Guys... There really is no room for this on the 1 Train!
    Karen S.

DO NOT CROSS YOUR LEGS ON THE 1 TRAIN! It's too damned narrow. As with all the IRT lines (read up on your NYC Subway history: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_the_IRT_subway_before_1918 THERE ARE NO "RED" OR "BLUE" LINES IN THIS CITY YOU NOOB!) this line was one of the first subway lines in the city. It's not made for you to dangle your flip-flops off your big toe as you read the New York Times as wide as your arms can stretch. If you do, don't cop an attitude when I crush your paper and knock your shoe off. You have been warned.

With my new found chapter, I make my daily trek into Da Bronx via 1 Train. Connecting at 168th Street to catch the 1 train undergoes a labyrinth of long and windy stairs and passageways including an elevator ride. The 1 train is local therefore the ride itself will feel like an eternity. This train runs elevated above the ground beginning 125 Street into the Bronx. It crosses the Harlem River Ship Canal between Inwood in Manhattan island and Marble Hill (originally part of Manhattan island but separated by the ship canal; it is still part of the borough of Manhattan). The 1 train (IRT Broadway - Seventh Avenue Line) crosses Broadway Bridge above the road. Immediately to the north of the bridge along this rail line is Metro North's Marble Hill - 225th Street station. The rail cars are narrow in width compared with the A train.

The 1 is my home line and I really have few complaints. The A is a joke (especially on weekends, thanks Sandy you bitch for flooding the Cranberry tube necessitating reroutes to the Rutgers tube - aka when the A runs via the F from W4 to Jay Street) and I avoid it at all costs unless I have to...i.e. those lovely weekends when the 1 is suspended north of 137 or 96. In the summer the R62 cars (the stuff that runs on the 1) have some really hit or miss AC...aside from that it's usuallg a decent ride...and don't fall for the jumping on a 2 or 3 express at 96 or 72...I've done that too many times and gotten screwed by rail control holding the express for the 1 to go ahead. JUST STAY ON THE 1...THE FEW EXTRA STOPS AREN'T A BIG DEAL! The 1 is subterannean from South Ferry to Dyckman Street with the exception of 125th Street because the topography of Manhattan actually FORCES the route to become an El for that little stretch. Dyckman north to Van Cortlandt Park-242 Street is all above ground. Of note...now that they've finished the remodel of 168th Street (the ceiling collapsed onto the tracks several years ago) jump off admire the brilliant restoration work of the tilework and light fixtures (look up!) and the cavernous feel of this station.

Like every subway line in Manhattan, constant delays and service changes make for a miserable commute on this line. Even worse, most trains on this line don't have air conditioning! Are you kidding me!?!! So on a crowded day, expect sweaty grossness rubbing up against you. Absolutely dreadful and pitiful mode of transportation.

So while they announce this particular quirk of the South Ferry station well before the train actually gets there, the "announcement" is basically inaudible.

Just remember, this bus doesn't take cash. You must purchase a ticket before you board. All three doors open making for speedy boarding and disembarking of passengers. Keep your receipt after you buy your ticket. Sometimes a MTA Employee will be at a stop checking to see if passengers paid. The fine for not paying is hefty! The buses are new and have been clean when I ride. Passengers are not as crazy as I remember in the past on this route. I like that this bus stops right on my corner. Especially when I have shopping bags. All major intersections have a bus stop along this route. You need to use your Metro Card to buy the fare. Read all the instructions before you attempt to use this service. Much like all NYC Public Transportation there's lots of rules and regulations. I'm still a fan of faster service. If you're going very far, or out when it's 20 degrees wind chill, you should ride! Check out my photos.

The 7th Ave Line Local 1 train services here during the day, and the 2 also stops when it runs Local a night. The station's easy to use with a in-station transfer crossunder and having ADA-compliant accessibility. As one of the 28 stations in the original 1904 IRT lines, decades before the Lincoln Center was built and it was only just the 66th St. Station in the San Juan Hill section of town, you'll find the original ceramic trim maintained along the top of the platform walls. Enjoy this station's colored glass mosaic murals which decorate the walls with dramatic characters appearing to perform for passengers, including an often repeated diva in a golden hooded full length robe, which captures the light - as it should for a diva! They are what I normally catch through my train window as my Express train speeds by. In 1999, giving a nod to the Lincoln Center's dedication to the performing arts, MTA installed artist and activist Nancy Spero's "Artemis, Actobats, Divas and Dancers." This work immortalizes the period musicians, actors, dancers, acrobats, and other classic performers doing what they do best - put on a show! Better to check out close up when you're at this stop!
