The Gilded Pear is located in Downtown Smithfield. It is located in the Hood-Spiers Building, which has been restored. It was built in 1900 and still has the original tin ceiling, decorative windows and exposed brick. Seating is on two floors, providing a cozy feel if sitting in the loft. They have the "Pear Necessities of Life" This is both a cafe for coffee and teas but also a bakery that serves breakfast and lunch. They are known for their bubble waffles, and crepes. But also have a large menu that has sandwiches, salads, flat breads and breakfast items. There should be something that appeals to even the pickiest eater. Ordering is done at the counter, and you receive a number, and the beverage and food are brought to your table. The menu is posted outside the entrance so you can check it out first. I went with a rose and cranberry lemonade that was a drink special, and the bubble waffle, and added strawberries and bananas. The bubble waffle intrigued me as I had never had one before. It is a honeycomb waffle popular in Hong Kong. It is crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. It looks like bubble wrap, which is hard to tell as mine was covered in strawberries and bananas. I enjoyed the texture and flavors of it. The Gilded Pear is a great addition if you're looking for somewhere to grab a quick bite to eat. read more

This is the cutest place in Smithfield. Located on the main drag, they had great options for food, but I opted for an iced coffee on a hot June morning to start my day. The barista was very helpful. I asked her opinion about a couple of different things, I ended up with the coconut drink that was on special for the month. It was amazing. I sipped it as I walked through old historic Smithfield. The space itself you can tell a lot of love and thoughtfulness goes into the store. Everything was very clean, I love that they were cute messages on the cups, little positivity in this day and age really goes a long way. The food we got was decent & tasty, but was Very Disappointed by portion size of the breakfast eggs & "hash browns" (half mini taters). there was MAYBE a Half an egg & the 2 mini bacon pieces were about half sized as well. What a cute, quaint little coffee shop and eatery. My son found this spot when we were looking for something new to try while shopping in Smithfield. It did not dissapoint. The menu is interesting, and the 2 different crepes and bree with stewed pears, pecans and crackers were all excellent. I would go back for more of the same or to try something different. This was our first visit to this amazing coffee house! The atmosphere was very cute and rustic. The service from the moment we walked in was amazing. Our food was delicious!! We had the sausage egg and cheese muffin, Turkey Brie and red pepper jam muffin, and a bubble waffle with Nutella and bananas. They were out of strawberries but they went out to get more! Had the best little lunch with a friend today. First of all the service was great. My friend had a turkey sandwich with a side and I had a bubble waffle with bananas and peanut butter. Simple but delicious. Coffee was excellent. My only issue has nothing to do with this restaurant - it's the on street parking which can be a little dicey depending on the time of day. I just realized that this coffee shop had opened up in Smithfield and I was very excited. Smithfield was long overdue for a local coffee shop. I was disappointed in this one. The shop is beautiful and the service was pleasant. The disappointment came from the brand of syrups that are used. I am a huge fan of flavored lattes. However, just like most of the local coffee shops that I have visited, this one is using cheap Torani syrups. There are so many better and more authentic syrup options available such as Monin and 1883. This is my first time speaking up via Yelp on my coffee syrup soap box but I feel like it needs to finally be said. I wish the best for this coffee shop but until the quality of the product improves, I won't be back. read more
