For once decided not to take the easy option and turned away from Loch Lomond on a very sunny day - it was actually quite cloudy, but I am talking Scottish sunny - we headed left to Arrochar instead. I'd already scoped out a plan, and this time we would get in, because this time we'd be there right at serving time. Last time it was rammed!
I was right, it was five minutes past twelve on a Sunday and only one table was taken. Great! We'd just passed the Cobbler on the right and the tops were clear, the view would be fantastic. I even wandered round all the tables looking for the clearest view across the water before I sat down, ok I could only see the Cobbler's wife, but it was still a cool view.
It's a note your table number and order and pay up at the bar scenario. We had to get a menu first from the properly old, squeaky-floored bar. Very Heilan'! We removed the used ashtray from our table - to be fair the only used ashtray in the whole large beer garden - and perused the menu. It's a pretty standard pub grub menu, so I chose the Haggis, Neeps and Tatties (with a pepper sauce), and the Steak Pie (with veg). The chauffeur ordered the Peri-Peri Chicken Skewers, and Fish and Chips to follow...well except that it doesn't actually follow does it, they insist that if you sit outside you get your starters and mains together. Eh? Is that a good policy, naw I say!
We ordered, then sat there admiring the view, waves a-lapping, gannets a-diving, cars a-moving, and then I noticed that my chauffeur was getting a bit cute. There was a very gentle touch on my bahookie, I looked round in surprise to see I was being tickled by a huge fluffy tail. The local cat is a total moocher, so if you don't like cats be advised!
So finally I meander to the food, well the peri-peri chicken skewers were pretty good, the haggis dish was good too, I don't think it was the best haggis out there, but it was nice and there was plenty of it. The cat liked the pepper sauce too. Yea I let him, I'm a sucker for the big wide, pleading eyes.
She was very happy with the fish and chips too, the chips were thick-cut and well cooked and the fish batter was light and crisp. I was happy too, except my veg was getting cold, my steak pie had a big crust with huge pieces of steak in it, very rustic, very tasty. Both courses should not come at once though!
In summary then: great views, authentic old inn, huge beer garden, decent food, slightly annoying fluffy cat - but cute! read more
