had to have my recently bought mini towed from utah to grand junction on my way home to minnesota. (we hit an unavoidable rodent along the way that punctured my radiator and dented my intercooler) we were told this was the only place that could get us on the road as soon as possible. we called AAA at 3am, and after being awake for 26+ hours we waited patiently for him to look at it. 4 hours later it still haden't been looked at and had moved maybe 5 feet even though he had 2 lifts clearly open and no appointments early that morning. still we patiently waited, went and got food and an hour after that we finally decided to just uhaul it home. when we came to pick up the car (not even 5 hours after we dropped it off) he demanded he be paid for his "time he spent thinking about it" even though he couldn't tell me how he would fix it or what was wrong with it cause he didn't look at it. he said i OWED him $150 because he jumped it twice cause it died on him? lmao i can go to walmart and get cables myself to jump it. anyways, i asked for a receipt or a quote of what he did to it before i paid him and he said "i don't fucking have that shit just pay me my money" chucked my keys at me and as i left to go see if my buddy had figured out how to get it on the trailer he started cussing us out and threatened to lock us in his lot. if you decide to do business w this guy, be prepared to get dicked around and pay too much for what you're getting. he's got a lot of foreign cars, abandoned in his lot for a reason. if i could add a video of him on here i would, he calls me a c*** and tells me to go f myself. here's a screenshot for now. read more

1986 VW Westfalia Syncro. Towed in. You removed the transaxle and were getting ready to ship it to who knows where. Fortunately we called and put a stop to that just before it was shipped off. WTF? No discussion at all in advance. No cost estimate, no discussion of options or timing or anything. No authorization by us to remove transaxle, no authorization by us to ship it anywhere. We have a very strong feeling of trying to be railroaded by you. If it smells bad, looks bad and sounds bad, it is bad. We brought my wife's car in for a Mercedes-Benz engine coil issue Steve assured us that the items were in stock when we approved the service. After two days of being late we told him that we were going to take it to another shop and to not do any service on the vehicle. When we pick the vehicle up he went ahead and did services that we did not request and charged us $715 in order for us to get our car back we went ahead and paid it. After paying the invoice we were getting ready to leave and the owner Steve in his drunken stupor came into my wife's passenger side door pushed up against her window grabbed her arm and forced the key out of the ignition. There then came a physical altercation between myself and Steve to which we had to call Grand Junction Police Department. Not only does this guy abuse women but he will break you over the coals and overcharge you for bad service. Stay far far away! read more

Instead of genuinely inspecting the car, he insists on a $7000 repair, which (by the way) is totally not necessary. His quotes for work usually cost double that of a shop with a warranty. Unfortunately, even mentioning this shop while at another shop created a bustle of complaints from other customers in the waiting room who had horror stories all around. Our truck ran into issues while in Moab and none of the shops there could fix the issues with our Mercedes. We were able to make it to Foreign Aid in Grand Junction without it shutting off on us. We were praying that they could get us taken care of and back on the road home to Denver. They were able to get us taken care of and on our way in a timely fashion. Can I give these guys 10 stars? We had a troubling engine noise in our Mercedes Sprinter RV as we were traveling through Grand Junction. I found Foreign Aid on an internet search and the owner, Steve Stewart, was able to take a quick look at it. He was very thorough, diagnosed the problem and strongly advised us NOT TO DRIVE it. He advised that though he could fix it, it was under warranty and we would be better having it towed to the Mercedes dealership in Denver. He could have ended the discussion there, but he helped us resolve all our issues past closing time and made sure we were safe and had the situation under control. When Mercedes roadside assistance called a tow company that did not have the equipment to handle our tow, Steve jumped in with a recommendation and arranged for a suitable operator. Since it was late, we had to rent a car to continue our drive home and leave our Sprintrr with Steve. To compound our challenges, we failed to leave the internal heat on in the RV and feared bursting pipes with the temps dropping below freezing. We called Steve and walked him through the process to get the heat turned on. Just to summarize, Steve did not do our repair, but he diagnosed the problem, advised us unselfishly and went above and beyond to make sure we were taken care of under a very stressful situation. Had we not followed his advise, we could have had a serious breakdown on a 2 lane mountain highway with no cell coverage. We were incredibly impressed and grateful for his kindness, knowledge and integrity. I would not hesitate to recommend Steve and Foreign Aid. If we lived in Grand Junction, he would be our go to guy for our Mercedes and Porsches. read more

