Had an impromptu dinner here last night with friends, having walked by to see a massive queue out the door. Always a good sign! The menu looked incredibly promising, with enough fresh fish dishes to make you think you were in the south of France, rather than Hackney! Service was a bit spotty, as we had to Keep chasing servers down when we wanted anything. Our starters arrived promptly, but were slightly lack lustre- I found the grilled prawns lacking flavour a bit overlooked, and the calamari had way too much breading- you could hardly taste the fish! Crab cakes were very tasty though, and served with a fresh tarter sauce. Mains seemed to take ages, which the staff did apologise for. My moules wet disappointingly average. I hardly got any garlic or flavouring out of the broth, which usually my favourite part - sopping all the loveliness up with chips/bread. The mussels were also a bit tough. I live nearby and come here whenever I'm in the mood for fish 'n' chips despite the fact it's not the closest chippy to me nor the cheapest. If you want a massive meal for under fiver I'd opt for somewhere on Roman Road instead as that's not something Vicky Park Village is going to offer to you. However for a little bit more (£5.95 if I remember correctly) you get a delightfully boxed small chunk of cod and plenty of chips. The cod is covered in a crispy and light golden batter, the fish is lovely and tender, never dry and flaky and the chips the same. Ketchup bottles are on the tables inside so don't bother to pay for little sachets unless you really have money to blow for no reason. Fish House also operate a restaurant that I've frequented once or twice. The food here is equally excellent but it lacks character somewhat and for the money, I'd rather pop next door to The Empress. But if that's not a deal breaker for you then I've no doubt this must be one of the better places to get a fresh seafood dinner in the East End. There is a board in the restaurant with information on where they source their fish and shellfish and it's lovely to know they try to source locally and responsibly. (Can the average local chippy make that claim?) When the weather brightens up, this place because THE place to grab a bite for the thousands of people who visit Vicky Park, especially at the weekends. So keep that in mind and be prepared to wait, possibly pay for ketchup to go and find yourself a seat in the park as there's not going to be a table inside or out to accomodate you. It also gets pretty messy when this happens as the staff can't get around to cleaning the mess customers leave and everything becomes pretty unsightly. read more

I ate here during the London 2012 Olympics & despite the time since, I still remember clearly the decor, the friendly attitude of the staff, the lovely outdoors and indoors seat, the beautiful park just a block south and just altogether the warm charming vibe. I've been really lucky finding local places that I love and the Fish House does not disappoint. I've been here quite a few times as whenever the craving for really fresh fish comes on, this is my go to spot. The front area of the restaurant is a casual fish n chippy while there is a small restaurant to the side that is simply decorated but very comfortable. White subway tiles on the walls, green glass covered tables. Some of my favorite dishes are the mussels, the monkfish, the calamari with aoili, and definitely the scallops. Everything I have ever ordered to tried from my friends' plates was succulent and perfectly cooked. It can be a bit pricey but overall it's very reasonable. The service was surprisingly quick for how many people were lined up at the chippy for takeaway too. read more

Probably a 3.5 star experience, but we don't do things by half on Yelp! Upon entering, we headed for the counter and awaited serving. There was not anybody else to serve, but we still waited for the staff to turn their attention from what they were discussing to acknowledging us. After a little while, we were joined by another customer in the queue, who the staff acknowledged and started to serve. This was not a great start, but we were patient. As the fish here all appears to be cooked to order, it was frustrating to have to wait until the previous customers order had fully materialised for us to place our order and wait for our fish to be cooked. I don't understand why they do not follow the Macdonald's way of taking orders, in that they take multiple orders and get them cooked to reduce queueing time. During the whole time that we spent here, including eating food, this process of fulfilling customer orders did not change, leading to a fairly large queue heading towards the door. When my cod and chips (£6.95) did finally appear, I was impressed by the quality of the food. I would happily give the chips a solid 9/10, however, the consistency, quality and texture of the cod warrants only a 7/10 rating. I would have loved to have tried the middle skate, however, the staff member who served us told me that middle skate was not available for non--restaurant orders. Not really sure why this is. I would return here if I was in the area, but I would not travel across town, especially. Very tasty, however I have had better for the price in London. read more

Fantastic fish and chips. I'm very lucky to have both this place and Wick Fisheries within walking distance of my house. The batter is crisp and the chips great as well. It's a little more expensive than Wick Fisheries, but still pretty good value. It can get quite busy, so expect to queue to order. There are also some nice tables to eat in. read more

The interior is sort of retro, clean and fresh, white tilled walls, flowers on the tables and a giant clock on the wall. When I came here with my friends on a Sunny Sunday evening it was bustling so it took a while for our food to arrive. But it was well worth the wait. read more

