At the end of a nice walk - a few miles near Loch Ard - it's good to be able to kick your muddy boots off, put your comfy trainers on and sit outside in the spring sunshine for a pub lunch with friends.
Which is exactly what we did at the aptly named Forth Inn (I'll let you figure out why...).
Inside, the bar and lounge are, as one of my walking companions said, 'quaint'. Thankfully this isn't just a big chain trying to go for ye olde skool style, as I get the sense the Forth Inn hasn't wanted, or needed, to change anything for quite a while.
However we didn't linger long inside, a little warm for those of us who had just finished a long walk, and instead we snagged one of the massive tables outside - it easily sat the 7 of us but could take 10 - and perused the menu which is pretty standard stuff, with a little Scottish twist here and there (mostly in the form of haggis!).
Burgers (beef, chicken and veggie), macaroni cheese, lasagne, homemade soup, baked potatoes and paninis make up the bulk of the menu and, without consultation, we all opted for a panini, with some side orders of chips (obvs).
My choice, listed as chicken, cheese and sweet chilli sauce was basic but tasty. This isn't food with much finesse but hey, who cares? A cold drink, good company, fresh air and some simple hearty food is always a good recipe.
Sure my cheese was just a few slabs of cheddar, sure the chicken looked like it was pre-sliced, and no doubt the sweet chilli sauce was the same one I have in my cupboard at home (and those chips, I'm pretty sure I've got them in my freezer at home too) but there was nothing too offensive on offer here. Ohhh and we did get a handful of vegetable crisps as well - love the beetroot ones!
The other paninis seemed to be to a similar standard, chicken and haggis, ham and cheese, ohh and a bowl of thick homemade lentil soup, all went down well.
The Forth Inn isn't somewhere I'd seek out again but, if I'm in the area, and the sun is shining (and I can get a table outside) I'd probably consider stopping in. I'm big on expectations, and the Forth Inn feels like a place that knows its limitations, and plays to its strengths which, these days, is more than commendable.
Add in friendly staff, quick service, and reasonable prices (remembering that we are in a bit of a tourist trap) and my first impressions of the Forth Inn were largely positive.
One tiny gripe - serving chips in a glass pint tankard might seem cool but means all the salt ends up on the top three or four chips, put them in a bowl!
Ohhh and sorry, no photos, I was too hungry! read more
