The Encore at night (Provided by The Encore Website)

The Encore at Stratford has a lot to offer. As such having only sampled it for the night i feel i will not be doing it justice. However this much was apparent from my first visit. Situated in possibly the best place in stratford for a pub/restaurant (right next to the beautiful river and the theatre), offering a very wide selection of wines and spirits and boasting a very appetising menu The Encore is certainly an attractive draw. It is also however one of the most expensive pubs in Stratford. Unlike many pubs in the area there did not seem to be offers to help relieve the pressure on the wallet either. I have heard it said that service can be lacking, to be honest i have never been more impressed with the service i received in a pub, though we did have to go to the bar to order the staff were friendly, drinks were brought swiftly and any extra demands we might have of them were met with a smile. For smokers and those who just want to take the air by the river there is ample outside seating, for those who want to stay indoors there is plenty of sofa space (with the main dining areas being upstairs). I was also really impressed with the music, you so rarely notice music in a restaurant (and pubs often just rely on a jukebox). The Encore did neither, playing a great variety of really excellent tunes all night. I was impressed with the area, the interior and the staff, if it hadn't felt a little akin to bankruptcy buying rounds i probably would have stayed all night. I hasten to add that though i left half the population of stratford seem to think me mad and happily remained. Definitely worth a try, i leave the the need for an "encore" up to you ;-)

I can't say enough good things about this place. We stopped in while visiting and were so glad we did. Everything we ate was delicious and had fresh ingredients. The decor was beautiful and had fresh flowers on each table. The prices are quite fair and the portions are great. I ordered the mushroom appetizer with raclete cheese and it was delicious. It had some type of cream sauce on it that I couldn't get enough of. For the main course the fish cakes were nicely cooked and served with a pea purée. I don't even like peas but I cleaned the plate. I highly recommend this place to anyone.

The pub is wonderfully located off the beaten track in the Old Town part of Stratford and is a regular haunt for many of the locals. There is a pool table and dart board and on various days of the week hosts a number of local leagues which merely adds to its genuine feel of a good old fashioned English pub. There is a large garden which basks in sunshine throughout most of the day (when the sun shines) and when it rains a large permanent canopy keeps you dry. The kitchen never fails to produce wonderful food and on certain nights of the week offers a special themed menu, sometimes Curry night, sometimes Gourmet Burger night and sometimes fish night. Every other Sunday the pub hosts a quiz night which is good enough to challenge the Little Grey Cells but relaxed enough to be a fun quiz to take part in. And all in aid of the Air Ambulance. The New Bulls Head (formerly the West End) is quite simply the best pub in Stratford.

Feeling a little swanky at it but still, cheaper than most of the traditional pubs surrounding it, a good area to get up and strut your stuff, and close enough the other aspects of "nightlife" in town (not to mention close to bed if you've opted for one of the travel lodges). No.1 felt like the perfect start to an active stratford night. Now i wouldn't normally review a place i had spent such a small amount of time in (without much of a yelp head on for it either - no food, no carefully laid tests for the staff). But one act from the staff compels me: We were walking into town, unsure where would be open, it was really very late. Two intimidating looking bouncers are stood outside No1 (as is their job). We pause across the road, wondering at a country bar that needs bouncers like that, i was about to walk on when they bellowed, "don't worry its nice in here, come on over!" Both with beaming smiles, one walked us in and pointed us to a good spot to sit and the other instructed my friend as to where to smoke (out the front it seemed was less windy that night). I was amazed, to be honest i'm used to bouncers being short tempered and sometimes pretty brash with you (thats just part of city life!). This is the first review i've penned where the security made a place worth visiting for me, well done guys!!
