What a wonderful stop. We were visiting Shakespeare's birthplace, and after enriching our minds we definitely needed a drink. Without hesitation our guide immediately recommended the Old Thatch Tavern. First of all, it is centrally located and easy to find. Once there you're taking by the decor and homely feeling. The staff were amazing. I wasn't drinking hard liquor and they guided me through a variety of Apple ciders that were delightful. They made the entire experience 1000% better. Their advice and knowledge really made the stop one of the best drinking experiences we had in England. Little by little more members of our crew continues showing up and eventually we had a full blown part going. Again, it was a blast! I can't wait to go again, make a stop at the Old Thatch Tavern and relive some of the memories. read more

Had a lovely visit to Stratford-upon-Avon for my birthday. This pub looked lovely from the outside and we headed straight there after our delicious meal in a nearby restaurant. It was 10.25 on Wednesday evening, February 25th, but we were turned away by the young barman, as he said he had already called last orders and wasn't letting anybody else in. Now, my husband and I were very disappointed, as everywhere else in the town had been so welcoming and accommodating. We walked across the road and had a few drinks in another bar, as there are plenty of nice places to choose from, BUT, if I was the owner of this establishment, I would not be best pleased at young bar staff turning my customers away. That is a lot of revenue to lose over the year if this is happening every night, especially with the cost of living at its current high and the daily struggle that pubs face to stay profitable!! Maybe a bit of staff re-training wouldn't go amiss and a reminder of who pays the wages!! read more

This place has been around as a drinking establishment since the 1400's. It's a great old pub - low beamed ceilings, fireplace, etc. Definitely atmospheric! We stopped for a few beers and some food. Beer was good (it's a Fullers pub so nothing amazing) and the food was solid pub grub. read more

If you're a tourist looking for the quintessential, traditional English pub meal, this is the center of the Get Your Grub On universe. Cozy under hand-hewn timbers dating from 1470 (Henry VI had just settled on the throne, and nobody in Europe yet knew North America existed) you're fed Falstaff-sized portions of house-made English classics. There are a couple of burgers (the chief difference between them appears to be the addition of bacon and onion rings to the larger), a homemade savory pie and tart of the day, a "mixed-grill" of traditional English meats, fish 'n' chips, some other consolation prizes for the luckless vegetarian or city slicker who can't go a day out of London without curry, and the (please insert chord from a choir of angels here) Roast of the Day. This was my first meal after a solid week in London, and it was like stumbling on the oasis in the desert's midst. I feel like my companion and I just barely made it over the ancient tavern's threshold, panting and flailing for any viands that didn't have cumin or hot chilies or za'atar or coriander or furikake or Thai red curry in them. London's great, OK? The options are staggering. But the fusion is out of control, my friends. I don't want harissa in my breakfast sandwiches or curry powder in a bowl of split pea soup. I want pizza to taste like pizza and French onion soup to stop frontin' like it's a bowl of daal (Kew Gardens cafe, I'm looking at you.) We ordered the Roast of the Day (cue angelic chord), which was turkey. I had the homemade meat pie of the day (minced beef and onion). Now, readers, I must tell you that shortly after we ordered, our friendly server left a piping-hot gravy boat on our table the size of a Smartcar, the only acceptable thought-response to which is "DIS GON B GUD." Not long after, our modern-day serving wench groaned to our table under the weight of our heaped platters of supper. The Roast of the Day (chord) was a massive serving of tender, thick-sliced roast turkey breast, several large fried potatoes, boiled and herbed potatoes, steamed carrots, broccoli, and cauliflower. Everything perfectly cooked and seasoned. The pie was a five-inch-wide, four-inch-high wedge of pastry stuffed with minced beef (the fat and gristle trimmed. I tell you, these Brits are not messing around) in a velvety, oniony sauce. A mountain of buttery mashed potatoes from scratch and steamed vegetables occupied the rest of the trencher's real estate. I warn you, readers, do not--DO. NOT.--attempt this meal on nights that you have tickets to an RSC play. You might no longer fit in your theatre seat. You might also fall asleep before intermission, your poor brain left jealous of all the oxygenated blood that's fled to your overloaded digestive system. You might snort abruptly awake during the final bow, which seems a tragic waste. But on nights you don't have tickets, and you don't mind your dinner conversation being reduced to some nominally-human grunts of gustatory pleasure, stop into The Old Thatch. read more

