Still loving The Exchange 5 years after my initial review! Why? VIDEO GAMES! This is one place I don't mind looking for previously-owned merchandise. They clean up what they sell and make sure it's in working condition before they put it on their shelves. That's huge. I really hate picking up a used game or system and having to spend hours cleaning it because it's way too disgusting to touch until I do. They also guarantee their previously-owned games. I know this because I stopped in last week to buy their Crash Bandicoot PS1 game. It was $30 (yikes) but the guy explained why and also mentioned the guarantee. When I brought it home to play I noticed it kept freezing in the same spot. It must have been a flaw in the resurfacing process. Either way, they took it back and gave me a full refund, since it was something wrong with the game. They do have a restocking fee if you return something that isn't faulty, just FYI. Having had to return a dirty system (in better condition than when we bought it) to another local place down the street because it was faulty and only being offered store credit--I can tell you I really appreciate the refund. The Exchange is the one place I make sure to stop in whenever I'm visiting Cleveland. Particularly, the one in Lakewood. I've been there countless times and always had a wonderful experience. For a while, I've been meaning to write a nice review for this store. Unfortunately, most thoughts of praising this place have gone out the window after this (pardon the word choice) exchange. All it takes is one person behind the register to ruin a place. As usual, we got greeted upon walking in. As usual, there were people working the floor; eager and willing to help when I wanted to look at something. As usual, I found something I wanted and the guy working the floor graciously took it up to the counter for me. So. I get to the counter and say I'm ready to check out. The guy (I think his name was KB - no relation to the now defunct toy store) said he'd ring me up. The interaction that followed is verbatim: Me: I'm getting this and I'm getting that game right ther-- KB: Right where? There's lots of games behind me. Me: ...there on the top middle shelf. *points to the game* KB: Alright. Me, thinking to myself: (Geez. That was unexpected. Maybe I could lighten the mood...) Me: I mean, I could have just said "It's the best game of the bunch, of course." KB: Matter of opinion. Me, thinking to myself again: (Ok, KB is a DB.) KB: Your total is... There's no need to continue. I think you all get the point. You know what? I get it. We all have bad days at work. Lord knows I do. But, don't take it out on someone who is just making a purchase. Someone who is buying inventory so there's less goddamn clutter in your store. Someone who has been going to the Lakewood Exchange for nearly TWENTY YEARS. I wasn't even exchanging any used media! We visited this store while waiting for a table at Melt Bar and Grilled. Our wait was an hour, so we walked down. I am definitely glad we went! I really only looked at cds, but there was a huge selection of dvds (box sets as well as single dvds for $1), video games, and records. I was able to find Frances the Mute by Mars Volta and Nirvana Unplugged for $2.50 each (for cds). Definitely check the bargain tables. In my opinion, the cds in the cases seemed kind of steep for used cds. Considering that the technology is becoming dated, but not to the point where it's trendy again, I expected all of the standard cds (i.e. not deluxe/ special edition, etc) to be $5 or under. Unfortunately a lot of the cds within the cases/ not on the bargain tables were $12-15. i can buy cds brand new at Best Buy for that. For some reason, I owned "Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back" on DVD. An OK movie to be sure, but to own? Why the hell did I buy "Wag the Dog"? And did I think I would be watching "American Beauty" more than one time in nine years? Long story short, I culled my excess entertainment crap, and they gave me cold, hard cash for it. I then used the cash to buy heroin (kidding). They actually gave me more than I expected (money, not heroin). This place also has the best used CD/DVD selection I've seen in Cleveland (so far). So if you want to buy back all the Juliana Hatfield CDs that you impulsively sold your sophomore year in college, they're probably here. read more

