A staple of Pratt Institute, not for its inherent quality but just because most students have to deal with this train at least on a weekly basis. The wait for the train varies, if you're lucky it could be about a few minutes but usually the wait is more comparable to ten to twenty minutes. By the time you actually get on you'd see that the train is looks like a 1960s McDonald's and often filled with the seediest people you'd ever meet in New York City. With the G train it would often take around 40 minutes between transferring and waiting to get to just about any place in New York City. It actually almost takes about the same amount of time to walk to the Brooklyn Museum/Botanical Gardens than it would to take the G train to it. The train is the worst late at night, towards 1 am the train seems to come only once every thirty minutes to an hour or so. Usually its disgustingly crowded between 4 and 6 o'clock (even by subway standards) and I've known a couple of friends who have gotten into fights with extremely weird people on this train. If you could avoid it at all costs. With the MTA's financial crisis they are cutting down service to the G train by about 50%. Pair this in with a new $2.50 subway faire and Pratt students would have to walk about a three-quarters of a mile to take the subway to go some place. Not that this would be a big loss or anything, its probably better than taking the G train. read more

My only problem with this train was that it was covered with those stupid Snickers ads. Aside from that, no problem. It was on time as far as I could tell, it got me to where I needed to go, and it was fast. It was no different than the other train lines I had been on; in fact, I've been on worse (Green Line, anyone?). read more

I like this train because it is special in that it's short. But usually not very crowded. Balance. I don't like this train because it doesn't run very frequently. I like this train because it goes to Greenpoint, where I work. read more

Unreliable. Late. You never know how long will take until the next train. No matter the time of the day of the week. Please, MTA, more trains for the G line!!! read more

The train itself is fine, but I have a HARD complaint about the Greenpoint station. It is this: the light and buzzer signal that alert you on the top floor and tell you which train is coming on the platform below, turn on A FULL TWO MINUTES before a train even arrives, then stops after 5 seconds. This is useless, as it does not take two minutes to walk through the turnsdial, and frustrating, as it could be a very useful feature. No one waits for trains on the top floor. FIX IT, MTA. I apologize to everyone who read this review all the way through. read more

There is a fifth dimension beyond that which is known to man. It is a dimension as vast as space and as timeless as infinity. It is the middle ground between light and shadow, between science and superstition, and it lies between the pit of man's fears and the summit of his knowledge. This is the dimension of imagination. It is an area which we call the G Train. read more

The G is your one-stop (sometimes almost literally) spot for all your endless platform-waiting, immune-system-threatening needs! Truly it is the bus of subway lines, in that it is about as big as one, and also, is awful. I always look to the G whenever I want to get somewhere I don't really want to go (anywhere north of Fulton), or else just get there really, really slowly. It also provides excellent motivation for getting some exercise, first by making you obscenely angry at how poorly run it is, or even at the fact that it exists, and then making you decide FINE, I'LL JUST FUCKING WALK INSTEAD. Alternately, it's a wonderful excuse to just spend the money and treat yourself to a cab. Finally, as a special bonus, most stations offer a free sampling of several varieties of the scent of human urine--from "I'm homeless/drunk, who gives a fuck" to "I have been waiting for this train so long that wild public urination as a form of entertainment is all that is keeping my mind intact"--all without the trouble of having to go to a bathroom first! Wow! If you too would like to sample the majesty that is the G, but don't feel like buying a Metrocard, simply be a bad person for your entire life and then die. From what I understand of theology, you should then end up in a place that offers a pretty similar experience. I'll see you there. read more

The G is now going all the way to Church Avenue! Huzzah! I can get to Unlucky compound on a single train! Good show, good show.

