I had been meaning to try this place for a while so last week I stopped by, and I wasn't disappointed! I got the catfish sandwich with everything, and it was delicious. I always get their 8 pieces cat fish meal it comes with fries an 2 pieces of bread their fish is good their fries they give a large portion of fries so the food will fill you up i dont like the fries personally i just get them because they come with the fish an its still the same price an my boyfriend likes fries with his fish but we had better wendys an McDonald's fries are way better I also had the don't recommend them I also have their potato salad it was okay it tastes like grocery store potato salad I also had the barbecue wings did not like them don't recommend them wasn't up to my standards but it's to each his own its just my opinion I dating like them read more

My daughter and I were in the neighborhood and were looking for fast, good, and reasonably priced food. We read the review for The Fat Fish and decided to give it a go. Just to forewarn you all, my family that raised me is Southern and the fried fish I've always eaten is a delectable Snapper. The fried Snapper I'm used to eating is: crispy, light, and very well seasoned, a 2:1 ratio of flour to cornmeal with the latter being the 1. This is not the case with TFF. They go heavy on the cornmeal and while that is okay with the prawns it definitely distracts and over powers the delicate Red Snapper. It also tasted a little off. So It's a definite never again on the Snapper but I may come again for the prawns. Now before any of you think I'm some overly picky novice being extra dramatic about some damn Red Snapper, let me say, "I'm old sckool Oakland" I grew up calling Oakland "tha Town" and it was, "Town biznezz" 'erythang. I rocked with O.G. Emma's (truly the best fish on the planet-sorry Aunt Imogene) in West Oakland, on MLK and 20th or 21st. After Emma's closed down I rocked with Hanks (great contender), on MacArthur and 61st in tha East. Now these were establishments that I'd eaten from numerous times and never been disappointed, especially with the Snapper but they're establishments that are no longer around. I've lucked up and found 1 or 2 adequate replacements but for me the Fat Fish won't be that. If I'm in the area and I want prawns maybe. If I want truly well fried and seasoned Snapper, not so much. If I'm spending my hard earned bucks I really want to enjoy what I'm eating. Usually order the special that comes with 2 pieces of fish and fries. Love it! It's only about 5 or 6 dollars which is impossible to find now a days and the fish is so good! What a great newly opened cafe. The food is good and you get more than enough. The choices are many. The weekday specials are great. I had the short ribs, rice and greens and cornbread. Quite good. If wasn't for the cake, which is outsourced by Cassandra's Cakes this place would have ZERO stars! How are the fries more seasoned than the fish? And the fries were over seasoned while the fish was highly under seasoned. The crazy part is they give you nothing but fried food and only 3 napkins!!! The Po'boy sandwich seemed to be on previously frozen bread and they had the nerve to serve whole like a hoagie. We had to ask for knife, which they had none of so the cook had to cut it. WTF!!! The salad is a sad bunch of shredded iceberg lettuce with chopped tomatoes and onions on it. I love fried red snapper so I wanted to try a place in the East Bay that I've never been to and Yelp led me to Fat Fish for lunch today. I had a Red Snapper combo and the fish was great seasoned just right, and they gave me nice portions. I'm currently full and happy so there's nothing else to write but I certainly plan on coming back to bring friends with me. read more

It's not the most amazing food but you can't beat the price. It's well worth every dime you are dropping. My only complaint is that parking can be challenging to find at times. Very disappointed! They are passing tilapia or whatever that fish is as catfish. Is there a law against that?? If not there should be. Honestly wasn't anything special. The tarter sauce has an odd flavor And didn't taste like any other tarter I've had. It wasn't awful, just different. I tried the Alaskan pollock and it tasted ok, the prawns were better in my opinion. I also had the potato salad which tasted like store bought which was a little disappointing. I've passed by this place hundreds of times without going in, but one day I had a bad case of the munchies and had to get my grub on, and I'm so glad that I did or else I would have never found this diamond in the rough. The restaurant itself is very small, but their lack of space never seems to hinder their ability to deliver top notch products. The menu here is very diverse, they are anything but limited to fish, as they also carry plenty of chicken items as well as non-fishy sides like hush puppies and jalapeño poppers. I've only been here a handful of times, but will definitely return for more of their tasty treats. I grew up in the South and Fat Fish makes my need for Southern-style fried seafood go far far away. Love this place. Their catfish, prawns, oysters (and anything else they choose to fry) are done perfectly in a cornmeal batter that leaves the seafood tender and without a speck of grease. The staff are super nice, the place itself is clean, and I love that I get a choice of different kinds of fries - regular, garlic, and sweet potato. They also have onion rings (not so great). Lastly, they make hush puppies (aka fried balls of cornmeal goodness) - this made my heart go pitter-pat. Sadly, their hush puppies are on the bottom side of just okay - I'd give this five stars if the hush puppies were as good as the fish. This place is so good that we have to limit ourselves to going only a few times a month - otherwise it'd be every day and I'd weigh 500 pounds. read more

It didn't look or taste like catfish, but it was piping hot and tasted fresh with a crispy bland semi-heavy coating. (I probably should have asked about their spicy seasoning.) I don't think the prawns were fresh. They were butterflied like the frozen kind, and on the thin side. Probably wouldn't order them again. The owners here is rude and had an attitude when I said I didn't want my order nomore. The burger I got was pink in the middle and I don't ear raw food. The man Ben got highly upset and said it's already made and I'm wasting food. Excuse me so you would get upset if your customer tell you the meat is not cooked well that's crazy. This not my first time attending the fat fish. I've been here previously and had okay experience. The young lady that took my order was very nice and professional. She seemed to be training another young lady at the time, but I happened to had spilled my drink and it was all over my clothes I was denied a bathroom by the manager in the most rudest way. Mediocre at best. I know it a fried fish place but the greasiness was out of control. The cardboard boat had a puddle of grease in the bottom. Fish was ok. It has a corn bread batter, I was expecting a beer batter. The chicken wings chewy and tasted remotely of fish. I upgraded to garlic fries for $1.25 extra, NOT worth it. They just dump a table spoon of minced garlic over you standard, pre frozen, thick cut, fries. Not worth the money. Probably won't got back. read more
