Effective June 27, 2010 MTA has shorten the G train's blood line which ends at Court Square in Long Island City, Queens as it was once operating on part-time basis to Forest Hills as its final destination. G Train gives immense grief to riders as you'll be waiting for an eternity for the next train if missing the current one. G *#$%^& Train. I took the G for years- and trust me, I do not miss it... This has got to be the worst line in the entire subway system (with the L running neck and neck) Filthy stations, whacked out riders and a total lack of service. I have to admit though, it was the most interesting 5 stop ride I ever made... I used to love standing there waiting for the G and 5 G's would pass going the other way. Never could figure that out. I ride the G train every weekday and it's not that bad. Look, is it only four cars long? Yes. Does it get packed during rush hours? Yes, but compared to the 4 or the F trains, it's not that bad. When they do construction on the weekend, can it take you 90 minutes for a trip that should be 15? Sure. But consider this... To Court Square / Long Island City section of Queens Transfer available to the 7,E,M-Trains. This train only has subway 5 carts is only a Two Borough subway line to Queens and Brooklyn. What a brilliant idea: a train that never goes into Manhattan (the only one too) and is crosstown between the County of Kings and the County of Queens! Beautiful. Now, not so much. You extended your service to Church Ave., which is awesome, but I live one more stop south of Church. Somewhat convenient for going to Williamsburg or Greenpoint, yes...but you cease operation at Court Sq. on the weekends (I think). And, at night now you run in two sections--from Forest Hills to Bedford-Nostrand and from BN to Church Ave., and every thirty minutes at 12:30. Huh? Also, can someone---anyone---please tell me what will happen when the MTA dismantles the Smith and 9th St. stop on the F/G?? Sigh. I really don't mind the G train in the way that some other people do. I live off the Bedford/Nostrand stop and don't really wanna move away from the G. Of course, I have the option of walking a few more blocks and taking the A/C, which is really nbd, but I mostly use the G. Like my love for shittastic LaGuardia Airport - trusty in its untrustworthiness - I think I like the G because not unlike a virgin, the G will come eventually no matter what - and when it does you always (well, almost always) know where its going. For a while, Carroll Street was closed, but I took it from there last night and it was just fine. And besides, from the G you can connect to the F, which takes you to Coney Island/Brighton Beach, aka my favourite place in New York. I have worn a vikiing helmet on the G at 2am. I have ridden the G train of shame at 7am on a Saturday morning. I have been late picking my mom up at Grand Central because of the G. Many an Occupy protest started with a trip on the G train. When I first moved here, my cousin took me halfway to Queens before realizing we got on on the wrong side of the G train track. I wouldn't change the G train for the world. read more

There are some days in which I hate the MTA and riding the G train certainly doesn't help. I've had the displeasure of having to ride this train at night and missing it on more than one occasion. I understand the need to have this train for the sake of connecting Brooklyn and Queens, but I wish it ran more often. I'm glad to know that now the G trains have some new updated cars. The G Train - Classon Avenue (G) - Public Transportation Near Me

How have I not reviewed this line? I loathe, hate & despise the G train with a passion. First off, it's got fewer cars than the other trains. Second, you have to wait an eternity for it. If you have a smartphone & downloaded the Embark app, it is a little better since you can at least find out if you're waiting 5 minutes or 20 for the next train to depart. Without it, though, that wait SUCKS. Third, if you're taking this train during rush hour you WILL get crushed by the volume and weight of the other passengers. I did this once; it was even worse than being on the L during morning rush hour. Whenever I can avoid this train, I do so. I feel very sorry for anyone who has to rely on it as their primary subway. i took the g train for the first time to meet my football sunday in greenpoint and wow its was a short trip.i took the 7 train at grand central station to the court sq station in queens and took the g train to greenpoint station in brooklyn.the g line has 21 stations between queens and brooklyn with the latter having the most stations. from court sq in queens to church st in brooklyn the almost 12 mile trip aint that bad especially if you only have 2 train stops(me). it can get a bit crowded as this line has less train cars and if you miss a train you may wait a bit. overall the g train line works for me going to greenpoint in less then 15 minutes. read more

