I can't say it's the worst steak I've ever had but it's the worst $32 steak I've ever had. Unseasoned meat. My first time there and spent $100. Too many other places in La Crosse to try. Had dinner there Saturday night . We visit La Crosse several times a year and so glad they were able to reopen in this COVID era. Great food, great service, broad menu with many good choices accompanied by superb service. Here's why: * Wine and drink prices are fair * They let you split anything (combo plate is good idea) and get extra side/salad bar for $7 for the second person - good value * Service was attentive and felt very Wisconsin-nice * Interior is done very well * Menu selections aren't groundbreaking, but something for everyone and food is really solid. Service was great. Got sat within 5 minutes of entering the restaurant. Drinks were pretty good ya know? But the food was quite disappointing. After my wife and I received our salads, no more than 7 minutes later our appetizer and entrees also showed up. The server told us "apparently the cook wants to leave early so he made all of your food at the same time". It was 8:30 on a Saturday night. That's fine I can deal with that. But what I can't deal with is over cooked, runny scallops and the most under season steak and sides. People go to restaurants to pay to eat good food. Guess I paid for something else. The Freighthouse is built around an old train landing in the downtown LaCrosse area near Riverside Park and The Charmant hotel. It has a great ambiance and classy (not gimmicky) train theme with old brick walls, wood beams, and chandeliers that look like old train lanterns. Its one of those historic places you just have to go check out. There is a large open lounge area which I've never been to yet but the host, Mark, told me they have live music and $3 burgers a few nights during the week. Great tip! Freighthouse is only open for dinner. The serve yourself salad bar seems strange in a high end place, but it was very fresh and you get to watch the kitchen working while you make your salad and I thought that was kinda fun. Where was Gordon Ramsey??!! They also offer a house salad that they will bring you if you dont want to do the salad bar thing. I had the salmon and asparagus, it was the best salmon I've ever had. Prices in the restaurant are about $18-$40 a person. My 11 ounce salmon was $22 with a $2 upcharge for asparagus. It was very busy but the host seated us within 15 minuted as promised. Expert host, down to earth and friendly. He really made us feel welcome. read more

I ordered their prime rib. I found it tough, stringy and difficult to cut. The worst cut of prime rib that I have ever had.

Let's Start off by saying that their dinner bread is moist and delicious. The Restaurant is a Beautiful old architectural building nestled in a quant town named for a French ball game. The atmosphere is elegant and inviting. The Salad bar vegetables are fresh and crispy. The fish is well seasoned and proportioned and the service is excellent. Highly recommend this establishment for Anniversaries and special occasions. However, every night would obliterate your per diem. read more

Last evening I went there with my family and we decided it was a nice night let's try the back patio. We waited for 15 for our drinks! (It was not busy) We asked for a menu when our drinks arrived and waited 20 minutes just for a menu! The waitress's were too busy talking to friends. We joined some friend who go here often as our first time. Very nice causal up scale establishment. Some people dressed up some in hoodies and all of us eating great tasting foods. At the table we had crab legs, salmon, swordfish, and shrimp. All the full order meals were delicious and the salad bar was a nice addition. Service was spot on and timely. read more

This was my first visit to this restaurant. I ordered the special, an 8oz Filet with a garlic, tomato base rub. This came with grilled asparagus and a Cesar salad. The steak and the asparagus were outstanding. The salad tasted fresh and was topped with house made croutons. I will definitely come back the next time I am in town for business. read more

Review for a Banquet - Large party of about 13 people eating at a presentation. Overall, beautiful, historic setting and fantastic service. Our table only had one server and he did an admiral job. Food needs work: Our group had a limited menu of their smaller portions of Sirloin, Prime Rib, Salmon, Teriyaki Chicken, and Vegetable Plate. Each meal came with a salad and dessert. Bread wasn't served. The main area that needs work is the temperature of their beef entrees. Five people ordered their Prime Rib Medium-Rare and we received a range in temperatures: Mine was Rare, the person to my left was Well-Done, 2x were Medium-Well, and the last was Medium. Not one person received a Medium-Rare cut. My wife ordered her Sirloin Medium and it was past Well-Done on the verge of leather. All of the beef entrees were under-seasoned to the point of not being seasoned at all. Au Ju nor horseradish were offered, which would have really helped with seasoning. At $$ to $$$ prices for these entrees, I would have been very upset if I'd been paying the bill. Desserts were great. I enjoyed my Triple Mousse Cake. My wife loved her Tiramisu and said it was the best she'd ever eaten. I had a small taste and I agree. We highly recommend the Tiramisu, but you'll want to share it because it is a huge portion. read more

