There really should be more of these shops, and less petcos the owner was extremely knowledgeable and helped us pick out a few new companions for our tank. I'm a massive fish nerd who moved to W.A from Singapore, where there are many fish stores around. Because the country is located in Southeast Asia, where many species of tropical aquarium fish tend to originate from, these businesses were incomparable to any pet store I've seen in the West--besides The Fish Store! It was so nostalgic to step foot into this shop. Not only did they have many breeds of fish that I assumed would never be available in the U.S (barring online breeders), they had such beautiful plants for sale, too. Love it. The employee (or owner) who helped me was very kind. I wanted some CPDs but he made the decision to inform me that the previous batch were unhealthy, although another employee notified him that the current batch 'looked okay'. That was a sweet gesture, and he didn't have to do that. Overall amazing place if you're into the fishkeeping hobby; this is as good as it gets, not just in the area, but in the hobby! read more

A+ service!!!! I originally went to Petco on 45th, bought a tank, filter, rocks and fish there, they all died in less than 24 hours. I went back to Petco, got more fish in exchange and they died again 24 hours. My 2 yr old daughter was very upset!!! I didn't know what to do so I drove over to the The Fish Store and the employee Mark helped me get the tank right, walked me through prepping the water, how many fish I could get, what kinds of fish, what kind of food, etc. I brought my 2 little kids there and they loved the shop! I had a wonderful experience here today. After losing my long-time beloved convict cichlid earlier this week I decided it was time for another one. The Fish Store had a large stock of juveniles and I wanted to pick which one I wanted. Unfortunately, the fish was very hard to net and it took the young man who helped me about ten minutes to capture my little guy. He was patient with me as I apologized but this was a very important purchase for me. Hopefully it will be many years of life for my new wet pet before I'll be back, but when it's time I'll certainly return to The Fish Store. read more

Awesome service and selection of fish and aquatic animals. This is definitely a store that cares about their aquatic animals and is worth going back to get more. Emailed this store and a few others a while back looking to see if they even might usually carry a fish I was looking for so I didn't waste time driving from store to store. This store was the only one to respond within a day or two and with useful information that they usually try to keep them around but only had a few on hand at the time. After receiving the email it validated it would be worth the drive and even if they had less than mentioned that there was still a chance to get 1 or 2. The staff once there were very helpful in locating the desired fish and providing information towards other fish that might be good tank mates for a different fish at home. Ended up spending well over $100 for all the fish they had that we were looking for along with some frogs and tank supplies. read more

Located right on Lake City Way, this place is pretty easy to find. If there isn't any street parking available, there is some spots behind the shop. In general, this place has quite the variety in plants and freshwater + saltwater fishes. Plants are always super healthy and I never had any issues with the fishes. For the fishes, there is a 14-day guarantee if something happens. Just bring in a water sample with the fish and make sure to hang onto your receipt for refund/exchange. Service - all the employees here are pretty chill and friendly! All of the employees I talked with were knowledgeable about fishes and plants and the thing I appreciate the most is their patience with answering the numerous questions I had. We love this store! Great prices, healthy fish and the owner is always willing to help you if you ask him. I like not being followed around the store being pushed to buy something I don't need. He also has live cultures of microworms and vinegar eels. I have both now and they are vigorous and healthy cultures without pests in them. I thought they were a little pricey but I looked online later and realized they were priced well. Especially for cultures that I can keep going forever! It was quite a bargain actually! I had such a wonderful experience here. I was having trouble with a new fish tank and brought in some water to be tested and to seek advice. After visiting another well known fish garden and being given very little guidance, I decided to make the drive down to The Fish Store. Dan was incredibly knowledgeable and helpful - a breath of fresh air. He tested my water and gave me incredible advice. The store was busy but he took the time he needed to guide me in the right direction. Customer service at its best! Not to mention, their selection is AMAZING! This store is absolutely fantastic. The prices are way better than large pet store retailers like Petco (healthier stocks as well). I wish I would have come here sooner! The owner is super friendly and not overbearing. I went in (having a tank already at home) and asked for suggestions for plants to set up my tank. He asked me about my lighting, etc. and directed me towards plants that were suitable for me. I went home, set up my tank, and let it sit for a month before buying a fish. After such a great experience buying plants here I decided to go back to get a Betta. The selection was a bit smaller than you would find at a large chain, but the fish are housed in far better conditions and their health reflects that. It has been a couple weeks since I purchased my Betta and he has continued to be healthy and active. I think he even built a bubble nest! This is a great store. I started my first aquarium eight months ago and wanted to create a freshwater planted ecosystem. The owner and staff here have helped me since day 1 and literally every living thing in my aquarium was purchased here or is the offspring of something purchased here. I've found that the people who work here are helpful and knowledgeable. The monthly coupons for mailing list members are awesome and I love their late weeknight hours. They have a great freshwater selection that varies every time I go in, and their display tanks are beautiful. Some of their stock is locally bred or even bred by the store. They have a great neighborhood feel that helps newbies like me to feel welcome and unintimidated by such a complicated hobby. Some other small stores in the area have beautiful offerings but tend to be pricier or have a pretentious feel. I don't have a betta myself, but I also really like their betta tank setup. The bettas are in small enclosures but if I'm interpreting it correctly, their tanks are all connected so that the fish are in a much larger water system. In terms of ammonia buildup and water quality, it seems much better than the cups you see at big box stores or even the 1 gallon jars I've seen elsewhere. The store's fish and plant stocks definitely change frequently, and their selection is better some days than others. I'd recommend checking back often or calling first if you're looking for a specific species. They also have a buyback program where you can bring in fish or plants you've bred for store credit. Overall, I really appreciate having The Fish Store close by and love going in even just to look at the tanks! read more

