Dear G train, I love you no more. Screw you. I had to wait 30+ minutes today to get from Metropolitan to Broadway - I know, one stop. Should've walked it instead but I was afraid once I left, a train would magically appear. First you made me endure the long wait, then as the sick sadistic scumbag you are, you made me endure terrible music played over the loudspeaker (what the hell was that shit?) and the awful dance moves of a fellow passenger. I was so severely disappointed with your service today that I wanted to jump down on the tracks and just walk home from there...but then, I'd have the company of 100 rats. Yum. read more

Hey G, I know Yelp's been a bit hard on you, and I just wanted you to know a few things that I think of, whenever I take you. First off, thank you for your consistency. I know, I know, I know, you have a tough being on time, but I really appreciate how you're late by 3-5 minutes all day. I like knowing that if I show up at 11:20 on Sunday morning, you'll be there waiting to take me somewhere fun, like Sunnyside or Greenpoint, away from my rough and tumble Corwn Heights. Secondly, thank you for your compactness. I know you don't get a lot of passengers, so there's no need for you to be the same size as those other, energy wasting, trains. Good for you! Third, thanks for being so loyal. Who needs Manhattan? Right on! Fourth, I always take you to see my beloved Ariel K. I don't get to see her as much as I would like, and you really help me get there quickly. You always drop me off right as the L train arrives, and I never have to wait! I can get from Crown Heights to Stuy Town in 40 minutes! So cheer up, G, because those people who don't like you? Well, I've slowly been pushing them one by one in front of you as you enter the Classon Ave stop. So they're dead! See you tomorrow morning! -James read more

I would give you 1 star G train, but you got me to my interview from work today so I'll cut you some slack. Next time don't let the F cut in front of you. The G is one of the last trains that don't have new models, but that doesnt bother me much it just seems to be a line that should be cut if it isnt express. Hey my G(short for Gangsta...yeah Im cool) also used to take me to school so I also cannot complain there. You also have interesting people on you and go through neighborhoods in Brooklyn that are mostly populated by yuppies, hippies, cool kids, and of course the people who have been displaced for the sake of the "culture" and livability of these nabes, but I forget the word for that...hmpph no matter...3 stars for you...my G...aka always find a seat train...word read more

Oh G train, you wretched hive of scum and villainy. You don't go to Manhattan, but everybody else does so there's very little use for you. You travel to some of the scuzziest holes in the ground this side of Yoda's hut. Yesterday I was on an F train, and halfway to Manhattan they announced that it was becoming a G train. Everybody left. EVERYBODY. What does that tell you? Woe to you, G. Jim has yelped. read more

The G train is like that ex-girlfriend that I thought was treating me right when we were together. But, after we broke up, I realized that I deserved better treatment after I started dating someone else. With the G train I did not know if she was coming or going. Her visits were far and in between. You were never punctual. When she did show up, the strangest things would happen: 1) A man under the influence approached me asking for change while lifting up his shirt to show the scars of an apparent bathroom kidney operation. 2) An obviously underage girl propositioned me for s*x. 3) A legion of rats accosted me when I reached the platform in the middle of the night. 4) 5) 6) infinity) I could go on, but 40% of my crazy subway stories are with you (got to love that A & C though - better than HBO). There were times that we had plans for the weekend, but you had to cancel all of a sudden. So, I had to content myself with the lovely ride on the shuttle. Remember when we used to go from Brooklyn all the way to the far corners of Queens? Man, those were the days. I think that was the honeymoon phase of our relationship. Sometimes I question why I put up with your poor treatment. I think it was because you were the only subway on the block. Now, I know better. read more

G train: Inconsistent Unreliable When you get your hopes up that service is improving, it leaves you waiting for 45 min in the middle of the night. Its the ultimate buzz-kill, take a cab to the city if you decide to pre-drink. It leaves you with the worst feeling after missing the train, you know your ass will be waiting forever for the next one. Its MTA's bastard child, it only gets 4 cars. You are the reason that's keeping Greenpoint from greatness. The end! read more

