Having worked in the food industry--as a a bus boy, waiter, kitchen help, bar back cook, sous chef, chef in food recovery, and through running a non-profit--I've come to realize that for me, it's not just about the food. What truly makes an experience memorable is the service and hospitality, especially when people go above and beyond without being asked. On my way back from Alberta, I was passing through Golden when traffic came to a halt due to an accident. I decided it was the perfect time to stop & top of gas Next to the Petrol Station was Time to Eat Legenz. Reluctant but positive I decided to try the plane out. From the moment I walked in, the service stood out. My server was warm, attentive, and genuinely caring. When I mentioned I was craving some soul food--something heartfelt and not just "cookie-cutter"--she took it upon herself to ask the owner if they could do something special. Even though being hesitant under her recommendation I had ordered a burger, while waiting and having a smoke she came out & said that they can make a unique, off-menu dish tailored just for me. Within minutes, I had an incredible meal in front of me. The gesture itself spoke volumes. It is not about food but about the hospitality, kindness, and willingness to make a guest feel valued. That's the kind of service you can't put a price on. So, while I can't fully review the menu itself, I can absolutely give this place a five-star review for the hospitality and human connection they provided. Review Visit: July 13th, 2015 It's time to start talking aboot my trip through Canada. What a LEGENDary and craZy time that was. 50 hours from start to finish. That was our drive from our home area to our destination in Canada. Of course, that was just the drive time and didn't account for the stops along the way. Most of the stops were legendary but not as legendary as the Z. We were coming to the end of our drive to Nakusp, BC and we needed to fuel up for the last few hours of our drive. I was hungry. The kids were hungry. My cousin and his wife were hungry. It was the perfect time to stop. We quickly used google to look at what was near us and I can't remember who stumbled upon LegendZ as a place to eat but after a round of votes, it was the one we ended up visiting. Weary and road-lagged, we walked in and were greeted with that friendly Canadian attitude we've quickly come to appreciate. The feeding grounds of choice was a table due to the number of us. As we were seated and given menus, I looked around and couldn't even begin to digest the 50's American culture that was present. LegendZ felt like it belonged on Route 66 somewhere. As we adjusted to the diner seats from the van seats, we cracked open the menu and started looking it over. All of us quickly noticed that the offerings were very similar to what you would find in a diner in America. Cheap and greasy food offerings with a touch of hometown/local flair. There was your standard burgers and sandwiches. Your usual all-day breakfast items. Poutine (which I hadn't had at this point in the trip). A big variety for a small place. Orders were placed and within maybe 15 minutes, our food was brought out to us. Kind staff and fast cooking for a table of 5. Not too shabby. I ordered a Bacon Cheeseburger with french fries as I needed something that would pack a punch since we still had 8 hours of driving to go. When the food, we all kind of smiled that exhausted smile that comes after such an arduous trip. What I was expecting was nothing like I got. My expectations were a bit low due to being tired and wore out. I thought it would be your run-of-the-mill food where it doens't blow your socks off but doens't leave you wanting more. That first bite in to my sandwich, I knew we made the right choice. The bacon was thick and semi-crispy, just how I like it. The burger patty was juicy and seeping in flavor. The combination of those two things plus the toppings and condiments made for a heavenly taste. It came with french fries, which were crinkle cut and alright. It's hard to make fries exciting and these were standard fare. Being the last stop before we hit Nakusp, BC... I am not sure if it was pure exhaustion or what but LegendZ was loved by us all. At this point, we had been on the road for maybe 45 hours and still had 8 hours to go. Maybe that factored in to the food tasting extra delicious Maybe it was delicious on it's own. All I know is that it was just one of our many stops in our epic two-week cross countries trip. read more

We stopped here and should have trusted my gut when i walked in and saw all Indian/Pajeet staff. I looked around and saw dirty floors, missing floor tiles and the place looked dingy and dirty. We gave it a shot and were disappointed by the frozen and prepackaged food we were served. Frozen crinkle fries, packaged burgers, the soup was from a bag, the sauces and vegetables were warm. We all felt ripped off and felt sick for the rest of the day. read more

We usually stop in Golden on our way back home but this was the first time we decided to try this diner. It's accessible because it's located right next to the highway. It's an old diner that has that 50s vibe. It's clean and roomy but it needs some maintenance. The staff was nice and helpful. The menu offers classic options for a diner. I got a cheeseburger with fries. It was a good burger. Prices are right. It is a nice place to stop to get some rest and eat something before heading back to the road. read more

