Comfortable, plush chairs to sit in, 2 televisions (one with Tampa Bay Rays playing Toronto Blue Jays), a friendly waitress, & 5% off the bill when I checked in on Yelp: this was the perfect way to start dinner! We ordered the smoked sausage with fries (husband) and pulled pork with baked potato (me). Both came with a vegetable which was corn on the cob - husband's favorite. Food came in a reasonable amount of time - hot and good. French fries tasted fresh, as if they were made here - not frozen. Sausage (not too spicy, but tasty), corn, and baked potato were all good. Pulled pork was different from Southern BBQ, but just as good. It tasted especially good with the regular signature BBQ sauce. The decor is outdoorsy, with bear & elk crossing signs. A bar sits close to the dining area. The dining area is cozy, with 4 tables for four, and two tables for two by the windows, under the TVs. By the way, bull riding was on the other TV. Music was bluesy. If you prefer eating outside, there are 3 picnic tables. I think we were sitting in the bar area as we saw a larger dining area on the other side of the bar, but we were comfortable where we were. The bathrooms are in the back, near the pool & hot tub for the attached hotel. It is your basic women's room - 2 stalls, 2 sinks, soap and paper towels. We were only in town for one night, so we could not return. If you live in Golden, or are coming to Golden, and you have a desire to eat BBQ, eat here. We got into Golden pretty late and we were so hungry and I really wanted a beer. We walked down from our hotel to this place. We were seated within a few moments of arriving and the first thing other than smoke (in a good way) that hits you is it's so hot in this place. It's pouring rain and chilly out but not enough for the need of that much heat. For all I know maybe it's because it's a BBQ joint it gets hot inside!? Our server was good she grabbed us our drinks right away and then we ordered. I got the fish burger and a side salad and my friend ordered potatoes skins with chicken on them. My fish burger was bland and greasy, thankfully it was piping hot but grease dropped off it. My side salad was good the dressing was really nice. The potato skins were great! They were literally potatoes cut in half and then stuffed with yumminess. The chicken on stop and as of course smoked and delicious. The place was packed with people. We walked to this place from our hotel in Golden. Actually we didn't plan to stay in Golden but we've got no choice as we didn't book any hotels neither in Jasper nor Banff. So we decided to be out the province and back again the next morning through the Icefield Parkway back to Edmonton through Jasper. Expecting that they have different sauces like I used to get at Famous Dave in Winnipeg so the meat wouldn't too dry as the bbq sauce that they gave was just very small amount. Foods were ok but not extraordinary. Meat was served with a choice of potato and seasonal vegetables. I thought the vegetables will be short of salad or steamed green beans. Corn was the seasonal vegetable. I never think corn as a vegetable. Corn is a source of carbs so double carbs on a meal just turning me off. Service is just so so as well not even offering to have more beers after his beer was done as my partner was actually thinking to have another beer but seeing the server wasn't pro-active, he didn't want to get another beer. read more

Couple of minor things. The French onion soup had almost no cheese. And the little cheese was the wrong cheese. Cheddar while delicious doesn't belong in French onion soup. However, the soup itself was very good. Other thing was that they charge you for toppings for your baked potato?!! I have never seen anywhere charge for that anywhere. Did not get what we ordered and the ribs were completely dried out and burnt. I went with my familiy of 5 and wanted to try everything so we got the $125 platter. This was supposed to come with brisket, side ribs, sausage, pulled pork, bacon steak, chicken wings, some veggies, fries, beans and cole slaw. They did not give us any chicken wings or bacon steak. The ribs were so overcooked and dry that we could only get a few bites out of the whole rack. See images of burnt ribs remaiing on our plates because we could not eat them. The brisket was very fatty, but ok. The sausage was fine. The pulled pork was not very flavourful, and it was just really dried out. Half way through our meal, I asked if we would be getting the wings and bacon steak. The waitress said she would ask the kitchen. She came back a few minutes later and said we got extra sausage and they were out of bacon steak. This is the kind of thing a customer should be told when ordering a $125 plate. She said they were out of bacon steak but would give us double wings now (instead of no wings if I had not asked). The vegies were about 1/2 a carrot and 1/4 a zucchini. These were not bad, but given the volume of food should have come with more. The fries were quite good, as were the beans. The cole slaw was not what we had expected (creamy and not vinegery) and nobody liked it or ate it after one bite. The chicken wings were cooked, and just salted and peppered, there did not seam to be any other seasoning. They were well cooked, but did not have any flavour other than that of chicken and a bit of pepper. I note that they sell their BBQ sauce, and I thought that we would get a chance to try it and maybe buy a bottle to take home, but even with all the meat we ordered, I don't think there was any BBQ sauce. Everything was dry and if it had BBQ sauce, it was burned onto the ribs. Everyone was underwhelmed and felt like the restaurant was basically trying to rip us off by not giving us 1/3 of the meats that were ordered. In the end, we filled up on the fries, sausage, pulled pork and beans for $150. There were a lot of fries. Even without the rip-off, the food and service would have only received 2 stars, because I don't usually give 1 star reviews unless something is terribly terribly wrong. read more