I got stranded in Moab with my '10 VW GTI squealing engine and got sent to The Foreign Aid after the Arches Repair Center determined that it was an internal engine issue which they couldn't fix. To my relief, when we arrived at the lot, the place was filled with VW's, Saab's, Benz's, and a variety of other European cars. Steve was able to squeeze us in early and within a half hour of looking at the symptoms diagnosed my faulty oil separator valve. They were able to quickly install the new valve and got the car up and running in no time. read more

I thought Steve and his crew at The Foreign Aid did a great job on my Audi and the work they did on it has worked fine for me and I've had no issues or complaints. It was all periodic maintenance, but very in-depth because I was at a major service interval. What The Foreign Aid charged for the work was a fair bit cheaper than it would have cost me to go to an Audi dealer, and I used to live somewhere else so I always had to take it to the dealer there. This shop is a relative bargain, not to mention the nearest Audi dealer is in Glenwood Springs. Also it so happened that I needed one wiper blade replaced, and I was used to paying at least $75 at the dealer for these and he charged me only $25 for it yay! read more

Unlike others on this site, I've had good experiences with Foreign Aid. After another shop had my '02 Audi for two weeks and failed to fix my issues, I brought it here. Turns out the other shop put the wrong parts in the engine. My car was fixed and running well again within 3 days. Staff was polite, efficient, and clear about what was done to my car. My '86 Vanagon startedleaking engine coolant while in Moab. I discovered Foreign Aid via Roadhaus and took a risk by getting towed 150 miles based on reviews of Steve's shop. So happy that I did because Steve was amazing, saw that I was in a hard spot and needed to get back on the road. I needed a new engine coolant resevoir and noone in Moab or Grand Junction had the part. Steve went out of his way to ask buddies around town and found a used part which he then installed in a matter of hours. Not only that, but he gave me the keys to his Audi and let me go grab a coffee in town while he and his colleague did the work. On top of all that, he's just a funny guy. I've never enjoyed being in a mechanic shop so much. If you've got a VW I can highly reccomend Steve's shop. He's knowledgeable and a good guy to learn from. read more

It's been a few years since I had work done on my VW by this place, and the details might not be entirely accurate, but the bad taste in my mouth still lingers and I feel the need to chip in. My car was struggling to hold on to life for a while so I had it towed to Foreign Aid. I was told I needed a battery, fuel pump and some other miscellaneous things. I can replace the battery myself, so I said to go ahead just with the fuel pump. Took several days to get the pump in, and when it was installed I got a call saying they did the battery and the pump I told them I had asked not to have the battery done, and they insisted that what was done was done and I had to pay for it. Skip to a week later, and my car died, leaving me stranded yet again. Took it back to Foreign Aid, had some more supposed work done to the car, and after about $2000, he says my car should be fine. To this day it still dies whenever I reach a half a tank of gas. I suspect the fuel pump never actually got replaced. Whenever I mention this ordeal, I am usually met with similar stories of woe and wrongdoing by Foreign Aid. read more

My 2013 Audi S5 broke down in Montrose, CO in the middle of a cross-country trip - all of my coolant leaked out of the auxiliary radiator. Pulled into a lube station in Montrose where they told me that there was not a single mechanic in Montrose who was qualified to look at this car. Called Foreign Aid in Junction, talked to Steve, and he hooked me up with a tow driver who towed me to Foreign Aid. By the time my tow driver and I arrived at Foreign Aid (a mudslide closed the highway), it was after 5 on a Friday and the guys were getting ready for a party. Steve and his mechanic, whose name I didn't catch, offered to look at my car anyway. They put it up on the lift, took off the covers, and showed me that there was no damage to the covers. They pointed out the auxiliary radiator, which was clearly leaking fluid, and showed me that there was no visible damage to the auxiliary radiator. Because nothing was damaged, Steve told me this was a warranty repair and it should be covered by Audi if performed at an Audi dealer. They were willing and able to do the work, but would have to charge me if they did it, where Audi would do it for free. So I opted to have it towed to the nearest Audi dealer, Elk Mountain Motors in Glenwood Springs. The service department at the Audi dealer - which will be the subject of its own yelp review - called me and claimed that a rock hit my radiator and caused the damage. When I heard that, I called Steve to confirm that neither he nor his mechanic saw any damage to any part of the radiator or car that would be consistent with a "rock hit." Steve agreed, and he even called the Audi dealer and went to bat for me. The "rock," according to the Audi dealer, then became a "tiny pebble," which made a "nearly invisible" mark on the radiator. I am still fighting it out with Audi, but really appreciate Steve's willingness to examine the car for free and to try to talk Audi straight as they attempt to squirm out of their warranty obligations. I don't live in the area, but would certainly take a car to Steve again for work. read more