We have dined at the Freight House many and have had many good meals there,but our last visit Sunday Aug 19 was not so good. My companion and I both had the Prime Rib and were very disappointed with meal,my piece of meat was so dry and completely lacking in flavor that after 2 or 3 pieces and I could not eat anymore,the steamed vegetables of Broccoli/Carrots and summer squash were not cooked all the way through. My dining companion could only eat a very little of her prime rib also,the waiter never returned to ask how the meal was and when he did return it was just to bring the check,I mentioned to him that the Prime Rib was terrible and his response was to pick up my credit card and walk away. The first thing I noticed when we walked in was the "Old Time Supper Club" feel of this place. Dark Wood, low lighting and Sinatra playing softly in the background all brought me back to my childhood when my Dad would take Mom and me out to Supper Club near our Cottage. As soon as we reached our table, I knew how I had to start the night. A Brandy Old-Fashioned Sweet. Just like my dad! Diane ordered the same thing, but the Sour version. They were great! Each sip brought a smile to my face as I remembered how cool I thought my dad was sipping his cocktail and letting me steal the Cherries. The menu is straight to the point. No fancy molecular gastronomy or fancy little Tapas Plates here. Just big hunks of High Quality Meat, Fish and Seafood served with simply prepared flavorful sides. Our friend started with a trip to a well stocked salad bar. Diane and I chose the Served Salad option, which was a wonderful Spinach Salad with Strawberries, Mandarin Oranges and a Raspberry Vinaigrette. If this Salad was on the regular menu, I would order it every time. For my entree, I ordered A Combination of Prime Rib and Scallops. Since it was a combo plate, I was expecting a small piece of meat (maybe 10 oz.). What I got seemed like half a cow. OK, a little exaggeration, but at least 24 oz. of perfectly cooked, tender, tasty beef! .The Scallops(about 10 small ones) were sweet and went great with the mushrooms and peppers they were served with. I paid a little extra for some steamed asparagus with Hollandaise Sauce. The Sauce tasted really good on the Prime Rib. I ate all the Scallops and half my meat and still had enough leftovers for 2 decent lunches. Diane loved her 8 oz. Filet with Asparagus and Wild Rice. As a matter of fact, She impressed our waitress by joining the clean plate club! Our friend loved his Swordfish Special. The Freight House entrance is wheelchair accessible in a way I really appreciate. The ramp is integrated right into the architecture of the building so well that you don't even realize it's a ramp. Thanks to the great ambiance, wonderful food and outstanding service, our night at the Freight House was a complete joy and I hope we have the opportunity to return often. read more

I was in La Crosse Wisconsin for business meetings and decided to dine at the Freight house restaurant base on recommendations and the great reviews on Yalp! Freight house was a disappointment in general for the price! I ordered their fresh fish of the day (Halibut) and the fish was so overcooked that it was hard to swallow! The salad bar was a joke with only lettuce for greens and the toppings did not appear fresh. I am a world traveler so maybe my expectations are too high but if you are paying over $120 for dinner for two you expect to have better selection of veggies in the salad bar, a main course that is not over cooked, better wine and beer selection!!! read more

FH is, more or less, a La Crosse institution. As far back as I can remember, most people that eat out in the area will reference FH as one of La Crosse's best. It is currently undergoing a change in ownership, which can sometimes also be a change in quality but it is too soon to tell. I cannot accurately say how many times I have eaten here but, suffice to say, it is more than 50 times. I have tried most things on the menu and by La Crosse standards, it has been among the most consistent in terms of quality. Known for its steaks, I find it puzzling that FH has never brought in actual Prime graded cuts of meat; for those of you that have had a good prime cut of beef, you know what I am talking about. I suspect that the majority of La Crosse diners would not be willing to pay the premium that prime beef commands. FH provides a salad bar that is pretty good; you can select from a number of fresh toppings and I don't recall any times where any of these toppings have been of poor quality. Also, the wine and spirits selection is probably the best in La Crosse; everything from reserve cabs to single malts. Perhaps the biggest asset that FH has is the ambiance/environment. It is located in an old train depot, hence the name, that has a good amount of character and feeling. High wooden ceilings and a second level dining area. Most impressive is the bar area. The service has been mainly good with a few blips of seemingly careless wait staff having a bad day. One comment I hear from many people is that they do not care for how loud the restaurant can be. Personally, I enjoy the liveliness of the place as it adds to the environment. If you are looking for a quiet and romantic spot to dine, this probably won't fit the bill; Traditions in Onalaska is more along those lines. Bottom line, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend FH to anyone that is looking for a good dining experience in La Crosse (unless they want quiet and subdued). read more