The diner is right on the main highway in Golden so access is very easy. We stopped for lunch on our way to Banff. It is an old time diner with vinyl booths and black and white linoleum flooring. Nothing fancy. Service was decent. We shared a strawberry milkshake made with real ice cream. It was served in the old style metal milkshake server, filled almost to the top and had 2 straws and spoons. We also shared a hamburger. The food was decent but not great. The fries were not crisp but were limp. There are not many options on the main highway but we did not want to drive into downtown Golden. It was decent but if we had the time we would probably drive into town. read more

I'm really surprised by the bad reviews for this place. I stopped in here on my way into B.C. We were seated right away and our drink orders and food taken right away. There was about 5 other families in here. I ordered the beef dips sandwich and my partner ordered the chilli cheese dog on special. Food came fast and hot, tasted really good. Everyone was seated apart as per COVID regulations. The cook was masked up, the waitresses were not (didn't bother me though). Only feedback was the place coulda been a tiny bit cleaner. I loved the atmosphere. It seems like a very good place to eat and attracts so many tourists. I loved the burger. It was very high quality and delicious. The fries and onion rings were really good too. We also had zucchini sticks and it was really good. After the meal, We ordered milkshakes too. The milkshakes were ok and to be honest I didn't find anything special about the milkshakes although they were not bad. Next time I probably won't get the milkshake and just go for the burger and the sides. Overall it was a good experience. I found the staff very polite and helpful and friendly. read more

DISGUSTED. HUMILIATED. I just experienced THE WORST customer service I've encountered by far. I have food restrictions and this diner in Golden BC did anything but to accommodate my restrictions. They charge me for a over cooked pork chop and served me vegetables that I told them I cannot eat!! I was trying to be patient and not at all difficult but my server made it very difficult to accommodate such minor requests. They charged me $20 for eating nothing that was asked for and didn't even take it off my bill. Also I could hear management speaking loudly about my restrictions so that the entire diner could hear me and stare at me. I was so embarrassed! I just wanted to get the heck out of there. Legendz Diner in Golden BC needs to treat people like human beings and learn how to run a business. You disgust me. The WORST EXPERIENCE I DO NOT RECOMMEND!!! To say these it's serve "real burgers" is like saying RC Cola is just like the original. The burgers are the mushy processed kind and the fries are dry and unsalted. Cool atmosphere, but you can get a better burger at DQ next door. read more

A hidden gem indeed. We walked in after a long journey hungry for a freshly cooked hot meal. We were pleasantly surprised with the large menu. We stopped here years ago and when we saw the sign we pulled right in. It was during the pandemic so we were shocked that a large family was seated in the isle in the centre of the restaurant and you had to squeeze by them to access your table! The food was mediocre at best. Rueben was fatty, beef dip looked like they forgot the beef and the fries were tasteless. This place has so much potential but needs to up its game. #106: Located in Golden, British Columbia on the left side of Trans-Canada Highway 1 near the Shell gas station as you go west, Legendz apparent claim to fame (for me) was it's 15 oz Cadillac Burger and the 20 oz Lincoln Burger. On Wednesday, 23 October, I had the latter. 20 ounces for 20 bucks. They should call this the 20/20 Blinder because after you eat this burger, you won't see straight for hours, possibly days. The burger is huge and adding bacon and cheddar cheese to the mustard, ketchup, lettuce, onion, pickles, tomato makes it a huge ass burger. They have what I call the Ora Ida fries (the rippled fries) and lightly breaded onion rings. For drinks, they have the typical soda products from the fountain. Did not try the milkshake but did overhear a customer saying it was one of the better shakes he has had. The service was good as the waitress was nice enough to explain the daily special (that day was the meatloaf) and the breakdown of the 2 largest burgers mentioned earlier in this review. All in all, not a bad experience considering the stress I was under from my car (1997 Honda Civic) continuously overheating. Maybe next time, I'll feed it the 20/20 Blinder (currently called the Lincoln burger) and then it will be much happier. read more