Hate the G train. Judge me. I gave this 2 stars because it IS a train and it DOES get me where I need to go .. Sometimes. This is the worst subway line in nyc, needless to say. VERY slow. I feel like its the end of the world when I miss this train by a few seconds because I know I will be waiting for atleast another 20 minutes for the next one to come. This is on a regular day. Days that the G line is being fixed ? Forget about it. I don't even attempt to go on this wild goose chase of a train. I'd never make it to my destination ! Please, fix this line. If it ran just as fast and efficiently as any other subway line in nyc it would be tolerable. The G line DESPERATELY needs to be improved. Metropolitan stop is WAY too crowded for the G train to be this short and this slow. Pleaseee FIX !!!!!!!! read more

Crap service, old crappy trains. Time travel back to the 80's. There are apts in Greenpoint renting for 3k plus a month now! Gentrify your service MTA! read more

Before I moved to Greenpoint I always heard the worst things about the G train. Then I moved here and found that it really is not all that bad. The L train is infinitely worse in my opinion. Sure, the G doesn't go into Manhattan, but it does run fairly frequently during rush hour and isn't often overcrowded, which is very important to me. I like my space. Also I tend to get a seat on my morning & evening commutes, which is a plus. It's really not all that bad. Give the G a chance. read more

G train is fail. No one doubts this. Even if you read the metro on a regular basis the faults are outlined continuously as one of the worst subway lines in NYC. On the plus side there are frequently busker's riding around and its nice to have a little music when I ain't got my IPOD. read more

G, I wonder when the train will show up? Probably later than you want it to. Also, is it just me, or does the platform at Metropolitan Ave feel colder in the winter and hotter in the summer than any other platform? read more

This is public transportation? All the subways in NY are a joke. Late, dirty, unreliable. It's laughable and shameful. Ride a bicycle. Save yourself the aggravation and get a little workout at the same time. People in NY, stop accepting this type of shitty service. You have a choice. read more

This is like the runt of trains. It's way shorter. It never gets to go to the big city. It has to travel to Queens ALL DAY LONG!! Sad. Very sad. If I was a train, I would not want to be the G. It constantly gets picked on and is usually getting track work done every weekend. That's like having to see the dentist frequently. Sad. Very sad. I do choose this over the C train nearby though, as I actually feel safer in the station. read more

G train....oh, G train. Thou art the g string of Brooklyn, merely the dental floss that claims to be real underwear...or a train for that matter. The G train is the lifeline for wee little Prattonians, and a good thing for the residents of Williamsburg. It goes where it says it goes, but hopefully you aren't in a hurry when you hope to take it. I think if more G's would run, it would be a much more worthwhile train route....but since the trains are soooo slow and infrequent, I avoid taking this guy at all costs. Sorry G - I know we had some good times, but they don't top all the bad times. :( read more

I know this is going against the general rating, but I adore the G! It's loves me! I know this for a fact because of the many times, I stroll down the stairs at Metropolitan and low and behold the G is pulling up for me, just me! The drivers are also super sweet, they often will hold the train if they see you running down the stairs, what driver on any other subway does that for you! Dare I ask! It keeps me warm in the winter when I loathe waiting for the 61 in Williamsburg and keeps me cool in the sunny summer months when the sun is just too much! I only wish it went past court square so I could pick it up on my way home, do that G train and I will give you that final star rating! Otherwise it's a winner! So, I ask, does the G train love me, why yes! read more

I usually never take the G but I was visiting my friend and this is the line that stops closest to her place so I gave it a whirl. Wow, what an experience! First when I was waiting I did observe two rats in a sex act on the tracks, making more squealing noise than a flock of seagulls. Then the train comes - only 4 cars, WTF???? So I'm running in heels like a whacko bird to make the very last door of the train!! Then, I did observe that the conudctor's announcements sound like the adults in Charlie Brown cartoons - Wah wah wah wah wah! Lastly when I got off and was walking up the exit steps I did observe, this was the platform steps, a lump of human feces with a half chewed carrot! All on one train ride. I think I'll cab it to this part of Brooklyn in future. read more