Truly the short bus of the MTA system. I love where it would go if it ever came... or wasn't running shuttle service because of construction. read more

What I don't like: - The G seems to always come 2 times on the other track before it comes for me. Doesn't matter where I am, what direction I'm going, or what time it is. - It tends to be dirty, and the river of running water on the tracks kind of skeeves me out. What I like: - The G can get me to Williamsburg / Greenpoint/ LIC without having to go to Manhattan first. I hate having to do that. And it does this fairly quickly, once the train actually comes for you. - You can always get a seat. So basically it's a toss up. I'd give it 4 stars if it didn't make me late whenever I took it. Though my friend who rides it at rush hour swears its faster/more regular then. read more

You know what? I'm going to play devil's advocate here and insist that the G train actually doesn't deserve the bad rap it gets. OK, so it doesn't go into Manhattan. Well, OK. I mean it's not like it's supposed to go there and never runs right. It was designed not to go to Manhattan. I'm much more annoyed that it generally doesn't do the full run from Jamaica all the way down to Gowanus or Park Slope or whatever. Every other train goes to Manhattan. Most people in this city who can be confident enough in public transit not to have a car live near enough to at least one other train, or can transfer from the G to their train of choice within just a few stops. The G has drastically improved service since I left Manhattan several years ago. Nowadays I take it to the A on my morning commute, and not only is it reliable, but it actually saves time compared to my alternate route of walking to the C and sticking it out local-style. The evening transfer from A back to G isn't quite as smooth, but it's still acceptable if the weather is bad or I'm tired. Getting to Carroll Gardens, Park Slope, Williamsburg, Greenpoint, or Long Island City is a breeze, even on weekends. I'd so much rather put up with the G for this sort of thing than have to go into Manhattan to transfer out to one of these places. Without the G train I would do much less socializing in other parts of Brooklyn. What would merit a 5th star: Extending service to Jamaica. More cars. More evening and late night trains. Spiffy new trains and "The Next G Train Will Arrive..." sign boards. Transfer points between more subway lines -- the main thing that frustrates me about subways in Brooklyn is that often two lines will run just a couple blocks from each other, but there are no transfer points as there are in Manhattan. In fact, I would give like 10 stars if New York built one of those underground villages (like Montreal has) under downtown Brooklyn to connect all the various trains that run close together. This would also make my life much easier, as I could just walk home from major transit hubs like Borough Hall or Atlantic/Pacific in perfect temperature controlled comfort. read more

Get over it. The G train may be funky, psychedelic in colour and perhaps a bit...umm...inventive in its arrival times, but it's our train! Clinton-Washington, represent. Also, the G line has the funniest subway advert graffiti. This may be entirely due to the fact that I'm a grown man that still chuckles when someone draws a penis going into Elvis Costello's mouth. Heehee. read more

When the G behaves, it's actually a convenient train for me. If I want to get from Park Slope to Williamsburg, with the possibility of avoiding Manhattan and with public transportation, then the G can be my jam. Knock on wood, but so far it hasn't broken down on me. However, it is annoying when you're swiping your Metrocard as it's approaching, and know you're gonna miss it because it stops in the middle of the platform. Boooo. read more

People are always like, "Whine, whine whine! The train is so short! Bitch, bitch, bitch! It doesn't come frequently enough! Sob, sob, sob! It's so dirty, and I'm such a delicate flower!" Okay. To address the first two concerns: the train is half the length and comes half as frequently, yet it is still *not* as crowded as a Manhattan line. Did you ever think that there are less people using the G train? And that maybe the MTA does not have an unlimited source of funding? And that it is trying to use the money it has in the most efficient way possible? To address the last concern, I would say that the G is no dirtier than any other line in Brooklyn or Manhattan (except for maybe the 4/5/6). Cry me a river, you babies! read more

The G train is like that one friend that says they're going to be at your house at 9, but you know they're going to come at 11...or 12. And they might not even come at all, but you know them so well that you're prepared for this. You have 3, 4, 5 other friends that are actually reliable and who come on time. The G train might not REALLY be your friend, but you have to admit... it's always great to see them, if and when they decide to pop up. read more

