Great store, incredibly friendly staff! I'm excited about this one opening. Will definitely be a go-to for games and game supplies for me.

I've sold cards here a few times to try and free up some cash and the lady Mitch has working with him is rude, not knowledgeable, unprofessional and very short in explaining why she's pricing my cards the was she does. Offered me 75 percent off a Raw price card for my PSA 10 of that card.. also tried hiding one of my raw cards in a pile on her desk hoping I would forget it as she possibly tried stealing it. Also, if my card is "damaged," point it out to me instead of brushing me off with no explanation. Be more communicative with people. Also if you try and show last comps on their cards in the cases, they don't like that but will do it free willingly to yours? Make it make sense. Showed a recent comp that showed a sale 2 weeks ago for $68 on a card he had priced at $115. Even though I've brought him so many cards and made plenty of deals, he can't even try and make a solid deal with me, a loyal customer. Says "oh I'd rather just keep the card at this point." Extremely bad business if you ask me. I've been to so many shops all over the area and even different states. This has got to be the one I've had the worst experience at by a long shot. I loved going here because it was my local card shop. But every time I come, I am completely let down.. As a local card shop selling cardboard, be more fair and friendly to customers with pricing, it goes along way and creates better experiences and more business down the road. I never brought them thousands of dollars worth of cards, but sad to say you lost a loyal, friendly customer.

The Venice Beach Knights is "a chess club with no walls" run by Tim Caldwell. Tim runs a fun and…read morerespectful club, which emphasizes good sportsmanship and friendly behavior. When I first arrived, I bought a club t-shirt which also granted me free club membership. To initiate me into the club, he used a "magic wand" (a queen on a curly piece of wire) to "knight" me an official Venice Beach Knight. The process of my knighting was for him to recite "wisdom, integrity, and honesty" and he tapped my shoulders with the wand. It was honestly one of the most endearing experiences I have ever had in the chess world. After my knighting, Tim let me know the chess club rules: Be polite, always return the pieces to their correct position, shake hands and say thank you after each game, and no discussing religion, politics, or other heated topics over the chess board. He let me know that if anyone tries to discuss something unwelcome with me, that I should simply reply with "What does that have to do with chess?" Tim Caldwell is LA's kind and supportive chess uncle that we never knew we needed. I let him know that I'm a beginner player, and he was very patient and kind as we played through several games. He helped to record the notation for our moves and walked me through the games afterwards to explain my mistakes. If you'd like to visible the VB knights, you can usually find their blue tent along the Venice Beach boardwalk at the intersection of Ocean Front Walk and Westminster Ave. However, the exact location may change slightly from day to day. Occasionally Tim will post where they are for the day on his YouTube channel, but this cannot be guaranteed. According to their website, the club is open from Friday - Monday for most of the day. In my experience, the best time to go to find other players at the club is the weekend. This is particularly true in the summer time when the tourists are out in droves. Watch out, though: There are other chess players along the boardwalk as well. These other folks are usually just playing games for money, and are unaffiliated with the Venice Beach Knights club. While the VB Knights do charge a membership fee (as do many chess clubs), they are notably not trying to scam or hustle players. Tim Caldwell told LA Weekly specifically that he was not interested in chess hustling. He instead wanted "to start a chess club to promote and teach chess... and to build a chess community." As he put it: "It might be less money, but it's more fulfillment."
