I've driven by The Ride many times on my way to and from home but never managed to find time to…read morestop in. Well, today I did and boy am I happy I did! I met Sean who is one of the owners, and he was so nice answering all of my questions about their services and bike tune ups. He was patient and incredibly helpful, I was blown away. Having just relocated from SF which has a multitude of bike shops all over city, it was refreshing to walk into a place and not be treated like I was simply some number in line. Allow me to explain the differences. Attitude: SF= snooty, sometimes downright rude and pretentious hipsters who you know make fun of your yuppie PUBLIC bike when you drop it off for a tune up. I know it's not "cool" and heralds a hip lifestyle of riding the streets but I like it and you should respect that. The Ride= Sean was pleasant and smiled and said bring it in, we can tune it up no problem. Costs: SF= they will charge you an arm and a leg ($100+) and not tell you what the work entails. My tire was flat in a week and wanted to charge me another $100 to repair it !?!? OR they try to give you the wrong bike back that isn't yours. Seriously, it happened to me. The Ride= I haven't dropped my bike off yet but I was quoted $55 and whatever parts or extras would be run by me for approval before being charged. I'd tune my bike up more often and keep it riding better at that price! The Ride is a small locally owned business. And it's important to support such great people who only want to help their neighbors and provide excellent customer service. If they don't have it, they can order it for you or provide suggestions. I saw a GORGEOUS bike from a brand called Simcoe which looks amazing. And these guys are the only ones in the area to carry it. Sacramento seems to have a bike friendly culture, but it's attitude about biking is less pretentious and people bike because they seem to enjoy it not because it's some political statement. So go take your bike that you love and have the owners at The Ride take care of you and your happy healthy ride!

Also, the wedge design holding the seat post in kept popping out. Since it was a new bike, the bike shop was very generous and retapped the rims for free and added carbon fiber paste to the wedge. The staff was very knowledgeable and friendly, and they walked me through the fixes they did, why the tires might be going flat, and how to prevent issues in the future. I'll definitely be coming back!

After taking it apart and putting it back together (badly) three times I found Dan at Neighborhood. He did a great job while I waited. I reinstalled the hub and it is working like new. What a relief! I was able to test-ride an e-recumbents and found that with the wide and stable wheelbase, pedal-assist, and accessibility addition options, they felt perfect for my situation. They're difficult to find, let alone find somewhere where I could do demos of different options to compare. Luckily, I heard about Laid Back at my physical therapy clinic and had the chance to do all of those, plus get advice from experts about my many novice questions. I've recently been riding a bike that was passed down to me. It's an 80's road bike. Its my first…read moretime riding a bike since my old BMX bike from my middle school days. I'm in my 20s now and know absolutely zilch about bikes. My chain snapped and I brought it into the bike kitchen. I paid $10 cash for the shop fee and immediately a volunteer helped me mount up my bike and get to work. He was so welcoming and fun to work with. We evaluated whether or not my chain was salvageable, and decided we should take a few links from a chain in the back, and add it to mine. It was only $3, and from there he taught me everything about repairing a chain. He was so nice and helpful, I used the tools and he kept watch to make sure I was doing it right. Sometimes that can be stressful, but he made sure it was a fun environment and we laughed almost the whole time. I could not recommend this place more. For them, its really just about the bikes. It felt amazing to fix it myself, and learn something about my bicycle. The volunteer also helped inspect my bike to make sure nothing else needed fixing. He explained it like, "you already paid the shop fee, lets see what else we can do". I hope I learn enough to volunteer here one day. Truly a 10/10 experience.

Every second Saturday of the month, they host open bar nights with live music: check out their website for the artist lineup! One of their workshops was even a Bike Jewelry Workshop where people made jewelry from bike parts. SBK is focused on making cycling affordable and accessible while teaching bike maintenance and safety classes to help people become more independent riders. Besides the bike shop, they also do community outreach projects and are always looking for volunteers if you're interested in helping out!

They had a good inventory of new kayaks along with some demo boats. They ended up with a couple of Old Town Auto Pilots and couldn't be happier. The service was great. Anything they didn't have in stock they ordered and received the same week. Highly recommend shopping here first when you are shopping around.