WTF is the G Train?! It doesn't even go into Manhattan. The trains are too short so if you aren't in the know, you could end up running down the platform to catch your train. I have taken the G Train a handful of times and usually always had some service problem or another. I thought I wanted to go to Greenpoint but the MTA decided no, today that would not be happening. When it is functional, the trains are less frequent than other lines. G Train, you are the red-headed stepchild of the MTA. Did I mention it doesn't go into Manhattan?! read more

If you enjoy spending countless hours of your life waiting on a subway platform then use the G train. It gets an extra star for being the only train to go North/South in Brooklyn. read more

Wait...the G train exists? I have to take this train everyday to get to school and I can't wait until I transfer schools so I never need to take this train again. You will be waiting at least 15 minutes if you miss a train and this is during rush hour. If you can avoid this train, please do. read more

PLEASE extend the G in Queens!!! Great train line but the G needs to run further into Queens - like all the way to 74th Roosevelt station (like it used to!) PLEASE bring the G back to Jackson Heights!! pretty please read more

The G stands for Glacial. I swear, this train is coal powered, I usually have to wait upwards of 10 minutes just to catch one, sometimes up to 30 minutes if I am at Metropolitan-Lorimer stop. Service changes make it absolutely unusable during late nights and weekends, weird shuttle trains, closed tracks, strange transfers... you'd be better off taking a bus. Hell, when they really shut down the G for track work, that's what they do, put you on a bus! Forget the G, get a bike. Oh, I will say that the only thing I like about the G are the conductor's announcements, some are really creative and make rides on this dreaded train somewhat enjoyable. read more

Unreliable and I do not understand the route of it I guess. It could have been better planned out for Brooklyn. I do not like the long walks with the connection with the F, especially when I am alone and it is at night. read more

A friend went as the G train for Hallowe'en. When people asked what she was, she told them, and added, "Sorry I'm late, but I bet you're glad to see me." That about sums it up. Waiting for the G late at night? You'd be better off building a canoe to get back to Greenpoint. If the G train weren't the way it is, there'd probably be 40% fewer car services in Brooklyn, so I suppose in a strange way it stimulates the economy? On the positive side, I guess there's something sort of charming in a gritty, old New York way about the interminable wait for the G. Regular riders just seem so defeated and resigned to their fate. None of that go-get-'em, I-won't-stand-for-it ambition of latter day transplants. You just have to clam up and wait, while scads of rats boldly scamper across the tracks and platform. read more

Like one of the other yelpers said, if you were in SF you'd be awesome. However you're in one of the best pubtrans cities in the world, so you're hit and miss. 2 stars because even when you're late, you're faster than the bus, G. Things starting with the letter "G" that are synonymous with this MTA experience: "ghetto" "grimy" "greasy" "gone every weekend" Things starting with the letter "G" that have nothing to do with this MTA experience: "good" "great" "groovy" "goes every weekend" MTA is always working on this train, it hardly ran on weekends this summer and the B62 bus was my only alternative. The A/C works well and the cars empty out nicely between Ft. Greene and Metropolitan/Grand, affording you a seat, but those are the only nice things I will remember about the G. read more

You know, you earn two stars just because while searching for your shuttle self and later realizing your train self was still running, I ran into a dude up above drinking a 40 out of a bag, who asked me where Clarkson was and began to stroll with me along Lafayette, telling me how shitty his day was, how "this ho never calls me back," and how "my phone has one battery thing left and I lost my fucking charger this morning and I ain't gonna waste that shit on her ass cuz she's fucking my best friend anyway." Oh, and you're short. read more

Straphanger: Dance clown, dance! G Train: Calm down, bitch, and wait your turn, the G takes orders from no man! The rest of the MTA line-up knows how to behave and follow the rules, but this train is a real G. Old school, grimy, and unexpected. Although I'm a newcomer to its hustle, I'm quickly realizing that I'm just another pawn in its game. Just another fool who thought things would be different. Just another naive pedestrian who thought I could pass through its tunnels without paying it's taxes. But that's probably what the G wants you to think, its always one step ahead, lurking, having you waiting, anticipating it's next move, but you'll never know...no, you'll never know! read more

