To the native Wildcats of Strudders this is an absolute must-see! My mother is a Struthers native and insisted we make a stop here as I was home (Youngstown) for a couple days over the weekend. The Elmton was packed to the gill at 7:30 on a Friday night. This place is tight quarters all around with basically no waiting area. The hostess informed us that it would take 20-25 minutes to get seated, but it only took ten. I was thankful for this as I felt like I was standing right next to a booth of people enjoying their dinner --- because I was! Once seated, there was a nice view to several TV's and I was able to watch the beloved Bearcats off the Orange in the Big East Tourney (hells yes)! I tried both the pizza and the Cavatelli as I was informed that pasta, pizza, and chicken were the to-do's at the Elmton. Cavatellis were exactly what I'd expect from the Youngstown area: pasta and sauce deliciousness. The pizza was much better than most anything in Cincinnati, but I thought the sauce could have been sweeter. Drinks were dirt cheap as is everything in the Yo. They can enjoy the cardboard lackluster taste of their chains or, worse yet, their carb-free cauliflower crust monstrosities. I can't believe that I never visited this place before (semi-paraphrasing Rick L's review). I lived in the Mahoning Valley for 25 years and moved away 20 years ago but this year was the first time I ever visited The Elmton. I went here upon recommendation from family members and for their well-known pizza, which I had. And it was just about the best I ever had, anywhere. It seriously rivaled another Valley favorite, Wedgewood Pizza. Yes they always put green peppers in it but I love green peppers anyway. They seem to have a real good menu overall but it may take a while for me to get around to other items, their pizza is just too darn good. read more

Surprisingly pretty busy most times, I say that, because the food isn't very good. For whatever reason, they put giant chunks of bitter, I mean REALLY bitter Green Peppers in their pizza sauce and there's no getting any without it. After finding out I disliked their pizza the hard way, I went back another time and ordered a sandwich....wow...god awful, like gas station food sort of awful. Their saving grace and the only reason why they get 2 stars instead of 1 is that their Broasted Chicken is actually pretty decent. The guy who owns the place is super mean to his employees and talks down to them, which made me feel terrible for them. They changed the pizza!! This has always been a favorite, but the last two visits (3-4 months apart) were very disappointing. We arrived at 6:00 on a Monday, not crowded, but waited 25 minutes to get menus. When she took drink orders, I put in for a pizza because it has always taken longer, next we placed our food order. They brought our pizza - still no other food! When I said we are done eating and still no food, she said she would check. Came back and said a couple more minutes!! I love Elmton pizza!!! We decided to get delivery!. Sorry but they sucked!!! It was over an hour and my boyfriend checked on the app and it said the food was delivered 20 minutes ago! No one text us and it has been raining all day. They left it on the front porch not covered so I put my pizza in the oven but my boyfriends chicken was supposed to be barbecued and it was NOT!!! This is the first time for me and my family at the Elmton. We were blown away with how good our pepperoni pizza, white pizza, and boasted chicken were. I ordered the two piece broadcasted chicken and I received two nice size pieces of chicken. It was lightly breaded and very moist and juicy inside. The Elmton is a great place to eat. With all the chain restaurants nearby, you need to ignore them and head here. I had some doubts but found the place pretty full on a weeknight, always a good sign. The menu is pretty exhaustive, and I can speak only to the broasted chicken. If you like this kind of fried chicken, the Elmton is the place to go. Granted, the Amish restaurants in Sugar Creek and other communities is outstanding, but the chicken at the Elmton is also very good. Crisp skin and juicy chicken with a lot of flavor - you will like it. The meal comes with a choice of potatoes. The best option is the broasted potatoes, which are large hunks of potato similar to fries but much larger and more robust. Your meal comes with thick sliced bread, which is nothing great, It also includes some excellent, tangy cole slaw. It might be the second best cole slaw I have had (first place belongs to the cole slaw I had on Catalina Island in California.) The cup is not large but is quite good and a great way to start the meal. Price is the last part of the meal, but I should mention that the three-piece broasted chicken dinner is $9.00, the same price as the two-piece white meat meal. I lucked out and ended up here on the night that the broasted chicken dinner was $7.85, making a good deal an even better one. A lot of people were having the chicken, but the spaghetti and meatballs meals and the pizzas also looked quite good. Some logistical details: There is a parking lot, but it is small and tends to fill up. Fortunately there is street parking nearby. The restaurant has a bar and some tables in the front, some booths in the middle, and more tables in the back. There is a front door entrance from the street that takes you into the bar. A middle entrance from the parking lot leads into the area between the bar and the booths, which is near the hostess station in the middle. The back entrance from the parking lot leads to the area between the booths and the rear tables. No matter where you enter, you may wonder if it is the right place. Do not worry - the hostess will spot you and find a place for you to sit. If I lived here, I imagine that I would be a regular guest. read more

