I love this place. There are a couple of cons to staying here that I would reduce this place to a 4 1/2 star but they're not enough to reduce it to a 5 star.
Here goes:
The place is in a scenic location, quiet, intimate, and the staff are ALL very friendly and BEYOND helpful. I was here almost 2 weeks so I have a few comments.
First of all - the food! The food is top notch!
The breakfast menu is kinda small but still very good.
I only had lunch one day but the fish & chips were very tasty.
Dinner - I made it a scheduled part of my evening to be home every night just so I could be there every night for it. Faves: the Turbot and the Fish Pie, but, honestly, the food was always great.
The bar is comfy, there are plenty of gathering rooms to find solace in, there's a rocky beach nearby, and did I mention the staff? There are several types of rooms you can reserve but space is limited to 12 rooms so reserve soon if you're planning on staying here.
They also have DVD's and books for your borrowing pleasure in the Great Room on the second floor - easy to miss. Lastly, the rooms vary but they do offer a variety ranging from country modern to country romantic (4-poster bed and all). I stayed in 2 different rooms and both were very nice. Some do only have standing showers though.
My only complaints:
It is remote. I mention that because once you find yourself here for the night, you probably don't want to head back out again. We had a work gathering in nearby Helensburgh and the cab fare from the Commodore there was 30 pounds. If you're planning a getaway, it's perfectly fine.
The wifi is spotty. If you're on the bar side in those rooms, you can get a signal in your room. Otherwise, you'll need to venture to the bar to use that wifi code you can get from the desk. If you're trying to get away from your electronic tether, maybe you don't care though. Me? I had work to do so it was somewhat problematic when I shifted rooms mid-trip to the older wing. They could solve this with another wireless router though.
It is super quiet. Both good and bad here. I felt like whispering all the time but I was also happy for it at the same time when I laid down for the night. read more