The Fish House serves some of the best fish & chips you could hope to find in all of London. Not exactly cheap at £10 for cod, chips and mushy peas, but its definitely worth it. The portions are huge so I usually go for the kids portion, at a much healthier £3.50, and its always enough for me. You can eat in the spacious, tiled restaurant or take away, and as Victoria Park is just around the corner I've always enjoyed mine there. Its not all fish & chips, you can try lobster bisque, grilled lemon sole and a good choice of English puddings like Eton mess. Not bad for a chippy. read more

The breakfast here is good, especially the eggs benedict and it's busy and buzzy at the weekends. You can opt for the restaurant side or just sit at the benches to eat takeaway fish and chips. I once tried to use a Wedge local discount card there, as they had the Wedge sticker prominently displayed on the window, but was told that 'only the manager' knew how to 'work it'. Excellent stuff. I think overall if I was just after chips, I'd head next door and order them at the Empress of India instead. For really good fish and chips, try the Britannia on Grove Road, or Gary's on Roman Road. I have eaten here a couple of times now and the fish and chips are excellent though the mushy peas were a bit damp - you wouldn't think that possible but I can assure you they were too damp. As Victoria Park becomes the hangout-de-jour for lapsed-bohemians with million pound mortgages, the Fish House is bringing a bit of real food to the table. All be it for twice the price of the chippie down the road. Still, it's a noble concept, poshing up fish and chips in artfully minimalist decor, whether you want to take away or eat in. Whilst the perfectly battered fish and quality seafood (the crab cakes are a particular favourite), are all from nearby Billingsgate Market, the brunch menu is perfect for those bleary Saturday mornings after the night before, all in a laid-back atmosphere with a tasteful soul classic soundtrack. The portions are gargantuan, side salads fresh, and although the chips could do with an extra layer of grease for the old-skool connoisseur, the dessert menu more than makes up for any lack of cholesterol. All in all, a welcome addition to Victoria Park Village's array of trendy eateries. But if you're after some proper East End fare, head to the vinegar-stained newspaper wrappers of the Britannia Fish Bar in Mile End. read more

A friend of mine had been raving about this place, and I can sort of see why - if you live a short walk away then it's perfectly nice. But for a full evening, as a destination dining room... no. The service is super cheerful, but forgetful to the point of a Victoria Wood sketch. Dishes don't appear when they should... an order for vanilla ice cream took ages, and when it came it was (horribly refrozen) coconut. 'It was so frozen it took ages to get it out!' explained the waitress. Main fish dishes are great (baked trout with bacon was lovely) and the mussels which are always on the menu are in a very tasty broth. But starters are a bit 'meh'... deep fried calamari was tired, leaden and queasy-making. As were the skinny chips with a main. It's thrifty and buzzy (though there are, predictably, toddlers still there at 10pm, dragged out by the Hackney parents who didn't realise that having kids was going to mean an end to eating out... ). me my wife and two childeren had takeway friday night. When we got the fish and chips home we were most dissopointed.The childs pieces of cod were full of bones but were fully cooked which i cannot say about me and my wifes. our cod was reaally under cooked and raw. When we went in to complain they were quite rude in there tone and explained its very busy. they offerd us 4 scoops of ice cream but give us a refund although they agreed the fishwas raw. Very disappointing. Very noisy venue inside and hit or miss but friendly service. Above all though just poor cooking and not very fresh and overcooked fish. Batter is like a thick oily crust of impenetrable yellow cardboard. Could be good if they improved the basic cooking and only used fresh fish. Has been a bit better in the past. The fish and chips here are quite good, clean and not too greasy but a little bland. The restaurant itself is lovely and been nicely designed and decorated. The staff are friendly and service was very good. What really lets it down and only 3 stars is the toilets. They are just dirty and smell. Decor is nice but ashame about the fish and chips. Been twice first time the fish was overcoooked whilst the second time it was undercooked. Chips were like cardboard in texture too and the prep and hygiene standards leavea bit to be desired. Skin on on side of the fish shows a lack of prep whilst messy eating areas show laziness on the part of workers who would rather stand and chat. Come on guys, pull your finger out. Coming from the north it shocks me places like this make it to the national press lists of best chippies this is simply by virtue of their London Location and fancy decor when what really matters is the taste. Awful service, sloppy batter, bruised refried chips and lacklustre staff. What a shame, this chippy has all the right ingredients but rests on its laurels because there isn't another fish and chip shop nearby to compete with. I'd rather make the xtra trip to Faulkners in Kingsland Road where you get your moneys worth, unfortunately The Fish House looks nice on the surface, but scratch it a bit and you'll see its not up to much underneath.