I have been going to the Elmton for years. Last night I had one of the worst experiences of my life. I ordered a pizza and wings to be picked up I knew it was gonna be a busy night so I ordered it 5 hours before i was going to pick it up. The order was to be picked up at 5:15. I got there two minutes late. I paid for my food and then was made to wait over a half a hour for pre-ordered food. The wings were suppose to be sauce on the side and they were drenched in sauce and were both slimy and fatty. The pizza was mess as well. The dough was almost raw due to the thickness and the pizza which should have been cheesy was hard to chew due to the cheese being so burnt. I spent almost $50 for an inedible mess. I called to speak to a manager or owner and was blown off.So they lost a loyal customer. read more

We live in Canfield, this restaurant is in Struthers, it's a drive but for good food why not we thought. Well, we thought wrong. The pizza was so salty, and I like salt, but this was inedible. It had to be thrown out. The chicken was okay but nothing special. I honestly cannot imagine why this place is so busy or why people think the food is so good. My chicken was raw, blood on the plate , the owner or manager acted like a real jerk , he was not nice at blamed the waitress instead of the one who cooked it, no remorse no offering of nothing . After reading the reviews, I was looking forward to trying the pizza. Ordered a 12 inch pepperoni pizza, but when it came out, it had pepperoni and green peppers on it. I told the waitress that I didn't order green peppers and she said "All of our pizzas have peppers. There's no option for getting it without them." The owner came over to see what the problem was, and I told her that I just wanted a pepperoni pizza. I pointed out that the menu made no mention of all pizzas having peppers on them. I then suggested that they revise the menu. She replied "No, we will not revise our menus. We've been doing our pizzas that way since 1969 and no one has ever complained about the peppers." Really? In 45 years, I'm the first person to order a pizza and be surprised to get one with peppers on it. They took the pizza back, and I got a sandwhich instead. But the whole experience left a bad taste in my mouth (pun intended) and I have no desire to go back to this restaurant again. So be advised, if you want to get a pizza, then I hope you like green peppers. read more

Lived in this town most of my life and I have to say that this restaurant is by far one of my least favorite places to eat. Their pizza has a sour after taste, pasta sauce is very basic and plain, and it's always full of a bunch of locals drinking to much. My sister and brother in law decided to take me here instead of the Indian restaurant we had planned on. After googling it, I decided to change out of my dress and into jeans and a t-shirt, which was a good idea because this is definitely the sort of place where you stick out like a sore thumb in anything else. Atmosphere-wise, it was half dive bar, half family restaurant straight out of 1985. Very crowded on a Wednesday evening, I can't imagine what it looks like on a Friday night. We had to wait for a table which took about 10 minutes, and we were looming over the people who had the misfortune of being seated next to the door. Our waitress was nice, though the service was slow. Probably not her fault with the place being packed. We split a cheese pizza and a plate of fries, and I ordered the broasted chicken with a salad. The bread that came with it wasn't quite stale, but by no means fresh. The pizza was loaded with cheese, as was the salad. For what it's worth, the waitress warned us about those infamous green peppers, though they were fine by me. The broasted chicken was genuinely good, very juicy, and most of what we got was on special, so it was all pretty cheap. I felt like I ate a bowling ball after dinner was done though, and ultimately wished we had gotten Indian. One thing I really didn't like was the fact that the women's bathroom is right next to people's booths on the wall in the middle of restaurant. I can't imagine a worse place for it, you open the door right into traffic and the unfortunate occupants of the nearest three booths look up at you automatically, since you practically opened the door in their faces. While this restaurant may offer some local nostalgia for the locals it's nothing to write home about. The worst part about this place is the service. Only go here if you have 2 hours to eat lunch as the only table in the place or 4 hours to eat dinner. The second worst is the small parking lot for the restaurant's size. Overall the food is just barely a step above bar food. After some comments had been made I felt the need to update my review. While this place may be "iconic" and as I said bring back nostalgia for the locals reliving their high school days as a restaurant the place just isn't good. Even a person who recently disagreed with my review admitted this isn't a 5 star restaurant it's a "neighborhood icon from 1945". Guess what, it looks like it's been around since 1945. This place is amazing. Their pizza is an acquired taste, but is always cooked to perfection with the right amount of sauce and cheese.