I cannot comment on the food as we decided to leave without ordering. The decor from the road attracted us, and we immediately started hyping the idea of milkshakes and "real" burgers to the kids, trying to avoid yet another stop at MickeyD's. After long hours on the road, it looked like a welcome pit stop. Inside, the first thing to greet us was two waitresses fighting with each other over dirty tables - two red flags in one, no thanks. I went to the washroom and had to sidestep one of the angry waitresses, who shared her look of displeasure with me, as the walkway between tables is so small that we couldn't simply pass each other. The washroom itself was dirty, and when I joined my party, they were unhappy with (you guessed it) the dirtiness of the table. I couldn't sit down in my chair without blocking two-thirds of the narrow walkway, which meant the waitresses would have had to walk around several other tables to get past me, presumably with more glares. We just all looked at each other in dismay and agreed it was best to leave, even with hungry kids needing uprooting. read more

This used to be a hidden gem in Golden BC. Our goto when we travelled through. But excruciating slow service. And having to ask 3 times to even get a coffee was capped by mediocre food. One of the wait staff was helpful and cheerful. But was negated by a young lady who was surley and rude to us, other customers, and the other wait staff. Can no longer recommend this place. Sadly it has tons of atmosphere and interesting decor. But head to the A&W instead. read more

Absolutely awful and mediocre food cooked by people who know nothing about cooking.. We ordered veal cutlets with mashed potatoes and the cutlets came out in 3min (aka warmed up in the microwave) soaked in oil (probably half of a cup of it if I squeezed both cutlets) and mash was disgusting too, watery and tasteless, I spat it out into a tissue after the first bite. Two softs drinks, a basic hotdog ($3.50 in downtown Vancouver) and these cutlets with mash cost us $40. Just wanted to cry after this 'wonderful' meal.. read more

Located right on the Trans-Canada highway on the western side of Golden, I don't really recommend stopping here. First of all, meals range from about $10 to about $20. I felt it was overpriced for what you got. Beverages also appeared overpriced. The atmosphere is that of a caricature of a classic diner, according to my husband who is of the vintage to have been to actual classic diners before they were supplanted by modern fast food. I personally also felt it was more a reflection of the time than a reproduction of the time, by people who had never experienced that time. The beef dip was adequate. 3/5. They toasted the bread, but only a little so it didn't detract from it. The beef was shaved to the right thickness. Served with the right amount of au jus. The fish and chips special was just okay. 2.5/5. Very greasy, but filling battered (not beer-battered) fish. Served with tartar sauce that seemed more like mayo with relish than anything that really goes with fish. Started with bland Sysco or Campbell's or whatever cream of turkey soup (I was amused to see the review that said it was likely Campbells, since my husband and I were debating exactly that, was it Campbells or Sysco or GFS). Side was those crinkle-cut from frozen fries. Also served with really bland but inoffensive coleslaw. By the way, crinkle cut fries are a total diner no-no. They did not exist at that time period. They were in that time period made from fresh potatoes that were peeled and sat in a bucket of water, until they were cut and again sat in a bucket of water. But I guess they weren't trying for diner food, just food. Good fries would have made a better impression on me. The booths on the red seat side of the restaurant are a bit small, so choose a table if you've got the middle-aged spread going on. The restaurant did have flavoured sodas and milkshakes and other fare you'd expect at a "diner." They also serve breakfast from 07:00-17:00. The washrooms were clean and comfortable, with a change table available in the women's that I saw, and one may or may not also be present in the men's. I wanted to like this place, but I just didn't. On the off-chance that anyone, ever, feels the need to order liver and onions, than this review is for you! My sister and I shared the liver entree, as there is really only so much liver a person can take. Just because I crave it once in awhile, don't completely discredit my taste in food just yet! Breaded liver and fried with onions is just that. Delicious, not overly oily and flavourful. It also came with bacon. Unfortunately the potatoes tasted grainy, with a touch of sawdust. who could forget the unforgettable mush of powdered starch. Fries freezer burnt - onion rings crunched, sick veggie burgers...DH had a chicken burger....no comment - no napkins, no quality checks, no water refills, tonnes of un-bussed tables and turds left in the filthy toilets. Fun place to eat! Vanilla, chocolate and strawberry milkshakes are HUGE (they bring the boys to the yard)! The fries are good but burger buns are lame white buns. The place is starting to get a little rundown though. Seats with tears, worn table tops and peeling paint. The bathrooms have been updated. The 50's style should stay but the restaurant needs a renovation we think. Overall, a decent stop for meal. read more

