He had been playing with a spoon and napkins and whenever it would fall on the floor, they woild bring him a clean one...just love it. They have indoor and outdoor seating. Had a reservation for here and came with my toddler and husband. The hostess was not the friendliest and was like can you agree to this sign which I wished I took a photo of but it said that if my kid was too loud I would take them outside. I agreed and I don't like that I had to leave my stroller outside in a public walkway attached to shops. That being said, I was seated outside next to the water and it was very loud out there. The heat lamp they had was old and it was so hot I had to ask to turn it off because my daughter was getting too warm. Ordered a calamari appetizer, drinks and the seafood pasta. Also had the mahi mahi. The pasta and mahi mahi were great but I had to remind the server we still hadn't gotten our calamari. Even when it came it was small in a soup bowl and it looked like it was missing half the portion. Disappointing. We made an overnight getaway to Monterey for a break from the nonstop craziness of dealing with a nightmare neighbor at home. We picked The Fish Hopper for our dinner spot, and it turned out to be a great choice. Located right on the ocean, the view is awesome. We initially sat at a high-top in the bar area, but reconsidered and asked if we could be reseated by the water, as it was a perfect night, not nearly as icy as it often gets in Monterey. The staff happily accommodated us, and we settled in on the patio. We started with a dozen oysters. Fresh and delicious. Then we split the seafood pasta. The pasta had shrimp, lobster, and scallops, yum. Their wine list is more than adequate, and the wines are reasonably priced. We went with a Coppola Cabernet, which was very good. The service was excellent, attentive and friendly. Our server Giovanni was a pleasure to chat with. Definitely recommend this fun and inviting spot when in Monterey. read more

Recently stopped by and was pleasantly surprised to find this restaurant that had an upscale menu but casual coastal ambience. There were lots of people standing in the lobby but my party and I were seated quickly. There's lots of seating inside so don't be intimidated by the lines. The table gave us a beautiful view of the water showcasing small sail boats and people rowing by in colorful canoes. The service was friendly and they moved at an efficient pace to accommodate the constant flow of patrons. The menu offers lots of seafood classics, wide variety of cocktails and wines. There was plenty to choose from which was great since I was there with my family. The food was beautiful and served hot with fresh ingredients. It was a little bland but I'm certain that it's to accommodate the various palates that visit everyday. The server came by with a fresh pepper grinder which added some extra flavor. Dockside spot for lunch - nice to be close to the water and enjoy decent seafood. It's definitely a touristy vibe and pricey for the food, but the staff is lovely, and food comes out quickly. I had the fish and chips which were pretty good - a bit heavier on the breading for my liking, but still tasty and not dry at all. The vinegar-based coleslaw on the side was complemented the fish and fries. My husband ordered one of the specials - a lobster and scallop risotto which he enjoyed. I'll be honest: if we are buying $200+ of seafood, I think the rolls should be included. The service was outstanding. Our waiter brought me a cute little slice of chocolate cake with a candle, which was really sweet. When I dine at The Fish Hopper on vacations, the main draw (aside from the delicious, high quality food) is the ocean view. Our trip to the West Coast continues, as does my quest for the best Cioppino - the Fish Hopper was the 4th fish stew I had. Scoma's was the first, and of course, set the standard. The Fish Hopper had a very good broth, and it was nice and hot. However, there was no pile of crab meat on top, which I had become accustomed to since the first 3 restaurants all had it. It did have a large crab claw, which I had to crack open. It's the first time I've had a crab leg (firmly in the shell) in my Cioppino. Because the leg was covered in broth, cracking it open made quite the mess. In addition, pulling out the small amount of crab was way too much work. I would like to say I lived in Maryland for 30 years and cracked more fresh crabs than I can even try to comprehend, so I know how to crack crab claws. The Cioppino was not the dish to perform this task. While the broth was delicious, I left none in the bowl.....I did leave behind most of the salmon and half the calamari. This was the first time I've had salmon in Cioppino, and hopefully the last. I love salmon, but NOT in Cioppino. It has too strong a taste and it becomes so mushy, it's repulsive. I left half the calamari because there was SO MUCH of it. My partner had what is represented to be the 'best clam chowder' on Cannery Row. It was good, full of potatoes, the broth tasted creamy, but there were few if any clams. The key lime pie was okay - I've always compared key lime pie to the slices I've had at Joe's Stone Crabs in Miami - which probably isn't fair, since Joe's set the gold standard. This pie was very average - the key lime had a little tartness, but wasn't light enough - there was too much whipped cream, and the crust was too chewy. While there are some redeeming qualities about the Fish Hopper, it's lacking. The Cioppino is ranked last on my list of four. read more