I BEAT THE G TRAIN!!! The preface: I don't know why, but based on the timing of late night trains, the MTA evidently think that subway riders don't have bathroom needs. Well I do. Here's my story: As is often the case with the G-train, I was kinda drunk and stranded at Bedford-Nostrand. It was running in two parts, as usual. Now so far, I have learned not to be shy, but instead rather proud as I punish MTA's lack of customer service by pissing on the Bedford-Nostrand station platform. (If this offends you, I am NOT sorry. I will not risk missing the train at 3 AM.) But last night I broke new ground. After drinking on an empty stomach and sadly staggering off of the G-train at Bedford-Nostrand and waiting about 20 minutes, I couldn't hold it back any more. Puke. Yellow. It all came out at once. It was so fast, I wonder if anyone even noticed it happening. I looked down at my shoes. The evidence of my crime surrounding me in it's disgusting yellow brightness. For a moment, I was embarrassed. I knew who I was at that moment. I was the the pathetically drunk guy on the train. We've all seen him, and last night, that was me. But in that moment of truth, as my pool of barf reflected the harsh light from above, I began to feel proud. I had stood my ground. I beat the MTA. That big, slothful machine which giveth no man or woman quarter was brought to justice by the innocent and completely involuntary act of a human being's digestive system. As the saying goes, when an unstoppable force meets an immovable object, something's got to give. Prologue: Nearly as soon as the moment had passed, who should I see clickety-clacking on down the line, but Mr Queens-bound G train. The timing was perfect. I stepped nonchalantly from my puddle into the train with nary a soul realizing what had happened. So what can be learned here? Well, first of all, The G train gets one star. It's pretty crappy in terms of time table, but more than that, it simply CAN'T get more than one star. I beat it, you see? Much like the respect you lose for the hot chick after you fuck her, I have lost all respect for the G train. From now on, Bedford-Nostrand will be not a place to transfer trains at 2AM on Tuesday, but rather the ground zero of my victory. The place where rules, infrastructure, culture, laws, expectation, and dignity all buckled beneath the sheer force of my dragon comet. From here on out, I will gladly step out of the Short-bus of trains at Bedford-Nostrand. I will seek the exact spot where my puddle of truth graced the platform, waiting there the 20-30 minutes for the other half of the G-train experience to arrive. And finally, if the magic of the night so necessitates, I will do it all over again. -One love read more

The G isn't the best or most reliable train in the system, but a lot of the flak it gets isn't really fair, IMO. It's true, it doesn't go into Manhattan, just between Brooklyn and Queens. As far as I'm concerned, though, that's a plus. Contrary to what some people think, we do not all revolve around Manhattan. I personally hate having to go into Manhattan just to get to a different part of Brooklyn, so I appreciate the G for that reason. It's also generally one of the trains I feel safest on, so that's always nice. I do try to avoid it late nights and weekends, because trains are often just too spaced apart at that point, but other than that, while it doesn't come every two minutes, it does follow a schedule pretty well, and you typically won't be stuck waiting too long. read more

Awww come on, its not all that bad, people!!!!!! It'll take me from Williamsburg to Queens without going into Manhattan, and for that I'm grateful. Sure, its a little slower than most trains but I've never had to wait more than 10 minutes for it during the day (at night its a different story but HELLO I've waited 45 minutes for the L and A before in the middle of the night so I don't see what everyone's complaining about). Some of the greatest moments in my life include running to catch the G. Plus, when the tracks go above the Gowanus it provides a great view! read more

Love the G. I've been riding it for over 5 years to and fro and it gets me pretty much everywhere I need to go. This train crosses every other line that goes into Manhattan from downtown to midtown so you don't have to deal with the super crowded trains in Manhattan. It's almost always on time, you just have to look up the arrival times on the MTA Trip Planner website. On weekends and late nights there is a larger gap between trains which can be annoying, but it almost always arrives exactly on time so just plan a little and stop complaining. I do wish that they would extend the G up into Astoria along the N/Q lines so getting to the stupid M60 LGA shuttle was easier. When they extended the G past Smith-9th into Park Slope that was great. Otherwise I think the G is one of the best lines in NYC (screw the haters)! read more

Up until 2 days ago, the G train had negative stars - it doesn't go anywhere useful, unless you consider a big circle useful which I do not. It's also slow and just dumb. At times I have felt like a human G Train - I keep moving but I don't go anywhere of importance. Then something happened. I am moving to Brooklyn, my friend is moving to Queens - holy crap, I can take the G train directly from point A to point B. I'm still not in love, but I might get there. read more

My personal vision of Hell would be waiting on a urine-stinking subway platform with more crumbling paint chips than intact tiles. The G train is this nightmare incarnate. On a early weekday morning you may only have to wait 5 minutes for the next G. Be vigilant, however, as they are shorter than average and will leave without you if they can possibly find a reason for doing so. DO NOT RIDE THIS TRAIN LATE NIGHTS! As a last resort I am glad that its there, but unless you like waiting for 45 minutes next to a vomiting transient at 3:00AM, I would suggest a taxi. As a closing, a friend of mine, and long time Brooklyn resident, has done the math and figured that he has spent 1 ENTIRE YEAR waiting for the G train. Needless to say, he moved. read more