Had a Tunamelt and my partner had ham and cheese omelet. We got here via long ass road trip and have been to a few places already. The breakfasts here are quite good, albeit a tad over oily (What do you expect lol). The decor is very lively and makes you feel like you've stepped through time. Waitresses are nice and pleasant, very welcoming. Had a strong sense of community, lots of people knowing each other. My partner states his food was good and better than one we had earlier on the highway. Overall enjoyable and no major complaints Edit: : Looked at the other reviews, this restaurant isn't deserving of THIS much hate. Whenever we're travelling through the area we stop at this diner. More so for the atmosphere than for the food. It's sort of an iconic diner with the cars and the signs and the booths. You can get an old-fashioned milk shake in the metal blender cup and certain things on the menu are vintage menu items done well today. For example, the Monte Cristo sandwich or the beef dip. It seems to me to be part of the experience of passing through Golden. It's conventionally located right on the highway and has plenty of parking nearby for RVs. read more

Stopped August long weekend on the way to Vernon, seeking to fill a cheeseburger sized void in my stomach/soul. First impressions weren't clear by any means. This place has a pretty kitschy, well-worn, vibe but looks to be cobbled together over the years by real people, with a real interest in 50's drive-in kitsch (rather than a bunch of crap purchased from a chain restaurant supply house). The place wasn't crowded, but had a mix of truckers, locals and other traveling families. Had a great, albeit pricey, chocolate milkshake. Served in the metal blender cup with whip-cream and a cherry it ended up being well worth the $6.50. A cheeseburger and crinkle cut fries looked like pretty standard diner fare, but had a couple nice surprises. The patty didn't inspire a lot of confidence at first blush, but brought a great beefy, griddle caramelized flavor. Veggies and cheese were pretty standard, but the soft fresh bun was certainly better than average. Crinkle-cut fries were crinkle-cut fries...it's a diner. I'm going to go out on a limb and suggest that this probably isn't a place to go for a creative salad or sophisticated sandwich. But as a road-trip alternative to fast-food, it is definitely worth a stop. read more

Considering the neighbouring selection along the trans Canada highway, this place is ok. It is a diner, so don't be looking for gourmet or healthy. They do a great job of diner food like burgers, sandwiches, milkshakes and all day breakfasts. We didnt order the milkshake but after I saw one parade by, I wished I had. The prices are a little more than they should be for what you get but I figure its the "tourist" kind of location that drive things up. They honestly would have a slightly higher rating if the prices were lower by $1-2 per item. I had a burger-good-just the right amount of grease and crinklecut fries with gravy. Food was hot and fresh, My BF had a rueben-the bread looked multigrain to me vs. Rye but he didnt seem to mind. They had a limited kids menu but also had other kid friendly choices like Pizza. The staff are "seasoned" and friendly-our server looked like she came with the place and was very funny. The decor was typical campy diner and has seen better days but was clean. If Legendz were in the city it probably wouldn't do as well but as one of the only "non chains" along that strip of the trans Canada highway, it has a bit of an edge. read more

My wife and I stopped by on our road trip from Seattle to Calgary. The staff was very nice to us. I know this because they spent almost half an hour helping me find my wedding ring that I dumbfoundedly dropped in between the booth and the wall. They went as far as almost taking the whole thing apart to help us out! I really appreciate the lengths they went through. As for the food, it's diner food! Fills you up. It's not bad. I had the liver and onions and it was great. The second time we came, we both ordered the Eggs Benedict. Was not the best eggs benedict I've had, and a bit pricey around $11.50 each. The hollandaise sauce tasted and looked more like white gravy. All in all, the staff was friendly, the atmosphere was good, and the food is what you can expect. We like it! read more

After 7 days on the road driving from Ontario during a pandemic we just wanted a normal meal instead of eating takeout hiding in the car / hotel room. Was really the least sketchy-looking place that wasn't fast food so we gave it a try. The kids ordered ice cream floats - they made them with SELTZER!!?? WHO DOES THAT!!?? It was disgusting. I had a Club, it was "meh..." son said his burger was "gross" and refused to eat it. Daughter had chicken fingers, "it's edible" was her review. Don't recall my wife's meal but she wouldn't eat it either. After an $80 tab we ended up leaving most of it uneaten on the table and stopped for junk food on our way back to the hotel.