Maybe it's just me, but this has to be one of the most miserable lines the MTA is responsible for. The best thing about it? It comes to a dead halt at Court Square, an admirable destination. Otherwise, what's the reason for garbled and unintelligible speech from that comes over the intercom announcing stations -- apparently made by someone bored with their job --that is pretty much indecipherable? Why no subway map or LED display showing stations and connections? You know, a few of those modern conveniences most subways in the world had 25 years ago. It's like 1984 on this one. And the weird thought behind connections to other lines in and around the square that makes up the Hoyt Schermerhorn and Union St. terminals. It's like a maze for rats designed to keep you lost. It could have been a grand terminal making connections easy and quicker for all. But no. The stations at least have displays telling you when the next train is arriving, I'll give it that. Otherwise, when I'm in the city, I think twice before heading anywhere on this miserable thing. There, I've ranted at a subway station, words no one will read. I feel better. This train is underrated and misunderstood. For one, the G is extremely consistent--just download an app like iTrans and look at the schedule. The G is almost always on-time, partially BECAUSE it doesn't enter Manhattan and deal with merging with a mess of other routes. It only shares tracks with one other line for a fairly small portion of its route, and the spacing is wide enough that it doesn't have congestion or bunching issues. The population growth in the parts of Brooklyn the G train serves means that it is having trouble keeping up with demand--especially since the MTA only has enough cars to run 4-car sets. So it can get a little crowded, which should hopefully be relieved once the MTA takes delivery of its newest order of cars (a few years out). Downsides: - It can be a DISASTER on the weekends, but what MTA line isn't? NYC requires planning ahead. - They should have better signage on the platform to indicate where it will stop. Insider tips: - Look for the little "4" or "S" sign hanging from the ceiling along the platform. That indicates to the train operator where the front of the train is to stop. - You can easily walk from the Fulton Street station to the subway or LIRR at Atlantic Avenue. It's silly to have to leave the system, but the G train was never the popular kid. And seriously, get a schedule app. If you're reading Yelp, you're probably a hipster, ergo you definitely have a smartphone. read more

We have a weird relationship, G train and I. I am annoyed at this line yet I'm upset when people other than me laughs and make fun of it, specially those who don't or rarely ride the G. (You don't ride it, so you don't own it... mmmmokayy?) The whole idea of a line that connects interboroughly (is that even a word?) without the need to go into Manhattan is wonderful but the performance of the realized idea is very poor. The G line is not bad during the regular weekday hours, but sucks on late nights and weekends, it is horrible during constructions. Sure, constructions are for improvements but how long will it take? 2035? By that time teleportation devices should be ready.... G train also gets no love, always the last to get improvements, to get new cars, to get A FREAKING TIMER in the station. Seriously, G train needs/deserves a timer more than any other lines at this point. So... install them for frack's sake MTA! read more

Dear G train: I recently moved to San Francisco. I can't believe I was ever annoyed with you. If you were part of SF's Muni, you would easily be at the top of your class. You're actually pretty zippy during the day, and even nights and weekends are, well, better than a lot of SF transit, that's for sure. You defy the laws of logic with your odd shenanigans like the classic, 'No matter what side of the track I'm on 3 trains will come by on the other side before mine does'; or who can forget the good old 'Why are there more rats down here than people?', bit; Or possibly the best part of the G Train "experience" would be watching people who've never taken the G before stand at one end of the station or the other, assuming it's a normal-size train only to have to run like they are being chased by a Saber-Toothed Tiger when the train comes barrelling into the station, it's Napoleonic 4 car length flying past them to show them the folly of their choice in transportation. I must admit that when I first moved here, I was slightly smitten with your old-world charm evidenced by things like never showing up at the same time twice, kind of like that one drunk uncle that awkwardly shows up at the family reunion halfway through dinner; or the fact that you seem to have chosen people missing half of their tongue and with a Brooklyn accent so thick even God couldn't understand what they're saying barking out the next stop; maybe it's the fact that for some reason the first door on the first car on the Queens-bound side always closes while people are still getting on the train at the Metropolitan Ave stop. I call this the "Unicorn Train". People say that it's real, but no one has seen it. Little girls have posters of this on walls and on notebooks. This was even the obsession of Christine Taylor in the movie, "Dodgeball". I have the option to take this train which is a 2-3 min bus ride from my place to it's origin, Church Ave in Brooklyn to get to Williamsburg. I choose to take the N into Manhattan to Union Square and take the L from there. Why do I choose the longer route? Cause this train never comes! I am so sick to death of all the people hating on the G Train. Yes, I have had some bad G train experiences ... but how does that differ from like ANY OTHER TRAIN IN THE NYC MTA SYSTEM? Tell me. the G is the ONLY train in the whole system that connects Brooklyn and Queens directly, it's the only train that connects williamsburg/greenpoint and points south like fort greene, carroll gardens, etc. In short, it might be spotty at night, but i can name you 4 or 5 brooklyn trains where I've had much worse waits and problems with much more demoralizing stations to wait in. I just saw a pan of this train and had to respond with my own review. First off, just because a train doesn't serve Manhattan doesn't mean it's "useless". This smacks of the same Manhattanitis that prevents some "friends" from ever visiting my neck of the woods out here in Brooklyn (and you should come: we haven't been overrun by Starbucks, 7-11 and Chase Bank [yet]). I've used the G train off and on for over 15 years and believe me, it's much better these days. It actually does run on schedule. It now extends to Church Avenue (yay!). it used to go all the way to Forest Hills or Jamaica or somewhere out there, but when it did, you couldn't rely on it anyway. If you're taking it to LIC (Court Sq) add in a few minutes due to congestion from the trains turning around (like I said, it didn't originally terminate there and I doubt it's designed to do so). The weekend breaks in service are partly due to Sandy (hello, flooding of millions of gallons of seawater?) and partially a mystery: why one has to change trains in Bed-Stuy I have no idea. However, the same complaint can be made about virtually all of the lines over the weekends. But the G doesn't go to Manhattan, it's one of the few lines that isn't a slave to Manhattan, and that's a good thing. The trolleys are gone, RIP, long live the G train. read more