This train is so awful. It is half the size of regular trains, and by that I mean is has about 4 or 5 cars, instead of 8 or 9. I use it when I want to go to Greenpoint for some Polish grub. I grab the F train to Smith and 9th, wait for the G to struggle into the station and then enjoy a slow, bumpy ride into Little Poland. Hate this train! So slow and dirty. read more

I have a very love and hate relationship with you Mr G train! You are so unpredictable, yet are my only way home unless I want to cab. So for that I am giving you 3 stars. I would hate to give you a lower mark and somehow jinx myself and miss every friggin train from now on. Seriously the G train and MTA need to step up and solve this problem. There already was a woman attacked late at night in queens and for it to run every 30-45 minutes late at night is not only unsafe but down right stupid. So hurry up and get better. I am tired of waiting for you all the time! read more

The worst train line ever. Runs like every 30 minutes and most of the time because of construction, the last stop for this train is Court Square which is very annoying. During the morning rush hours, the conductors start yelling. Makes the riders feels so low class. Also they lie saying there is another train directly behind this one while you will wait 30 minutes for the next train. Thank god I will be done with school in June and will never have to take this crappy G line ever again. read more

How could anyone possibly give the G train anything higher than 3 stars? It is awful on weekends, and it's short. I live in Greenpoint and I usually walk over the Pulaski to take the 7, unless I'm going to the LES/EV. And I still think it might quicker to walk to the 7. read more

I used to hate the G, but ive come to realize why I should praise it. Yes, we need extra service. Yes the fact that the G is only a 4 car train is retarded. But for most subway riders in greenpoint, williamsburg, and bed stuy, its all they have. When it arrives, it does kick ass. I think these are the best bets to improve this line: 1. increase the amount of trains per hour. Like seriously, headways of 30 minutes is just unacceptable. 2. increase length of trains. coney island yard has a sufficent amount of equipment to increase train length, and besides, G train ridership has gone through the roof ever since 2011. 3. extend it back to forest hills 71 avenue. back in the early 2000's the G would go to forest hills when the V wasnt running. use that pattern today, just do it with the M this time 4. change terminal operations at court square and church avenue. leave all train doors open at court square instead of one, and at church avenue, install a crossover to the southbound express track north of the station, so that the F doesnt have to be delayed at fort hamilton for the G to move Otherwise, the G is doing okay read more

This train hits most of my favorite spots in Brooklyn. The whole "run to catch it because it's half the length of the platform" is sometimes exciting, but of course there are those times they shut the door just before you get there, especially if you're whi Prettiest girls in town. The only train not on NYC condoms, which might mean a couple of different things. Come here if you're looking for dirtier and riskier but much better? Ghetto train, ghost train, greatest train, or just a G thang. Sometimes you wait 45 minutes for the next one. Sometimes they just stop running without telling anybody. Find me there. Love me. See you around. read more

I need this subway line to return to parts of Queens like the 74th ST broadway station so that I can have easier access to Brooklyn from where I live in Queens. I find I can ride my bicycle to Brooklyn faster than taking the E train to 23rd and Ely and switching to a G train that takes forever to even pull out of the station to take me into Brooklyn. Lets bring back the G train deeper into Queens please. Thank you read more

The MTA actively made this train WORSE. The G used to go all the way to 71st Street Continental and they were all like 'Nahhhh' and made the last stop Court Square. I still hate the G train. It still sucks I have moved away from Greenpoint. Now the only time I ride the G is when I go to Bed-Stinkie.

I Like The "G" Train Because it's one of the most interesting and unique lines that doesn't go through Manhattan. The wait times can be pretty long since the "G" isn't as frequent as it should be, the "G" has only 4 train cars is because not many people use it & because the platform length is pretty short which is why 4 train cars would make sense for a subway line that is not as popular as the 4,5 or 6 trains and short platform length. A good thing to remember is to always board the "G" train in the middle of the platform as mentioned before it is a 4 car train because if you board in the front of the platform or in the end of the platform, chances are you're gonna miss the "G". read more