I am only giving it a good review because G train, Clinton-Washington stop, saved me form a horrible night from the hell on Earth called Club Touche. I waited no more than 10 minutes for the G to Queens and hauled ass. Yes, it is a crap shoot to wait for a G train, but your thanking the moon and the stars when it comes. read more

G, You get me to and from work, but it doesn't mean that I love you. Your trains are so depressing. I like the 70's and everything, but you have such awful lighting and colors that it makes commuting even more depressing than it normally is. In the morning you're okay when I'm still exhausted and can't really see that great, but on my commute back home at night you really depress me. But all of that goes away when I get on the L, because those trains are a lot prettier. Anyways, G, in order for us to be good friends you need to upgrade. Right now I use you but I can't say that I'm happy to! Sincerely, Aimee read more

Yeah like most people not really a fan of the G train. I mean it is hardly ever there when you really need it. Also, it is mad small short train so if you switch from the A train at Hoyt, chances are you have to run for this joint, nah mean. Last time I had to be somewhere in Brooklyn, I took a wrong turn somewhere and ended up last stop in Queens (LIC) on this route and missed the event I was heading too. I may have been slightly drunk at the time, but that is not the point. I was still confused by the route this train runs, sucka. Glad I don't have to see this train's face too often. read more

It's slow, it's short, it's over twenty years old, and it smell like a portable toilet. What's not to love?

I moved to greenpoint without fully understanding the implications of living on the g train. I have learned to live with it, but I take the bus far more often because I can easily find a schedule and know when to actually expect it! In the evenings coming home from work it's totally acceptable. I don't particularly like hanging out at court square for 10 minutes with only one half of a door open (Whats the logic on this?) But, at the end of the day I'm just happy to be sitting (which I can never do on the E) I have had some real G train doozies though.... like the time I missed it by 10 seconds at metropolitan ave and had to wait 50 (i kid you not) minutes for the train to arrive. Or all of the weekends it only runs about 4 stops. Mercifully greenpoint ave is usually safe from the weekend nonsense, but I'd rather walk farther to the 7 or wait for a bus to get where I'm going then to wait for this phantom train. read more

The G train hasn't gone to Queen in forever, but they haven't changed any of the signs in the queens station. Let me take that back, i goes to queens at random crazy hours,(during the week around 10:30). Most of the time it only goes to Court Square, i don't know who that helps. This train is right near my house and would be super helpful if it didnt run in 2 sections on the weekends. Making me late and annoyed and possible unemployed! read more

Augh!!! The G. This train is a cruel mistress. On occasion, it will come quickly, it will follow its scheduled route, it will blow your mind. It will be the most exciting and wonderful subway experience imaginable. Thoughts might flitter through your brain about being able to take a direct subway to Brooklyn from Astoria, Wiliamsburg to Fort Greene. Travelling directly through the boroughs without sludging thorugh Manhattan, how glorious! Just don't expect that kind of magic, because the flip side of the g is that when it doesn't work, it REALLY doesn't work. As in it might add 30 minutes and up to your travel time if you had just bit the bullet and taken the long way. As an aside, I think the landscape of the city would change were the g to be more reliable. I say bullet train from Atlantic/Pacific to Queens Plaza! If only... read more

Other than the Shuttle train in Brooklyn, this is the only subway line that does not have a station in Manhattan. Yes, the runt of the litter and the line that most people will use in a sentence like this: Oh no, we have to take the G-train to get to the party? When I'm looking for a place to live my only question is, "Is it on the G-line?" Yes? Then forget about it. read more

"It was designed not to go to Manhattan" -- says the overly generous yelper 2 reviews below. Exactly! And that's just one of the reasons why the G train has, and always will, suck ass. Of course, if you're from Louisiana and have not lived in NYC for more than 10 years, you will think the G train is "neat." No, it's not. I've tried to avoid riding the G train like the plague. And guess what -- it's not that hard. That's because this bizarre line that is the G is at any given point within walking distance of another line that will take you farther and, most likely, faster to where you need to go. The G train is as useless to the NYC subway system as those "please slide again" cards that have replaced reliable tokens. As useless as the station workers who sit in their booths, doing what exactly? read more

