hold them to the same standards as they would any other employee? If someone else was messing up bookings and flatly stating that the client was wrong - in front of a room full of people, no less - even though they had proof of the appointment - they would be fired, or at least sent for retraining. But, because Chelsea is family, she does not have to be responsible for her actions. She does not have to show any professionalism. She does not have to demonstrate any respect for the people who are paying good money to keep her family's business open. When it became evident beyond any doubt that it was, in fact, the receptionist's fault for this error, my mom asked for an apology. Chelsea's response was, and I quote, "I am apologetic; I apologize...that you did not book an appointment." How rude! This girl should be fired! She should maybe eat some humble pie and own up to her mistake. I have worked in retail for over 10 years in both sales and management, and I have never seen such disrespect and poor customer service, whether from employees in my store or anywhere else, for that matter. Shame on Rose for letting her daughter treat her clients in this manner. She should be utterly ashamed of how she allows her staff to treat her clients, and she should be extremely embarrassed of how her daughter treats people. Or, perhaps, she feels that disgusting behaviour is completely acceptable, in which case they both require some lessons in customer service or, perhaps more to the heart of the matter, humanity. Even though Rose did not make her daughter take any ownership of her mistakes, she did offer to provide my mother with a free cut and dye in an effort to make amends.Now, all of this negativity aside, I do want to make clear that Jag,the stylist with whom my mom was supposed to have her appointment, is fabulous. He has been cutting my mom's hair for some time, and she has never been happier with a stylist! He is a true hair artist! UPDATE: August 1st. My mom showed up to her appointment to receive her free haircut and colour. Jag gave her the most amazing do! After her appointment, he walked her out and very apologetically told her that his Manager said that she was no longer welcome at that salon! I did not post my review until now because I wanted them to have the chance tomake it right. They had the opportunity to gain a lifelong client but instead they chose to dismiss her. I paid my first visit to the Ginger Group about six months ago, after winning a gift certificate for a free haircut, something they donated to a charity event. I have been going to Rosie (one of the owners, I think), ever since, and am so happy with the quality haircuts and styles she has done for me. She takes the time to really listen to what I want, whether it's just a cut, trim or a style for a special occasion. It's a friendly, clean salon and everyone appears to be happy to be working there. I will not be changing stylists anytime soon! read more

This is best hair salon I've ever been to! The receptionists are always friendly and within the first few minutes of arriving someone always comes to offer water or tea or coffee. The decor is trendy and there are always fresh flowers at every station. Rosie always gets my cut and colour just right and Stella gives the most amazing head massages! I had the worst experience I have ever had at a salon in my life. I was excited to find a new salon in Calgary and I couldn't have been more disappointed with my results. I have been going to the same hairdresser getting hi-lites for 6 years and after going to this salon I am afraid to get my hair hi-lited again. The hairdresser had no clue how to do blonde. I was stuck there all day and then left in tears, only to go back again the next day for another 5.5 hours. these people completely damaged my long healthy hair. After about 18 hours of them working on my hair I left again just as unhappy about it as I was the day before. I WOULD NOT recommend this place to anyone ever! the management did nothing to fix the issue. I had to pay 260.00 for nothing! my blonde hair looked way better before I entered this place. NEVER AGAIN!!! You would think if a salon had been around for so many years they would not have people who claim to know what they are doing when they should be working in Magic Cuts!!! read more