Just had lunch here as we are relocating from TX to Alaska and WOW this was good! My husband had the pulled pork sandwhich and cornbread, I had the pit salad that had red peppers, cucumbers, pickles, tomatoes, cheese, bacon bits and dressing. I added smoked chicken to it. So good! Everything just melts in your mouth. We shared the mac and cheese with bacon and green onions in it. That thing is BOMB. A bit surprised to find this place attached to a motel. Cool mural on the wall and wood decor made for a BBQ atmosphere. Enjoyed pulled pork and brisket plus the brisket stew. Enough of each for left overs the following day. Corn bread was also good but ran out of butter. Ample fries served with the 2 meat combo for 2 people to share. BBQ mustard sauce was too watery. Second time here and I've tried the pulled pork, brisket, and today the ribs. All the meat is amazing, it is smoked perfectly with just a hint of the smoke. The only thing I would complain about (I know I know) is the pulled pork doesn't come with slaw, but I saw this visit, that you can order it on the side. Wish I would have known that last time, but it was delicious none the less. The BBQ sauce they bring on the side is worth trying out, they have a spicy one that brings out the smoke a bit on the ribs and the brisket. 2.5 stars. My one star is for the service. The boys and I stopped in for a late lunch at around 2:30 pm on our return trip to Calgary back in June 2015. Apart from a couple of occupied tables, the restaurant was practically empty--we were greeted pleasantly by our server and seated in huge comfy chairs. We ordered a few items to tide us over until we arrived home. Our son's baked onion soup was a complete disappointment--it was burned and the onions were a sloppy pile of mush. Apparently, the kitchen didn't do a taste test before the soup went out to our table (according to our apologetic server, their signature soup has been burned on more than one occasion...). However, he seemed to enjoy his creamy mac n' cheese (topped with sliced green onions) with a half corn on the cob and packaged butter. Hubby and I shared the smoked chicken sandwich and side of coleslaw. The chicken was a bit dry, but the flavour combination with the bacon, Swiss cheese, lettuce and tomato was quite good. The washrooms(which were part of the adjacent hotel) were dirty and smelled disgusting. Overall, we are more inclined to go somewhere else on our next stop in Golden. read more

I realize it's not going to be like the BBQ I've had in the Southern states, I've yet ro find anything to compare. I ordered the brisket bun, which comes with coleslaw as a side. I had the Brisket. I always have the Brisket. It is fantastic, the best I've ever had. I keep coming back it's the highlight of my regular journey from Calgary to Vancouver. The reason for the one star rating is the service is atrocious, it always is and it isn't usually the fault of the server. Yes server single. There is only ever one server even on a busy Saturday night like tonight. I wanted Red Wine to drink. No Red Wine. I settled for a bottle of beer. I would have live 4 or 5 bottles but I never saw the server again. There were loads of people sitting around without drinks or even a Menu. Not entirely sure why there are so many bad reviews about this place. We visit this place every time we are at Kicking Horse. I can understand some of the complaints about service as some of the servers are younger and a little edgy, but I certainly wouldn't call the service bad. As for the food.. no complaints. Always had very good food here. The BBQ beef brisket is really tasty and perfectly done, and is also fairly reasonably priced at lunch (around $8.50 for a huge beef-on-a-bun and a side). I've also had the chicken and ribs. The ribs are on the tough side, though this is a product of the smoking process. Mine were done quite well and still pretty juicy. The chicken was again, on the tough side, but I didn't have any issues with it because the smoky flavour was excellent. Had the honey garlic sauce and thought it was solid. Their spicy BBQ sauce is also good. They also have a decent beer selection including Fernie and Mt.Begbie breweries. read more

