The bar room

I had a great meal at this surprisingly massive restaurant -- I guess I shouldn't be surprised, as it was indeed a freight house and uh those are large. The look of this place are perfect, I love all of the train stained glass and lofty wood n rivet look. The service here is super friendly as well, I even got an impromptu tour of the place after making an offhand comment about the train maps on the wall. But most importantly: the steak. So affordable, portions huge, and very tasty! I ordered the 'lighter fare' prime rib which was more than enough for me and came with a great side salad and a satisfying baked potato. Also peep that whiskey list -- massive! Impressive! Also hits the spot. Look, it's no thrills dining but sometimes just some good old fashioned basics are all you need. I would totally come back here if I ever find myself back in La Crosse, I love these style restaurants. I'm also a little jealous I didn't get to eat outside with the large wine barrels and the trains!!

8oz. Fillet should have been medium. Was rare.

Was, ok. Not the best steak I have ever had. I ordered the pepper steak NY strip, medium rare. Every pepper steak I have ever had was grilled with the pepper on both sides. This was just a huge amount of pepper put on after it was grilled....umm, ok. It came medium well..... My friends each ordered something different. One friend ordered the regular NY medium. He got medium well. My other friend ordered the fillet medium. He got rare.... Honestly, I was expecting a lot better. It was expensive and just ok, unfortunately. The place is packed, everything looks good. I don't know, maybe we ordered the wrong cuts and should have got the prime rib or seafood...

We got there right when they started dinner service, which was perfect timing to get a table immediately. The food was delicious and served in a timely manner! The server was very kind and checked on us periodically! The prices are high but the portions and quality of the food justify the prices! I cannot recommend this place enough.

Wow they get packed fast! Arrived right at 5pm and and the parking lot was half full already. We got seated right away, regardless of how busy it already was. Or waitress came by, gave us water, and greeted herself (Riley). We already knew what we wanted so we asked if she could take our order right away if she wasn't busy. Which she graciously did. My husband and I both got the 12oz prime rib. I definitely love the salad bar. Everything was very organized, cleaned and well put. Service was great. It was nice to see that they accommodate large parties as there were three large family gatherings next to us. For the price and portion, to service and cleanliness, The Freight house is great and perfect for a date or any occasion.

Ambiance is nice

Prime rib is outstanding!!! Always a generous portion as well :) The wild rice dish is SO good! Veggies are always wonderful and the salad bar is very fresh. We love the atmosphere and the consistency of the service as well as the food!

I ordered their prime rib. I found it tough, stringy and difficult to cut. The worst cut of prime rib that I have ever had.

The tavern and patio offer a more casual ambiance, while the restaurant itself is chic and has an element of more formality. The staff is always ALWAYS incredible and thoughtful. The food is always on point, interesting, and flavorful. We were so fortunate that they were able to seat us on the outdoor patio facing the water. This restaurant isn't just great for the views--the food and drinks here were phenomenal as well. Our appetizers of beer-battered cheese curds and mussels were so flavorful and hit the spot. We also loved our fish tacos and linguini with scallops (I absolutely loved the crushed red pepper that came with it too!). Our food all paired nicely with their extensive cocktail/drinks menu, which included many different breweries and distilleries. This is one of those restaurants you'll remember visiting forever--definitely come visit if you can!

Around the 90-minute mark, we got a text saying we were 2nd in line to be seated. When we let the hostess know, she snapped back, "That doesn't mean you'll be next." She explained--in a very rude, condescending tone--that smaller groups would be seated ahead of us if a table opened for four. Not ideal, but we stayed patient. While waiting, we noticed tables being cleaned and split apart from a larger party near the bar. I politely asked the hostess if those tables could be used for our group. She cut me off mid-sentence and spoke to me extremely slowly and dismissively, as though I didn't understand basic seating. It was unnecessary and unprofessional, but again--we stayed calm. When we were finally seated, our group was split between two different sections, even though the tables were literally touching each other. The boys ended up with two tables of their own, and the adults were placed at two tables next to them. We still had three more adults arriving, so we asked our server (who was wonderful) if we could move one unused table from the boys' area to the adult side. She said she'd need a manager. Who shows up? The same rude hostess--now calling herself the manager. We asked if we could move the unneeded table so our adults could sit together. She immediately refused and started lecturing us about "affecting her waitresses' livelihood." She insisted each waitress needed their own tables and that she wouldn't "take away" from them. She repeated "livelihood" multiple times, even though we clearly explained that we were all on the same bill and were trying to make things easier for everyone, including the staff. We offered multiple reasonable solutions: Seat us together while allowing both servers to split the table and the tips Let the servers collaborate since we were one large group Allow us to use one table that was otherwise empty Every suggestion was shut down. She told us she had been "accommodating enough already." That line alone says everything. Meanwhile, the actual waitresses were fantastic. We tipped them very well because they provided great service. Our frustration was 100% with the "manager/hostess," not the servers. We visit the Buzzard Billy's in Des Moines regularly and have always had excellent experiences. Unfortunately, the La Crosse location handled customer service very differently--and not in a good way. Being talked down to, dismissed, and blamed for impacting staff "livelihood" when we were simply trying to sit together was unacceptable. For large groups: I cannot recommend this location. We won't be returning. Do better, Wisconsin.

Frankly, the four of us were…read moreshocked that we were able to get a table without a reservation; I think that once people figure out how good the food is, this place will be packed. The four of us ordered one order of spring rolls, which were huge and deliciously fresh... is that a term? They are basically like egg rolls except fresh, not fried, so it's kind of like having your salad wrapped up in a rice paper skin! Knowing the difficulties of keeping spring rolls appetizing, without drying out or becoming so sticky that you can't touch them, I'm sure that the chef must have rolled them just before bringing them out to our table. Although the menu specified an order of three, the waitress allowed us to order four so that we could each try one. We could see shrimp mixed among the vegetables, and I think that there was pork in there too... In any case, it was delicious and it set the tone for a great lunch. One member of our group hadn't ever tried Thai food before and was worried about the heat factor. The waitress assured us that the kitchen could temper any selection to accommodate her. We ordered a vegetarian fried rice dish, and also an order of shrimp pad Thai. Both were served on platters that allowed for a huge serving. If you plan on eating by yourself, I can almost guarantee that you will have enough for two meals. Both entrées were well seasoned and very flavorful. Yes, "MK Eats" is NOT the home of the quick five dollar lunch! But the prices are more than fair and the servings are huge in my opinion hey, how was lunch?. The owners have taken the old ELITE and scrubbed it within an Inch of its life. The decor is minimal, but who goes to a restaurant for decor? The Owners have chosen to forgo the trend for those high top bar tables...thank God! The waitress was attentive and polite, answering our questions patiently. The only thing we might comment on Concerns the table setting. She brought out small dessert plates for us when she delivered the spring rolls and entrées. The spring rolls were so huge that they looked Comical on the small plate , and when we try to taste the entrées, we quickly used up the space available on those tiny saucers. Also, the table setting was made up of a fork and a spoon, but no knife. Is that a new trend or is that typical in Asian restaurants? But when the only comments after a meal concern TABLEWARE, I think we can all agree that our meal was a "win."