Well run store located in the heart of Lakewood. I swear they have one staff member for each customer, but hey that is a good thing right? Great selection of anything used. I'm not much of a "Gamer", but I stop in once every couple months to check out their SNES options. The majority of the games I buy for Super Nintendo are 1-4 dollars. Believe it or not they have a huge selection. The return policy is 30 days for those games that don't work. They also carry CD's, DVD's, PS3, XBox, Vinyl, and every other collectible you could think of. If you are bored in the area just stop by and check it out. The place was packed on my only visit on a Saturday afternoon. a few boxes of $1 bargain bin was average, a couple local cds, very few items from 09/10 in the boxes, most of it was mainstream or no-name acts from major labels from last 90s early 2000s [better than Parma's, not as good as N. The Exchange is a pretty solid store with a good selection. They have a bunch of vinyl (both new and used) with very fair prices. I've taken home more than a few jazz and rock records. The staff is extremely helpful and very nice. They seem like the kind of people you'd want to talk music and just hang out with. The customer is treated very well. The store can get a bit crowded at times, but it is in a nice location. I will typically wander into The Exchange on my way to The Root. They are pretty much the perfect couple in my book. I like to spend a lazy Saturday or Sunday afternoon at The Exchange for a few hours so I can dig through their enormous amount of $2.00 and below vinyl records. The employees try to put them in some semblance of order, but I think that since they are the el-cheapo vinyl, they don't focus so much on them. I liken my adventures at The Exchange to treasure hunts! I have found so many fantastic albums in the $1.00 bin! Styx, DeBarge, Bread, Hall & Oates, Kenny Loggins, Barry Manilow, Nazareth, Linda Rondstadt and so many 70's/80's compilations it makes my head spin like a record! Last time I was there, I splurged and got Michael Jackson's Off the Wall on vinyl. $5 was a little rich for my blood, but I decided what the heck. I will treat myself! I had been looking for that LP for years. I guess I should also mention that, along with their great supply of cheap vinyl, they have loads of used video games, movies, CD's and those off the wall toys that are always a hoot. I go to The Exchange regularly for CD shopping, and occasionally for PS3 games and movies. Their DVDs are incredibly cheap and good condition, so big points for that. Their CDs are usually reasonably priced, too, and for me that means under $15. I've found some real gems for only about $6. Their CD selection is impressive, too. Something I am still not comfortable with this franchise is that almost everything is in a locked case. I agree it's good for security purposes but there have been too many times when employees are whizzing by to go restock something or they need to go back to the register...and I'm just standing there waiting and staring at a glass case of CDs or DVDs. Every other CD/Movie/Game store I go to has open rows of merchandise and it's so convenient for me to browse, get a better look at everything, and purchase at my convenience. That being said the staff here is very nice, just sometimes a little too busy, because this place is often packed. The Parma store has more attentive employees but I find this Lakewood store to have better stock. read more

I've had as many or more negative experiences at this location and other Exchange locations as I have positive. In general, their prices are comparable to ebay for video games, both Classics and games for more modern systems. I've purchased perhaps a half dozen defective games over the years. I don't expect the employees to test every single title but the return policy is terrible. Defective merchandise must be returned to the location where it was purchased. I've also noticed bootleg Pokemon GBA games priced as though they are authentic. I suspect this is just due to ignorance rather than malice. They do have a large amount of LPs, CDs and movies, so perhaps it's worth visiting for music and other non-gaming media. This was my worst experience of a trade in ever. I had to trade in Call of Duty Advanced warfare and decided to try this place out instead of my usual visit to Gamestop. Boy was that a mistake! First off, I was told I had to wait 15 minutes while they processed the trade in. Why the hell do you need to process a trade in??? Look at it, see if it's good, take it, give money. Anyway, so I browsed the shelves of completely outdated CDs, DVDs, and even records. After 20 minutes I was called over. "20 dollars." 20 dollars? Are you fucking kidding me? The game is brand new and just came out 2 months ago! Even GameStop would have offered 25.75 (I checked their website). So I say fuck it and accept my money. But I actually recieve 20.01. And when I say no keep the cent, he gives me an attitude "take the penny." By that time I had become completely fed up with all of their shit, walked behind the counter, took my game back, threw the 20, and stormed out. I had a very unpleasant and unprofessional interaction with Maggie. I went to return a game counsel that I bought three days earlier as a surprise for my husband, and we ended up deciding we really don't need it. When we went to return it they let me know 15% would be taken to restock it...which made no sense to me since it literally had not been taken out of the bag. When I questioned why, and that the receipt didn't state that, nor was I told that when I purchased the counsel, Maggie stepped in. She snapped that it wasn't something they need to say every time someone makes a purchase. When I told her and I didn't agree with that, she REFUSED to give me her managers contact information or name. Not only that, but when I asked if her manager could contact me, she said she could take my information but couldn't guarantee they would get back to me....That is absolutely ridiculous. So not only did "The Exchange" basically steal 15% from me, the "second in command" Maggie, couldn't even give me the proper customer service to reach out to, to further discuss my disappointment in her professionalism and the fact that 15% was taken and not properly disclosed. I do not recommend shopping at this location, or with a company that can't even provide proper customer service. read more

