Not sure about the business model for this restaurant, as it certainly seems out of the way. On a Wednesday night in early October there were only 10 others dining. Perhaps there are more tourists in the area than I realize to support this ambitious restaurant. Began with the beef carpaccio. There were a lot of flavors happening, which while complimentary, wound up being overpowering. The beef was fresh. The bison short rib was noted as being braised for eleven hours and that it would fall off the bone; a knife was still needed. It was comfort food - like a pot roast. The artic char had a mild cream sauce and came with some small potatoes. The dish very much needed salt, pepper and some other spices to give it some zing. Both dishes came with a mix of roasted carrots, beets and parsnips. All the red wines by the glass were from BC. The Indigenous World Merlot was decent, if a little flat in its flavor profile. read more

Yelp has a lot of 5 star reviews for Golden which I have trouble believing but Cedar House is honest to goodness freaking amazing. The location is a puzzler because the chef could probably work anywhere because he's so talented but obviously wanted a slower paced life away from where more restaurants of this caliber would be found. That being said finding this place is a total gem. A bit spendy but all things considered I'm not unhappy to pay for what they deliver. You have a bit of a trip outside golden to get here on the highway to radium but it's worth the extra effort to find it. The restaurant is gorgeous - a converted rustic cabin with a ton of attention to detail and the view and surroundings are just breath taking. It ALMOST felt like a private dining experience except there was one other couple in the other room but we were so separate it could have been just us, our server and the chef. Something I remember fondly is the wonderful playlist - I would love to know what some of the songs were. Despite the food and atmosphere the restaurant was casual dress which worked for us on our visit because we got in from a long drive a little later than we planned and didn't have time to suit up. Now for the food which really was the best part and why someone might go here in the first place. The amuse and bread set the done for the meal perfectly. The food was very earthy and wholesome with lots of berries, root vegetables and seeds and I don't think it's accidental that I think of these things as things I might have foraged in the woods where were situated. Well, assuming I could forage VERY well and then also cook them up into some amazing heaven. I would see the same ingredients show up in other dishes and love how different they tasted while staying along the same flavor profile. Really well thought out menu for sure and the ingredients are high quality and thoughtfully chosen. Something I most appreciate is being a vegetarian here didn't make me feel like an afterthought. I could eat both the soup and salad and there was an entree that was as special as any of the meat options. I don't know where the idea for the veggie steak came from, but wowsers do I wish I could take some basic produce and make something like that. The steak was literally a thick cut slice of from a head of cauliflower then then seared like a steak and seasoned to be amazing. If someone told me they wanted me to pay $30 for a slice of cauliflower I might have told them where to go but this was truly inspired and packed with flavor somehow. I don't even normally like cauliflower, I don't dislike it but I don't seek it out and I just loved this preparation. My husband pointed out that the "steak" was laying in a think sauce (I actually think it was more of the soup) and it made it look "bloody" like a steak might. Although that's not the kind of thing a vegetarian likes to think about, I think it's also very cleaver. Overall this place is just divine. We ate here because we stayed here and figured out after it had such a highly acclaimed restaurant which was totally just a happy accident. We'll be coming back next time through Golden. read more

This was my second time here and it did not disappoint. The dishes are beautifully crafted and flavourful. The portions are ample and the ambiance delightful. The elk was so tender it fell off the bone. The veal ravioli left you wanting more. The beef tenderloin was cooked to perfection. Every dish had a brilliant array of vegetables that tasted like they were picked that day. Definitely worth the drive. read more

There's absolutely no reason this place shouldn't be number 1 in Golden. I've eaten a lot of delicious meals and this one definitely earned its place amongst the top. We stopped by after a long day of driving, on a recommendation from a local. We weren't overly hungry so ordered two appetizers and a main course between the three of us. While we were waiting we were brought warm bread with an amuse bouche platter. Such a treat! For our appetizers we ordered lamb chops and scallops. Both were flavoured and cooked to perfection. For our main course we got the beef prime rib, which he plated in three separate plates as we were sharing. I couldn't rave more about the beef, it literally fell off the bone. We finished the meal off with the egg nog creme brulee, they also gave us tasters of the other the two deserts; a gingerbread cookie with a chocolate ganache and warm berries with ice cream. Finally they sent us home with a loaf of home made bread, which was completely unnecessary but a really nice surprise. I know the menu is seems small and a little expensive. Came here for our anniversary dinner and it was fantastic! Service, ambiance, and food were all above expectations. We were nervous about taking our 1.5 year old with us since we were on vacation, but they had a high chair and were able to make a simple pasta for him. They also didn't leave him out of the soup starter and palate cleanser sorbet (which he ate all three). Highly recommend this place if you're staying in Golden or Kicking Horse. read more

When a local recommended this restaurant, and her friend commented "it's okay to moan while you eat, it's that good, and I do every time"... you know you can't miss trying this restaurant! As vegetarians, we decided to email beforehand, and heard right back from the chef, Corey Fraser, that he would have a few tasty vegetarian options for us; we were in. It was amazing and in particular the flavors were, as my wife says "mouthwatering". Try it when you're in Golden and see what you think. Wow, this was a great find for us. The food was excellent, even if the menu was a little small. The service was impeccable, our server was friendly, attentive and went out of her way to provide me a written recipe for the maple whiskey sour, which was the perfect balance of sweet, sour, and creamy. This is my absolute favorite place to eat. Even after having just returned from Europe, I can still say so! I am sensitive and choosey about dining out, but was immediately comfortable at Corey and Annie's place. The setting is serene, the view is startlingly lovely, the gardens and grounds inviting and unpretentious and the restaurant itself a peaceful and calming place to be. Vegetables and garnishes are grown in the back garden tended by C & A. The scallops were perfect-- done in a cauliflower and vanilla bean sauce. This menu is presented simply and dishes appeal to a large variety of eaters, palates and diets. The food, drink and dessert menus are so creatively curated, and the setting, ambience and service: perfect. It is always completely worth it to drive a couple of hours out to the Cedar House for the promise of a great meal and a great experience. Really fun cocktails, great local wine list, incredible seafood and risotto! Chef Corey not only consistently produces delicious food, but always outdoes himself with his artistry and presentation. It is obvious how much care goes into every patron's experience at this establishment, I can't wait until my next visit. Catch the sunset after dinner from two reclining, shaded lawn chairs or play badminton and bocce ball (games provided) on the lawn. Thank you Corey and Annie!