Had the 1 pound of chicken wings. Found one of the wings was raw in the centre they didn't handle the situation well. They never apologized or said anything. The only response was to remove the remaining wings from the table and replaced them with an additional 4 wings. In my opinion that is very poor customer service. I'm a big BBQ fan and have travelled North America and sampled BBQ all over. This place makes as good a brisket as I've had or made. I had the Fire Pit Fries, a little take on Poutine with Brisket on top, some BBQ sauce, green onions and a little cheddar. It was great, a little on the salty side for me but overall great food in a town (Golden) known for a fast food pit stop. We go through a number of times per year and we'll be back. Not really impressed. Girlfriend ordered pulled pork. There was hardly any pork present. I had the brisket on a bun. Ive had some good brisket, tender, soft, and flavourful - sadly this wasnt it. I couldnt eat my brisket on a bun like an actual sandwich. The brisket was so tough i had to eat it with a fork and knife. Walked in around 8:20's on Friday. Seatings were still available but, they refused service. Said " kitchen is behind and we are not allow to take anymore orders for next 30 minutes. Please come back" Asked for take out but they refused. Wow, business must be good! Well it's our first road trip together and we decided to stop in Golden BC for lunch. A fire pit is usually a good call for good food First I started with the Hard Ass Cherry Coke. This packs a punch believe me. But I like moonshine so...... I went for it. The pickled (in moonshine) maraschino cherries were heavy duty. But delicious. I ordered the smoked chicken breast burger. Comes with fries and a side of jalapeño mayo. Yummy. The fries were excellent too. Girlfriend had the pulled pork with guacamole and salsa. She said that it was terrible and cold. I have to give it three stars. I thought it was great she thought it was not so great. We stopped by this location because it was close to a Tesla charging station. The French onion soup was fantastic! The Caesar salads had bacon ( I love bacon but not in everything) and too way much dressing. The chicken burger was good. The fish burger was ok nothing special. The baby back ribs are smoked (the menu tells you they don't melt off the bone) but I had no idea they were so hard to bite into them! Coleslaw is bland and not good. Good chicken tenders. Came here from good reviews by friends and were utterly disappointed. Service was terrible, seemed unknowledgeable about menu and drinks. Pulled pork was dry and same dishes tasted completely different from one another. When we went to pay we were charged for doubles on every drink we ordered even though on the menu they are labelled as singles, so $11.50 for each drink and not $7.50. Nothing to write home about, but I'll write this review to save others who value good food, to consider dining elsewhere. Service was average friendly but the place is nothing to mention. Hubby and I shared the $24.95 Baby Back Pork Ribs which came with broccoli and a loaded baked potato. The ribs were a BIG disappointment. They were dry and the only thing that gave them any flavor was the BBQ sauce they were smothered in. The Caesar salad with real bacon bits (or darn good imitations and false advertising) was quite good for $7.25. One son had the Fire Pit salad with chicken $9.75 but he reports the chicken was dry too, most likely cooked and sliced earlier in the day and then quickly seared. Our other son had the Beef Brisket $14.99 which he describes as dry, a bit tough, and again no flavor without the BBQ sauce. Would he order it again? No. He does report that the veggies could have been cooked a bit more and seasoned, but he acknowledges they at least provided the nutrients for the meal. Fortunately we finished our meal just before a large coach bus arrived un-announced with 40+ passengers. I felt very sorry for the waitresses and kitchen staff, but having been in the hotel industry ourselves, it's safe to generalize that the nationality of the bus tourists in general prefer quantity over quality so maybe they won't mind their dinner tonight. The chicken burger was burnt, and about two bite worthy then trash. Good caesars though. July 2015: So I have never been to Golden and stopped into this establishment for dinner. The weirdness started just after we were seated. Our drink order was taken. The place was only half full when an Asian party of eight came in. I don't know what happened but our waitress/manager started yelling at one of the men and once they had left she told us and other customers she told the man to Fuck off! WOW! Totally uncalled for. So we waited a half an hour and had to remind our "waitress" about our drink order. We placed our meal order and waited as we watched others being served around us. Each one had the wrong order. Finally after one hour and fifteen minutes the final straw. Our "waitress" comes up to us and says "so is that everything would you like your bill?" I told her we hadn't even been served yet. She runs back to the till and as we watched you could see her hands on her forehead. She forgot to put in our order. Now remember we had heard her give every excuse in the book to the others around us about their meals and why they were wrong. We heard her tell one customer she had been there since early in the morning and she had told us she just got on shift. To top the whole nightmare off as we are sitting at our table my wife pointed out a bug under our table that looked like a cockroach. I took a photo of it and it actually turned out to be a beetle. Regardless, we dropped a ten dollar bill and walked out to the "waitress" yelling don't leave please don't leave. Insult to injury. All other restaurants were closed. Koodos to the "Pantry" next door. The manager felt sorry for us and let us in. Today we went through Golden and realized we forgot to post anything last year.