Being a past resident of Lakewood I've always known the Exchage as the place to go for trade in's. Which at one point was true but that isn't the case anymore... Fair warning DO NOT go here if you are claustrophobic. The store is very small and everything is behind cases, making a good browsing really hard. if you want to see something you have to find someone who works there, which as well can be difficult as the customers look the same as the employees (be on the look out for a lanyard around their neck) I'm not a fan of store credits and often this is what they offer with trade ins. Great store with a good selection but often staffed by surly, rude, or unfriendly employees. When you call, they do things like pick up and the phone and set it on the counter without even answering or asking if you can hold. You can hear them ringing up people in the background while you say, "Hello? Hello?". I have been to this store dozens of times (I like vintage games) and the service is a crap shoot every time, you never know what you're going to get. Games are usually priced a fair bit more than ebay or half.com but there is still something fun about buying a game and taking it home and immediately popping it in and playing. And the games are solid, I've never had any issues with any cartridges not working - more than I can say for ebay and half. The selection is impressive and it's great to window shop all the vintage games and see what your own games are roughly worth. read more

A few of the Cleveland area stores expanded in 2014 and I have to admit being surprised that a store that deals in old, dated technology is still thriving and not declining like the falling prices of everything digital. I don't have a hard drive full of recently released movies, just a strong prey drive to find stuff I didn't know about. No need to compare with Amazon unless you're on the fence about a purchase. There aren't many places in town that offer store credit that is 30% more bang for your buck than cash. Selling your stuff is best done on a day when your skin isn't thin though it's probably to your benefit to pre-shop the store before you trade in your Game of Thrones blu-rays... they may already have 3 copies of season one. Negative review: great looking store and lots of cool stuff. However, I was not impressed with the customer service. I brought several games and movies in along with my PlayStation 3 and a few comic books. The offer I was given was $140 store credit or $100 cash. Talk about low balling people on their items but also not willing to listen to what the customer has to say. I left with my stuff but was very upset about how I was dealt with. This place had a pretty large and varied stock of video games and accessories. The prices are what you expect these days with eBay and amazon being around, but there were a ton of budget and even dollar games to be found. I picked up a Neo-Geo Pocket Color with 4 games for $50, and I think that's a pretty reasonable price. I also picked up 28 $1.00 games and a couple at 2.50 as well [NES, PS2, XBOX]. The staff was knowledgeable and friendly, and the store was clean and organized, with game titles in alphabetical order. The only downside to my visit was that the price labels they use are a real pain to remove without damaging the [Label art on the NES/Plastic covering on the PS2/XBOX] games and left a sticky residue behind. Hopefully they will use better tags in the future. I was in on vacation from Milwaukee; so next time I'm in Cleveland I would most certainly visit again, or recommend someone else there. This is by far the worse store I have ever been to. They sell mostly ruined dvds and scratched up games. They write perfect condition on the case but never show the customer the disc before taking(stealing) your money. Then when you return the broken game they knowingly sold you they call you a liar and say you are breaking them your self. The person Adam is very rude and treats the customers like crap. He told me I couldnt return anything else there after I spend 500 dollars and more than half of what I bought didnt work. No one tests the games or movies before reselling. They walk around behind the counter like they are someone. When in actuality they are low paid workers with no education. DO not shop at this store. One of my favorite places to spend a free half hour to browse through what's new. The staff is attentive and helpful. I never leave the store without an armful of goodies! This store can be of special interest to shoppers who like music, movies, TV shows in recorded form. A big part of the inventory is made up of video game equipment and soft ware. Also available are a variety of DVD, CD and record players, i-phones and other currently popular gadgets. If you're looking for something specific, chances are it is available, but sometimes items can be rather pricy. Considering that most of the entertainment media and merchandise has been gently used (most items are not new or factory sealed), finding a particular CD or DVD at or above list price can be a bit shocking. Any stiffly priced individual items are more than "made up for" by a steady and generous offering of very reasonably priced items. As the name says, The Exchange is always happy to take your related items on for resale, offering very generous trade amount, or will make a slightly less favorable cash offer. It all depends on what people bring in, not everything will be accepted, but what they do accept, they will offer a fair price for. I love their vinyl department with the classic rock LPs and those golden oldies. The selection of memorabilia and novelty items is enormous. You can get your Elvis T-shirt, Beatles mugs and Madonna dolls along with Star Trek character boggle-heads and SNL DVD trivia game, right from the line-up on the upper shelves. I shop at The Exchange at last 3 or 4 times a month, and I can highly recommend the experience to any entertainment media enthusiast. read more

They have a large collection of everything under the sun and its a pretty cool place to pick up a cool game from your past, or maybe some skull candy headphones. I've gone to this store FOREVER! Never once had a bad time, friends with employees and whatnot....but the last time I went in there I was laughed at! I honestly don't think they knew I had walked up to the counter but that't besides the point. I had never thought that a store that I bought loads of stuff and sold just as much stuff (at prices that were on the low-side...but they were friends and I didn't need the stuff) would be so rude that I know have to think about going back. I may be over reacting but I was honestly so upset when I left the store the last time that I may just make the extra trip out to the N.O. store!
