Other contractors estimate that the $5,130 Slonaker paving job is going to cost us up to $25,000 to fix. I cannot recommend Slonaker. Addendum: The owner has replied to my initial review and fabricated details about a tree being the cause for cracks. This is inaccurate, and certainly would not account for asphalt cracking all over the driveway, or the uncured "goo" in several locations on the drive. Plus, the job was under warranty, as per the contract. As for his crew spilling sealant all over the street in front of my neighbor's home, I'm surprised he admitted to it. I had not even mentioned that episode in an effort to keep my review focused on the major issue. But my neighbor was furious, and the incident is another example of Slonaker's bungling. The crew, who arrived six hours late, decided that hosing down the spilled sealant with water, which flowed into, and fouled, Craig's Run, was the ideal way to deal with the situation. We are very disappointed. We stand by my original conclusion: we cannot recommend Slonaker's.

The main project was installing a new Blaze King wood stove, including a new chimney crown and relining the chimney with an insulated stainless steel liner. They also repointed and repaired the cottage chimney, relined it for a woodstove, and repointed the main house chimney. With a wood stove or fireplace, the peace of mind is everything. I never had a single doubt that the work was done safely and to code, and that's worth a lot when it's your home on the line. From start to finish they were extremely professional, reliable, and clearly knew exactly what they were doing. They also went above and beyond on the logistics. The cottage work was tricky to schedule because we had Airbnb guests booked that we couldn't cancel, and they worked around our calendar completely. They even cleaned up mid-job so the space was guest-ready at check-in. At one point the cleaners they'd lined up bailed, and the owner, William, himself drove out on a Saturday morning to handle it personally and did an incredibly thorough job. The repointing deserves special mention. A previous owner had carelessly patched the historic chimney with Portland cement, which is the wrong material for an old home. First Response ground it all out and redid it in lime mortar, matching the original and restoring it the period-appropriate way. It looks like it should- like it was never touched. And they fully cleaned up after every job.

They don't tell you that they will delay returning calls about warranty concerns for two weeks, be nice to your face when you go in to talk with them and schedule the warranty work. The "contractor" showed up, barely spoke to us, and then gave us an Estimate for over $600 to replace the waterproof flooring that wasn't waterproof. Not to mention...the contractors took all the extra flooring when they did the original installation, so of course we have to pay them for the extra box when we only need a few pieces. They sent us an email later to tell us that the floor was damaged by dog pee so it won't be covered by the warranty. We asked for the insurance company number for the warranty and the insurance company will not accept a direct claim from a consumer. An over $6k investment in my home is now ruined in less than a year by misrepresentations (i.e. pet proof and waterproof) faulty installation, refusal to honor warranty, and customer grief instead of customer service. We wish we had done this ourselves...less headache.

Sadly, this was the worst contractor service I have ever experienced. The most difficult part of…read morethis experience is how much money I spent to end up with floors that were installed improperly. The product choices they have are okay, but they should have glued the floors in place rather than nailing them. So now these are the only floors in the house that make creaking noises when you walk on them. The rest of our main floor, which is all wood flooring, was installed by the builder and does not have a single creak, as they glued it down. Flooring America installers did come back and fix the entrance to one of the rooms to even it up where they had not made it flush with the other floor, and to fix the creak there once I showed them that issue. Now that entrance is the only part of the flooring they installed that does not creak, and that is because they fixed that part by building it up with glue (figure that). Additionally, when they asked about the install and I told them the situation, they tried to make the excuse that they could not find the exact matching flooring to my pre-existing flooring. However, as I told them, that makes no sense because their flooring is the same width and thickness, so it installed flush everywhere in the two rooms they installed it in except for a couple inches of the entrance of the one room, AND I never complained about the floor not being an exact match. In fact, they advised me on which wood flooring sizes would work with my pre-existing, came out and measured, and told me the flooring should match up as it was the same size! When it was all said and done, when one of the reps asked me how everything went, I told her, and shockingly she literally said to me that all I have done is complain! She even raised her voice at me. I never asked for a discount or a refund, so I found that completely uncalled for, particularly considering how much I paid for this project. All I can say is if you ever purchase flooring from Flooring America in Winchester, you may want to consider getting someone else to install it.