Went here back in the day when it was on Roosevelt. Got back into the hobby and decided to make a trip. I was greeted by the owner and the friendly staff. The tanks are well stocked with freshwater and saltwater and the prices are great. I like supporting local mom and pop shops. The staff is very helpful in answering questions. This trip was for plants only and the variety was great. The price for the valisneria that I got was cheaper than competitors and twice as large. I'll be returning next time for fish. When shopping for any kind of pet, what you want is a store that cares about ETHICS, and I can confirm that the Fish Store employees care about the safety of their fish as much as they do their customers. Last time in, I told my wife "I will never go to The Fish Store again". This time I mean it! Forty-five years ago, as teens, we would go there (at the original Roosevelt location) on date nights, just to look at the rows of beautifully maintained aquariums and exotic marine and freshwater livestock. Sadly, this onetime best in class business has turned into an algae covered, depressing mess. The marine inventory is limited to LPS and held in tanks that are hard to see through. The fresh side is a little better, but with limited inventory and overcrowded tanks of few species. The equipment inventory is limited to the cheapest equipment on the market and is overpriced. There are items on the shelves that look like they have been their 30 years. Anybody that thinks this store belongs on a list of ten best needs to look a little further. Never again! read more

Quickly scaled up to 100-GAL Tank, Stand, Accessories, & Cichlids (Malawi) - all purchased from The Fish Store thanks to employee Dan's Advice and Service. 15 years later, had to re-locate to SoCal. Sadly, it was time to say "Good-Bye" to the the now grown-up Cichlids and their offspring when dropping them off back at The Fish Store as I headed South. I have always love this fish store and have been going there and getting my saltwater fish and invertebrates when they were still in Roosevelt way, long before they moved. The staff are all knowledgeable about the fish and other critters and they never try to give misinformation just to get a sale. Their saltwater fish selections is awesome and they all look healthy. Same goes with their corals. I got a baby yellow tang and clownfish from them seven years ago and I still have them today! I also got a sea urchin from them nine years ago and still going strong! I just wish they were closer, but it's worth the drive. Definitely a place to shop if you want healthy fish and invertebrates that will live for years! read more

The employee's are very nice and will tell you if you can have the fish in your tank without issues. I went in for two female boesmani and the guy told me there are three and I said sweet let's get all three. Came home to find out that he bagged me two females and one male. Now I have to get more female to get my ratio right. Bummer. You think I would have paid attention but I had two kids with me and I assumed the employee can tell the difference Between male and female. Plants. Good selections but didn't have any of the ones I wanted. Didn't look as healthy as the ones in Aquarium Co op. So I passed. This fish store has been in seattle sense 1972. Located on Rosevelt way for some 50 years or so they just recently, with in the last couple years moved to Lake City. I became incredible use to the mossy smelling little place in Rosevelt that I had been going to sense my first 5 gallon freshwater tank, but I am perfectly happy with the new location. Owner is the same (over the last ten years or so) and is always friendly. The staff turn over seems to be semi-high but I dont mind everyone has been generally very friendly and helpful when ever I asked any questions. I only wish they would increase their saltwater supply, but thats just me being selfish. read more