Came in town for business and was told to go here for a steak and their salad bar. Made it over to the restaurant and ordered the NY strip and it was the most disappointing steak I've had. Between the lack of flavor and the 1/4 of solid gristle down the whole side of the steak, I've certainly had better cuts. I have been to the Freighthouse before. Never for dinner just for live music in the bar. In town for business, I thought I would give their menu a look. I didn't recall the place having such a dark feel. It was actually difficult to see the menus. The service was pretty good. We were seated almost immediately. Not bad for 8:30 on a Saturday night. Our cocktail waitress was attentive and helpful. I have to say that the food looked better on the menu than it was in actuality. The prime rib was a little tough and without much flavour. It is my guess that the meat was purchased based on cost rather than quality. When I spend $30 on a steak it had better be very good. The halibut, fresh fish of the day, was not firm. Soggy fish is not my cup of tea. The salad bar was nothing special. I have seen similar offerings at Pizza Hut. If I had seen the salad bar prior to ordering I would have skipped it all together. The music was excellent. Blue Jupiter was tight and the harmonies outstanding. Such a treat! I will probably be back. But only for drinks and live music. read more

We all had the salad bar with our meals. It was very average with fairly limited selection. My wife enjoyed the prime rib, our friends both liked their entrees of a filet and bbq chicken. This used to be the place to go. Now it has a little competition on its plate! The pros: Elegant yet casual atmosphere. Dark and romantic, has a beautiful bar downstairs where they often provide a band on the weekends. The waitstaff and service is top notch. The salad bar is always fresh and amazing. Everyone loves it. The cons: You can't make reservations so you end up filling up on drinks at the bar. (That may be a pro for some of you!) The food, particularly my favorite, the filet, is just OK. It used to be so good, but now compared to Waterfront or Kate's, it is just average. (The butternut squash served with brown sugar makes up for it!) No outdoor seating like the Waterfront. Nothing spectacular or new on the menu. In general, this is a 4 star restaurant. Nothing too mind blowing yet can still make your night feel special. read more

The Freight House is somewhat of an institution in La Crosse. It isn't formal, but its not casual. Somewhere in the middle, jeans and a polo will suffice. The salad bar isn't much to look at but for some reason is always a crowd pleaser. The fish options aren't the safest choice. The other seafood, has always been great for us. (Shrimp, Lobster, Crab) The steaks are what they are known for. Also, if you are in La Crosse and are just looking for an upscale bar and or some appetizers this is a great option. The bar is large (probably about 15 tables) and the bartenders are very well trained, as are the cocktail waitresses. They have live music one or two nights a week. I went for dinner on a Thursday Evening. I had the Prime Rib and it was great! The dinner started out with the salad bar. The salad bar had the usual selection. The only thing they could improve was to chill the salad bowls.(I wish more places would chill the bowls) The prime rib was done just right. It was very tender and juicy. The flavor was very good. I had the stuffed baked potato with the meal. The potato was good. The price was a little higher than other restaurants, but the service and food was worth the price paid. It's been nearly 15 years since I last visited. We had reservations for a large group. Our previous activity ended early and they were gracious enough to let us move up our reservations 30 minutes. The food was good. We were amazed at the size of the portions with the combo meals. Drinks and wine were good. The live music was nice. BEST TIRAMISU IN TOWN. Seriously. I've tried the Tiramisu everywhere I can in the area. One person's food showed up cold. Waitstaff was quick to correct it, but as his food arrived later than every single other person at the table to begin with it just was extra frustrating. More than one person said theirs was a little bit cooler but not worth sending it back over. The only other complaint we had is staff didn't seem too keen to replace drinks other than water. We were all having cocktails and many of us were never offered another. read more

I recently went to the Freight House for the first time and was very impressed. The food is absolutely amazing, the service was great and it has a warm, cozy atmosphere. It is definitely on the pricey side, so it is not a place I would personally go to frequently. That being said, it was perfect for a date night with my honey. The only negative about my experience, and this is my own pet peeve, is how surprisingly casual the patrons dressed. For the amount of money you are spending I would expect this to be a place to go for a special evening, not one in which you wear biker gear and men walk around in tank tops. I ate at the Freighthouse with my husband when we were in town a few weeks ago. According to the locals, this is where La Crossians go if they want to be seen 'out' on a Friday or Saturday night. As the food goes - meh. It's dark. The food is clearly more about cranking out quantity than creativity and quality. Their wine and beer selection is mediocre. Mixed drinks from the bar are good. I had some salmon special that came with something like 4 cooked cups of greasy rice. If I had to eat here again, fine, but it's not on my short list of La Crosse favorites. read more