I used to hate on the G like everybody else, but I'm a convert. This line is great, and goes to areas that are pretty hard to access otherwise. Yes the trains are only 4 cars long, but isn't that somehow charming? With it's apple-green logo? Come on! Weekends are dicey like any other line, and the fact that it runs solo on a lonely route through Brooklyn means alternatives are tough to come by (as opposed to manhattan where most of the time you're 2 blocks from an alternate route). Still, if you need to go from Greenpoint, Williamsburg, Bed Stuy, Fort Greene, or Clinton Hill to the Gowanus/Park Slope/Windsor Terrace area it's really your best bet. read more

The only train that connects Queens & Brooklyn (which is a wonderful thing...) but I can honestly say it was the worst train ride of my life...which is pretty EFFING bad considering I've been taking the subway since I was in 3rd grade. There was a time, not too long ago, when I would've rather walked 3 miles in the snow barefoot with badgers attacking me than taken the G train. And then my commute changed. With the bus I used to take to Clinton Hill (in my G-fearful days) severely limited post-budget cuts and an intense desire to avoid standing at a bus stop, wasting my life, missing half my class EVERY MORNING, I quit bitching and decided to take the Ghost/Ghetto/Gutter/Goner Express. And I actually like the G train now. Since my previous experience with the G was largely of the recreational, weekend/evening sort, I had no idea that this train is fucking aces for "normal hours" commuting. I've never been late to class because the G randomly stopped for 15 minutes, was too crowded to board without inadvertently giving a stranger a prostate exam, or just plain never showed (I'm looking at you, L train). I have rarely waited longer than 10 minutes on any given weekday morning, and I've rarely waited over 20 minutes on weeknights after 8. I'd say that's actually pretty consistent with most of the less-maligned trains in our fair city. That said, if I was anything other than a weekday, normal hours G train rider, I would probably set myself on fire in frustration, or maybe buy a jetpack or something. It's pretty shit on weekends - they're always doing "construction" that requires trains moving so slow you wind up listening to the mariachi band trapped on your car play like 9 songs from one stop to the next, they just cut the route basically in half, and riding a pegasus-driven chariot is still a better way to get between BK and Queens without tangling with Manhattan. I actually don't think the G is any more filthy, sketchy, decrepit, or rat-choked than any of the other lines. And I have a boner for the fact that I'm able to sit down 99.999999% of the time during my peak hours commute (fuck you, L). Beats the fuck out of most of the buses running the same route. read more

HAD TO WAIT 5 HOURS FOR IT WITH POOR PEOPLE WHO AREN'T WHITE blah blah" Seriously, just like how Mountain Dew doesn't shrink your balls(also; dick, sperm, sperm count, left hand, etc.), the G train isn't as bad as people like to exaggerate that it is. Hell, every line is an unreliable bitch when you have to transfer to another line. And late at night; have you been on the A or L lines? I can assure you, once you're done waiting for it, the G is great for short distances, and gives you a pretty good amount of transfers (G to the L, A, C, E, V, 7, F) along it's short route. It's the only BK - Queens train so it will save you the rife of an unnecessarily long trip through the city. And unlike the terribly overcrowded 4, 5, 6 lines, you will ALWAYS find a seat here. I've lived off of the Myrtle-Willoughby stop for almost 2 years now and getting to 14 St/1st Ave and Union Square has always been a breeze; usually no more than 20-25 mins tops. I don't understand why anyone would give this train anything more than 3 stars. Yes, it is the only train that connects one hoppin' area of Brooklyn to another (+ Queens). Maybe the MTA hasn't realized yet that Brooklyn is no longer a bastard-child borough off Manhattan, so that's why service sucks? I don't understand having to wait 20 minutes every night for the G while 3 pass in the other direction. I don't understand why the short train parked itself halfway up the platform at Myrtle-Willoughby when the only turnstile is at the back. I sprinted for that mofo so many times, desperately trying to make it to work on time for my shift, only to have my dreams dashed on the nasty-ass concrete. And you know no one ever steps out of the way for you, but that's a separate frustration. I'm so glad I don't live there anymore. Only consider living off this train if: -You are chronically 15 minutes early -You held your high school record for the 100-meter dash -You don't mind spending half your life waiting -You enjoy the drama of an unreliable, unstable relationship read more