While driving my daughter from Southern CA to CU Boulder, our 2005 MBZ SLK 350 broke down in Grand Junction in the late evening - it lost all of its oil and couldn't be driven - luckily we made it to a truck stop where it could be parked overnight. I called Steve in the morning, explained our situation, and he immediately said for us to bring the car to him. I had it towed to Steve's place and he spent his time in the morning diagnosing what could be wrong with the car. It was not obvious where the oil leak was coming from, so repairing the car wasn't going to be a problem that could be fixed in a day. I rented a car in Grand Junction to get my daughter to Boulder in time for classes and left the car with Steve. What was supposed to be a two day stay in Boulder ended up being a week but 1) I can't complain about being stuck in Boulder and 2) Steve communicated with either me or my husband on a daily basis (multiple times a day) to let us know what was happening with the car, when the parts would be in, and if, in fact, the car was completely repaired. Unfortunately, the car has other issues and we have transported it back to CA but the work Steve did ensured we were able to safely get the car to Boulder and better evaluate our options. When Steve realized there were other issues with the car and understood we needed to get it to Boulder where we could choose to leave it sit or bring it home, he assured us that the car was safe to drive from Grand Junction to Boulder (through two big mountain passes) and we absolutely trusted him. He showed he could be trusted and he genuinely cared not only about the well-being of the car but of my safety driving it back to Boulder. Steve is incredibly knowledgeable and I would highly recommend him. read more

My '09 BMW 535 broke down on me while driving from Phoenix, AZ to Steamboat Springs... in Grand Junction.... on a Friday night at 10:00 PM. Fortunately, I was picking up a friend at the airport when it happened and so I was able to grab a rental car just before closing. Still, I needed to get my car repaired ASAP and there didn't appear to be a lot of European auto mechanic talent in GJ, much less a BMW dealer. The gal at the rental counter suggested The Foreign Aid, but I was naturally concerned about several of the existing Yelp reviews. On the other hand, it didn't appear that I had many choices for a place to have the car towed with the hope that the mechanic was 1) very good, 2) reasonably priced and 3) willing to jump right on getting it fixed on Monday morning given that I had to be back on Phoenix on Tuesday night. I'm happy to report that the service I received and the interaction that I had with Jack, the organizer and scheduler, and Steve, the owner, were entirely positive. Jack contacted me on Monday morning and stayed in communication throughout the process, providing status updates and arranging to prioritize the replacement of my alternator (which had to be delivered overnight from out of state) and battery. Despite some other challenges that Steve was having to deal with which made it difficult to get my car repaired, he took extra measures to make it happen. Moreover, I had a pretty good idea of what the issue was and what it might cost by discussing it with my very trusted mechanic in Phoenix (Ray at Scott's Motor Werks). Both came to the same conclusion of what was required, and nearly identical in their cost estimation. Ray was especially pleased to hear that The Foreign Aid had all of the expensive and specialized equipment (Autologic, etc.) required to work on BMW's. On top of all that, one of the girls in the back office even made a call to her friend, a manager at the hotel I was staying at, to ask that he allow me a late check out while they continued to wrestle with the car. Everyone is apparently customer focused in this business. If I had another issue with my BMW in Grand Junction, I wouldn't hesitate to go back to The Foreign Aid to get it resolved. The Foreign Aid is the only one I would trust with my wife's BMW! Her X5 had a valve cover gasket issue, such that the cabin was filling with smoke/exhaust. A dealership in Grand Junction, claiming to do well with German autos, replaced it improperly and could not figure out why the car was still burning oil, now smoking up both the engine compartment and cabin. That's when I got in touch with Steve, owner of Foreign Aid. He leveled with me on the problems, solution, and cost. He was honest about approximate times for obtaining parts and the repairs, and then exceeded my expectations on both. His costs were not only fair, but lower than the two other bids I obtained. We brought our car to him and he ruined the leather seat and then called us liars. I have driven foreign cars my entire life, and never once had a situation where the mechanic actually made the car worse than when we brought it in. Took our Toyota Tacoma there and he kept it for 2 days. Went to pick it up after he called and said it was ready and Steve (the owner) kept us waiting for 25 mins while he talked on the phone. Terrible customer service! Then the truck wouldn't start. Went back in the office and he said he meant to check the battery, but didn't have time. On the way home heard a vibrating noise that wasn't there before. Steve charged over $200 to change some spark plugs. Took it to the Subaru dealer and they said the cabin air intake hose was put back together wrong. So they fixed it (no more noise) and replaced the battery.