This was my first, and last, visit to this restaurant. I had very high hopes because of the reviews, but my experience was not good. We went with 22 other people for a work celebration. They stated we couldn't get a separate room because it was already booked. Understandable, but I don't understand why we couldn't just use the separate bar area? There were only a couple of people in there throughout the night and there was plenty of seating. Instead, they squeezed us into the center of the room and the people sitting in the middle couldn't hardly get up or move. Service was extremely slow. Reservations were for 7pm and most of us arrived 10 minutes early. We basically stood crammed in the front entrance until 7:10 when they finally seated us. We didn't order food until around 8:30pm. Granted they brought out appetizers to tide us over, but normally you order and the appetizers come when you are waiting for the meal. I ordered the lobster with the filet mignon. The lobster wasn't even in the shell. I have not been to a restaurant that charges $70+ dollars for this meal and you only get the lobster meat. Also, I ordered my steak medium well and it arrived well done and dry. The server, Bonnie, took it back and returned 10 minutes later with the new steak. I cut it in half and it was completely RAW. I mean, not even pink/bloody, it was deep venison red in color. I could not believe that that was the cooks idea of medium well. Bonnie took it back again and I stated to just put it in a to go container once it was cooked more because by then everyone was pretty much done eating and I was feeling full. (when I did eat it, it was done perfectly, but I don't see why it took 3 times to get it right). Not sure if it was bad luck on my part, but I would not go back personally. read more

Traveling with family and everyone wanted to go here. I've never had a better feast in a place like this, and I've been strictly vegetarian over 30 years. Usually there isn't much at all to be foraged at a steakhouse or seafood place, to say the least; but these folk not only really thought of us, but did it with class to rival their signature surf and or turf. There was volume, diversity, nutritional awareness and almost absurd abundance; and, everything was cooked to perfection. Most of it could be done vegan, too! When our meals arrived, I thought mine was a platter for 2, and thought twice about having loaded up on the salad bar - that's most often the last stop for me. For the lady of my house, the crab legs were dubbed the best ever. All of us stopped talking for a while. This is a place where everyone in these parts can have freakin GREAT meal. Good food, great service. Yes, it is NOT a big city steakhouse (ala Ruth's Chris or Smith and Wolensky's et al), but the prices aren't 'big city' either. Prime-aged steaks, homemade dressings for the salad bar and delicious typical steakhouse sides (baked potato loaded with melted butter, sour cream, fresh cooked bacon and shredded cheddar...not to miss). I was here for my grandfather's 80th birthday, and I honestly felt bad for taking him here. This establishment is meant to be aimed at adults, which is fine. However, many of my younger cousins had the option to eat either a box of macaroni and cheese or the worst excuse for a kid's pizza in all of human history. My older relatives also seemed disappointed, especially after waiting TWO HOURS for all the food. However, from a younger adult's perspective, this place would actually be pretty cool. It is totally fine to aim your establishment at the older crowd, but the long wait time and anti-child mindset is a terrible place to bring your family. read more

By La Crosse standards, Freight House is very fancy, expensive and tasty. However, it would be nice if they served grass fed beef and more sustainable seafood (not just atlantic salmon and sea bass). However, my father-in-law's halibut was quite tasty! My prime rib was giant, but not quite as melt-in-my-mouth tender as I would have liked. Drinks are awesome (nice and boozy!). Salad bar is not bad (the first time I went there a few years ago, I loved it, but on subsequent visits, the salad greens were a little wilted and the fixings could be more diverse (maybe jicama, radishes, shredded parmasean cheese). The best thing about this restaurant is the waitstaff--friendly and professional servers who are proud and enthusiastic about their restaurant. read more

I will never be able to explain this- but this place has amazing crab legs. Absolutely incredible. I also recommend the mushrooms and steak. The drinks are also good (incredible Brandy Old Fashions). Yes, this is a fancy restaurant for La Crosse. But it is worth it. Try to stay in the bar area or the outdoor patio. The restaurant area doesn't have as nice of ambiance. We have been here for a few events and their event space was nice. It didn't feel overly like a banquet hall. It has character. Eat the crab legs. Enjoy. read more