But I will say this: If this is "award winning", then I really need to know who gave the award, because this clam chowder is NOT good. First of all, it came out luke warm. We had to send 2 orders back, and I'm sure all they did was microwave it. The clam chowder was really thick, and it was SO rich, I could barely eat it. I ordered a bowl and could hardly finish it, it was so rich with cream (and butter?). It just wasn't good at all. AND, they don't provide crackers for the clam chowder. I came here for dinner time with my boyfriend after a trip to the aquarium. The food is PROCY and you are paying for the incredible view. As for the food itself, it's decent for what it is- the chowder is thick and packed full of clams, the ribs fell off the bone, etc but the price is a bit too rich for my taste (~$30 for a clam chowder bowl, ~$40 for the Asian style baby back ribs) and unfortunately I couldn't get past how expensive the food is. For the birthday desert, a cheesecake was given! The cheesecake is dry and honestly.. just ok but it's a free birthday dessert so you get what you get and you don't make a big fuss The decorations are minimal at the table but the view is of the ocean and seeing the sunset here is stunning. Smooth jazz is played on repeat so you can enjoy the seagulls flying about to sensual saxophone playing. Service is friendly and the food comes out relatively fast. For us being a large party we got seated rather quickly without having a reservation. Our view was amazing as we were seated close to the windows. We got to watch the waves crashing onto shore. Our food tasted fresh. We ordered calamari, jumbo prawns, clam chowder, artichoke, blackened rib eye with jumbo prawns-this particular item was a part of the Christmas menu. The view is really nice here, definitely a good reason to eat here! You can to sit right above the ocean! Delicious ravioli. I don't even like mushrooms but this was very good. The sauce was flavorful and the ravioli was stuffed with cheese. I can't remember if I ever had artichoke before either but this was definitely a good experience for me with artichokes! Their clam chowder is good too the bread bowl was very garlicky. LOL afterwards they asked if I wanted dessert and I said can I see the dessert menu? They brought out the dessert display at the front of the store. I got their tiramisu. The tiramisu was delicious! By the way, one of the workers said there is a noise policy and it seems they will seat you as far away from the other guests if you come here with little kids. Stopped by this place for lunch after seeing it the night before. My husband and I had a wonderful experience - the weather made the scenery even more wonderful. We had exceptional service from waiter Hugo and his helper. We started off with an order of calamari...YUM it was lightly breaded and deliocious! I ordered the clam chowder in a bowl and I think that's the best clam chowder I've even had. They toasted the top part of the bowl that's cut out and put garlic on it...so the dipping just put it onto another level! My husband had the fish and chips...he said the fish was exceptional but the fries not so much. He substituted the cole slaw for broccoli and that was made to perfection. Overall a great experience! Came here on Memorial Day weekend for dinner with a reservation. Clam Chowder- cup sized ( 8oz vs 16oz for the bowl) The flavor is slightly sweet as I noticed with all clam chowder in Monterey, it has bits of carrots. The flavor is pretty good but it is thickened up way too much. Macadamia-crusted Halibut- fish is good but this dish is very sweet, would prefer something savory to balance this out. Loaded Bloody Mary- I generally prefer a bold tomato flavor which is a bit diluted here. The alcohol comes through just right. The drink is more peppery than savory. Seafood Pasta- this was my favorite. The cream sauce is lightly sweet and thin but just right for me. There was a generous amount of seafood so I was happy with that. The menu is big and there are many fun alcoholic drinks on the menu. We booked the reservation stating that it was to celebrate a birthday and the host greeted us with a happy birthday. The tuna ahi poke wontons, crab stuffed mushroom, taste of Monterey, and lobster risotto were perfect portions - we ate and left no crumbs. Tuna ahi poke wontons: 10/10, generous poke portions, although some of it is tomato/avocado that totally gets away with the tuna Crab stuffed mushroom: 7/10 great when warm but okay afterward Taste of Monterey: 10/10 good dish to try a variety of seafood Lobster risotto: 6/10 lobster was hard and overcooked, but the risotto was really good. Disappointed in the lobster but scallops were perfect. Regardless of the food this restaurant is really mostly for the food and the vibes. Staff are very attentive and responsive.
