I have come here a lot since I moved here a couple months ago, but i am surprised it took me this long to write a review. Being a beer snob and a dog lover I couldn't ask for a better place. They always have a bangin' selection of beers and allow all forms pups into the bar. All around wonderful place. I really like this place. Solid taps, lots of seating, decent music, random dogs available for petting, and a corner garden for prime, 5th avenue people watching. That being said, it's not perfect. Their Happy Hour is lame ($1 off already overpriced beers? Well thanks.) The crowd can be kind of weird sometimes (not good weird. Creepy weird.) The outdoor space shuts down kind of early (nice for the neighbors. Annoying for my drunk self.) And the bartenders aren't super attentive. But it's still a go-to bar for my friends and I. read more

Great beer selection obviously, that's one thing they're known for. But after nine years living in the slope, every time I've ventured in here, I've received a cold greeting from the unfriendly bartenders. Today was no different. I know the trends for bars nowadays are craft beer and cocktails. But the hospitality aspect of the bar industry in these sort of places have certainly gone south. Say hello! Is that too much to ask? Attempt a smile- be welcoming... Is that something that offering an advanced beer selection absolves you from having to do in this business? Being possessed of good bar etiquette from years on both sides of the stick, I don't like this current trend. Hospitality has been put on the back burner, in favor of strong beer and craft cocktail knowledge (which can be obtained in a million different books and pre-paid courses), a handlebar mustache and suspenders. I'd rather have the welcoming and friendly bartender of your average dive serving miller high life. read more

Best bar on 5th Ave with excellent bartenders. Hockey friendly. Great beer. Couldn't ask for anything else.

The Gate has been my go to bar for the past decade. The only thing holding it back from 5 stars is the fact that it can be impossible to get a seat on the weekends after 4PM. The beer selection is top notch for a neighborhood bar and their brewery events are not to be missed. The recent Zappa/Lagunitas night was one to be remembered. read more

Good environment, but let me say this; they have a dart board hallway, DEDICATED to darts... And the worst condition dart board I have ever seen. Don't even know how an entire game would be played when the darts either bounce out or fall off immediately. If they would spend $25 dollars on a new board I would be rating them 4 stars. But for the lack of care these people have for their establishment, 2 stars. Get a new dart board the gate! read more

This place has a great position and great beer selection...... BUT it has poor standard bar staff, from our 3 visits in 4 days. During the first two visits we sat at the bar and the two different femail staff were fine, if a little too preoccupied with their phones..... however, on the 3 rd visit, we sat at a table in the window and I went to the bar to order. 1st order included 3 beers of the same type, one out of the 3 was obviously not right, it was orange, compared to the other two which were normal beer colour. When I returned it to the bar, the barman spent 5 mins trying to convince me that I was wrong, there was nothing wrong with it he said whilst refusing to taste it himself. After an eternity, after I convinced him that as an englishman of 51 years, I had drunk enough real and craft ales to sink a battleship, and that I know a 'dodgy' pint when I see one, he finally changed it. So, The Gate,... please ask your staff to brighten up, try to be more customer focussed, and dont suggest that poor beer was because I just left the 50c change on the bar after the first round ( I always tip properly after the last round)........ I might give you a miss next visit to Park Slope. read more

there's nothing i specifically dislike about The Gate, but there's nothing about it that particularly appeals to me either. let's see... they have a large selection of beers but i don't drink beer... they have a large outdoor seating area but as someone who HATES cigarettes, i actually find it very unpleasant to sit outside in the smokers' heaven... it's not even the bar closest to my apartment. i prefer going to one of the dozen indoor bars i pass along the way, where the air is smoke-free (thank you, bloomberg!) and i don't get a look of disdain from the bartender for ordering something other than beer. read more

This is hands down one of my favorite bars in the slope! It's my go to spot for a quick drink. Drinks are super cheap (for city standards) and I love coming here on the weekdays. It's less crowded and you can sit at the bar without feeling squished. It can get pretty packed on the weekends, especially if coming here late at night. I honestly have not been in the neighborhood in a while, but when I do come, THIS IS MY GO TO SPOT! Funny thing: I actually ran into an old college professor here one night. Thank you sir for that A in writing!! And back to the main topic: the bartenders are really friggen nice. Ask for a stronger drink and THEY WILL DO IT...happily too, I might add. No added charge, no weird looks, and they are more than happy to add to your drunken night without judgement (haha!). Tip them well here, they love it and will remember it. During the summer days, they open up their "beer garden" in the back! read more

Accidently went into this place. It was not full, maybe 15 people there. I easily got a table with a friend. The drinks are small to me, but the bartender was very nice and was not trying to rob me of my money by putting little to no alcohol - so that made up for the little glass cups. The outdoor space makes this place one of the best bars in the area. If you can't snag an outdoor table though, it's pretty much like a lot of other spots. When the weather is perfect and you're sitting outside there with a cold beer, it's a pretty awesome experience. read more

Nice, chill bar. Bartenders seemed friendly enough to me. Try "The Concoction." It's made to taste similar to Penicillin. Not exactly a beer to drink for pleasure, but worth trying if for nothing else but the intrigue of it. If I lived locally, this would be a bar I would definitely frequent. read more

I liked this place. We went there a few times and had a great time. However went there yesterday to grab a few beers while waiting for friends. There are a few TVs there and we asked if one could be turned on a college football game we were interested in. The bartender rudely stated that it wasn't a sports bar. Apparently he was watching some sci-fi show. Not sure if he's ever been to a sports bar, but turning one of the TVs to a game at the request of a few patrons who are drinking at the bar which was largely empty during the daytime save for a children's birthday paty, is not going to turn the place into a sports bar. In fact, reacting that way shows you are just trying too hard. Instead of being cool, and hip...you are actually acting like a poser douchebag. I won't be back. Not because you aren't a sportsbar. But because you are annoying. Have fun with the 50 million kids that were at the children's birthday party you were hosting. I did like the Gate for it's backyard and casual atmosphere. I love that dogs are welcome in the back yard. Until one evening friends and I had just finished dinner at Sweet Wolf's and wanted to hang out and have a few beers. We had just gotten our carefully selected brews and were just hunkering down, and having a lively discussion when it happened....WE WERE SHUSSSHED! At first I was asking "what happened?" When I was told they were trying to get us to shut up I was confused because we were speaking in a normal conversational tone. Then I realized everyone was watching Breaking Bad. You could hear a freaking pin drop, we all sat there looking at each other not talking until I said let's go, so we left. If I want to watch TV I'll do it at home, If I want a beer I want to be allowed to talk. So as much as my husband likes the place he can go on his own read more

This is pretty much my favorite bar in Brooklyn because of the vibe alone. I love the beer selection, I love the patio, I love the awesome interior, I love that dogs are allowed, and I love the no strollers on the weekend rule! Lots of real, friendly people, TV's that do not dominate the bar, cool events, and a super relaxed, come as you are atmosphere. Perfection. read more

good selection and good service most of the time. the fellow clientele sometimes sucks (strollers and finance dudes) but you know, that's the area. there are often nice dogs outside. there are some nicer older people that come in and some funny swinger straight couples from long island and bay ridge cruising (seen it more than once). it's a fine place to sit and try a few beers. read more