This place is perfect. It's everything you imagine you'll get when you go to a tavern in England. The place has been open since 1623, and it's holding up quite well. The interior is traditional tavern. Low light, lots of wood, animal heads on the wall and what looked like either small copies of Rembrandt paintings or paintings done in his style of the 1600s. The tavern is expensive, but you get what you pay for. And it's well worth it. Every meal looked traditional. I had Traditional Shepard's Pie, and it was excellent. The people sitting next to me had the Fish and Chips and Wiltshire Sausage dish, which is sausage with a side of mashed potatoes and cabbage. The Mashed potatoes seemed to be hand mashed, and not whirled to death. The meal portions are huge, so come hungry. They have London Pride, which I hear is not a surprise, and is brought to the table in half-pint sized glasses. They have their hard liquor on tap, ready to go for you. Oh, and even the celebrities come here to eat. Actress Kiera Knightly supposedly came here and was unnoticed except by at least one person, so a short article was written about her visit. This is a very intimate and traditional British pub, with amazing food, friendly staff and also a small outside area. We went for the rump steak and the Mexican three bean chilli. The steak was MASSIVE and had the thickest, fluffier chips I've ever seen. I'd definitely visit here again for a good pub lunch. read more

We'd an hour and something to kill before catching the train back to London. Liquid refreshment by way of a real ale was sought from a pub with character, preferably also with free wifi. A friend recommended the Old Thatch Tavern. My companion selected the Purity Ale. The Tavern folk said the ale would be good, and that the wifi signal would not. They were spot on with both recommendations, which didn't work out so well for me since I was the one who wanted the wifi. One item to note: this pub was a Football Free Zone during the World Cup. I'm not British but have spent a lot of time on the island ... and it's pubs. This is as traditional as I can imagine. Try it on a cooler, gray day - wonderful atmosphere. And a very good selection of beers. But I find very few English brews to be anywhere close to anything but very good. read more

I know that sometimes this happens but I'm particularly upset because they served many other people before us who had arrived after us. The Old Thatch Tavern is a charming pub in Stratford. I visited at the end of a visit to the town, and I'm glad I did - this place is perfect for a chilled out drink. The building is clearly of some age. From the outside it looks characterful and cosy, and once inside that is exactly what you get. There's a traditional lounge sort of area with a big open roaring fire (or it was when I went), a few tables and some sofas, with another area for dining beyond. Our first English meal and pub visit at this tavern! We were seated quickly and ordered our first pints per recommendation by the hostess. It was a treat sitting in a 15th Century tavern with its dark wooden beams, stucco walls and candle lit tables. On a trip to Stratford on a day off Oli M and I were in search of a quick pint before getting the train home, as we had missed ours by about 10 mins. They are every hour back to Birmingham so beware! The Old Thatch Tavern was on the way to the station so it meant we could pop in, rest our feet and then head off to the station at the appropriate time. The pub is set in a very cute period cottage and as we entered via the small door in the window was a Yelp sticker! So we knew this place had taste ;) Inside it is full of character and original features and has a small but functioning bar. The bar man was polite as we asked for a London Pride pint. We found nice place to sit by the window and enjoyed the pint in a cosy atmosphere. They had just begun the light the fire which was crackling away not long before we had to leave. Sad times. You can eat here, as the is a small restaurant area. I didn't get a chance to see a menu so cannot comment on this. Definitely recommend if you are after a swift half for the road. read more

This place had such a great atmosphere, outstanding service and delicious food. We walked in early and caught the bartender in the middle of his meal. He didn't even semi-groan; he stopped eating, seated us immediately, and made us feel welcome. The music from the 70s also made us feel welcome. Tried this on a whim last visit to Stratford and I have to say I'm disappointed. The pub itself is nice and cozy but looks like it could do with quite a bit of work to retain the glory of a 'proper tavern'. Beer was okay, could have been better, especially as Fullers produce some astounding ales that should be served properly. These were a bit lacklustre. LOVE THIS PLACE!!! I guess it is technically a Tavern, but I'm just going to go with Pub. It is cozy and I love the interior! It's about as traditional as an English pub gets, with old paintings, low chandeliers, and wood paneling! This was the last pub we stopped at before we left our 3 night stay here, but it was my personal favorite! They had wonderful ales on tap, that were quite different from the ones other pubs and taverns carried. I especially liked the Seafarer Ale that the bartender recommended! It is not the largest pub, but it definitely makes you feel like you are inside a pub from the 1600s (1623 to be exact)! There is a dining area that was quite full when we arrived, and there seemed to be a long wait for tables. Luckily for us, we were just here for a drink, but it seems smart to make a reservation. We were able to find a table in the bar area, and it just so happened to be Quiz Night (Tuesday)!!! I love pub quizzes, and this one was especially fun! It was quite long with 5 categories, and the first topic was 'British Politicians' which basically means as Americans, we were completely screwed. As most of the people in the bar at the moment happened to be British, and older adults, they had a significant advantage over us. Almost everyone participated and it was really fun! We had more luck on the other topics. One of the questions asked which year the titanic sank, and as I JUST started watching Downton Abbey, I happened to know the answer :D The atmosphere is really quite and calm, and everyone was really friendly and seemed to be really enjoying the game!