Dear G Train, You have received one star from me because... -you are so tiny that I see elderly women almost passing out running to catch you -you never ever run at the grand ave. stop to the point where I have lived here three years and I have seen you only 7 times. -meh Love, Me read more

There are A LOT of G train haters. I find most of them to be kids who went to Pratt in 1998!!! It's a reliable train. It only sucks b/c it doesnt go to Manhattan. I always find a seat, it connects to every line I ever need and it goes to good neighborhoods in the BK. Mostly, if you're hating on a train, it should be the F - the one that is so inconsistent, packed and has the worst smelling stations in all 5 boroughs. read more

I don't know about Elite yelpers who would give the darn G train a five star review, but hey maybe they have been hittin some of those scrips a bit too hard lately! G train, I've tried taking you from the L, but I don't much try any longer. If I have to go to the Navy Yard, I either run there, or take a yellow cab. Otherwise if I'm in a really mad mood I'll take the G, but then get out of the train and not know where the f*k I am. Ok, perhaps I am reminiscing before we had GPS phones. Late nite get off the train and try to find RUBULAD. what they hell is this place? I remember one winter and there was snow falling, just as there was maybe an inch on the ground, I came out of the subway and looking around I thought I was in eastern europe before the wall fell, you know back in the U S S R. 80's baby! read more

I had to go with a somewhat neutral rating because well, sometimes the G is wonderful and sometimes I wait, and wait, and wait. One weekend it took about 45 minutes for the train to come, another night (a Tuesday) there was work being done on the tracks and the G wasn't running with NO SIGNS posted, nothing emailed via the MTA or anything. None of the MTA people knew what was going on, or anything. It sucked, big time. I've always had bad experiences with the bus in Greenpoint and grit my teeth on weekends with the G... 5/8/08 - update I am revising my review, and reducing the rating from 3 to 2 stars. I waited at the G this morning for almost a half hour (maybe it was twenty minutes but still) it was a Thursday morning people and I got to work super late because of you: G Train. read more

I don't understand all the G train hate. Yeah it doesn't run as often as other trains, but its color is the prettiest one on the entire subway map! I know that doesn't matter, but I enjoy that it's the only pastel in the system. I hope the MTA keeps the extended service to Kensington when they finally finish construction in 7-10 years. I couldn't stand when I had to take the F train one stop to transfer to a G to get to W-burg after transferring from the R. I'm glad the G is helping more people not have to go into Manhattan just to travel between 2 areas of BK. Anyways, I love the G because it makes it easy to get to 2 of the best donut shops ever! Dough and Peter Pan! That's all that was needed to win me over. read more

G train, we have had a few good times (maybe one or two) and so SO so many bad times. waiting for you is one of the most horrible activities that one can participate in in brooklyn. i am sure of this. unless, of course, you magically appear on time. then, since my expectations are so low, i truly experience the joy of your service. it would be a true shame if you were to disappear. i mean that, i do. i really do. read more

The G and I have a cute little morning ritual. Every morning, no matter what time I leave the apartment, I'll swipe my MetroCard at the Greenpoint Ave G stop. This cues the first few people from the Uptown G to emerge from the stairs. Every single morning. It's my commuting curse. Then, of course, I have to wait 15 minutes for the next train to show up. Although sometimes it surprises me and shows up in 5! The G train really isn't as bad as its reputation, though. I've never had to wait too insanely long, except late nights. Don't even bother past 11pm. Take a cab! The MTA did a pretty terrible job with re-routing passengers from the G to the 7 at Courthouse Square. There aren't even any directional signs. Their makeshift sidewalk is useless and people all flood the streets and hold up traffic to get to the 7 the quickest way possible. But that's not the G's fault. The G always (eventually) gets me to where I need to go.... I just wish we could go without the mind games, just for one morning! Please? read more
